Sam Hoffman, although only a few years older than 52-year-old host Joel Waldman, has somehow managed to have a five-decade long career as a producer, director and writer who has created content in fil
Humor Me (2017) In lieu of Menashe, we watched a relatively light-hearted comedy about a divorced, middle-aged playwright, played by Jemaine Clement, who moves in with his elderly father (played by Elliott Gould) when he's down on his luck. Written and directed by Sam Hoffman, this film meditates on grief over unrealized promise and unsatsifying family relationships. In subject matter, it takes its cues from Wes Anderson in films like The Royal Tenenbaums, but subs in homages to Jewish jokes of old for Anderson's dry humor (not surprising, given that Hoffman created the "Old Jews Telling Jokes" series - which I hadn't quite put together when we recorded). We liked it! Sort of. Next Time and Thank You Next time, we'll watch Operation Finale (2018) directed by Chris Weitz and starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley; it's the latest film to tackle the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina by Mossad agents in 1960. Thank you as always to the Klezmer Rebs for letting us play their music as our intro and outro; check out their website and bandcamp pages!

This week, Aaron Herman had the opportunity to talk to Sam Hoffman, the Producer and Creator of Old Jews Telling Jokes. Old Jews Telling Jokes was born in an empty storefront in Highland Park, New Jersey in the summer of 2008. Eric Spiegelman and Tim Williams of Jetpack Media had asked Sam if I had any ideas for an internet show and it was suggested: “how about we shoot my father and his friends telling jokes?” Surprisingly, they agreed. The rules would be simple. Every joke teller had to be at least sixty years old and “Jewish.” The age thing I would be strict about, the Jewish thing would be in spirit. If nothing else, we would make portraits of people who had lived at least six decades and that would be something to see. And from there… History

In the beginning, there were just old Jews telling jokes—you know, Uncle Buddy down in Boca or grandpa’s bawdy second wife Hettie. Then, in 2008, filmmaker Sam Hoffman had the idea of filming some of his favorite old Jews telling jokes. He created a website and posted a series of “Old Jews Telling Jokes” videos that soon attracted a devoted following. The most popular jokes (such as this one, about giving directions) have been viewed well over a million times. Now, at the initiative of Daniel Okrent—the first public editor for the New York Times—and writer and editor Peter Gethers, Old Jews Telling Jokes has been re-purposed as a theatrical production, complete with a narrative through-line and cabaret-style musical numbers. Currently in previews, it opens May 20 at the Westside Theater in... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
