In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Tom Lawrence about how to become a highly effective leader and making the shift from manager to leader. See the video here: https://youtu.be/g0o5OXkCmQw. Overview: There are hundreds of books that teach us how to be a “leader”. Most of them are good and teach the right things. But, Tom Lawrence has seen very few that teach us how to influence our people, or take our personal growth seriously, or even lead if you're not in a “leadership position”. Tom Lawrence (https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomlawrencementor/) wants to change that by writing books for people who are interested in leading and inspiring others. He wants to help people who are not in a leadership position but are aspiring to become a leader, current managers who want to take the next step and become highly effective leader, and to help senior leaders enhance their leadership skills. Tom began his career in 1999 as an apprentice mechanical engineer, working for an automotive company in Liverpool, UK. After completing his apprenticeship he was made redundant from that company and had to find other work, that is when he joined the rail industry working for Merseyside's train operator. He worked there for six years, and during that time he achieved his degree in mechanical engineering, his master's degree in maintenance engineering, and he started his first leadership role as a project manager in 2009. After leaving Liverpool in 2011, he has worked in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London where he currently lives. Tom became a chartered engineer in 2013, and is a mentor for new and upcoming engineers working towards their chartership. Working in these different cities he had remained within the rail industry and led different types of engineering teams, learning and practicing different leadership styles. Feel free to share if you have a friend or loved one who might benefit from this inspirational message! This podcast audio will offer some lessons and 4 practical steps on how to practice being yourself every day inspired by two of the greatest writers of all time: Oscar Wilde (the Picture of Dorian Gray) and David Foster Wallace (Infinite Jest). Who hasn't wondered what the best ways are to find happiness? The journey through life itself can be happy or sad depending on whether you might be an inherent optimist or an inherent pessimist. Oscar Wilde offers some very interesting insights into how we all might find true happiness from being ourselves. Sometimes this will require you to step outside of your comfort zone, but the benefits from that short-term pain can yield a significant amount of long-term gain. See below video and thoughts on 4 concrete ways to practice being yourself…it may just help you find lasting happiness… Overview: There are countless examples on how you might practice embracing who you are and being yourself. Below are just three examples you might consider: 1. Embrace a new job that may be different than what others expect from us. Perhaps the job is even in a new city or a new country and we might feel afraid that we won't be accepted. At a minimum, you'd learn a lot about the new region and may even find yourself enjoying the new city and culture even more than your previous home. Oscar Wilde left Ireland and Britain after being released from hard labor in prison and found happiness in France. 2. Go on that date you're hesitant about because, after all, the only thing you have to lose is an hour of your time and you could gain a lifelong friend or partner. You might even use Bumble to find friends and business connections, as we analyzed in a previous post on the best social media companies today. 3. Take that vacation while you're still healthy. Time is working against us all and one of the many lessons from 2020 might be to “not wait for tomorrow what can be done today” since the future is always uncertain. 4. Think of another idea unique to you. Think hard. Feel free to share if you have a friend or loved one who might benefit from this inspirational message! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/henry-gindt/support
