Runway's co-founder Cristóbal Valenzuela on the need for new creative interfaces to control complex algorithms that focus on results (not technology), the freedom of being a startup, and how machine intelligence is changing how we think, design, and make art. Cristóbal Valenzuela is a technologist, artist and software developer interested in the intersection between artificial intelligence and creative tools. He is Runway's co-founder. Previously, he co-founded Latent Studio, a creative studio specializing in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He also contributes to OSS and helps maintain ml5.js. His work has been sponsored by Google and the Processing Foundation and his projects has been exhibited in Latin America and the US, including NeurIPS, Santiago Museum of Contemporary Art, ARS Electronica, GAM, ACADIA, Fundación Telefonica, Lollapalooza, NYC Media Lab, New Latin Wave, DOCLAB, Inter-American Development Bank, Stanford University and New York University. Connect with Cristóbal on his website, Twitter (@c_valenzuelab), or GitHub (@cvalenzuela). Favorite quotes "You don't care about the mathematical function that goes behind blurring [an image in Photoshop]. You just want the output of it—the creative output of moving a slider and having an effect applied to your video, your pixels, or content." "When you think about using algorithms to help you and assist you in the editing process, you need [to find] a metaphor or tool that would allow you to collaborate with those algorithms." "We need those new interfaces, metaphors, and systems. And that's all we're building, basically, those next-generation systems to help people create video and content." "When you take that picture, no one is saying, 'Oh, the AI is biased' or 'The AI worked or didn't work' or 'It showed me new creative possibilities.' It just works." "[Artificial intelligence] is a tool as any other tool. And so, in general, I think all the art tools that we're making will eventually reach that point where you're not too concerned about the systems you're using. You are just using it as a tool. And if it provides you with good results to explore the creative direction, you're going to use it again." Host Camila Montañez and New Latin Wave founder, Sokio, dig into the super cool things that make up Latinx cultural multiverse. In this episode New Latin Wave contributor Melissa Saenz-Gordon interviewed Art Historians Andrea Giunta (based in Buenos Aires) and Cecilia Fajardo-Hill (based in Los Angeles) who curated the groundbreaking exhibition, Radical Women: Latin American Art 1960-1985 and Carmen Hermo, Associate Curator at the Elizabeth E. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Why is an exhibition about radical Latina/Latinx women necessary? What makes the female body political? Was it easy to find a venue? Why were women drawn to new media? These questions are all answered by curators Andrea Giunta, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill and Carmen Hermo. Featuring over 123 artists from 15 countries, Radical Women: Latin American Art 1960-1985 was first shown at the Hammer Museum at UCLA as a part of the Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative by the Getty Foundation, then the Brooklyn Museum, and finally at the Pinacoteca in São Paolo. New York City-based performance artist Stefa* is our musical guest. The New Latin Wave Podcast is a production of New Latin Wave. podcast@newlatinwave.com www.newlatinwave.com

Live from New York, it’s Songmess! Yes, you read that right. This incredibly special episode was recorded live at New Latin Wave with a packed audience and our incredible guests, Boston-based Chilean band Breaking Forms!!! The duo is comprised of Juan Necochea and Nicole L'Huillier, brilliant musicians from Chile's lauded indie scene. With Juan originally a part of Picnic Kibun and Nicole from Condor Jet, both musicians came together for Breaking Forms to push the boundaries of their music, studies and love. The band has released two EPs thus far, developing a sound that is dreamy and fast, whimsical yet heart-pounding. We want to give huge thanks to Sokio, Amanda and New Latin Wave for inviting and hosting us so kindly, and we're sending lots of love to all the friends who were in the audience supporting. This episode is great. This band is great. Y'all are great! Breaking Forms Set List: - "God (out)" - "Carnival" - "Ask Me Now" - "Faking to Dance" - "Occupy" Please share, subscribe and find us on iTunes, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or contact us at songmessmusic@gmail.com.
This Chilean composer and musician Sokio (Mauricio Díaz) is behind the 2nd annual New Latin Wave festival in New York City, where he aims to bring together Latinx music, journalism, gastronomy and art.
On this very special episode of Songmess we are delighted to bring you our interview with seminal Puerto Rican indie band Balún! Today's show was recorded somewhere in Brooklyn at the Haus of Balún, where we got Angélica, José and Nora - three of the four dreambow darlings - to share some chismesitos indies with us. Buckle up because our conversations range from the lauded Boricua indie music scene, to the band's adventures through Bogotá for Hermoso Ruido, and the island's current path to recovery in the wake of devastating back-to-back hurricanes. Our playlist today is also a bit different since Angélica brought a series of pieces by modern Latinx composers. So even though you will hear a few non-classical tracks mixed in, we encourage you to wear your finest attire as you listen to this incredible night at the Latin indie symphony. (Special production credit to cutie haus puppy Midi.) In the same vein, both Angélica Negrón and Songmess will be performing live during New Latin Wave at Brooklyn Bazaar in Greenpoint this coming October 22nd. New Latin Wave is a multi disciplinary symposium that spotlights discussions and performances on music, visual arts, journalism, cuisine and independent publishing by Latinx creatives. Angélica will headline the music program with a 3pm performance of her solo work in the Brooklyn Bazaar Concert Hall, while we, Songmess, will record a live episode with guest band Breaking Forms in the Disco Room at 5:30 pm. All links will be included below and we urge you to joins us IRL to keep this network of Latinx creativity growing!
