On episode 596 of The Knife Junkie Podcast, Bob DeMarco speaks with Jess Hoffman of J. Hoffman Knives. Jess is a Northeast Wisconsin knifemaker who has transformed his hobby into a part-time career, making heirloom quality fixed blade knives from scratch for outdoor enthusiasts. His first knife was made with nothing but a file and elbow grease, but today he runs a fully-equipped shop producing knives that sell out at retailers like Knives Ship Free.Jess shares insights into his knife-making process, from his preference for heat treating before grinding to his philosophy on creating knives as functional tools rather than display pieces. His designs, many named after Irish counties as a nod to his family heritage, focus on ergonomics and practical use. Unlike many knife makers who aim to go full-time, Jess is content keeping his craft as a supplementary passion that will eventually support his retirement. The conversation covers the technical aspects of knife making, including steel selection, handle materials, and grind styles, along with business strategies and Jess's experiences at Blade Show. Listeners will appreciate his advice for new makers, emphasizing the value of mentorship and hands-on learning over YouTube tutorials. As Montana Knife Company's Founder and Owner, Josh Smith is the Master Bladesmith behind creating and designing working knives for working people that are built to last for generations. Josh grew up in Lincoln, Montana on the edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. At the age of 11 Josh's baseball coach, Rick Dunkerley, began teaching him how to make knives. In the very beginning, Josh would go to Rick's shop where he learned to remove stock blades under the guidance of Rick. About a year later, Josh began putting a shop together at his home. Josh's Dad gave him room to work in his equipment shop, and at the age of 12 Josh joined the American Bladesmith Society. Over the next few years Josh began forging and honing his craft. Josh turned 14 at the Eugene Oregon knife show where he met other incredible knife makers, all too willing to share their talents and knowledge with Josh. At 15 years old, Josh passed the Journeyman Bladesmith test in Atlanta, Georgia at the Blade Show. Josh became the youngest bladesmith to ever pass this test. The Journeyman test is a two-part process. A test blade must be forged and heat treated with the capabilities to chop a 1” rope in half, 2- 2x4's in half and then still shave hair. Once the cutting tests are done the blade must be able to bend 90 degrees in a vise without breaking. After passing the performance test the maker must present 5 knives to a panel of Mastersmith Judges. Each knife is examined closely to ensure the knife is made to the highest standard of craftsmanship. At the Journeyman level a maker is not expected to show perfection but is expected to show a sufficient level of craftsmanship expected from a professional bladesmith. Josh continued to work on his craft and at the age of 19 he earned his Master Smith rating from the American Bladesmith Society. Josh was the youngest bladesmith to ever pass the Master Smith test. https://www.montanaknifecompany.com/ Today's Sponsors: Black Rifle Coffee: https://www.blackriflecoffee.com/ BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.com/clearedhot

Zac Wingard of Wingard Wearables joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 519 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/519).Wingard Wearables creates EDC items out of weapons not thought of for everyday carry, like tomahawks, spears, war clubs, and an implement called the "Quill." And Zac has always been passionate about historical-edged weapons, with a special love for tomahawks. One thing that many current-day tomahawk makers get wrong (and that Wingard focuses on getting right) is weight. Unlike axes and hatchets, tomahawks are meant to be very light and nimble in the hand, and easy to throw. Each Wingard Wearable is made in America by skilled blacksmiths and bladesmiths, and numerous small businesses across three states. Like the name implies, Wingard Wearable tomahawks, pikes, and quills are intended to be worn close to the body and come with kydex sheaths for the sharp and pointy parts. These tomahawks and other implements are not just weapons but also intended for utility use. The Thumper is a wearable bludgeon designed around the Iroquois war club. These are made by Zac entirely in-house. And the new Wingard Wearables Dickpik Magnum is a full-sized spike with all of the utility of the DP with added dagger-like reach and penetration. The newest Wingard Wearables tomahawk is called the Sparrowhawk, and unlike the others in the WW lineup, it is full-tang and ready for rough duty. And Wingard Wearables now offers a unique EDC fixed blade knife called the Love Handle, known for its tusk-like shape and under-the-belly carry profile.2024 also marked the first year Wingard Wearables presented their wares at Blade Show, with a killer booth setup in the Baller Room.Find Wingard Wearables online at https://www.wingardwearables.com, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wingard_wearables, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/wingardwearables.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus & Melanie connect with Josh Smith, Master Bladesmith. His journey into the world of bladesmithing began at the young age of 11, under the mentorship of his baseball coach, Rick Dunkerley. Rick introduced Josh to the art of knife-making, guiding him through the process of removing stock blades. Josh set up his own shop at home, thanks to his father, who provided him space in his equipment shop. By the age of 12, Josh had joined the American Bladesmith Society, marking the start of his formal journey into bladesmithing. At 14, Josh attended the Eugene Oregon knife show, where he met other talented knife makers who generously shared their knowledge with him. This experience further fueled his passion and skill in the craft. At just 15 years old, Josh passed the rigorous Journeyman bladesmith test at the Blade Show in Atlanta, Georgia, becoming the youngest bladesmith to achieve this feat. The Journeyman test involves a performance test, where a forged and heat-treated blade must chop a 1” rope and two 2x4s in half and still be able to shave hair. The blade must also withstand a 90-degree bend in a vise without breaking. Following the performance test, the candidate presents five knives to a panel of Mastersmith Judges for evaluation of craftsmanship. Josh didn't stop there. He continued to hone his craft and, at 19, became the youngest bladesmith to earn the prestigious Master Smith rating from the American Bladesmith Society. Tune in to hear more about Josh's incredible journey and the dedication it takes to become a master of bladesmithing! In This Episode You Will Hear: • I passed the Mastersmith test when I was young, so technically, I'm a master bladesmith.  • That [Mastersmith] test and getting there was a lot of work over a lot of years, but really what is meant is you're really now ready to start learning. You can actually absorb what you're being taught. • If you're looking back at something you built 20 years ago, and you're still thinking that's the best thing you've ever done, you've really gotta be honest with yourself. You really haven't come very far. • There's a picture of me in Blade Magazine when I'm about 12, standing on a milk crate grinding knives. • I was pretty motivated. At 15 years old, I became the youngest journeyman knife-maker in the world, and then at 19 I became the youngest Mastersmith. • I started getting publicity in magazines when I was really young. When I was 16 years old, I probably had 150 knife orders from all over the world. • It's amazing today, with what's at your fingertips, you can learn how to do anything right from home. • Nothing even today replaces being in the presence of that master and having them teach you. • Style comes over time. • One thing I'm proud of – I didn't fall into making one style of a knife. I can do almost anything across the board. That is what a master is. • I won the best Damascus knife award in the world at the Atlanta Blade Show when I was 20 years old. • I've sharpened thousands of knives for people. It doesn't matter who made it. What matters is who carried it. • I don't need 300million Americans to be my customer. I want the 20-30-40-50 million that are patriotic as hell and appreciate quality. They want that story behind the blade. We're proving that American manufacturing is not just not dead, but it's desired by Americans. • Ten years ago, my house burned to the ground. I was completely broke as hell, living in a camper. And today, I'm shaking hands with President Trump, Junior's coming over and I pig hunted with Rogan. I get to be friends with heroes-our veterans. • People need to keep moving the ball forward and never give up.
