Gott wird Mensch – It´s Alright. On this Summer Special Nick from Freedom of Species and Lottie discuss what journalist Naomi Klein refers to as trickle down identity politics. This form of identity politics, typified by people such as Hillary Clinton, prioritises achieving a more diverse range of people in positions of power, with the argument that if more people from marginalised groups get into positions of power, these benefits will eventually “trickle down” to that group as a whole. We do this drawing on the following article that Nick has written: https://progressivepostings.wordpress.com/2021/02/26/idpols3/ This show is a 3CR Summer Special – see here for other Specials: https://www.3cr.org.au/summerspecials2022-2023 Music: Why Are You Like This? Label: Columbia 45900Year: 1973Condition: MPrice: $14.00From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original Columbia factory sleeve. This third single from Paul Simon's second solo album, "There Goes Rhymin' Simon," is incredibly hard to find in decent condition. It wasn't a big hit like the previous two singles ("Kodachrome" and "Loves Me Like A Rock"), but as a song, it tops both of those, IMHO, and doesn't get nearly enough play. As one of Simon's very best songs, I give the single two stars (our highest recommendation). According to Joel Whitburn, the music is based on J.S. Bach's 'O Sacred Heart.' Note: This beautiful 45 record has Mint labels and even more important — Mint audio! This song is just so incredibly beautiful in so many ways, it's great to hear it pure and strong with no distractions. The vinyl (styrene) grades very close to Mint, with just a few faint signs of storage wear.
In July, nearly 200,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended trying to cross the border -- a 325% increase from the average number of July apprehensions during the Trump administration. Ten of those apprehended were on the terror watch list. Enough fentanyl was seized to kill every single American Tune in as former acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf answers: What is going on at the southern border?
Steve Mandel is an audio engineer, producer and songwriter highly regarded for his work with The Roots. He first encountered his hero, Elvis Costello, while working on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, on which The Roots were the house band. Steve suggested they perform an old arrangement of Costello's High Fidelity and took a stash of albums for Elvis to sign. They would go on to collaborate on a variety of projects, from further performances on Fallon to Mandel-produced recordings of Costello's interpretations of Squeeze's Someone Else's Heart and American Tune by Paul Simon. Most notably, Elvis, Steve and The Roots worked together on the acclaimed 2013 album, Wise Up Ghost. In this first part of our conversation, Steve tells me how he came to be a Costello fan, what it was like working together and how Elvis gave Steve his favourite day of his life.

Happy Independence Day, July 4th, 2021! Let Freedom Ring!!! Uninterrupted songs that are uniquely American, and songs that are not. Songs of struggle, songs of joy, and songs of freedom. Freedom means different things for different people. This show, (with no back announcing) is celebrating The 4th of July, The United States' Independence Day. God Bless America!!! I designed this episode of #ITWWSS to be the soundtrack to your holiday weekend. It's… joyful, patriotic, a toe tapper, thought provoking, and fun! I hope it makes you want to sing along and dance, blast it out loud on the beach, turn it up to 10 on the highway, backyard, park, mountain top, or anywhere you are right now! I hope you'll share the link with your friends and family, workmates, roommates, mates, lovers, haters, or any one else that you can. We start where most children in the U.S.A. do, with the Pledge Of Allegiance, into a lovely choir, thanks to Neil Young, singing God Bless America. Enter Ray Charles to finish the song, as only he could. By chance, I thought the two versions blended well, so that's how I mixed it. Jimi Hendrix honors us with The Star Spangled Banner, into his original, Freedom. Both recorded live at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970. As hard as that may be to follow, Willie Nelson, performing Paul Simon's American Tune, makes for a great segue. As you might expect, this is an eclectic journey, with multiple genres and artists, equally diverse. Rock N Roll, Country Western, Cajun, Folk, Jazz, R&B, Reggae, Funk, World, etc. No borders, no boundaries, no limits. Pure artistic freedom, that's what it's all about! The non stop music continues with, Tears For Fears, Kinks, Neil Coty, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Heart, covering Led Zeppelin, George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen covering Bob Dylan, Mumbo Gumbo, Martin Sexton, Boxing Ghandis, Loggins and Messina, Bob Marley, The Killers, No Doubt covering Talk Talk, Billy Idol, George Michael, Dianne Reeves, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Scorpions, and the New York Rock and Soul Revue, featuring The Rascals, Phoebe Snow, and Michael McDonald. I cross referenced some of this music (all from my personal library) with Repeat Replay dot Com. The 20 Best Songs About Freedom. Some of these tunes would not be here, had I not read what they had to say. I support artistic freedom in every way possible! Thanks for your patronage and support! Let Freedom Ring!!!

My friend Barbara Shoup returns to the podcast to share lessons from her writing life and her new book about writing, A COMMOTION IN YOUR HEART. She talks candidly about struggling with depression, finding joy in writing even when it doesn’t lead to great fame and fortune, and the challenge of bringing forth something as ethereal as a story using only language. We chat about author estate planning, learning from writers you don’t like personally, ethically basing characters on real people, the cruelest editor rejection ever, and so much more. Barbara Shoup is the author of eight novels for adults and young adults, most recently An American Tune and Looking for Jack Kerouac, and the co-author of Novel Ideas: Contemporary Authors Share the Creative Process. Her short fiction, poetry, essays, and interviews have appeared in numerous small magazines, as well as in The Writer and the New York Times travel section. The recipient of the PEN Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Working Writer Fellowship and grants from the Indiana Arts Commission, she is the Writer-in-Residence at the Indiana Writers Center and a faculty member at Art Workshop International.

In this episode of Deep State Radio, a discussion about the state of the rudderless, visionless Middle East (and America's rudderless, visionless foreign policy) leads Rosa Brooks to frame that the core idea behind modern US foreign policy should be "strategic muddling through." Our panel of Rosa, Kori Schake, MacKenize Eaglen, and host, David Rothkopf, discuss. While all agree its how most of we who reside in the Deep State manage our personal lives, there is disagreement about the implications. Good for China? Good for Russia and Iran? Bad for our Arab allies? Maybe all of the above? Or is it still, as Kori concludes, the best of all times to be an American? At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, Italian emigrants were encouraged to come to the Mississippi Delta to farm. In this episode, John Bassie of Bolivar County shares his family’s story of coming to America and how they taught him to love their adopted country. For those Italian emigrants who made a home in the Mississippi Delta, the Fourth of July was always a big deal. Bassie recalls how his family celebrated with lots of eating and singing. He remembers those Independence Day celebrations as a cultural melting pot of food, music, and fun that involved the entire community. Photo: Digital Public Library of America
