Send us a Text Message.Waaay back in August of 2018 I was attending a Livingston Taylor songwriting and performing retreat at Boston University. We spent the day working on our songs and performance with Liv, Vance Gilbert and Melissa Ferrick. After dinner we all got our instruments and had an informal song swap in the main meeting room. This was kind of a round robin sort of thing where each of us would play a song and then the next person would play and so on. There was one guy who had been pretty quiet during the workshop, a little standoffish if I'm to be honest. So, I was pretty astonished when it came his turn to play. He pulled out his Martin and sang a great song, well performed. That person is Tod Pronto. I was impressed with Tod and started following his progress as he opened for Liv and Jonathan Edwards and other folk greats. Then, I found his Sunday morning 9am streaming show, Coffee with Tod on YouTube or on Facebook. Then, I found out that he also has a regular cartoon, Midlife Thesis, that is published every week. I mean, what can't he do? I'm Tim Rose and this is the Tim Tunes podcast. In this episode we'll interview dear friend and accomplished singer/songwriter/cartoonist Tod Pronto and listen to three of his songs recorded live during our visit. If You Don't Know About Eugene Ruffolo I'm Hoping You Willl Now. He's not just any talent. Eugene is a prolific and deeply personal songwriter. The world could use more of him. His music calms people down. A mutual friend who went to school with him in NY back when, had no clue about his talent until a zoom decades later during Covid. He then became addicted to his music and kept insisting I needed to listen. So, I did. I swear I could feel his music in my veins. I was taken aback by the beauty of his vocal gift and the genius of his songwriting. As good as any famous musical artist I've ever enjoyed. I honestly was shocked I had not heard about him. Apparently even Kenny Loggins was shocked he didn't know about him after both collaborated on a segment of someone else's record. In addition to his own songwriting, Eugene has shared studios and stages with many famous artists, drawn to his unique vocal talents. People like Garth Brooks and Tony Bennett and Kenny Loggins, Run-DMC, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Livingston Taylor, Spyro Gyra, just to name a few. He covers themes like forgiveness, the precious bonds of friendship, the search for existential truth. Among his many worldwide accolades his music has been referred to as “the jewel of folk pop' .You'll hear for yourself if you take a few minutes to listen to this podcast of our live in-studio bonding session. Eugene even took a little musical departure recently to write and record a collection of Italian songs celebrating his Italian heritage and his love of Mediterranean and pop music, folk music. And he wrote a classy little book to along with it, on food, music, and Italian culture, which I thought was very cool. Eugene Ruffolo also has a great sense of humor as evidenced by how he handled my ridiculous opening of my live show. En route to the studio, I reached in blindly to my purse while driving and accidentally sprayed ‘Band Aid Antiseptic Cleansing to Go Spray' in my mouth instead of the ‘Listerine Cool Mint' which comes in the exact same pump packaging. Needless to say I was an idiot. Panicking that I might have poisoned myself but knowing that Eugene was coming into the radio studio, I decided to risk not going to the emergency room and instead spent a few hyper minutes on the phone minutes before the show started with the nurse from Band Aids 800 # who sweetly read off the chemical ingredients I sprayed on my tongue and suggested I contact poison control. Had no time for that. Instead I played a few of Eugene's songs to calm myself down LOL and give my audience a taste of his extraordinary talent including new songs he's just released. In order we sampled: Late Bloomer (My personal favorite as the words were just so good!) Bella Maria Closer To You Poor Lonesome Me Like many who were just about to launch 'something' right when the pandemic hit, Eugene's best laid plans got put on hold. “Embarrassed to say it was actually because that little pandemic that pesky little pandemic got in the way because I finished the record in 2019 and I was just about to go on a tour to Europe, literally in April 1st of 2020, and then you know what happened there. So yeah, and I was about to release the record and then that happened and then I sort of just sat down." "It felt like a strange time to do it and I couldn't figure out what the right time was and all this time went by and then I thought, well, I need to get this, I need to get this record out. I have more music to make.” As far as Eugene Ruffalo's Italian songs go…his are quite beautiful. His Italian album is called ‘Canto per Mangiare'. “I've always embraced my Italian heritage, and I always had a sort of love of Italian music, because I started going to Italy when I was a child, and I went a lot during my twenties. I spent a lot of time there during my 20s. I had all these friends, and I didn't speak any Italian when I first started going. One of the ways that I learned how to speak Italian was through the music. I listened to a lot of music, and I would ask my friends, what does this mean and what does that mean.” Eugene wanted to get to the roots of real Italian music not the stereotypical Italian songs. “That's one of the impetuses behind this record was the fact that I think in America, people only know Italian music in two ways. They know it as classical, right? Let's just use Pavarotti. Bocelli is more of a pop guy, but he has sort of a classical, he has a classical aesthetic right? Or the Italian American Dean Martin singing Volare and that kind of thing. So, I wanted to get to more because there are a lot of other aspects of Italian music. So, my record really has a few elements to it. One of them is traditional Neapolitan folk music, which is really beautiful. And then the other is just singer-songwriters from the 70s, like the equivalents of the James Taylor, Cat Stevens that we have here, but that existed in the 70s in Italy. So, I covered some of their songs, and then I wrote a bunch of tunes myself.” Eugene's about to take his first trip in 4 years to perform. He's going overseas to Ireland. He's never been there. Then on to the Netherlands. But I told him he had to come do my show first because I needed to know more about him and wanted more people to hear him so they wouldn't have to say… How come I don't know you? You'll thank me for introducing you to Eugene Ruffolo on this podcast of our live conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show.

He has opened shows for many artists including Livingston Taylor, Emmylou Harris, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. The story of the Sword of Damocles, often associated with the imminent peril of those in power, also speaks to the ever-present balance of joy and responsibility and the universal human condition of mortality. Livingston Taylor's journey as an artist offers a profound narrative of the complexities and paradoxes of a creative life. On the surface, his life may appear charmed, marked by artistic freedom and the allure of fame. Beneath this lies a relentless journey of self-discovery, discipline, and the constant navigation of artistic challenges. Like Damocles, who discovered the weight of the king's crown was far heavier than he had imagined, Livingston has also experienced the pressures and demands that accompany a life dedicated to art. While growing up in a family of very talented individuals, including his brother James Taylor, Livingston's career reflects the trials that come with it and is a testament to his resilience and dedication to carving out his own unique and successful identity in the music industry. His journey highlights that behind every seemingly effortless display of talent and success lies a backdrop of hard work, sacrifice, and personal battles. Join us as Livingston integrates his songs in a live performance in between conversations about his life story, which, when mirrored against the tale of the Sword of Damocles, is a powerful reminder that the creative path is as much about embracing the joys and rewards as it is about enduring struggles and uncertainties. It underscores the importance of cherishing one's journey, with all its ups and downs, in pursuing artistic fulfillment and personal expression. From top-40 hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I'll Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman,” the last two recorded by his brother James, Livingston's creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres—folk, pop, gospel, jazz—and from upbeat storytelling and touching ballads to full orchestra performances. Livingston Taylor has never stopped performing since those early coffeehouse days, shared the stage with major artists such as Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffett, and Jethro Tull, and he maintains a busy concert schedule, touring internationally. He is a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway. In February 2019, Livingston released "The Best of LIVe - 50 Years of Livingston Taylor Live". This album features 11 song selections from his upcoming "LIVe - Livingston Taylor Live" Box Set. Upon release, the album was ranked in the top 10 and his song "Good Friends" was #2 on the Folk DJ chart. We're thrilled to bring back another one of our favorite episodes that we know you'll enjoy during Christmas week. Whitney spoke with Livingston Taylor in August 2020. He's a singer, songwriter, teacher and the brother of James Taylor. Livingston reminds us that you don't need to be on a stage to perform. We're performing every day with our words, choices, even body language. Simply stepping back to see that can be enormously clarifying, no matter where you are on your S Curve. -Original Show Notes: August 18, 2020- Our guest this week, Livingston Taylor, is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, performer, recording artist and teacher. He has enjoyed a storied career that has spanned five decades. Livingston has shared the stage with Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Buffett, Linda Ronstadt and his sister and brothers who are all musicians. Having spent 50 years understanding and perfecting the art of performance, Livingston has documented his learnings in the renowned book “Stage Performance: Stay lean and simple. Tell the Story.” In this episode of the Disrupt Yourself podcast, Livingston shares insights into family, life, love, teaching and the art of performance. We learn why Livingston prefers the periphery of the limelight and discover the melodic connections between speaking cadence and song structure. As a special treat, Livingston teaches us the importance of tone through the gift of song.

It’s not his most popular bootleg, but as a warts-and-all snapshot of this moment, it’s surprisingly revelatory. The show, recorded on May 14th of that year, is Billy’s first performance in Boston, Massachusetts. He’s the first opener on a three-band bill with Livingston Taylor and Jesse Colin Young. But, already there are hints of his future success and the changes he’d make over the next few years. Of the nine songs Billy plays here, Three will get updated on 1981’s Songs in the Attic and you can already hear some of the changes taking form. All but two are from Piano Man. And, one is only a few weeks old. But more than the songs themselves, this recording is a rare glimpse of Billy between his first hit song, Piano Man, and Streetlife Serenade, an album he felt was a failure out of the gate. You’ll hear the west coast feel of his live band, an approach that he’d soon consciously jettison for the tougher East Coast sound that would become his hallmark. And, you’ll hear him wrestle with technical issues, often humorously. He’s also developing his rapport with his audience, and their response points to where his career would soon go. ¿Qué tal ha ido la semana? Vale, mejor no pregunto. Everybody loves me, baby.

Escuchar audio

With a voice filled with grit and soul, Carly Jo Jackson brings the heat of the Florida sunshine to all she does. She has a vocal tone that is as infectious as her charismatic stage presence. She caught the attention of some big names in the music and entertainment business, opening shows for Michael McDonald (who also provided vocals on her recent EP), Kenny Loggins and Dennis Quaid and serving as a musical inspiration to Jeff Bridges who recently featured her on his Sleep Club website. Other notable performances include her appearance in 2014 on America’s got Talent, where she appeared in two televised episodes and advanced to Judgement Week; performing as an Emerging Artist at 2018’s Summerfest; singing backup vocals to Kenny Loggins at 2019’s Hawaii Songwriters Festival; performing at the renowned 30A Songwriters Festival along with Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Shawn Mullins, Livingston Taylor and more; opening a San Francisco 49ers game; and winning the 2015 Belk Southern Musician Showcase. In late 2019, she released her EP Au Naturel, produced by Chris Pelonis and Lost Coast Records and distributed by Jimmy Buffet’s Cherry Bomb Records.
**NOTE** This episode was recorded in November 2019 and published on my other podcast, The Songwriters Podcast. In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with singer, songwriter, guitarists, storyteller, sailor and road warrior, Scott Kirby. We talk about his long career as a musician, and where he goes for writing inspiration, and how a little bit of luck took him a long way. More on Scott Website: https://www.scottkirby.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scottkirbykeywest/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scottkirby.keywest Singer, songwriter, guitarist, storyteller, sailor and road warrior are all words that aptly describe Scott Kirby. Writing songs for a new CD, performing 150 live shows a year throughout the US and Canada, and holding down the stage at his own club—Key West’s Smokin’ Tuna Saloon—keep the barnacles off this modern-day troubadour. A creative lyricist and accomplished finger-style acoustic guitarist with an expressive voice, Kirby describes himself as a direct descendant of the ’70s singer/songwriter movement. His very first 45 was a Beatles record, and he came of musical age listening to James Taylor and other great songwriters of that era. He has never received any formal musical training but often credits Taylor with teaching him how to play the acoustic guitar. “If it weren’t for the hundreds of solitary hours in my room in Concord, New Hampshire, with a guitar and a James Taylor book, I never would have learned to play,” says Kirby. Speaking of New Hampshire and musical influences, let’s not forget fellow New Hampshire native Tom Rush who was taking the folk scene by storm in Kirby’s formative years. Coincidentally, Kirby connected with both of these artists in Key West 30 years later, which is a whole other story. After a few years in high school bands and a stint in his early 20s as a bass guitarist with a group, Kirby drifted away from music and became immersed in a career in politics: managing campaigns, writing and producing radio and TV ads, and overseeing the office of a leader in the New Hampshire legislature. He was also guitarless for eight years! In 1988, however, after tiring of the political rat race and the length and severity of New England winters, he bought a new guitar, relentlessly practiced his chops, and planned his escape. Six months later Kirby was living in Key West and performing five nights a week on a balmy beach facing the Gulf of Mexico. Kirby started writing songs after some inspirational late-night words from legendary songwriter Shel Silverstein and further encouragement from Peter Mayer, who had just joined the Coral Reefer Band. A year later he found himself recording his first CD, Too Damn Yankee, in Jimmy Buffett’s Shrimpboat Sound Studio with Peter and Jim Mayer and Roger Guth. “This was a very lucky break for me, but I was in a bit over my head,” says Kirby. “Peter, Jim and Roger were incredibly patient with me and it was a fantastic learning experience.” Between 1993 and 2006, Kirby continued to write new material and recorded four more CDs with Key West producer/engineer Dan Simpson. In 2008 luck struck again when famed drummer/producer Russ Kunkel offered to produce Kirby’s Row Me Home CD at his studio in Los Angeles. “Next thing I know I’m cutting my songs in the Hollywood Hills with Russ, bassist Leland Sklar and guitarist Dean Parks and feeling like the luckiest guy in the world.” Speaking of luck, Kirby’s wistful ballad “Lucky Enough” struck a chord with listeners on Sirius/XM Radio Margaritaville, which exposed his music to more markets around the country and led to his current touring schedule through 35 states each year. He continues to receive regular airplay on the station. Kirby joined a group of friends in 2011 to open the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, a 200-seat bar and music venue in Key West where Kirby performs often in winter months. The Tuna is also host to the Key West Songwriter’s Festival. The festival is in its 20th year and has exploded into the largest event of its kind in the country, featuring more than 150 songwriters every year. In 2013 Kirby released his seventh CD, Sol Searching, a collaboration with producer/engineer/musician Lew London. “Lew was great to work with as he’s so multi-talented,” says Kirby. “He performed for years with Steve Goodman and is such a fine songwriter in his own right that he really understands how to build a sound around acoustically based songs.” Scott Kirby’s latest CD, Chasing Hemingway’s Ghost, was recorded with and produced by Matt and Andy Thompson in their studio in Nashville and released in 2017. When it comes to songwriting, Kirby respects authenticity and counts on everyday life and his coastal roots for much of his inspiration. “I don’t wake up every day thinking about writing the next commercial hit,” says Kirby. “Songwriting for me is about telling stories, expressing emotions, and commentary on things I may find funny or absurd.” Over the years Kirby has shared the stage with some of his favorite artists: Carole King, Jimmy Buffett, Livingston Taylor, Tom Rush, Mac McAnally, Peter Mayer and others. When not on the road or performing in Key West, Kirby splits his time between Livingston, Montana, and the coast of New Hampshire where he can often be found sailing, a lifelong passion of this descendant of Newfoundland fishermen. Yes, Scott Kirby is—as he readily admits—lucky enough.
So loved my conversation with Livingston Taylor. "He is a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes, and ineffable warmth that connects him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway." https://livingstontaylor.com/
You would think this would be a basic life skill, but it seems almost nobody knows it, so please spread the word. When someone gives you a compliment, what should you do? Do you say, “What? No! Not at all. That’s ridiculous.” Do you give details of why you disagree? That’s what most people do. They refuse it. They deny it. But think of how inconsiderate that is. It takes courage to give you a compliment. It’s a little vulnerable for someone to admit they like something about you, and then to go up to you and tell you so. So when they do, is that nice of you to argue with them about it? How do you think that makes them feel in that moment? So, when someone gives you a compliment, what should you do? Just say, “Thank you.” Nothing more. It feels strange, but it’s the right thing to do. It doesn’t mean you agree. You’re just thanking them for their vulnerable courage in that moment, for taking the trouble to tell you something nice. Then sincerely return their interest. Ask their name, or something more about them. This advice came from Livingston Taylor, and was originally aimed at musicians, since they often get compliments after a gig, and always actively disagree with these compliments. But everyone can use this simple life skill.

Elaine Diehl spoke by phone with singer/songwriter Livingston Taylor on November 14th about his upcoming concert at the 20th Century Theater on December 4th. He's also been teaching at the Berklee College of Music for 30 years.
A scene near the beginning of the Russian movie version of War and Peace (1965-67) conveys the inner dialogue of a young woman as she lays dying after childbirth -- actually, as she has just died. Her spirit wonders to herself in sorrowful bewilderment: "I gave everything to everyone else, sought to love everyone else, but I was rejected by them, treated badly by them. I don't understand." The passage is moving, and also unsettling, because the character's inner reality comes to expression only in her closing moments, and it is most definitely un-resolved. As Mary and I watched this, we both thought to ourselves, May it not be so with us. Please let it not be so with us when our time comes -- whether that is sooner or later. This podcast affirms three essentials, three sine qua nons, of the human heart -- really, the human self -- as we face death, whether "early", whether accidental, or whether "in the nature of things" in old age. Three essentials for a happy exit. Each of these I would say is necessary and primary, not optional nor secondary. Each is core and decisive. Each is "required". Wonder what you'll think. Hope you'll like the music, too, from an excerpt by Gordon Lightfoot, whose music has never appeared on the cast before, and from Livingston Taylor. Soft Rock, OK, but quietly profound, perhaps, in both cases. LUV YOU!

Liz and Sarah start with a poetic update— a reading of Mary Oliver’s “Wild Geese.” Then in From The Treadmill Desks Of, they discuss the “cacophony of choice” they’re dealing with now that their overall at ABC Studios is over. It’s exciting that they’re free to do ANYTHING— but also overwhelming. As they analyze how to navigate their opportunities, they decide to stretch but also stay in their wheelhouse. One this is for sure— they’ll be Riding The Dragon, which they discuss in The Mailroom segment. This week’s Hollywood Hack: Take No For An Answer (something they wish they’d done sooner on a recent endeavor). Music has a way of bringing people together, and is a language we share. Recovery has its own language, within its own culture of addiction. We are all affected by substance use disorder (SUD) - personally, through family and friends, and as a society, economically and politically. The numbers tell part of the story, however it’s the people that who have lived this struggle and the people who fight for recovery and education everyday that bring this story to the surface - into our living rooms, boardrooms, schools and the stage. Above The Basement met with people who care deeply about this cause: those in recovery, the doctors who treat and support our patients and families who have lost loved ones, and musicians who have had first hand experience of with addiction and understand the toll it can have on careers and families. Our discussions began in August 2018 with Kristen Williams Haseotes, the founder of Above the Noise Foundation, Maureen Cavanagh, author of "If You Love Me - A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughters Opioid Addiction and Robin Houston-Bean who honors her son every day having started The Sun Will Rise Foundation, Inc.. We continued our discussions, learning along the way with addiction medicine experts Dr. Sarah Wakeman and Dr. Laura Kehoe from the Mass General Substance Use Disorders Initiative. At RecoveryFest 2018 we sat with Fitz (Fitz & The Tantrums), Livingston Taylor, B-Rain, Grace Kelly and several others in recovery. There is a sense of pride in all of these voices, and our guests are people with hopes and dreams, successes and failures, ups and downs just like the rest of us. The synergy of music and the message of recovery was undeniably powerful and special on September 29th at Recovery Fest 2018. There was palpable energy without substances, elation without drugs, and all around us, simply so many reasons to care. Click below to listen and please share. Song List: Song 1: Amazing Grace - Grace Kelly Song 2: Otherside - Macklemore Song 3: America the beautiful - Livingston Taylor Song 4: More than just a dream - Fitz and the Tantrums Song 5: Live my life - B-RAiN

When I heard him live for the first time, I was blown away not only by how well he sang and played, but how easy he makes it seem. I became an instant fan. There are a lot of artists out there, but few even come close to the amount of talent he has. He combines Jazz, R&B, Pop like nobody I know. He's so good he makes you want to go home and practice your scales. If you haven't had a chance to hear Matt, you're missing out on a world class artist." - Javier Colon, Universal Records and winner of NBC’s “The Voice”

Webster's Dictionary defines the word "potential" as - capable of being, but not yet in existence. This definition alone can best describe the life-journey of Calvin Nowell. Pursuing purpose and destiny has been the path Calvin Nowell has taken for most of his life. Knowing it was there but not understanding how to manifest it was the question he asked for years. Eventually, he decided to start somewhere. On this path, there were a few obstacles that presented itself. One of the biggest hurdles Calvin has overcome was his struggle with his weight. Calvin unfortunately weighed over 450lbs. At six foot four he was displaying a 60-inch waist and a coat size of 64/66L. Although he weighed a lot physically, the emotional weight seemed to outweigh the pounds. Fear and insecurity were the driving forces behind his struggle. However, there was always an inner knowing that he wasn't going to be overweight if given the chance to record a CD. After losing over 215lbs and many layers of emotional weight, Calvin has started somewhere on the journey to share his experience with everyone. "I always felt that God told me that he would bless whatever I put my hands to, but I had the problem of not putting my hands to anything. At the core of the title cut, "Start Somewhere", co-written and produced with veteran producer Mark Heimmerman, the theme of procrastination runs throughout the song. "It is a message that I believe every person can benefit from. I have a real desire to see people lose the weight that is holding them back, whether it is physical, spiritual, or emotional. We all have an appetite out of control that is ultimately weighing us down Hebrews 12:1 says it best, "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." "One thing that I tell people is that I lost the weight from the inside out and not the outside out in." With a heart and passion for pursuing the presence of God, a deeper relationship with Christ was the only way out of Nowell's struggle. What seemed to be his misery has amazingly evolved into ministry. Calvin began leading worship throughout his journey and has developed a special knack for worship. With the musical influences from Fred Hammond, India.Arie, Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, Calvin has developed a unique cross-cultural sound. Since the door of "potential" has been opened, Calvin is a gifted singer/songwriter living in Franklin, TN. All of the songs from Start Somewhere were co-written and co-produced by Calvin. He has toured and recorded with some of today's top artists and worship leaders including, Michael W. Smith, Nicole C. Mullen, Israel Houghton, Katinas, Livingston Taylor, Helen Baylor, Vicky Yohe, Geron Davis, and Lynda Randle. Calvin has appeared on many television and video outlets including, ABC's Good Morning America, TBN's "Praise The Lord", TCT Alive, Pax TV, The Dove Awards, Michael W. Smith's Worship DVD.Outside of music, Calvin is a professional motivational speaker and workshop facilitator. Calvin has appeared on national television shows with Dr. Don Colbert (Celebrity health professional/author) as his special guest. Calvin has spoken at major corporate arena events highlighting his weigh loss testimony. Calvin has received endorsements from other celebrities, such NBA player, Allan Houston; National recording artist, Kirk Whalum; National recording artist, Nicole C. Mullen, Producers Mark Heimmerman (dc Talk, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant) and Chris Harris (CeCe Winans, Jaci Velasquez, Anointed), and Evangelist/motivational speaker, James Ryle (Board Founder of Promise Keepers).Start Somewhere, his debut EP mixes heartfelt worship with elements of Pop and RB. Nowell consistently proves to be one of the few worship leader/songwriter in modern times with the ability to cross multiple music genres and generations while retaining true authenticity at each one. "There are many styles of music that I write and sing. However, I choose to display the various different sounds but use the same theme of worship." This project features the mainstream inspirational song, "Truth and Start Somewhere", worship ballads, "Unrestrained and Open My Heart" as well as Calvin's personal testimony that has inspired millions. There's only one quote that can best sum up Calvin's journey and it is from St. Francis of Assisi, "Start with what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you're doing the impossible." Start Somewhere and change the weigh you are!We had the privilege of sitting down with Calvin and listening to his incredible story and where his journey has brought him thus far. He's an extremely gifted and talented individual with a personality that lights up a room. After a few months the teacher declared him unteachable. He was memorising the material instead of reading the music. Last week I attended my 35th reunion of the Harvard College Class of 1972. It was a lively, poignant event which featured an address by the school's most successful dropout, a reminder by the Rev. Peter Gomes that we are a community of the living and the dead, an anti-war ditty, real good music by Livingston Taylor, and a classmate's words of wisdom at the final brunch in Eliot House.
