Questioning Trickle Down Identity Politics (Summer Special)

On this Summer Special Nick from Freedom of Species and Lottie discuss what journalist Naomi Klein refers to as trickle down identity politics. This form of identity politics, typified by people such as Hillary Clinton, prioritises achieving a more diverse range of people in positions of power, with the argument that if more people from marginalised groups get into positions of power, these benefits will eventually “trickle down” to that group as a whole.   We do this drawing on the following article that Nick has written: https://progressivepostings.wordpress.com/2021/02/26/idpols3/  This show is a 3CR Summer Special – see here for other Specials: https://www.3cr.org.au/summerspecials2022-2023  Music: Why Are You Like This? If you choose to listen, please pay attention to your body. If you need to pause or stop listening to this episode, please honour that. Thank you. At four months old, Emma G already had brain surgery. In her childhood, she saw alcoholism affect her family. In her teens, she was sexually assaulted, homeless, addicted to alcohol and drugs. Then, at 19, she had one session with a psychologist that changed her life. For the first time, she knew she was on this Earth for a reason! An award-winning musician, author, and youth empowerment coach, Emma G has had a lifelong battle with a rare neurological condition called hydrocephalus, and has used music to recover from multiple traumas, including ten brain surgeries. She is on a mission to save the world one song at a time, not just through her own music, but also by coaching teenagers to channel their voices and struggles through the powerful tool of songwriting. Well howdy there. This is a segment from the podcast discussing the issue of light skin vs. dark skin. I watched a documentary called, "Not Black Enough". Starring some known actors, socialites, musicians, and normal people recounting their experience with colorism. I also reveal some of my own contributions to the colorist agenda being spewed to our community, where I discuss my colorist past. This is a very sensitive subject in the black community that should continue being talked about; regardless of whos feelings get hurt! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
