The Canadian Supreme Court has given its approval for the merger of Hut 8 Mining Corp. and US Bitcoin mining company, Bitfury. This decision signifies a significant development in the cryptocurrency industry, as it allows Hut 8 to acquire Bitfury and expand its Bitcoin mining operations. The merger is expected to bolster Hut 8's position as a prominent player in the Bitcoin mining sector and enhance its mining capabilities. This news reflects the growing importance of the cryptocurrency market in Canada and the broader global crypto landscape, showcasing the increasing legitimacy and acceptance of digital currencies in the financial world. Stacks token price surged over 12% in the last 7 days, in response to Bitcoin's rise above $27,000. Stacks, an Ethereum-compatible blockchain, saw a notable increase in value, leading investors to consider it a potential buy. This price surge could be attributed to the growing interest in blockchain projects aiming to enable smart contracts on Bitcoin. Stacks offers this functionality and has gained attention as a viable solution. New York regulators claim these rules aim to enhance consumer protection and market integrity by working to prevent market manipulation and fraudulent activities while promoting transparency and accountability within the crypto industry. Kazakhstan has established a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) development agency, marking a significant move into the world of digital currencies. This agency will oversee the creation and implementation of a national CBDC. Kazakhstan aims to harness the benefits of CBDCs, including improved payment efficiency, financial inclusion, and reduced transaction costs. The move is part of the country's broader efforts to modernize its financial infrastructure and promote digital innovation in the financial sector. This is a fast follow to Hong Kong and Israel, who a couple of weeks ago announced their planned collaboration and knowledge sharing initiatives around building their own CBDCs. Jeff Garzik is the co-founder of Bloq, a blockchain enterprise software company. Garzik, a bitcoin core developer, and fellow co-founder Matthew Rosen, a blockchain investor, launched Bloq in October 2015. In October 2017, the company announced the world's first cross-blockchain cryptocurrency, Metronome. Garzik graduated Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996 with a degree in computer science and began his career as a web developer at CNN. He later worked for more than ten years as Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat where he was involved in one of the best-known open source projects, the Linux kernel. In 2011, he became the CEO of exMULTI, working with bitcoin, and subsequently spent two years as a bitcoin core developer at BitPay. In 2012, Garzik founded Dunvegan Space Systems, with the goal of sending the bitcoin into space. He also founded web3 entertainment company NextCypher Productions. He is the director of the Blockchain Alliance, a public-private forum established by a broad coalition of companies and organizations to help combat criminal activity involving digital currencies and blockchain technology. Before joining Steptoe, Alan served as a career official in senior policy positions at The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for almost a decade, during both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Secretary for Strategy, Planning, Analysis & Risk and second-in-charge overall of the DHS Office of Policy during the second term of the Obama Administration. Among a variety of responsibilities, Alan oversaw emergency preparedness and response policy for the DHS Office of Policy, and participated in and helped run a variety of scenario planning and tabletop exercise activities at DHS. Alan also established the cyber policy office within the DHS Office of Policy, represented DHS on the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS) and related national security review processes for foreign investments, and architected and helped implement DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson's Unity of Effort Initiative, a major corporate-level DHS management reform effort. Prior to joining DHS, he worked with FEMA's National Urban Search & Rescue Response System for 11 years and served as chair of the System Advisory Committee's Legal Issues Working Group. He is the author of "Domestic Preparedness: Law, Policy, and National Security," a legal casebook on emergency management law and policy, as well as book chapters concerning federal preparedness grant funding. Alan also is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center where he has taught Domestic Preparedness Law and Policy and National Security Crisis Law, and a non-resident fellow at Georgetown Law's Center on National Security and the Law.

At its re:Invent conference, Amazon Web Services announced two new initiatives to make machine learning more accessible to anyone interested in learning and experimenting with the technology. The first is a $10 million scholarship programme to make AI and ML education accessible to poor students around the world. It will benefit 2000 students every year. Top 500 students, after a first Udacity nano degree, will get a shot at a second one and mentorship from experts at Amazon and Intel. The second initiative is about increasing access to machine learning through Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab, which gives everyone access to a no-cost version of Amazon SageMaker—an AWS service that helps customers build, train, and deploy machine learning models. “The two initiatives we are announcing today are designed to open up educational opportunities in machine learning to make it more widely accessible to anyone interested in the technology,” said Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Amazon Machine Learning at AWS. US lawmakers have called executives of eight major cryptocurrency firms to testify before a congressional committee on December 8, BBC reports, as the government scrutinises the sector further. Coinbase's Alesia Haas, Circle's Jeremy Allaire and Bitfury's Brian Brooks are among the executives asked to testify, according to BBC. This will be the first time companies representing the controversial sector have been questioned in this way. Square, a fintech company co-founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is changing its name to Block, the company said Wednesday. Dorsey quit Twitter earlier this week, where he was part-time CEO, while also being CEO of Square. “The change to Block acknowledges the company's growth,” the company said in a press release. “Since its start in 2009, the company has added Cash App, TIDAL, and TBD54566975 as businesses, and the name change creates room for further growth. Block is an overarching ecosystem of many businesses united by their purpose of economic empowerment, and serves many people—individuals, artists, fans, developers, and sellers.” Microsoft has released a cheaper, standalone version of its Teams collaboration software, Teams Essentials, aimed at smaller businesses. “We know how difficult the past 20 months have been for small businesses. They've had to demonstrate extreme flexibility to adapt, often with limited access to tools and technology,” Jared Spataro, corporate vice president for Microsoft 365, said in a blogpost. “Teams Essentials is built specifically to meet the unique needs of small businesses, enabling them to thrive in this new era of work. ”Teams Essentials includes group meetings for up to 30 hours, meetings with up to 300 people, and 10GB of cloud storage per user. A subscription will cost $4 in the US, and Rs. 100 in India, per person per month. CRED, a fintech company founded by entrepreneur Kunal Shah, is buying Happay, which provides corporate expense management in India. The acquisition is expected to be a cash and stock deal potentially valuing Happay at approximately $180 million, the company said in a press release. While Happay will operate as a separate entity, the team will work closely with CRED to tap its ecosystem, build distribution, add products and expand the business. Happay's 230-member team will get all the benefits extended to CRED team members, including its ESOP programme, the company said in the release.

My guest today is my friend Jeff Garzik. Jeff has long been at the center of developing and commercializing open source software related to Bitcoin and blockchain technology. Before co-founding Bloq to develop blockchain solutions for a multi-chain world, he spent five years as a Bitcoin core developer and ten years at Red Hat. His work with the Linux kernel is now found in every Android phone and data center running Linux today. Jeff serves on the advisory boards of BitPay, BitFury, Netki and WayPaver Labs. Jeff is currently the Chief Designer & the Co-founder of Vesper Finance. Bob Burnett is a technologist and entrepreneur with over 35 years of experience in technology related companies. He has been active in the global blockchain ecosystem for more than five years, working across 20 countries, engaging with organisations from core crypto currency companies to governments and financial institutions, through to large corporates and industry associations. As executive director of INATBA, Marc is committed to positioning INATBA as the only international organization truly equipped to convene public and private industry partners with the credible support of powerful allies like the European Commission and key advisory bodies What is blockchain? For Marc, blockchain is a type of distributed ledger technology (DLT) where transactions are recorded with an immutable cryptographic signature called a hash. These are added into a chain of blocks, with each block, validating the prior block and creating an immutable audit trail that in turn creates trust. Distributed ledger technology is a decentralised database managed by multiple participants across multiple nodes. The reason why blockchain and distributed ledger technology is important is because it finally helps us solve the issue of trust by applying technologies such as cryptography and governance models such as consensus mechanisms. What is INATBA? To answer the question of what is INATBA, Marc took us on his journey that ultimately took him to INATBA. In the 2014, Marc was introduced to the world of blockchain and bitcoin when he met Valery Vavlivo, CEO and co-founder of Bitfury, who made him Global Ambassador & Markets Development at Bitfury. Whilst at Bitfury, Marc learned that trying to get large blockchain applications to scale, such as the Land Registry one for the Republic of Georgia or the one the Ukraine’s Government plans to auction seized assets on a blockchain, would come up against a number of friction points. These frictions points weren’t only technology ones but also one of policy and of interoperability both between nations and between technology stacks. All these applications were interesting for those governments and created a great deal of interest with other governments around the world who wanted to leverage those applications and others. But the friction points were preventing the adoption of blockchain based technologies at a massive scale. Some of these issues are rooted around the lack of standards and interoperability between technology stacks which would cause governments and large potential customers of this technology to recoil a little from making early decisions for the fear of either putting themselves into a vendor locking position, or a situation where they've made the wrong strategic technological decision. INATBA exists to address some of those friction points. They bring a number of parties together from governments and supranational bodies in the public sector to startups, SMEs and enterprises in the private sector, to try and achieve commonality across standards, good governance and interoperability. By reducing those friction points they hope for blockchain to be massively adopted. Interoperability Establishing standards and interoperability from a technology perspective is absolutely needed and very critical for the industry to be able to develop further. But equally important is the focus on governance structures and legal structures. INATBA established the Standardisation Committee, to work across all working groups with the aim to convene discussions with parties from different standard setting bodies, policy makers and all the elements of public sector and the private sector to reach an agreement on standards and levels of interoperability across technology, across legal structures, and across country boundaries. Bill Tai is a very successful entrepreneur and investor. Not only is he successful according to external validators of success, but he is also humble and shares his knowledge and brilliance without expectation of reciprocation.
