Hair discrimination disproportionately targets Black women, and lawmakers have sought to ban the practice with the CROWN Act. CROWN stands for “Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair,” and the first act of its kind was passed in California in 2019. Since then, other states and municipalities have adopted their own measures, including the City of St. Louis in 2021. A statewide measure took effect in Illinois in 2023. In July, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed a law banning race-based hair discrimination in the state. In this encore presentation from 2023, Vice President of the St. Louis chapter of NABJ Gabrielle Hays and Frizzy by Nature CEO Leslie Hughes talk about local and statewide efforts to pass the CROWN Act and ways Black women are relearning how to embrace their curls.

Send us a textIn 2020, then nurse practitioner, Shaina Rainford got seriously ill from COVID. She survived the illness, but lost all her hair and found nothing on store shelves that could help with her condition. Then, she remembered that her younger sister went through something similar – not COVID – five years prior, and their mother had made a concoction that helped little sister to grow her 4C Hair to waist length. Shaina tried the hair oil on her own hair, documented her journey on social media and Bask and Lather was born. The story is about more than creating a hair care brand. It's also the story of how one woman's go-getter spirit moved her into the next level of her professional journey. It's also a story about centering community and building a legacy. Here are some key discussions from my conversation with Shaina Rainford: • Bask and Lather launced in December 2020, and within three months, the company was generating the same amount as Shaina's annual nursing salary• The business focuses on natural ingredients with no fragrances, using essential oils that each serve a purpose • Shaina maintains 100% ownership of her company with zero debt and manufactures millions of units annually • Her 17-year-old son now leads the marketing efforts, creating a true legacy family business • Baskin-Lather holds top-seller positions on TikTok Shop for multiple hair care categories • The brand maintains direct-to-consumer focus to control distribution and maintain healthy profit margins • Their community-centered approach prioritizes authentic engagement with customers both online and offlineSupport the showNEWSLETTER, stay in the loop and subscribe to our newsletterSUPPORT this work so that we can keep it free. Throughout her life, Nickie had faced challenges in her own haircare journey. When she hit her breaking point, she decided to transition to natural hair, which came with its own set of difficulties, like chemical-filled products. In 2014, Nickie decided to start crafting her own formulas that she could trust. When she reached results that she felt confident in and that worked on her own hair, Nickie launched Curls Dynasty. A line of premium, chemical-free, curl products. Nickie was born and raised in Haiti but moved to Florida when she was 13 years old. Her Haitian culture and relationships with her family there are a big part of her story. From a young age, Nickie's mother taught her how to fight for what you want and how to be disciplined. Nickie's personal experience with hair relaxers is what ultimately led her to embrace her natural curls. Patterns of chemical scalp burns and peeling were her breaking point, and Nickie knew that other women were facing the same issues. When Nickie started making products in her kitchen, other women expressed interest, which led her to selling her products in retail stores like Target and Walmart. Curls Dynasty uses only organic and natural ingredients in their products and allows users to target their specific frustrations with their line of cleansers, conditioners, masques, and more. We're kicking off the second season of the Curl Code by sharing a vulnerable, illuminating, sometimes hilarious and alwways incredible conversation from the launch party of the show last year. This live event brought together curlies and non-curlies of different generations and backgrounds to discuss lived experiences of having curly hair. Regardless of what else we might not have in common, we discovered funny and not-so-funny stories of hair trauma, struggle, and finally, embrace that revealed to us the things we share, and helped us learn about what's changed--and still needs to change--to allow all of us to live as our most authentic selves and embrace our curly crowns. Our non-curly allies helped us understand their own experiences and limitations, and even our wavy and swavy friends got a little reassurance that there is a place for them in the the curl universe too! This conversation exemplifies the openness, authenticity and healing we stand for in this show, and at the Curly Oasis salon and education platform. We hope you'll find solidarity, companionship, and discovery in this show, and realize that whatever you hair trauma or curl experience may be, you are not alone! Web: https://richualist.com Follow: @dawndoesthemost @getritualist About Dawn Myers: Dawn lives to inspire entrepreneurs to walk in their purpose and build out their visions. Dawn leverages her product development, fundraising, and brand building experience to help early-stage founders achieve liftoff. Named one of Washington, D.C.'s Tech Titans by the Washingtonian and one of Washington's top 21 founders to watch by The Washington Business Journal, Dawn has negotiated partnerships with and secured funding from the world's top manufacturers including Dow, Proctor and Gamble, Sephora, and Glossier for her patented technologies in the hair and personal care space. Dawn is a startup eco-system architect, having launched and managed educational programming for entrepreneurs throughout the Washington metropolitan area. As former Director to Black Girl Ventures and Director at The Vinetta Project, a national 501(c)(3), Dawn has developed seminars, bootcamps, and accelerator programming for up and coming founders of color. Having been featured in Washington Business Journal, Essence, Black Enterprise, In Style, Teen Vogue, and Refinery 29, Dawn teaches founders how to lay a sound foundation, build the relationships they need to thrive, and access capital using non-traditional strategies From the Founder: Back in the day, it was completely socially unacceptable for little Black girls to wear their natural hair in public. Years later as a young law student, I would finally cut off my processed, relaxed, damaged straightened hair and embrace my natural texture. It was life changing. I felt beautiful in my own skin for the first time in my life. I want to make it easy for all women of color to feel that same feeling, but styling highly textured hair is complicated, time consuming, and deeply inconvenient for many consumers. In fact, many consumers in this niche spend upwards of 3 hours on styling each time they wash. We have engineered new tech for textured hair to make styling faster, easier, and more convenient. I want all women to be able to work out, travel, and manage our families and careers without having to sacrifice basic hygiene or confidence in our appearance. Meet The Mint by Richualist, a thermal infuser and styler that brings your wash day into the 21st century. Our all-in-one hair styling system detangles, conditions creams and gels, applies product, and styles with just one stroke. Get ready to save time and see healthy hair gains with The Mint. ► Luxury Women Handbag Discounts: https://www.theofficialathena.... ► Become an Equus Coach®: https://equuscoach.com/?rfsn=7... ► For $5 in ride credit, download the Lyft app using my referral link: https://www.lyft.com/ici/ASH58... ► Review Us: https://itunes.apple.com/us/po... ► Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/c/AshSa... ► Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/1lov... ► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ashsa... ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/1loveAsh ► Blog: http://www.ashsaidit.com/blog #atlanta #ashsaidit #theashsaiditshow #ashblogsit #ashsaidit®Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-ash-said-it-show--1213325/support.

In the latest episode of Elephant's long-running, award-winning podcast and video series Walk the Talk Show with Waylon Lewis, Waylon features Shelia, Sylvia, & Melissa Burlock, authors of My Divine Natural Hair, Inspiration & Tips to love & care for your Crown—about African-descent women's hair, wearing it naturally, celebrating your God-given inherent beauty and learning both practical healthy tips and the history of black women's hair. "We want Black woman to love our hair and the texture of our hair just as much as that wig or that extension, or to love how your hair grows out of your scalp just as much as you would love it when it's permed or straightened. We really want to encourage Black women and girls to start from that place of loving the way your hair grows out of your scalp, and then letting that dictate the different ways that you style your hair." ~ Melissa Burlock Read an excerpt from their book on Elephant Journal: My Divine Natural Hair. ~ Shelia, Sylvia, and Melissa Burlock *This is a partial conversation. Texas is one of the 24 states that has passed the CROWN Act. “CROWN” stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, and these laws are supposed to stop discrimination against Black people who wear their hair in natural styles. But high school senior Darryl George has been fighting suspension for months over his dreadlocks. The issue is now set to be decided in court in February. On today's episode of A Word, Jason Johnson is joined by Jennifer Wyatt Bourgeois, a professor at Lone Star College in Texas, and a research fellow at Texas Southern University's Center for Justice Research. They discuss the specifics of Darryl George's case, and why the CROWN Act in Texas seems to be falling short. Enough is enough. Outside of Dallas, the Barbers Hill School District has suspended a brilliant young man named Darry George, for week after week, because they say his beautiful natural hair style violates school rules.
