John welcomes writer, director and playwright Leslye Headland (The Acolyte, Russian Doll) to ask, why are stage plays so challenging for screenwriters? Using her recent Broadway play Cult of Love, they look at different approaches to scene description, heightened and simultaneous dialogue, and strategies for adapting stage plays to film. We also chart Leslye's career from theater kid to auteur filmmaker, her approach to time loops (because how could we not?), and answer listener questions about music cues and long scripts. In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Leslye compare notes on how to keep up with what's on stage, and what to do if you missed a production. Star Wars: The Acolyte was an unmitigated disaster for Disney and Lucasfilm, and the show was canceled almost immediately after its debut. Now one of its stars, Lee Jung-Jae, has said that his feelings were hurt by the backlash, which he claims was racist. “My feelings were hurt. Especially for Leslye Headland—her feelings must have hurt a lot….I can only have faith that racism will end someday…even though it's going to be hard”

We may not have all the answers, but we do have a lot of thoughts about Hollywood, about Billy Ray Cyrus, about actors being shoved down audiences' throats, about diners, about Patrick Fischler's eyebrows, about the diner owned by Patrick Fischler's dad, about Naomi Watts' friendship with Nicole Kidman, about Corky Romano…the list goes on. Leslye Headland created her own version of The Acolyte which didn't do very well overall, causing Disney to choose not to make a season 2 after it received the lowest finale views of any Disney Star Wars show. Even Plagueis and Yoda couldn't boost the show...Sadly. However... I believe if we got a show on Darth Zannah and Darth Bane, THE REAL ACOLYTE - fans would have wanted many more seasons. The Disney+ series The Acolyte continues the saga of the Star Wars universe with a crime thriller. A former Jedi Padawan, Osha, reunites with her Jedi Master, Sol, to investigate a murder spree against their fellow Jedis. They uncover secrets from Osha's past and must fight the dark sides of the Force. Cinematographer Chris Teague has crafted stunning visuals for a variety of projects, from indie dramas like Obvious Child to critically acclaimed series like Russian Doll, GLOW, and Only Murders in the Building. He feels his style is constantly evolving. For the Star Wars series The Acolyte, Chris worked with saturated colors and key lighting, as though the illumination in many scenes was from a single source. He wanted to immerse viewers in the world of the series, without calling attention to the cinematography. When approaching a project, Chris delves into the script and references, often discovering new insights along the way. “As you're reading a script, as you're looking at references, you have these little epiphanies, these little discoveries, but they're always sort of partial discoveries,” Chris says. “And then hopefully, they evolve into something that's specific to the project itself. The joy of filmmaking is to collaborate and combine all the creativity into something that feels cohesive.” He believes that these discoveries gradually evolve into a style specific to the project. As the lead DP, Chris established the look of the show over 6 months of prep. He split the episodes with fellow cinematographer James Friend, and they tested cameras and lenses together. Friend's episodes took place in different locations so he was able to establish his own look for his episodes. For The Acolyte, Chris worked closely with the production designer to create sets that were both practical and visually stunning, with multiple angles for the camera to explore. He and showrunner/director Leslye Headland also embraced the challenge of shooting in real locations, selling the scale of the Star Wars universe without relying heavily on blue screen. They did not use a volume stage at all, wanting it to look as close to what director George Lucas would do, with a visual style that was powerful but not overbearing. Several of the scenes in episodes four and five were filmed on location in Madeira, an island off the coast of Africa. Madeira offered lots of wild beauty, with incredible views from craggy bluffs. They did face some weather challenges while shooting there, with sweeps of fog and cloud that rolled into a full whiteout at times. Beyond the visuals, Chris also focused on capturing the intricate stunt choreography and fight sequences in a way that would keep the audience engaged. His attention to detail ensured that these action-packed moments felt both exciting and integral to the storytelling. As a Star Wars fan, Chris was excited to be involved in The Acolyte. He says of the experience, “I can't believe I'm in this room right now watching this happen. It really feels like you're part of this creative process that people are going to fall in love with.” Find Chris Teague: http://www.teaguefilmworks.com/home Instagram: @_christeague Listen to our previous interview with Chris Teague on Only Murders in the Building. https://www.camnoir.com/ep174/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras www.hotrodcameras.com The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

Trending with Timmerie - Catholic Principals applied to today's experiences.
Hey there, fellow Star Wars fan! Are you feeling a bit let down by the latest Star Wars series? You're not alone, for sure. Fr. Tim Grumbach recently shared some thoughts on why "Star Wars Acolyte" just doesn't hit the mark, especially when looking through a Catholic lens. Lost Morality: Fr. Tim pointed out how the new series muddles the once-clear distinction between good and evil. Remember when the Jedi were the heroes and the Sith were the villains? Now, "Star Wars Acolyte" makes the Sith seem misunderstood, blurring the lines between right and wrong. This can be really confusing, especially when our faith teaches us to clearly distinguish good from evil. Destruction of Fatherhood: Another messed up aspect Fr. Tim discussed is how the show portrays fatherhood. It features a daughter killing her father to gain personal freedom, which Leslye Headland, the show's creator, calls “liberation.” So sad. This is a far cry from the redemptive father-son relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, which reminded us of forgiveness and the possibility of redemption—central themes in Christianity. Can't we just go back to that? Over-Sexualization: "Star Wars Acolyte" has been criticized for its overt sexual themes. The creator's background as Harvey Weinstein's assistant might have influenced this aspect, promoting a narrative that lacks the innocence and adventurous spirit of the original series. Agenda-Driven Content: Both Timmerie and Fr. Tim lament how modern Star Wars content, especially under Disney, feels agenda-driven. Instead of focusing on storytelling, it seems to push specific ideologies, which takes away from the universal themes of heroism, sacrifice, and virtue that once made Star Wars great. This shift is reflected in the poor reception of the series, despite its huge budget. You'd expect nothing less from Disney, right? Lack of Redemptive Arcs: The classic Star Wars stories are beloved for their redemptive arcs. Fr. Tim emphasizes how characters like Darth Vader showed the power of conversion and redemption. "Star Wars Acolyte," however, seems to celebrate the triumph of evil without any hope for redemption, leaving you with a sense of hopelessness and despair. Don't you just miss the old Star Wars? The series strays far from the values that made it a cultural and moral beacon. As Catholics, there's a longing for stories that inspire, redeem, and uplift. Here's hoping future Star Wars ventures return to the path of light, bringing back the hope and heroism that once defined the galaxy far, far away.

There's something very suspicious about this "Assume That I Can" video going around. Are predators using Special Needs as a stepping stone to preying on kids? Also, Nicki Minaj wrecks songs, j-Lo is not from the block, The Gentlemen looks good, and did Star Wars' Leslye Headland get turned out by Harvey Weinstein?
