Humor Me (2017) In lieu of Menashe, we watched a relatively light-hearted comedy about a divorced, middle-aged playwright, played by Jemaine Clement, who moves in with his elderly father (played by Elliott Gould) when he's down on his luck. Written and directed by Sam Hoffman, this film meditates on grief over unrealized promise and unsatsifying family relationships. In subject matter, it takes its cues from Wes Anderson in films like The Royal Tenenbaums, but subs in homages to Jewish jokes of old for Anderson's dry humor (not surprising, given that Hoffman created the "Old Jews Telling Jokes" series - which I hadn't quite put together when we recorded). We liked it! Sort of. Next Time and Thank You Next time, we'll watch Operation Finale (2018) directed by Chris Weitz and starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley; it's the latest film to tackle the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina by Mossad agents in 1960. Thank you as always to the Klezmer Rebs for letting us play their music as our intro and outro; check out their website and bandcamp pages!

Peter Gethers' mother - 93 year old Judy Gethers - always understood the importance - and interconnectedness - of food and family. Her father owned the legendary Jewish kosher dairy restaurant Ratner’s on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She discovered a passion for gourmet cooking when she was in her 50s, taking her first job, in the kitchen of the ground-breaking Los Angeles restaurant Ma Maison, when she was 53. She became a mentor and friend to some of the most famous chefs in America, including Wolfgang Puck, Nancy Silverton, and Jonathan Waxman, and eventually ran the Ma Cuisine cooking school, teaching alongside Julia Child among many others. Learning to cook changed her life—and the lives of those around her—and she created her own legendary status in the food world. As her health eventually began to fail, her taste remained, as did her sense of humor and her determination to live life on her own terms. In her 80s, she was robbed of her ability to cook by a debilitating stroke. But her love of food remained, helping her to recover and bringing her closer than ever to her son. At least twice a week, Peter visits her so he can make her dinner, ask questions about her colorful past, and learn her kitchen secrets. Peter decides to learn how to cook his mother the meal of her dreams and thereby tell the story of her life to all those who have loved her. MY MOTHER’S KITCHEN is generously seasoned with Peter’s trademark wit and knowing eye. The book includes a selection of recipes ranging from Ratner’s Matzo Brei, to Tarte Tatin, and from a loaf of challah to salmon coulibiac, as well as family photos. Peter Gethers has written an unforgettable memoir about how food and family can do much more than feed us—they can nourish our souls. About the author: Peter Gethers is an author, screenwriter, playwright, book editor, and film and television producer. His previous eleven books include The Cat Who Went to Paris, the first in a bestselling trilogy about his extraordinary cat, Norton. He is also the co-creator and co-producer of the hit off-Broadway play Old Jews Telling Jokes. He lives in New York City, Sag Harbor, New York and, when possible, Gangivecchio, Sicily.

Dan Okrent, co-creator of "Old Jews Telling Jokes Onstage," talks somewhat seriously about the comedic off-Broadway production, or as he refers to it, his first project "specifically designed to make people happy." Episode 0030 June 26, 2012 Yiddish Book Center Amherst, Massachusetts
This week, Aaron Herman had the opportunity to talk to Sam Hoffman, the Producer and Creator of Old Jews Telling Jokes. Old Jews Telling Jokes was born in an empty storefront in Highland Park, New Jersey in the summer of 2008. Eric Spiegelman and Tim Williams of Jetpack Media had asked Sam if I had any ideas for an internet show and it was suggested: “how about we shoot my father and his friends telling jokes?” Surprisingly, they agreed. The rules would be simple. Every joke teller had to be at least sixty years old and “Jewish.” The age thing I would be strict about, the Jewish thing would be in spirit. If nothing else, we would make portraits of people who had lived at least six decades and that would be something to see. And from there… History

In the beginning, there were just old Jews telling jokes—you know, Uncle Buddy down in Boca or grandpa’s bawdy second wife Hettie. Then, in 2008, filmmaker Sam Hoffman had the idea of filming some of his favorite old Jews telling jokes. He created a website and posted a series of “Old Jews Telling Jokes” videos that soon attracted a devoted following. The most popular jokes (such as this one, about giving directions) have been viewed well over a million times. Now, at the initiative of Daniel Okrent—the first public editor for the New York Times—and writer and editor Peter Gethers, Old Jews Telling Jokes has been re-purposed as a theatrical production, complete with a narrative through-line and cabaret-style musical numbers. Currently in previews, it opens May 20 at the Westside Theater in... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
