However, he rebounded in 1943, batting .305 and leading the National League with 112 runs scored and a career-high 20 stolen bases. December 12, 1954 – Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente lead the North to victory in the Puerto Rican Winter League's annual All-Star fundraiser. The Sporting News correspondent, Pita Alvarez De La Vega, gives the exuberant young duo's exploits some national exposure: “The league took a break from its pennant battle to stage the annual ‘Three Kings' all-star game at Mayaguez. All proceeds went into a YMCA fund to buy gifts for the island's poor children in keeping with the old Latin tradition of the Three Kings bringing gifts on January 6… The All-Star North team, made up of players from the Santurce and Mayaguez clubs, won the game, 7 to 5. Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente hit home runs for the winners.” December 12, 1969 — Cleveland trades pitchers Luis Tiant and Stan Williams to the Twins for 3B Graig Nettles, OF Ted Uhlaender, and pitchers Dean Chance and Bob Miller.Tiant posted a 9-20 record with a 3.71 ERA in 1969. However, his strikeout-to-walk ratio completely tanked, leading to suspicions that he was pitching hurt. He pitched very well at the start of the 1970 season. We all have cool things about ourselves, but how often do you take the time to list out the cool things about yourself? Chances are, it's probably not very often, but after listening to a podcast with Dean Graziosi, Mike felt inspired to reflect on the cool things about himself. In Dean's podcast episode, he talked about an exercise that he called “10 Cool Things About Me” and he listed them. It is really easy to forget what's cool about you because you might be focused on everything that's wrong with you, or wrong in your life or business. Mike encourages you to go in the opposite direction and take the time to sit down and list 10 (or more) cool things about yourself. And I like that despite its brevity, the post manages to include a lot of relevant information (and links), along with explanations of the key relevant theories of change and opportunity. How you can support our grantees Examples/excerpts from the post I've chosen some examples (pretty arbitrarily - I'm really excited about many of the other examples, but wanted to limit myself here), and am including quotes from the original post. 1.1 Dr. Sachchida Tripathi (air quality sensors) Sachchida Tripathi is a professor at IIT Kanpur, one of India's leading universities, where he focuses on civil engineering and sustainable energy. Dr. Tripathi used an Open Philanthropy grant to purchase 1,400 low-cost air quality sensors and place them in every block[2] in rural Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Using low-cost sensors involved procuring and calibrating them (see photo). These sensors now provide much more accurate and reliable data for these rural areas than was previously available to the air quality community. This work has two main routes to impact. First, these sensors make the problem of rural air pollution legible. Because air quality in India is assumed to be a largely urban issue, most ground-based sensors are in urban areas. Second, proving the value of these low-cost sensors and getting operational experience can encourage buy-in from stakeholders (e.g., local governments) who may fund additional sensors or other air quality interventions. Air quality monitoring is a major theme of our South Asian Air Quality grantmaking. We are actively exploring opportunities in new geographic areas, both within and beyond India, without high-quality, ground-based monitoring. Santosh Harish, who leads our grantmaking on environmental health, recently spoke to the 80,000 Hours podcast about this grant as well as air quality in India more generally. 2.2. SAVAC (accelerating the development and implementation of strep A vaccines) The Strep A Vaccine Global Consortium (SAVAC) is working to accelerate the development and implementation of safe and effective strep A vaccines. Open Philanthropy is one of very few funders supporting the development of a group A strep (GAS) vaccine (we've funded two projects to test new vaccines). GAS kills over 500,000 people per year, mostly by causing rheumatic heart disease.[3] Wh...
