Faith and family can be anchors in a young life — or weights that threaten to pull us under. In this summer special of In the Key of Q, I revisit remastered episodes from four remarkable queer artists: JSky (UK), Ty McKinnie (US), Blake Mundell aka Courier (US), and Wuhryn Dumas (US). Each speaks candidly about growing up queer in environments steeped in religious expectation and traditional family roles. We hear how early love for music and community often existed alongside fear, shame, or silence, and how each of them has reclaimed their space in ways that honour both their identity and personal history. From Blake's candid account of conversion therapy to Wuhryn's reflections on becoming the role model he never had, these conversations challenge the idea that faith and queerness cannot coexist. Instead, they reveal the messy, human process of reconciling the two. It's an episode about reclaiming joy, asserting self-worth, and finding home, whether that's in a church, a studio, or simply in one's own skin.Timestamped Takeaways[00:00] Setting the stage: Introduction to the summer specials and the theme of faith and family for queer people.[00:01] Ty's Hallelujah baby years: Early joy in church life and music, before acceptance came with conditions.[00:02] Blake's nightly prayers: Internalising shame from evangelical messages, leading to years of self-questioning.[00:03] Wuhryn's early queerness: Family members naming his queerness before he understood it himself.[00:05] JSky's dual worlds: Balancing football culture with the joy of church music and his Nana's influence.[00:09] The false choice: Blake describes feeling forced to choose between being queer or Christian.[00:11] Unsafe at home: Ty recalls retreating from family conversations about sexuality and Proposition 8.[00:12] Direct confrontation: JSky's honest exchange with his religious grandmother sparks perspective change.[00:17] Reclaiming the sacred: Blake holds space for all his past selves; Ty builds new understanding with family.[00:21] Hugging on your own terms: Ty insists on physical affection despite discomfort.[00:21] Becoming the representation: Wuhryn's commitment to showing young queer Black boys that they can thrive.[00:24] Home you build: Closing reflections on finding sacred space beyond traditional institutions.Guest BioJSky – UK singer, broadcaster, and creative, known for blending music and storytelling. Send us a textHow's yall's summer going??? It's hot in New Orleans. And that humidity makes me glow HARD! I thought it'd be fun to wake the show up this week to introduce a couple of new conversations I had recently. First, I was contacted about an amazing skin care brand that has revolutionized the way brown skin is taken care of today. I was super intrigued. And asI learned more, boy was I doing things wrong! Brownkind was created by dermatologists of color to address the needs of melanin-rich skin. With products made with melanin in mind, your best skin day is every day. While most skincare companies use primarily caucasian skin to study effectiveness, we studied only those with melanin-rich skin. We focus on your skin using our proprietary blend of phytonutrients from start to finish, because proven science leads to proven results.Founded by dermatologists of color with over 50 years of experience, Brownkind is here to offer you the long-overlooked knowledge you need to give your skin the care it deserves. Listen as I am schooled in caring for brown skin by 2 of the world's leaders, Dr. Gauri Desai and Dr. Abhijit Desai and learn more about their amazing skin care brand at www.brownkind.com______________________________________________________________________Then later I welcome back my own personal favorites of mine- Past 2 term Mayor for the city of New Orleans, Mr. Marc Morial. Also leader of the National Urban League. Recently, I got to talk to him about the Homelessness situation in New Orleans. I wanted to make sure I was on the right side of things. I know and I SEE that our amazing Council person, and friend of mine, Ms. Lesli Harris has her fingers on the pulse, honey. It gives me chill bumps at the passion in her voice that gives way to the charm in her smile. The date proves we are on the right track! But there is always time to reflect on what can be done better. Life is always about getting better. And I know with passionate civic workers like Council Member Harris, along with the heart beat of our city- the future data will prove even better. AND I CLAIM THAT IN HIS NAME. This special episode weaves together the experiences of five queer artists who've navigated the exhausting terrain between authentic self and performed safety. From Matt Fishel's childhood joy being "bullied out" of him to Blake Mundell's voluntary enrollment in conversion therapy, these stories map the psychological geography of concealment. Each artist reveals how constant self-monitoring becomes second nature - whether it's Ty McKinnie learning not to talk with his hands or Vincent di Geronimo facing daily violence in small-town Connecticut. Yet these aren't simply survival stories. They're testimonies to the peculiar alchemy that transforms hidden pain into visible art, showing how queer resilience isn't about overcoming but about finding unexpected pathways through.Timestamped Takeaways[00:01:33] Childhood transformation: Matt Fishel recalls when joy turned to vigilance at age 11[00:02:56] Geographic isolation: Vincent di Geronimo's move from NYC to Connecticut brings immediate violence[00:05:37] Performative masculinity: Blake Mundell maintains image through sports and "manly" activities[00:06:44] Accidental outing: Aruan's preference for Wham! over Madness exposes him in classroom[00:10:57] Physical withdrawal: Matt Fishel becomes recluse after serious beating in Nottingham[00:11:57] Conversion therapy: Blake voluntarily enrolls seeking to eliminate "sinful desires"[00:13:42] Suicide attempt: Blake's confidential letter to pastor gets weaponised by church[00:19:06] Classroom cruelty: Vincent faces normalised homophobia in maths class[00:20:15] Body language policing: Ty McKinnie's father forbids talking with hands[00:21:43] Unexpected liberation: Blake finds freedom through telling friend's story[00:24:23] Musical salvation: Aruan discovers community through Prince and Bowie[00:26:37] Industry rejection: Matt Fishel told by labels to "cut the gay content"Guest BioThis special episode features five remarkable artists from the podcast's first season in 2021: UK-based Matt Fishel and Aruan, alongside US artists Vincent di Geronimo, Blake Mundell (performing as Courier), and Ty McKinnie. Welcome to a special summer episode of Material Matters. With listeners going on holiday and looking for something to read, rather than investigate a material it seemed like a good idea to talk about a new book instead. Robin Givhan is the Washington Post's senior critic-at-large, writing about politics, race and the arts. She won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2006 and is the author of The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History. Her latest book is entitled Make It Ours: Crashing the Gates of Culture with Virgil Abloh, which charts the life of the late designer from his childhood in Rockford, Illinois to his position as artistic director at Louis Vuitton menswear collection in Paris, the first black person to serve in that role in the brand's 164-year history. It also illustrates the profound changes that occurred in the luxury fashion industry over his short but fascinating career. In this episode, we talk about: why fashion matters; the role of the critic; Virgil Abloh's ‘confounding' qualities; how he created an extraordinary community; his imprint on fashion; how the world of luxury shifted around him; being the ‘ultimate non-perfectionist'; his controversial 3 per cent philosophy; judging value; craft and luxury; why the designer was ‘the right kind of Black man'; a pivotal relationship with rapper and producer Kanye West; the importance of T shirts; how Abloh became artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection; his tragic death; and his legacy. To buy a copy of Make it Ours, priced £20, from Material Matters contact us at: shop@materialmatters.designSupport the show

Today an encore presentation of an episode that last aired on July 25th. The statistics are pretty impressive. Canadians are staying home or at least they are staying away from the U.S. in this summer of 2025. This doesn't look like a one off, it could become generational. The deadline for a new trade deal between Canada and the U.S. is one week from today, what are the chances? Ever feel like you want to make summer fun and meaningful, but all the pressure and expectations just leave you feeling overwhelmed—or guilty? The statistics are pretty impressive. Canadians are staying home or at least they are staying away from the U.S. in this summer of 2025. Chantal Hebert and Bruce Anderson are here for our first of the summer's Good Talk specials.
We're bringing the holiday cheer to the middle of summer with a festive blast from the past! It's our full-on Christmas episode packed with games, laughs, surprise guests, and all the warm fuzzy chaos you'd expect from a Roz & Mocha holiday special. No snow required—just good vibes and great company. Happy Christmas in July from all of us!
