Dawn Newton wasn't the first in on the Internet boom of the late 1990s but she arrived at just the right time. One of the first employees of NetZero, Newton rode the web1.0 wave as well as anyone. When she got burned out on the tech front, she decided to go to culinary school in Paris and served under several Michelin starred chefs. Not bad for someone who didn't know how to cook a hot dog in college. Newton is now the co-founder and chief operating officer of Netki, which is developing digital identity solutions for use with blockchains. One of their bigger projects has been helping right the Chivo wallet in El Salvador after it's rocky start. We also talk about digital identity and cooking shows. My guest today is my friend Jeff Garzik. Jeff has long been at the center of developing and commercializing open source software related to Bitcoin and blockchain technology. Before co-founding Bloq to develop blockchain solutions for a multi-chain world, he spent five years as a Bitcoin core developer and ten years at Red Hat. His work with the Linux kernel is now found in every Android phone and data center running Linux today. Jeff serves on the advisory boards of BitPay, BitFury, Netki and WayPaver Labs. Jeff is currently the Chief Designer & the Co-founder of Vesper Finance. Vesper works as a "metalayer" for DeFi, routing deposits to highest yield opportunities within risk tolerance for the particular pool. Products are non-custodial and auto-compounding. Under-the-hood, Vesper enables a truly set-and-forget experience at scale through a unique approach that enables yield aggregating "strategies" to be upgraded, replaced, connected, and concurrent – all with no added burden on the end user. Jeff is also the CEO of Bloq, an enterprise blockchain solutions company he co-founded with industry investor Matt Roszak in 2015. The company's solutions include end-to-end blockchain infrastructure service BloqEnterprise and tokenization venture studio BloqLabs. In our discussion, we cover Bitcoin's role within the broader crypto ecosystem, where innovation is headed in the space, regulation, and much more. Jeff discusses Bitcoin vs Ethereum debate, the sound money meme war over, and why Bitcoin's halving cycle is ingenious. We go on to discuss why cross-chain is the future, has innovation left Bitcoin, and the Path to Decentralization. Jeff goes on to analogize cryptocurrencies to social networks and discusses the importance of building tools that empower people. Jeff gives an excellent suggestion to regulators for dealing with the innovation within crypto. We finish our conversation discussing how Vesper empowers users and makes DeFi approachable and safe. Please enjoy my conversation with Jeff Garzik. -- ParaSwap: If you want to make a swap at the best price across the DeFi market, check out https://untoldstories.link/paraswap. Netki was launched by Justin and Dawn Newton, and allows users to create bitcoin wallets with “normal” names and e-mail addresses, just like DNS allows IP addresses to be written as plain english website names (ex: bitcoin.com).Netki supports 3 cryptocurrencies and is planning to expand to more in the near future. A key feature of Netki's bitcoin wallets is their name, which do not look like a traditional combination of digits and letters. Talking about the Wallet Name Service, they attempted to produce a domestic wallet address, and companies that have joined Netki's wallet naming service are Purse, BitSo, Bitt and BlockCypher. Netki wallets have names like “wallet.koritzky.bit”. Thus, the service is not a wallet provider as such, but rather another ‘superstructure' constructed on top of a current bitcoin wallet. Netki also is becoming an online hub for vetting and verification of your digital identity. Share, Subscribe and Listen to the Podcast. If not for DNS (domain name systems), very few people would be able to visit this website. They'd have to know that our server's IP address is something like 192.94.5.58. Needless to say, readership/listenership of The Bitcoin Podcast would probably never reach “mass adoption.” Netki is a company that's betting that domain names will do for Bitcoin what they did for the Internet. But instead of visiting websites, you'd be visiting someone's wallet. CEO of Netki, Justin Newton, joins us in the studio this week to discuss both usability and user security.

The Internet's designers quickly realized that no one's very good at remembering IP address numbers. Unless you type the same number over and over again (and I did when I ran an ISP) a human readable version is a lot easier. That's what the domain name system or DNS is all about, connecting human readable names to specific IP addresses.  You can imagine then that Bitcoin, with its long alphanumeric addresses, suffers from similar challenges. That insight is what this podcast is about and the reason Justin Newton and Dawn Newton formed Netki. Try it out by sending bitcoin to me at wallet.geopeabody.bit (kidding) or, better, take a listen as the Netki leaders discuss their directory service for virtual currency wallet addresses.
