We begin our third season of adventures! Here we learn about the historical originas of the "Tryout Town" in American showbiz of the early 20th Century. We discuss the movie 42nd Street and discuss many touring shows that came through Philly on their way to and from Broadway - including George M. Cohan's Little Johnny Jones, which introduced the song "Give My Regards To Broadway" at the Walnut Street Theatre in 1904. But we also learn that the real place that Philadelphians needed to travel, in order to catch tryout shows, was not the theaters of Broad Street but along the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey while they took their summer vacations!A blog post about the excursions and theaters in Atlantic City can be found on our website: https://www.aithpodcast.com/blog/but-i-dont-want-to-go-to-philadelphia-theaters-of-atlantic-city/For a free online viewing of the film 42nd Street - including the scene we reference in the podcast which comes about 40 minutes in, go to this version on the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/42ndstreet1933_201908/42nd_Street_1080.mp4If you liked the show, leave a Review on Apple Podcasts! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/adventures-in-theater-history-philadelphia/id1562046673Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AITHpodcastFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aithpodcast/Our website: https://www.aithpodcast.com/To become a supporter the show, go to: AITHpodcast@patreon.com© Podcast text copyright, Peter Schmitz. We begin the harrowing and alarming story of "The Clansman," in Philadelphia. Although this play by the author Thomas W. Dixon is know as the progenitor to the 1915 D.W. Griffith film "Birth of the Nation," few are aware of its early controversial history,The narrative begins in the streets outside the Walnut Street Theatre, as a large crowd of the city's Black citizens have gathered to protest the performance, and to demand that it be stopped.(Please note: in all descriptions of Philadelphia's Walnut St. Theatre in the year 1906 - there is NO connection to the current management of the Walnut Street Theatre or the producers or organization of the modern company. All the events described in this episode took place long ago, in a different era, and should not be construed to represent the views of the present management of the building as it stands today.)To se a blog post about the events in this episode, follow this link to our podcast's web page: https://www.aithpodcast.com/blog/3000-negroes-riot/If you enjoyed the show, PLEASE LEAVE US A REVIEW! THE WIZ COMPOSER: Charlie Smalls LYRICIST: Charlie Smalls BOOK: William F. Brown SOURCE: L. Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) DIRECTOR: Geoffrey Holder CHOREOGRAPHER: George Faison PRINCIPLE CAST: Andre DeShields (The Wiz), Mabel King (Evillene), Stephanie Mills (Dorothy), OPENING DATE: Jan 5, 1975 CLOSING DATE: Jan 28, 1979 PERFORMANCES: 1,672 SYNOPSIS: During a violent tornado, Dorothy is transported from Kansas to the magical land of Oz. In order to go back home she must first speak with The Wiz. Accompanied by her friends The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion, Dorothy begins an adventure down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wiz. Accessing the universal themes in L Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz retold the classic story through a contemporary African-American lens. The show proved the potential for success in big-budget, fantasy stories with all Black casts. Jerrell L. Henderson traces the modes in which Black creatives and audiences were relegated to segregated theatres, how Black performers were cast in shows written by white individuals, and how marketing of musicals became focused on Black communities in relation to The Wiz. Jerrell L. Henderson is a Director and Puppeteer. Upcoming Puppet Short Films include, Hamlin: La Revue Sombre with Handmade Puppet Dreams and Diamond's Dream with Chicago Children's Theatre. He performed his signature puppetry piece, I Am The Bear, this fall with Chicago International Puppet Festival's Living Room Tours. His shadow play, 3 American Myths: A Riff in Shadow & Light in 3 Rhythmic Movements was a finalist for a 2019 Jim Henson Foundation Grant. Recent directing credits include Mlima's Tale with Griffin Theatre (Jeff Award Nomination for Direction and Best Play) and Thurgood with Walnut Street Theatre. Other credits include The River with BoHo Theatre, Untitled with Inis Nua (Barrymore Award nomination for Outstanding Direction of a Play) and Something Like A War: A New Musical with 11th Hour Theatre. Fanny Kemble and her father Charles Kemble, representatives of the most famous English theatrical family of their day, appeared at both the Chestnut Street Theatre and Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia in the early 1830s, during their tour of America. Though Charles was a star himself, it was the beautiful and vivacious Fanny that audiences really came to see. Her performances would help to change the role of women on the American stage, and her stay in Philadelphia would have a transformative effect on her own life story, as well. For images and additional commentary about this topic,(and a bibliography) see our website's blog post! www.https://www.aithpodcast.com/blog/episode-16-Fanny-Kemble-Part-One-blog-post/We post daily stories from all periods of Philadelphia Theater History on our Facebook page and our Twitter feed. Historically Speaking-Uncommon History with an Unconventional Pair
Shakespeare's Macbeth is a fascinating figure- resourceful, brave, insightful, reflective, but it's his inordinate ambition that leads to his downfall. Can the same be said of Scotland's real Macbeth? Here in Episode 29, we unpack the characters in Shakespeare's play Macbeth alongside their historical (or mythical) counterparts including Banquo, Malcolm, McDuff, even the witches. We also let you in on a few theatre traditions involving “The Scottish Play” as well as why you can never say the word Macbeth in a theatre. Episode Notes:The word Bard means poet and because William Shakespeare was from the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, he was known as the Bard of Avon. Even though the title was never officially bestowed, in 1769 the Shakespearean actor David Garrick is credited with organizing the Shakespeare Jubilee for which he wrote a song referring to Shakespeare as the Warwickshire Bard which seems to have eventually morphed into The Bard of Avon. Here is a link to Garrick's original song, https://www.bartleby.com/333/77.htmlSir Laurence Olivier played the title role in Macbeth at the Old Vic Theatre in London in 1937.Books:Macbeth by William ShakespeareHolinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland by Raphael HolinshedScotland: The Story of a Nation by Magnus MagnussonThe Reign of Elizabeth 1556-1603 by J.B. During a global pandemic where theaters across the country are dark, it was nice to have a discussion about the good old days of sitting in an audience watching a live performance!About See Amid the Winter Snow:“YULETIDE PANDEMONIUM!" On the outskirts of the North Pole, a bustling little city home to a world-famous toy factory, a spunky Snowman narrates the love story of an ambitious schoolteacher and the Claus family publicist, whose simple romance is threatened when they find themselves living the Christmastime nightmare of a blackmail scandal in Santa’s Workshop during Mrs. Claus’ bid for Mayor of the North Pole. Follow Peter Fenton’s satirical romp through holiday lore and United States politics in a hilarious blizzard laced with the piercing wit of the 21st Century and the timeless heart of the season. Bet you an ice cream sundae you can’t find these homages to all-time holiday favorites in this play:-It’s a Wonderful Life-A Christmas Story-How the Grinch Stole Christmas-Miracle on 34th Street-Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer-“Baby, it’s Cold Outside”-“The Twelve Days of Christmas”-“We Wish You a Merry Christmas”-“Up On the Housetop”-“Walking in a Winter Wonderland”..and SO MANY MORE!”About Peter Fenton:Peter Fenton (he/him) is a Philadelphia area comedian, playwright, and screenwriter specializing in writing works to make you both laugh and drive you to be a better person in a variety of genres spanning family-friendly fairy tale adventures to mature-humored dark comedic commentaries on religion. Alan is highly regarded for his vital, re-imagined versions of classic plays and musicals. His work tends to mine the present-day relevance of a story, challenging people’s memories and expectations, so that they hear and experience the words and ideas anew. His style invites audiences to lean forward and participate rather than just observe, breaking down boundaries between audience and actors, encouraging hearts to flutter and conversation to ensue. His 10-person Oliver! was solicited by Stage Entertainment and had its inaugural production at the Human Race Theatre Company, with choreography by Spencer Liff. He worked in conjunction with the Lerner Estate on his post-modern and highly celebrated Camelot for the Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago, where he also mounted a provocative, madcap, Vegas-themed Joseph…Dreamcoat and a rather progressive and highly stylized take on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.Alan has directed plays and musicals for Laguna Playhouse, Olney Theatre, Arkansas Repertory, Walnut Street Theatre, The New Theatre, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Virginia Musical Theatre, 3D Theatricals, Texas Shakespeare Festival, and the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport, among others. He has also directed many world-premieres, including The Little Hours (based on the short stories of Dorothy Parker), Exposure Time, and Multiple Family Dwelling for NJ Repertory, Mourning the Living at the Abingdon Theatre in NYC, and Death Valley: A Love Story for the Springfield Contemporary Theatre. He has been nominated for both the Joseph Jefferson Award and Carbonell Award, has received multiple Edgerton Foundation Grants for New Works, and has had his work recorded for the National Theatre Archive.Alan has directed original benefit performances on Broadway, for both the Actors Fund of America and the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Tonight we meet the show cast for the very popular stage show 'The Diary of Black Men- How do you love a Black Woman. Russell Andrews (Director) Russell’s journey with The Diary of Black Men began in 1986 when after two very well-received performances, at Houston’s Ensemble Theatre, an opportunity came to cover a character in The Diary at Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre. After that single performance Mr. Andrews was asked to be the sole understudy for all 6 male characters as well as the assistant to the director and technical staff. With The Diary’s phenomenal success, Russell spent the next two years covering all of the 6 roles, while continuing to drive “the van” across the country several times, ironing the costumes, moving the props and carrying the luggage for the cast. The opportunity to take a permanent role in the play came at the famed Town Hall Theatre in New York City where, while keeping his position as technical assistant, he took over the role of ‘The Intellectual’ and never looked back. http://www.diaryofblackmen.com https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Diary-of-Black-Men-How-Do-You-Love-A-Black-Woman/129017420475662 Call in to speak to the Directors and Actors 3479457556 Follow Ebony https://twitter.com/morebeingyou
