You know the viral videos - the ones showing Black people, usually men, attacking unsuspecting Asian folks, usually elderly Asians. These are atrocious, awful incidents of course.  We don't want anybody to be harmed.  AND, since we can hold two thoughts in our heads at the same time, we also need to state that these viral videos are giving us an inaccurate impression of anti-Asian hate. For example, it turns out, according to a University of Maryland, College Park study, that most anti-Asian hate crimes are committed by white people, NOT Black people. Significantly so – more than three-quarters of offenders of anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents, from both before and during the pandemic, have been white.   We want to have this conversation as part of our mixed race Asian arc, focusing on what we believe should be a point of solidarity but has instead been misunderstood to be a divisive issue with regard to Black and Asian Americans, with actual data as a reminder for all of us – that we need to train ourselves to pause when we see narratives that pit one historically marginalized group against another historically marginalized group, and ask ourselves if they're true, because they're often serving simply as a distraction to change the conversation, to move it away from the “real” enemy - white supremacy.  Dismantling white supremacy is where all of us - Asians, Black folks, white folks, and more – need to keep our energy focused.   What to listen for: Hate crime statistics - which show that even through the rise of anti-Asian hate through to the Covid years, there were still more anti-Black hate crimes than anti-Asian hate crimes. Perpetrators of hate crimes are predominantly white, as confirmed by multiple studies – NOT people of color, contrary to misperception due to viral videos Why is there this erroneous narrative of Black on Asian crime?   Taking apart the idea of white adjacency, and challenging more people of Asian descent to stand in solidarity against the common enemy -- white supremacy. Examples of Black and Asian solidarity throughout history. Let me give you a little history about Dominicans, in case you didn't know. The Dominican Republic is a country in the Caribbean that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Haitians, as you might know, are black. Yet, somehow, many Dominicans believe that the border makes them decidedly NOT BLACK. They believe this despite the fact that the first slaves brought over to the New World were actually taken to Hispaniola. By Julissa Castillo

On November 20, Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted after a hyper-visible trial presided over by a judge who was apparently hostile to the deceased victims and strongly biased in favor of the defendant. The case seemed straightforward to people who knew the facts of the case, but many were surprised by the result. Not Black people. Kamryn recalls when this exact same thing happened with the killer of Trayvon Martin in 2013. These are both part of a centuries-long pattern of secretly-sanctioned lynchings that Black people have all grown up having to understand to navigate the world. When I was in school, my favorite subject was mathematics. I absolutely loved algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. I guess I was just one of those weird kids that loved numbers and what you could do with them. To be honest with you, I suppose the reason I loved math so much was the fact that it had a definitive answer to every problem presented. Only one answer was correct and yours was either right or wrong…that's it…it left no room for interpretation, analysis, discussion, or a professor's mood swings, like essay tests in English Literature. There were absolutely no gray areas, period! Well, if you live the Christian life very long, you soon learn that, sometimes, there seem to be gray areas when it comes to deciding what's right or wrong, good or bad…in other words, what is sin and what isn't. Now, there are some things that leave absolutely no doubt. In fact, there are 10 of them. They're called the 10 Commandments. When God says, “Thou shalt not,” well, thou shalt not. But what about the things that don't make the Top 10, that aren't chiseled in stone, but are close enough to make us pause and think…is this a sin or isn't it? After all, God's word tells us to abstain from even the appearance of sin! Well, that's what I'll be dealing with on today's podcast. Well take a look at the gray areas of right and wrong and learn what to do: When It's Not Black-and-White. Stay with me, because that's coming up on this episode of Living Lite Today.

If a person identifies with an ethnicity society has this weird expectations that this person must act like their ethnicity. If they do not they are labeled as not enough. For people who attend or grow up in predominantly white areas, this is a common frustration. In societies terms speaking "proper" means you sound white. Society continues to put black people in boxes and not wanting them to express themselves in individualistic ways. If you act "too Black" then you are deemed ghetto and ethnic. If you act "too white" you are not black. This topic could be written into a whole book series. It is a very frustrating situation to deal with. "Compliments" such as "you speak well" or "you are pretty for a black girl" are not compliments and they are rooted in racism. This is just my experience but I know its something many can relate to. Inside of Black culture, some groups aren't always included when it comes to identity. As we celebrate both Pride Month and Juneteenth this month, we can combine the two to lift up communities that have been marginalized and celebrate activists that have fought for the freedom of Black people.   This week, Dr. Venus shines a spotlight on 7 Black Queer Freedom Fighters and Black Queer advocates, from the literary genius of the 1920s to the brilliant strategy behind the scenes of the March on Washington, these heroes have fought and died for Black freedom, but are seldom cited or celebrated in our society. We were born in a historical time, but we won't be able to make our money, grow, and help others if we sacrifice our freedom and rights for a point of view.   Let's talk about it.   Key Takeaways: [2:28] Black people have a commitment to freedom, but we can't say we are fully about liberation if we are going to leave out or ignore a group of people. Freedom includes all of us, not just some.   [4:25] We have to liberate ourselves from the conditioning of White Supremacy and be the change we want to see in the world vs. pointing the finger at someone else. You can love someone without agreeing with them. What matters the most is that we walk our walk and love each other rather than oppressing or ignoring someone who seems different or whose lifestyle we may not understand.    [7:03] We also can't blame ourselves fully for marginalizing our brothers and sisters. It's not a bad thing or something that makes us bad people. It's just White oppression being acted out in Black environments. When we can't allow people to be who they are, we lose in every way from opportunities to money.   [9:39] If we can have empathy and grace for players in the Bible, we can have it for the people in our families and the human beings around us. Human beings are imperfect and people do the best they can with what they've got.   [10:29] Judging others is not necessarily the problem. It's a problem when you make it a problem for the person you are judging. If you are committed to winning, you have to be emotionally mature enough to know that we need help as we grow and succeed, and that means allowing in people who don't perform and act like you.   [11:46] If someone has something that can make your life better and is willing to help, it's a form of self-sabotage to turn it down, especially when it comes to money and social change. You end up handicapping the people that depend on you. Dr. Venus knows that even means accepting the help of White allies who are there to support her along with her own mission of birthing 100 Black Women Billionaires and launching a new tech brand.   [14:11] If we are talking about Black Pride, we must be proud not just of our progress, but of our ability to make room for us to be individuals. When you make room for people to be themselves, you provide the ability for true change, growth, and unified power. In Dr. Venus's community, we are not doing hate. Not Black hate, Asian hate, etc.   [17:01] We can celebrate both Pride and Juneteenth this month. Juneteenth is Black people's version of Independence Day, when slavery ended for real and when we celebrated because it marked our emancipation.   [18:50] Dr. Venus lists 7 Freedom Fighters and LGBTQ Advocates that may not be recognized regularly:  Audre Lorde - Died in 1992 and fought for Civil Rights and the Women's Movement. Check out Zami. James Baldwin - Essayist, writer, and activist. At Dr. King's side during the “I Have a Dream” speech. Check out I Am Not Your Negro. Marsha P. Johnson - Pillar of the LGBTQ community in New York City. Trans Woman who fought for queer rights while struggling with mental illness and homelessness. Check out Pose.  Bernard Rustin - Leader in Civil Rights, Strategic advisor for Dr. King and helped 1963 March of Washington, Queer rights pioneer. Barbara Smith - Author, Considered Mother of Black Feminism. Andrea Jenkins - First Openly Trans Black Woman elected to political office.   [23:08] Identity is not sexuality, yet people conflate the two. Each culture has a language, and Trans and Queer cultures each have their own language code and lexicon.   [24:21] If you are committed to making money, you are going to have to get interested in understanding how other people see themselves. Marketing has everything to do with relational dynamics, and you have to know who you are talking to, and how they see themselves.   [27:20] Trans rights are human rights, yet Trans Women are murdered by Black Men more than any other group, in much the same way a Black Man would get lynched for being accused of raping a White woman. It's important to know that this is still an aggression and attack on Black Women's bodies.   [28:27] Your truth is a truth but not the truth. We have space to have dignified conversations if we truly want to move forward and create a new infrastructure that we can succeed in.   [31:48] Dr. Venus shares her love for Black Women. Special Guest! "Celebrity Comedian & Feature film Actor" Detroit Red Host, Yolanda Nollie & Celebrity Co-Host , Jonathan Haywood(Stinger J) July 12 , 2019 Comedian Detroit Red Bio- Hilarious, "Outrageously funny," "Comedic genius," are words that describe Red's comedy. Hilarious because sometimes his jokes have a tendency to fly over your head but when you catch them, you can't stop laughing. Outrageously funny because of his dynamic, sixth sense, ad lib abilities and his comedic genius are clearly reflected by his lightening quick wit. Red's humor has the ability to touch the hearts of people from all walks of life; young and old. Although he will make you laugh till it hurts, you will also get the message in his jokes. Red started his comedy career in a Detroit based comedy club (CoCo's House of Comedy) in October of 1998. Since his first performance on stage Red has matured into one of the most realistic comedians in the circuit today. Taking his outlook and spin on real life and putting it to jokes, Red will have you doubled over in your seat with laughter. Like all of us, Red (husband and father), has had obstacles to overcome in comedy as well as in "everyday" life but he has found a way to take obstacles and turn them into milestones His enthusiasm and positivity is not only reflected on stage but exudes into every aspect of his life. There's not a person Red encounters that is not touched by his positive and humorous outlook on life. If you are in a bad mood Red has a way of always getting that giggle out of you, sometimes before you even realize it your mood is uplifted instantly. Like they say laughter is medicine for the soul. So, Red is not just a comedian he is a doctor for the soul, a comediologist, ---if you will. Red is one chosen to bring a smile to your face. So why not enjoy one of God's greatest gifts (laughter) and book Red for your next event. Red is capable of hosting, featuring and headlining comedy shows. He performs clean, as well as, adult comedy and will travel if accommodations are provided. Keeping true to his motto, "No show to big or small" Red knows how to deliver that knock out comedy punch to any type of crowd leaving them wanting more.. LC090: Skill or Trust When Hiring a Technical Co-Founder?

Today’s question: Today’s question comes from Thomas. If you had to choose a technical co-founder, which one would you choose? A) A “rockstar developer” that you haven’t worked with and don’t know very well, or B) A good developer with good skills, AND with whom you already have a good relationship and working history? Jake’s answer: This is a great question and it seems like a black and white scenario. If I had to just choose one without doing any of the steps in between, I’d choose the person I have a relationship with. The reason I would choose that person is because when you pick a co-founder you are essentially getting married to that person. You want to make sure that person is someone you know, like, and trust. It’s Not Black and White However, this situation is black and white, but it doesn’t have to be. Before I make my decision, I’d go hang out with the rockstar developer. Do stuff together and see what kind of guy he is. How does he interact with other people? What are his likes and dislikes? You have to make sure the person is good at the things you need him to be good at (not just development). Many startups can get by in the early stages with a mid-level developer who is hard working and fits with the company. It comes down to trust. Are you going to be able to trust that this person will do everything you need him to do? If you’re just looking for another developer to add to the team, that’s different. But for a technical co-founder, you have to know and trust the person for things to be successful. To be clear, it’s really difficult to find a technical co-founder like this. That’s why Launchpeer even exists - we are essentially a startups’ technical co-founder. Ask Your Own Question Got questions about startups and/or startup culture? We’ve got answers. What does a trailblazer owe us? That's a question we're pondering this week, as we discuss actor Issa Rae's spicy monologue on Kanye West - who many believe is betraying his black identity, in support of Trumpian conservatism - and Germaine Greer's controversial views on rape. Once a radical second-wave feminist, is she in danger of becoming a parody? Also this week, we discuss the misogyny in social media; the concept of ‘moral triumphalism'; why processed food feels like a cuddle; and the glory of being single. And of course, we also discuss the 20 year anniversary of Sex And The City. If the arrest, humiliation and resultant brouhaha over the case of Harvard scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates has taught us anything, it is that we still dwell in separate worlds -- ones which rarely meet. And while some wags have rushed to tell us that the case shows us the continuous clash of class, I beg to differ. If anything, it shows us just the opposite. When it comes to Black people, of whatever wealth, status, class or prominence, the normal rules don't apply. Indeed, Blacks are the ever present exceptions to the rules. Consider this: Americans have said and believed for the better part of a century, that saying: 'A man's home is his castle. Not Black men. How else could 'Skip' Gates get busted on his doorstep -- for disturbing a non-existing peace? In law, a homeowner's property rights doesn't end at his front door. It extends to the street, at the curbside. This is an appurtenance. Imagine if a person slips and falls on the sidewalk in front of a home. What person has a claim on the homeowner, not the city. 'Skip' Gates was busted not because he violated the law, but because he violated the emotions of the cop who entered his house. He angered him when he initially refused to exit his house; and he angered him further when Prof. Gates demanded the cop's ID. President Barack Obama was right when he called the bust 'stupid', but, as usual, politics prevailed when American rednecks responded with howls of protest. (One need look no further than the email sent by a Boston cop in response to the Gates case, where the distinguished educator was described as a 'jungle monkey' -- no, a 'banana-eating jungle monkey'..' if memory serves! Furthermore, imagine what it takes, not just to write this -- but to write this to a reporter). They took it personally -- just as the cop in Gates' home took it personally. Will a beer with the boys put this fire out? I doubt it, for it ignores what happens everyday, in dozens of states, to countless men and women who don't have Harvard Ph.Ds, or friends in the White House. The sad truth is, being Black in America is akin to being born low-caste in India, where separate and unequal rules remain, despite promises in their constitution. Obama's election hasn't changed reality, but may mask it, by providing cover for the ugly things that Blacks endure in a nation where the elites claim a false 'post-racialism.' A few brewskis ain't gonna change that either. (c) '09 Mumia Abu-Jamal

This week's show opens with a look at the Iran nuclear deal that President Trump pulled the U.S. out of. Both Mike and Jay agree that it was an imperfect deal, but Mike feels we should have stayed in and worked to improve it. Jay feels that the deal was far more imperfect than Mike does, but he agrees that the president's propensity for walking away from international agreements isn't the best way to handle things. The Guys next turn to the historic summit meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung Un, which President Trump announced would be held in Singapore on June 12. Jay sees this as a potential step in the right direction and though Mike has plenty of doubts about President Trump's diplomatic ability, he agrees that after decades of stalemate, things could possibly be changing for the better. Even so, it's still very early days, and the U.S. is dealing with an incredibly secretive and untrustworthy country, so expectations should be very low. After that Mike and Jay discussion Gina Haspel, President Trump's nominee to lead the CIA. Mike acknowledges Haspel's experience and expertise, but agrees with Senator John McCain that Haspel's position on torture / 'enhanced interrogation techniques' is disqualifying. Jay disagrees arguing that much of the outcry against Haspel is simply due to her being Donald Trump's nominee. Next is a look at the Senate primary elections in Ohio, West Virginia, and Indiana. Neither Mike nor Jay saw much to surprise them, with Jay pointing out that there seemed to be a move away from extreme Republicans. Finally, Mike and Jay talk about former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen raising millions peddling his connection to the president. Mike says that while this sort of thing goes on all the time - in Republican and Democratic administrations - he's troubled by yet another Russia connection. Jay sees things more or less the same way, and in discussing the topic he clarifies his position on Trump, Russia, and collusion. **What Mike's Reading** [Why the specter of Marx still haunts the world](https://wapo.st/2IdEAKx).   [](https://econ.st/2Ii8ayN) [Rulers of the world: read Karl Marx!](https://econ.st/2Ii8ayN) [](https://nyti.ms/2IdjRqm) [Happy Birthday, Karl Marx.
