Mike White is joined by Mike Sullivan and Emily Intravia to take a long-overdue look at Move (1970), the surreal, seldom-seen New York comedy directed by Stuart Rosenberg. Fresh off his success in MASH Elliott Gould stars as Hiram Jaffe, a would-be playwright stuck writing porn and walking dogs while waiting for the movers who never arrive. As his mundane reality refuses to budge, Hiram plunges into a chaotic interior world filled with absurd fantasies, sexual misadventures, and psychological spirals.Adapted from Joel Lieber's novel (and screenplay), Move attempts to blend urban anxiety, dream logic, and dark comedy—resulting in a disjointed but oddly fascinating time capsule of early '70s male neurosis. Paula Prentiss co-stars as Hiram's patient wife, while Geneviève Waïte plays a mysterious blonde who may or may not exist. The film mixes scenes of everyday tedium with dreamlike sequences involving rogue movers, hallucinated frogs, and even a fantasy duel, never quite committing to whether it's satirizing New York life or the fragile male ego.Our hosts dive into the film's tonal shifts, its place in Gould's post-MASH career arc, and why it remains overlooked despite its stacked cast and studio pedigree. The episode also features brand-new interviews with stars Elliott Gould and Paula Prentiss, who reflect on the film's production, reception, and what it means to them in hindsight.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

It's the end of our eighth season of the podcast and so we're celebrating by going all the back to the season finale of the very first season (well, if you don't count those summer episodes as being part of the season). Anyway, our ol' pal Jon Schneider is back with us again to discuss Elliott Gould's second hosting gig and what be the first of many for musical guest Leon Redbone. This episode is mostly known for Micheal O'Donoghue's lengthy Star Trek sketch and generally not much else and truth to be told, I had vague memories of it just kinda being a gassed out finale with a mini-epic tossed in the middle. But no! Turns out there's more here than meets the eye, including the first of the show's two moments of female nudity, Collins & Everson performing a song that would never be officially released, and a strange 1930s-ish theming to the whole thing. So join us as we close out our season the only way we know how: by talking WAY too long about vintage comedy. Who loves ya, baby?

The Chelsea Hotel sits at 222 West 23rd Street in Manhattan…since it was completed in 1884, the place has been a hangout for some very colourful characters…most were New York eccentrics and bohemians who needed a place to live…but it also attracted some famous people. At one point or another, it was home to sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke who wrote a big chunk of “2001: A Space Odyssey” in his room…later, Stanley Kubrick, the producer of the movie version of the book would stay there… Other long-term guests included photographer Robert Mapplethorpe stayed there…so did included beat writer Jack Kerouac, playwrights Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Sam Shepherd, actors Dennis Hopper, Uma Thurman, Elliott Gould, and Jane Fonda…plus, for extra colour, poets William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg—not to mention Andy Warhol and some of his crew. The Chelsea was also a favourite haunt of musicians…Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits, Jim Morrison, Jeff Beck, Joni Mitchell, Alice Cooper, the guys in Pink Floyd, and many, many others. But the most notorious floor was floor 1…it was designated the “junkie floor,” the place where guests with drug problems were placed so that staff could keep an eye on things… This was where ex-Sex Pistol Sid Vicious and his American girlfriend, Nancy Spungen checked in…they were given room 100. It was in that room Nancy died…it looks like she was murdered...but by whom? ...Sid was charged with killing her, but did he?. This is “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…and this time, it's the wild story of the death of Nancy Spungen and the questions that still remain decades later…around whether Sid Vicious actually did it. This week, every good team needs a greaseman, and boy do we have one, as we're putting a team together to knock down three Vegas casinos in one night, in a movie that is just as clever and funny as it is slick and stylish. It's 2001's Ocean's Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh, written by Ted Griffin, and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, Eddie Jemison, Shaobo Qin and Topher Grace. Soderbergh is clearly having a ball bringing this material to life with an all-star cast of capital-M capital-S Movie Stars, but the movie is more understated than its more dazzling sequels, and never loses sight of the human heart at its core that makes all the action matter in the first place. It's a beautiful film, visually and emotionally, and feels like the kind of adult-oriented entertainment that Hollywood seems hard-pressed to cook up these day. Plus: J Mo's been to theatre to see Soderbergh's first of two new entries in 2025, and is back with a theatrical field report on the POV ghost story Presence. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Ocean's Eleven is currently streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the United States. Dana and Tom with returning guest, Adam Vanderwerff, discuss M*A*S*H (1970): directed by Robert Altman, written by Ring Lardner, Jr., music by Johnny Mandel, starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, and Robert Duvall.Plot Summary: M*A*S*H is a sharp, irreverent satire that reimagines the war film as a chaotic and darkly comedic theater of absurdity. Set in a mobile army surgical hospital during the Korean War, the film follows the misadventures of surgeons Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and Trapper John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), whose antics clash with the rigid military hierarchy. The film's freewheeling ensemble style captures the camaraderie and anarchy of a unit forced to find humor amidst the horrors of war. With its anti-authoritarian ethos and whip-smart dialogue, the film critiques the machinery of war and conformity without sermonizing. The overlapping conversations, naturalistic performances, and subversive tone make M*A*S*H both a product of its era and a timeless commentary on the absurdities of human conflict.Guest:Adam Vanderwerff (Duncan Disability Law)Previous Episodes: Office Space (1999), Ghostbusters (1984)Chapters:00:00 Introduction to MASH and Its Legacy03:56 Relationship(s) with M*A*S*H08:02 What is M*A*S*H About?12:42 Cultural Impact of M*A*S*H18:57 Impact of First F-Bomb in Cinema History?21:09 Plot Summary for M*A*S*H22:22 Did You Know?24:51 First Break26:22 Best Performance(s)32:50 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)38:43 Second Break39:53 In Memoriam42:08 Best/Funniest Lines43:47 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy48:19 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance49:01 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty52:57 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness58:57 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:01:59 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:03:12 Remaining Questions for M*A*S*H01:10:45 Thank You to Our Guest and Final Thoughts01:15:42 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/m-a-s-h-1970-ft-adam-vanderwerffFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:MASH, film analysis, cultural impact, legacy, comedy, war film, character performances, podcast, movie review, Donald Sutherland, Robert Altman, Robert Duvall, Elliot Gould, Tom SkerittRonny Duncan Studios

What d'ya hear? What d'ya say?Welcome to our 9th Trilogies episode, Film Noir edition. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at The Dark Knight Trilogy from Christopher Nolan. We are getting the podcast back on track after a few weeks/months away. As it is November aka Noirvember, we thought we would have a Film Noir themed episode. This trilogies episode is a little different from the rest. We of course will be looking at three films, but we're making our own trilogy. The films we will discuss are not connected per se as in Film 1, 2 and 3. No, they stand alone films though they are connected by a single character. That character is Detective Philip Marlowe, a private investigator created by author Raymond Chandler. Along with Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain, Chandler was one of the great writers of pulp hard-boiled detective crime fiction. The films we will be discussing are some of our favourites. Murder My Sweet (1944) directed by Edward Dmytryk, The Big Sleep (1946) directed by Howard Hawks and The Long Goodbye (1973) directed by Robert Altman. Each film depicts Los Angeles in a different style, tone and, in Altman's case, time period. More importantly, they interpret Marlowe in their own unique way and as well as the source material. Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart and Elliott Gould all bring something different and new for their performances as Philip Marlowe. We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we also hope you enjoy this episode.Stay Tuned for more!Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws which is a available to watch in the US, Finland & the UK on Amazon and Apple TV for example. The film ambitiously sought to bring to life Operation Market-Garden, the bold but ultimately doomed Allied campaign of September 1944, culminating in the failed attempt to capture the Arnhem bridge. Producer Joseph E. Levine gathered an incredible ensemble cast, featuring legends like Anthony Hopkins, Robert Redford, Sean Connery, James Caan, Michael Caine, Elliott Gould, Dirk Bogarde, and Laurence Olivier. The movie was shot on location in Holland, with the town of Deventer doubling as Arnhem to recreate the intense and chaotic battle scenes. The film stars Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe and features Sterling Hayden, Nina Van Pallandt, Jim Bouton, Mark Rydell, and an early, uncredited appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The story's setting was moved from the 1940s to 1970s Hollywood. The film has been called "a study of a moral and decent man cast adrift in a selfish, self-obsessed society where lives can be thrown away without a backward glance ... and any notions of friendship and loyalty are meaningless."[2] In 2021, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. This week, I have some new recommendations, featuring a selection of neo-noir classics from the '70s and early '80s. These films capture the essence of the genre with their complex characters, intricate plots, and moody atmospheres. I grew up as a fan of original noir films that I would see on TV late shows and weekend film fests. So as I got older, my enjoyment of these made a lot of sense.First up is The Long Goodbye (1973), directed by Robert Altman. This film features Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe, a laid-back private detective navigating a world of mystery and betrayal in contemporary Los Angeles. Altman's unique take on Raymond Chandler's classic character adds a touch of humor and irreverence to the story. Pay attention to the film's soundtrack by John Williams, which cleverly reprises the same theme in various styles throughout the movie.Next, we have Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski. This film stars Jack Nicholson as private investigator Jake Gittes, who gets entangled in a web of corruption and deceit in 1930s Los Angeles. Faye Dunaway and John Huston deliver unforgettable performances. Keep an eye out for the film's meticulous attention to detail, from its period-accurate costumes to its stunning cinematography by John A. Alonzo. This might be the most famous film that has a nose-slashing in it.Moving on, I am recommending Night Moves (1975), directed by Arthur Penn. Gene Hackman stars as Harry Moseby, a former football player turned private investigator. As he searches for a runaway teenager, Moseby finds himself caught in a dark and twisted conspiracy. Hackman's performance, as you might expect, is a standout, and the film's ambiguous ending will leave you pondering long after the credits roll (Seventies!) Keep an eye out for a young Melanie Griffith in one of her earliest roles.Lastly, we have Cutter's Way (1981), directed by Ivan Passer. This film features Jeff Bridges as Richard Bone, who becomes involved in a murder investigation with his friend Alex Cutter, played by John Heard. The film paints a sad/confusing picture of post-Vietnam America and explores themes of disillusionment and betrayal. The chemistry between Bridges and Heard is electric, and Lisa Eichhorn delivers a heartbreaking performance as Cutter's wife, Mo.These films are essential viewing for any fan of the noir genre or films of the seventies. While they have a lot in common, they each also bring something unique to the table and showcase some of the best talent of their time, both in front of and behind the camera. Kicking off a new episode cycle about "Musicians on Film", Julian, Emilio and Madeline hop on a three-wheeled motorcycle and revisit a movie they've previously seen and admired: Robert Altman's 1975 epic 'Nashville', a five-day, criss-crossing journey through the country music capital.  The trio do their best to make sense of the many disparate things that take place in its unusual narrative, and discuss scenes and characters that have outsized importance in their own personal experiences watching the film.  They discuss at length the film's many musician/actors, the songs they sing (many they wrote themselves), and the respect to the work Altman demonstrates in showing most of these musical performances in full.  With three down and only two best picture nominees from 1975 left to discuss, might there be plans to discuss all of them before long?  DISCLAIMER: While they are current events related to our discussion of 'Nashville', the passing of actress Shelley Duvall and the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump are not discussed here because this conversation was recorded before either incident took place.  R.I.P. Ralph welcomes Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs to discuss what's motivating anti-Palestinian extremism in Israel, how the U.S. has been complicit in Israel's theft of Palestinian territory and genocide against the Palestinian people, and what the United Nations can do to help achieve a lasting peace. Plus, we share Ralph's recent column: "Israeli Leaders' Objective All Along Has Been the Expulsion of Occupied Palestinians and Seizure of Their Remaining Land."Jeffrrey Sachs is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he holds the rank of University Professor (the university's highest academic rank) and he served as Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University from 2002 to 2016. Mr. Sachs has also served in numerous positions at the United Nations, including as President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The reason that diplomacy is not happening is perfectly obvious. Which is that the core of this government does not want diplomacy, even if it were to deliver security. Their aim is not security through diplomacy. Their aim is “Greater Israel.”Jeffrey SachsI have lived through…watching the U.S. government abandon so many projects, from Southeast Asia through the Americas—these have been terrible projects often—but the U.S. loses interest, it moves on. And Israel needs to actually live in its neighborhood if it's going to survive. And counting on military might to do that is a profound mistake. It's eating away at its own fundamental capacity to act as a society—the idea that you can stand alone in the world community and have no one support you. This is a huge mistake. So I've tried to say to my counterparts in Israel…that this path is not only wrong and immoral, but doomed to fail as well.Jeffrey SachsThe Palestinians have one of the highest literacy rates—97 % — in the world. Under dire conditions, they have accomplished farmers, physicians, scientists, engineers, poets, musicians, novelists, artists, and a deep entrepreneurial tradition carried on by the Palestinian diaspora around the world. It is no accident that Israeli bombers directly target Palestinian cultural and educational institutions in their recurrent assaults on Gaza. Israeli militarists have to degrade all Palestinians… to expel them from their ancestral lands.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 4/10/241. An unsettling story in Business Insider recounts how the Israeli military uses an AI system – chillingly called “Where's Daddy?” – to track Hamas militants to their homes. As one IDF officer put it, “We[‘re] not interested in killing [Hamas] operatives only when they…[are] engaged in a military activity…On the contrary, the IDF bomb[s] them in homes without hesitation, as a first option. It's much easier to bomb a family's home.” This policy of bombing family homes “as a first option” is a major factor in why so many Palestinian families have lost unimaginable numbers of relatives in Israeli strikes. IDF officers added “human input in the target identification process…[is] essentially [to] ‘rubber stamp' the machine's picks after little more than ‘20 seconds' of consideration — which was largely to double-check the target is male.”2. As we know from the recent polling on the issue, only 22.5% of Democrats now support military aid to Israel, while 83% want a permanent ceasefire. More surprising is that only 41% of Republicans want  the U.S. to send military aid to Israel, and 58% want a permanent ceasefire. This poll is now joined by a similar poll from the United Kingdom, showing 56% of the British public – including 74% of Labour Party voters – support their government refusing to sell more weapons to Israel, with only 17% in support of continuing such sales. Pressing on this issue, progressive members of Congress Mark Pocan and Jan Schakowsky have penned a letter to President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken “strongly urg[ing them]…to reconsider [their] recent decision to authorize the transfer of a new arms package to Israel and to withhold this and any future offensive arms transfers until a full investigation into the [World Central Kitchen] airstrike is completed…to continue withholding these transfers until those responsible are held accountable [under U.S. or international law and]…to withhold these transfers if Israel fails to sufficiently mitigate harm to innocent civilians in Gaza, including aid workers, and if it fails to facilitate – or arbitrarily denies or restricts – the transport and delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.” This letter was signed by 37 additional Democratic members of Congress – mostly the typical progressives, though with one extremely notable addition: Nancy Pelosi, signifying how mainstream this position has become.3. In yet another sign of the shifting political winds, Delaware Senator Chris Coons – a consummate moderate and perhaps President Biden's closest ally in the Senate – has come out in favor of conditioning military aid to Israel, Axios reports. Coons added “I've never said that before, I've never been here before.”4. Yet even as the Democratic Party shifts., Biden has continued his blind support for Israel – resulting in continued success for the “Uncommitted” electoral protest movement. In Wisconsin, the “uninstructed delegation” option won nearly 50,000 votes statewide – over 8% of the vote – and over 30% of votes in the precincts representing the University of Wisconsin-Madison. And it hasn't stopped with Wisconsin. In Connecticut, “uncommitted” won over 11%; in New York, blank ballots accounted for 12%; and in Rhode Island, “uncommitted” won a whopping 14.5% of primary voters statewide. John Nichols at the Nation tabulates that as of now, over half a million Democratic primary voters have given Biden a clear message: “Save Gaza!”5. The controversy surrounding Oscar-winning Zone of Interest Director Jonathan Glazer's acceptance speech continues to drag on. This week, over 150 major Jewish creatives signed an open letter supporting Glazer, per Variety. These signatories include many household names, such as Joaquin Phoenix, Elliott Gould, Joel Coen, David Cross, Amy Berg, Boots Reilly, Hari Nef, Ilana Glzazer, Wallace Shawn, and many, many more. This letter states “We are Jewish artists, filmmakers, writers and creative professionals who support Jonathan Glazer's statement from the 2024 Oscars. We were alarmed to see some of our colleagues in the industry mischaracterize and denounce his remarks…Their attacks on Glazer are a dangerous distraction from Israel's escalating military campaign which has already killed over 32,000 Palestinians in Gaza and brought hundreds of thousands to the brink of starvation. We grieve for all those who have been killed in Palestine and Israel over too many decades...We honor the Holocaust by saying: Never again for anyone.”6. In some positive news, the National Labor Relations Board reports union election petitions are up 35% in the first half of Fiscal Year 2024, with unfair labor practice charges up 7%. The NLRB is quick to note that this increased caseload coincides with a long-term funding crunch that has seen their offices shrink by 50% over the past 20 years. NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo writes “Congress needs to fully fund the NLRB to effectively and efficiently comply with our Congressional mandate when providing quality service to the public in conducting hearings and elections, investigating charges, settling and litigating meritorious cases, and obtaining full and prompt remedies for workers whose rights are violated.”7. In Ecuador, a diplomatic crisis is unfolding with Mexico after Ecuadorian forces stormed the Mexican embassy to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought – and been granted – asylum at the Mexican embassy. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, or AMLO, decried this as a “flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico.”  CNN reports this provocation prompted AMLO to suspend diplomatic relations with Ecuador and pursue a case against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice. For its part, the U.S. State Department issued a statement saying “The United States condemns any violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and takes very seriously the obligation of host countries under international law to respect the inviolability of diplomatic missions.”8. NBC4 Washington is out with a blockbuster report on gun running within the D.C. Metro police department. Put simply, “For at least seven months in 2020 and 2021, the D.C. area's largest police department was…the only place D.C. residents could legally get a handgun.” Incredible as that may seem, that much was already public knowledge. Now, federal documents have been uncovered showing that a remarkable number of these guns ended up at crime scenes. In fact, “So many guns [were] recovered at crime scenes, in such a brief period, that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives placed D.C. police into a program designed to give extra scrutiny to dealers with higher levels of so-called crime guns.” In other words, D.C. cops, far from getting guns off the street, were in fact releasing so many guns on to the street that federal firearms regulators had to step in. So much for police improving safety.9. According to CNBC, “Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes initiated an investigation into tech magnate Elon Musk on Sunday…concern[ing] possible obstruction of justice by Musk, who said over the weekend that he would defy the court's orders to restrict or suspend some popular accounts on its platform.” This comes as part of a larger investigation into “so-called digital militias, a term applied to people accused of spreading misinformation online to attack democratic institutions in Brazil.” While the list of accounts flagged by the Brazilian government is not public, Wired reports this list includes “the fugitive far-right influencer Allan dos Santos, a supporter of president Jair Bolsonaro. (Dos Santos fled the country in 2020 to avoid investigation for disseminating disinformation.)… [and] right-wing YouTuber Bruno Aiub, known as Monark, who has over 1 million followers on X and has argued that Brazil should recognize the Nazi party, and Brazilian billionaire and Bolsonaro-supporter Luciano Hang.”10.  Finally, you might have heard that Amazon is shutting down the “Just Walk Out” technology at its grocery stores. This technology supposedly relied on an entirely automated system of cameras and sensors to track what people picked up at the stores and charge that to their Amazon accounts. Yet, Gizmodo reports “Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped.” This genre of story has become all too common – companies trumpeting ‘automation' when in fact all they're doing is outsourcing with extra steps. Just another reminder to remain skeptical of claims by big corporations. Often flashy new tech is just a smokescreen for regular old labor exploitation. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Mike Lisk AKA AP Mike of The Best Show and co-host of his own Egg Foo What?! podcast takes us INTO THE MARLOWEVERSE with a pair of very different portrayals of Raymond Chandler's cynical gumshoe Philip Marlowe. Mike's choice, MURDER MY SWEET (1944), is one of the first examples of film noir, and its success--along with DOUBLE INDEMNITY from the same year--added the spark that set off late 40s film noir explosion. It's also a way stoney and a total gateway drug to classic cinema with its snappy dialog and its trippy AF hallucination sequences. Former song-and-dance man Dick Powell plays Marlowe in this one, and he handles Chandler's dialog with a sense of cartoon humor that makes this one stand out. Directed by Edward Dmytryk (one of the Hollywood 10) with a script by John Paxton, the writer of several classic noirs (CROSSFIRE, CORNERED), and the uncle of crime fiction comic book writer Ed Brubaker (it runs in the family). Also starring noir ice queen Claire Trevor and ex-pro wrestler and Mike Mazurki. Available on disc at your local library and online via Archive: https://archive.org/details/murder-my-sweet-1944 Our next interpretation of Marlowe comes three years later while film noir was in full swing. Like Dick Powell before him, Robert Montgomery used his portrayal of Marlowe to shed his nice guy image, only he did it while barely being seen onscreen! As director and star of LADY IN THE LAKE (1947), Montgomery shot the entire film from Marlowe's jaundiced point-of-view. We only see the private eye when he's looking at himself in the mirror, making it one of the strangest films every made. While Mike and the OMFYS crew can't quite agree on if this cinematic experiment is successful or not, they all think that Montgomery put the dick in private dick as he is the surliest of the movie Marlowes. This is really saying something when you consider that Humphrey Bogart, Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and growly-assed Liam Neeson have all taken turns as the detective, and none of them are Mr. Sunshine. With Audrey Totter as the femme fatale, and Lloyd Nolan as a tough-talking cop who might not be on the up-and-up. Streaming on Criterion Channel. What's this, a well-regarded science fiction conspiracy thriller which featured an all-star cast and yet no one remembers it?? Well yeah if this film happens to come out the same year as Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind....two BEHEMETHS from this era directed by master filmmakers/household names George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg respectively.  Whereas this was directed by Peter Hyams....who actually built up a nice filmography himself over the next ten years including Running Scared, Outland, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact.  And this being his breakout success which he also wrote, it has ONE hell of a doozy of a plot....Three astronauts (James Brolin, Sam Waterston, O.J. Simpson) are about to embark on a TRULY historic adventure, THE first manned mission to the planet of Mars!  Except they're not actually going to Mars....they're supposed to stay on Earth and ONLY they are to know this.  Hmmm....it's a massive space program conspiracy lead by the late, great Hal Holbrook who is orchestrating it from NASA.  Fortunately there is ONE brave reporter who is out to uncover the truth and he's played by Elliott Gould. :) And of course don't underestimate the crazy aerial hijinks of a crazy crop-duster pilot played by the late, great Telly Savalas too while you're you're at it. :) Admit to yourself that it sounds intriguing. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week, Linda Wells tells us what you need to know about looking great in 2024 and why everyone seems to be very nosy these days. Then John von Sothen joins us from Paris with his report on a flamboyant Frenchman who rose to fame for saving and restoring lost film classics—but then found himself on trial for manslaughter. And finally, speaking of classic films, Josh Karp looks at the making of The Long Goodbye. Directed by Robert Altman and starring Elliott Gould, this reimagining of the Philip Marlowe character came out 50 years ago, and it set the stage for Chinatown and other modern-era noir classics.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

GGACP celebrates the birthday (September 22) of late comedian and actor (and "magician"!) Art Metrano by revisiting this interview from 2017. In this episode, Art looks back on his 50+ year career in film and television, his friendships with performers like Cornel Wilde, Elliott Gould and Robert Mitchum and his miraculous (and inspirational) recovery from a life-threatening injury. Also, Johnny Carson cracks up, Huntz Hall measures up, Buddy Hackett lays even money and Art parties with Lenny Bruce (and Clint Eastwood). PLUS: Jim Brown! "Night of the Hunter"! Raymond Burr goes it alone! The suavity of Dean Martin! The strangeness of Merv Griffin! And Art remembers the late, great Marvin Kaplan!  Learn more about your ad choices.
