Some of us don't stumble across ready-made communities. Some of us have to build them - and today's guest knows a thing or two about that.Today I am joined by the one and only Alexis Lee – Founder of Style Me Sunday, author of 'Feeling Myself', community leader (Black Enough, Healing Myself), psychotherapist in training and apparently, the only person who could get me talking about sex without wanting to crawl under the table. We dive into it all — the stuff nobody taught us growing up. From convent school guilt, to figuring out what love really means later in life, to how shutting down the sex chat only fuels more shame. We also get into how ADHD messes with body image, self-esteem, intimacy... and basically, how it all ties back to connection and community. From setting up a spontaneous fishing community (yep, you read that right) to navigating the chaos of daily life, Alexis shares her honest take on what it actually means to live authentically.

Bree, Chris and Chris D. are joined by John from DTLR to recap the show and rate it amongst the best SB shows of all-time. Gelo Ball is set to perform at All-Star weekend in the Bay, but his dispute with BM Miss Nikki Baby is getting more attention due to his new gf having a bunch to say while the two were out in New Orleans on bad behavior. Also, Jacquees and Dej Loaf are set to go on tour together, which came as a surprise to Jacquees's partner - Deiondra Sanders. The crew shifts gears to recap the Jordan Brand event held in Chicago and show concern for people getting back to fighting over Mikes. 50 Cent is going next level petty after the news about Irv Gotti and Big Meech surfaces. Send us a textA chance to revisit one of my favourite books and favourite ever conversations this week. Zakiya Dalila Harris's The Other Black Girl came out in early 2021, and for once I was ahead of the curve! Right from the start, I adored this novel of workplace micro-aggression and satirical horror in the publishing industry – and I'm glad to see the world has since agreed. It's a high-concept thriller that blends the paranoia of Rosemary's Baby with the bite of Get Out – and for once it's a story that deserves those comparisons. Zakiya talks about her own background in publishing and how it informed this nightmare. We talk about discussing racism in fiction, and (in a slightly meta way) we discuss how interviews LIKE THIS ONE may actually perpetuate a degree of othering. In short, I tie myself in white millennial knots, but Zakiya is wonderfully generous. God I love this book. Some may say it's not horror. I'd disagree so much that I stuck it on my list of best horror novels ever. Let's see what you think. Enjoy! Other books mentioned: All Her Little Secrets (2021), by Wanda M. Patrick Mahomes is no longer black enough, and a black, “anti-racist” professor loses his “blackness” card because Marxism always eats its tail. . . and, speaking of Marxism: what if owning the office of state auditor is a backdoor way to save the Republic? It might well be that!. Great news: the Marxist snake is eating its tail. Before the Superbowl, the Mockingbirds obsessively touted and promoted the skin pigmentation of Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. After the game, when Mahomes made it his priority to thank God--“without Him nothing is possible”--Mahomes lost his “blackness” as the Mockingbirds tried to suppress the man's actual and expressed identity. The snake of Marxism is consuming its tail, in this case “othering” a man who, by the accounts of the Left, should be in their ranks. A more vital example is Professor Vincent Lloyd who has spent his academic career studying race, lecturing on it and working in “anti-racism.” He's a black man of the Left, though a pretty thoughtful version of the Left, given his lectures, which are filled with history though wrapped in conclusions with which I disagree. Professor Lloyd found himself removed from a lecturing job at Telluride by students--actually, by exactly one student--because he harmed them. Among the many ways he harmed them: his “body language.” Again, Marxism is eating its tail . . . or, in this case, the tail of Marxism, the younger, angrier, they might say “blacker” round of Marxists are eating the head. This is bound to be so because Marxism is rooted in the literal hatred of God. What does God say? God is not a respecter of human-made categories of people created by the likes of Karl Marx and pushed by The Party. Galatians 3:2828 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.Karl Marx openly defied God and committed his career to trying to become equal to The Lord. He failed. No one is like God: 13 Bible versesEpisode 643: How good State auditors can help save the Republic … Yes, auditors! Josh Gallon, State Auditor of North Dakota on his battle with the legislatureGeorge Soros is filled with evil and cunning. He used his cunning to do more evil by purchasing State's attorneys general and district attorneys in major cities. The results speak for themselves: record high murders, ambush murders of cops, rapes, overdoses and property crimes. Tony Fauci is filled with evil; under his threats, the profession of public health has been destroyed, so much so that Big Pharma's friends, the NY Times are actually suing to get texts between Pfizer and government bosses (wait until you hear why the government says they cannot turn over the texts). We can learn from that man so steeped in evil to, instead, do good. Christian conservatives should flood the zone of state auditors. Josh Gallon, of North Dakota, is in that position. From his office, he can monitor all spending and even processes of the state in the implementation of policy. In fact, North Dakota has a wonderful law that empowers citizens to demand audits. Already, gallion has found taxing districts with $180 million surpluses, illegal for them to have, even as they continue to increase taxes! That may be why the State Legislature wants to limit his power, though they claim that is because he costs counties, cities and districts money they don't have for these audits. Josh is also looking into how the Covid clot-shots were distributed-shocker: it was chaos. He and I got into it a little bit over how awful these shots are for people and I urged him to look into that. What does God say? How Godly Leaders Handle Prosperity and PromotionThe LinksWhy Karl Marx Hated God, and Marxists Hate Christians; Part one of an interview with scholar Paul Kengor.A Black Professor Trapped in Anti-Racist Hell; Vincent Lloyd“I want to thank God for giving me this platform and putting so many amazing people around me … without Him none of this would even be possible.”Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wins another MVP and points to the Lord.BREAKING: West Virginia legislators have introduced a bill to abolish DEI bureaucracies, ban coercive "diversity statements," prohibit mandatory racial reeducation, and end identity-based discrimination in the state's public universities. Do you often wonder if you are brown enough? Black Enough? Mexican enough? I struggle with being enough for everyone in my life as I fulfill all the roles I was born into or the roles I grew into. I always seem to fall short when I allow people's ideas of what is enough to cloud my judgment, so I am here to 1. Validate that I am Mexican, brown, and woman enough to talk about the things I talk about each day. 2. Larry is joined by writer and filmmaker Elvis Mitchell to discuss his new documentary on Netflix, 'Is That Black Enough For You?!?', which focuses on the unsung heroes of African-American cinema during the 1960s and '70s. They begin their conversation by talking about the genesis of the project and some of the legendary actors who serve as inspiration for the film's focus, particularly Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. Next, they examine how the psychological dynamics and representation presented in films like 'Cotton Comes To Harlem', 'Night of the Living Dead', and 'Uptight' were flashpoints for the blaxploitation era and the mainstream popularity of movies like 'Superfly' and 'Shaft' (22:39). Next, they talk about the stigma of the Black cowboy in American culture and the power within films that can shape social narratives (). After the break, they dive into Pam Grier's potency as a screen icon and share anecdotes about growing up watching their favorite favorite films from the era. They end the pod by examining the importance and intersection of music in Black films from the 1970s, notably Curtis Mayfield's contributions to 'Superfly', and how the bevy of amazing footage was obtained for the project (53:17). Elvis Mitchell, longtime host of KCRW's “The Treatment”, and producer of “The Black List”, joins Mike to discuss his new documentary “Is that Black Enough for You?” The film recounts an explosion of Black Film which occurred mainly in the period of 1968-1978, placing it within the context of both the prior failure of Hollywood to provide real representation of Black characters, as well as a strand of chiefly independent African American-produced film that Elvis traces back to as early as the 1910s and 1920s. Elvis tells Mike how the movies affected his grandmother's (literal) dreams, as well as how they drove the (figurative) dreams and fantasy life of his stellar cast. Elvis explains to Mike his nuanced view of the legacies of such luminaries as Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, and Orson Welles. What role did Mohammed Ali play for Black filmmakers? And how did Diane Sands embody the promise of this era? Mike and Elvis also discuss his process–narration first, clips second–and why he passed on the declamatory “They call me Mr. Tibbs” moments in favor of clips which demonstrate the interiority and development of characters. And, of course, Elvis and Mike had to talk about the music: Isaac Hayes; Earth, Wind & Fire; Curtis Mayfield… and Alessandro Alessandroni!? “Is the Black Enough for You” streams on Netflix starting Friday, November 11th. Ep. 145: Elvis Mitchell on Is That Black Enough for You?!? Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. Elvis Mitchell is a critic I read early on in my career, and with this episode, I was delighted to talk with him about his new movie, Is That Black Enough for You?!? Mitchell's essay film is a rich and multilayered history of Black cinema, full of insights on micro and macro levels. We talked about the movie and follow the threads of his inspirations and ideas, which trace influences across film and music and crosscurrents in society and culture. He also relates encounters with Harry Belafonte and other luminaries that influenced his thinking. Our conversation took place during the New York Film Festival, where his film premiered, and at times reminded me of the flow of the movie itself. Is That Black Enough for You?!? starts streaming on November 11 on Netflix. Elvis Mitchell has been the host of KCRW's The Treatment since its creation in 1996. During that time, he has served as a film critic for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The New York Times, and hosted the TV series "Elvis Goes There" on Epix and "Elvis Goes There" for Turner Classic Movies. On today's episode of our daily NYFF60 edition, director Elvis Mitchell and executive producer Steven Soderbergh discuss Is That Black Enough For You?!?, a Spotlight selection of this year's festival, with NYFF Executive Director Eugene Hernandez. American film critic Elvis Mitchell's kaleidoscopic documentary creates a definitive narrative of the Black revolution in 1970s cinema, from genre films to social realism, from the making of new superstars to the craft of rising auteurs. With Is That Black Enough for You?!? (the title referencing a recurring line from Ossie Davis's 1970 benchmark Cotton Comes to Harlem), Mitchell takes a personal and panoramic approach, expressing his own experiences as a viewer while detailing the cinematic and political histories that led to this extraordinary flowering of a newly ascendant Black heroism. The Learning Tree, Watermelon Man, Shaft, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, Cool Breeze, Sounder, Super Fly, Coffy, The Spook Who Sat by the Door, Claudine, Uptown Saturday Night, Cornbread, Earl and Me, Killer of Sheep, and dozens more are analyzed with Mitchell's customary verve and perspicacity. This is a work of painstaking scholarship that's also thoroughly entertaining, an essential archival document and testament to a period of American film history unlikely to be repeated. Featuring interviews with Margaret Avery, Harry Belafonte, Charles Burnett, Laurence Fishburne, Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Suzanne de Passe, Glynn Turman, Billy Dee Williams, Zendaya, and more. A Netflix release.
