As we are ALL still reeling from the results of the 2020 presidential election, our QPOC fam dissects the early returns, shares how they participated in this year’s election, and discuss what the future of the political world is looking like for us. We also take time to celebrate the many LGBTQ+ folks who recently won both local and national elections in the U.S. We might not have had the “Blue Wave” we were hoping for, but we definitely got some kind of rainbow wave. Gobble me, swallow me, drip down the side of me...that’s right y’all, today we are talking about none other than the Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion hit “WAP”! And as a song that celebrates Black Woman empowerment, there’s plenty to cover: the double-standard of men versus women being sexual, the debate over where the song empowers or degrades women, and of course the tired-ass “what about the kids” argument. This week, Ashley and Carlos co-host as our own Cardi and Megan, and we are joined by TWO special guest femme-cees, Chantel Whitt (@chantelwhitt) and Isake Smith (@isakesmith). It's a This QPOC Life summer special with none other than Bob the Drag Queen! The Black Lives Matter movement has taken center stage in the national conversation in America. And as many White people (and brands, sports teams, etc.) are “waking up” to the ills of systemic racism, we can’t help but wonder if it’s real or if it’s all for show. On today’s episode, we discuss performative “wokeness” that we are seeing in the culture, how to spot it, and what to do when confronted by it. Then, we interview with Bob The Drag Queen, winner of season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, about her recent comedy special Bob The Drag Queen, Live At Caroline’s, and discuss how she performs activism through her drag and comedy. Michael Roberson discusses the ballroom community -- which drew mainstream notice courtesy of Madonna's 1990 "Vogue" video and Jennie Livingston's 1991 documentary Paris Is Burning -- and its ability to unify traditionally excluded individuals. These self-made families forge bonds that span a lifetime and has developed into a global subculture. He believes that the family dynamics created within ballroom culture can teach the rest of us how to develop healthy communities. Michael Roberson is an adjunct professor at the New School and Union Theological Seminary and a senior scholar for the Center for Race, Religion and Economic Democracy. He's a member of the sound art collective ULTRA-red and a creative consultant for the FX series Pose. You, dear listener, might have wavy, curly, coily, or kinky hair. TODAY, we're talking about the obsession with our hair. Not our own obsession with our hair, #TeamNatural. Rather, the obsession non-POC seem to have with touching our hair. You probably had a variation of this conversation at least once in your life: “I just love your hair! It’s so beautiful. Can I touch it?” A lot of the time, you’re lucky if they ask. Why is it, for many POC, our hair becomes a reason to establish personal boundaries with others? Beyond hair, we talk about expectations to conform to a particular professional (Read: White) image. Natural hairstyles like locs or afros are banned in the workplaces. Women might be "expected" to wear heels. You might dress in a manner that's "too flamboyant". How do you unpack that in order to live more authentically? Ashley Nesby is back for an encore performance. She joins the Fab Four in to create the Thriving Five. We jump into self-care as Jo Lee bites the bullet, Johnathan feels like a baby, Zach is SO humble, Carlos uses the force, and Ashley tells the family business. Leaning in (and leaning over) to 2020, you might be examining your relationships and grappling with people who are toxic in your life. The blurring edges between social media and real life don't make that a walk in the park. As the conversation about "cancel culture" heats up, is it okay to cut those people from your life? The Core Four dive pretty deep talking about their own experiences in dealing with toxic people. Sometimes, that's looked like letting go of people associated with toxic memories. Family members, partners, friends-with-benefits, and acquaintances can all be toxic influences in your life. They're not easy to deal with in an ongoing basis. Letting go of those people can be just as difficult. What if you are the person who needs to be dealt with? Relationships are hard. Acclimatizing to workplace culture can already be a tricky thing to navigate. That's especially true in corporate culture. The whole crew attended an LGBTQIA+ event that Zach put together. The panel brought folks together sharing different experiences as far as their ability to self express at work. This had us thinking about what it's like being QTPOC at corporate gigs. "Tone it down." "Everything doesn't have to be about sexuality." Binarist dress codes. These are just a few of the ways that we can be limited in the workplace. Where do these rules and microaggressions come from? What's possible when we can stop worrying about whether that nail polish is appropriate for work? What can happen when we can truly WERQ the workplace? GROW THE COMMUNITY If you believe in the work we are doing, invest in our success, become a Patron on Patreon! Thank you to all our Patrons. As Halloween month continues, the crew is ready to explore their freaky sides. Sex can be a scary conversation for some, especially for queer and trans people of color. There can be shame attached to our experiences. Sometimes, we don't have all the information. Messaging we receive as young people has consequences. Spooky Season continues as we delve into the seasonal traditions of just some of our QPOC ancestral worship. We're flying without Carlos and Zach this week, but Johnathan and Jojo bring the dynamics and the duo. Johnathan talk about win-wins and Jo Lee makes the face melt. We cover a lot in this episode. Kingdom Hearts 3 is being released, new works by POC to celebrate, Kamala Harris is running for POTUS, and you're never too young to wear MAGA hats. We also breakdown a discussion between Mo'Nique and Whoopi Goldberg. As QPOC, do we have a responsibility to pave the way for those coming behind us? Chime in with your thoughts on social media! 2019 is off to a blazing start and leaving us gagged. You know we had to talk about the Commander in McChief serving McDonald's at the White House. (Does that make it the White Castle?) This leads us into a discussion about wealth, decadence, and spending. Johnathan goes super-saiyan, Zach tucks for the first time, Jo Lee gets into them coins, and Carlos gets physical. We also get our first listener mail and it's a lot to unpack getting us into a discussion about tolerance and identity politics. Wicked casts the first black woman to play Glinda. Her name is Brittney Johnson. Know her. We discuss the tone-deafness of Ellen's forgiveness of Kevin Hart. The border wall wins Bloop of the Week. We're here and queer in two-thousand-reclaiming-what's-mine-teen! Jo Lee becomes official, Carlos reverses the holiday diet curse, Zach's ready for a weave, and Johnathan gets bandersnatch'd. In many Latinx communities, the Christmas holiday continues through Three Kings' Day. In our effort to fight the colonizers, we decided to call it Three Kweenz Day celebrate three sets of queens. The first, your hosts. The second, the cast of All Stars Season 4. And third, we honor and give thanks for the life of the Grandfather of Ballroom and Pioneer, Hector Xtravaganza. 2018 left us feeling dazed and confused. Hoodwinked. Run amok. So, let's kiki and have some laughs. Johnathan makes off like a bandit, Jo Lee has bestie time, Carlos is a skinny legend with a tan, and Zach knows a seven word chorus. We discuss some QPOC victories in nominations for the Golden Globes and Grammys, what 2018 taught us, and Bloop of the Week goes to Kevin Hart.
