If you thought a podcast covering the week after the Queen's Plate would be an anticlimax, with nothing to talk about, listen to this one and admit you were wrong. There was a monster card of harness racing Saturday night from Mohawk - the William Wellwood Memorial, the Eternal Camnation, Jimmy Freight and Bulldog Hanover, both impressive in Canadian Pacing Derby Eliminations. At Woodbine on Sunday, 4 Yearling Sales Stakes races. We're still buzzing about Moria and in our Moria pack, trainer Kevin Attard tells us how the Queen's Plate changed his life. Owner Donnato Lanni of X-Men Racing explains how a group of harness men came to own Moira and how his children come up with colourful names, and Joe Nevills of the Paulick Report explains why Moira is a big story in the US. We've got the Travers Stakes from Saratoga and chaos at Mohawk Park last Monday in which no one was hurt thanks to safety protocol. Then there's this race from The Track On 2 in which the top 4 horses all shared the same name. And those listening to the entire podcast will be treated to music from Dire Straits, The Tubes, Norman Greenbaum, The Bobby Fuller Four and, of course, Jay and the Americans.

In Episode 10, Lisa talked to Joe Nevills (and Natalie Voss Nevills) about the 148th Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby being held on May 6 and May 7, 2022. Lisa has loved horses and ponies all of her life and has been a fan of horse racing since Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973. She's experienced the joy of seeing five Triple Crown winners in her lifetime and the heartbreak when young horses like Ruffian, Eight Belles and Barbaro couldn't be saved after an injury. Our lives have highs and lows, but we keep moving forward and horse racing is no different. Those connected to the industry do what they do because they love the horses and they love the sport. Her first guest, Joe Nevills, is the Bloodstock Editor at The Paulick Report, a turf writer, Arabian enthusiast and expert and Eclipse Award winner for his feature article Biting the Dust: A Long Goodbye to Mount Pleasant Meadows. Joe's love for horses comes from his family's Belgian draft horses and his grandfather's thoroughbreds who raced on Michigan tracks. Her second guest was Natalie Voss Nevills, 3-time Eclipse award winning writer and Editor-in-Chief at The Paulick Report, who has embarked on a new journey with OTTB Underscore, lovingly known as Blueberry. Natalie's 2020 Eclipse Awards were for articles in both the writing and feature/commentary categories. Her feature article was titled, “An Angel on His Shoulder” This Thoroughbred's Fate was Writen in Ink.

Thoroughbred racing has a new scandal on its hands this week as more than two dozen people have been charged in what authorities describe as a widespread international scheme to drug horses to make them race faster. In fact Jason Servis, the trainer of champion Maximum Security which crossed the finish line first in last year’s Kentucky Derby, only to be disqualified for interference is among those facing charges of administering performance-enhancing drugs to that horse and others. Horse trainers, veterinarians and others were detailed in four indictments unveiled Monday in Manhattan federal court. Natalie Voss, features editor for the Paulick Report talks with WUKY's Alan Lytle about what this could mean for the Keeneland Spring meet and beyond.

Horse Racing Fatalities - A Candid Conversation with Journalist Natalie Voss If you listen to or watch the news, you have seen the stories about the horse racing fatalities at Santa Anita this year. The number reached 30. Some horses died on the practice track, while some of them died while racing. They write the stories leading us to believe there has been a spike in horse racing fatalities this year. The New York Times did a story pointing a finger at the new track owners. The article examined if the owner coerced trainers into racing horses before they were ready. Earlier in the season as people looked for answers, an article in the Paulick Report, and racing magazine, journalist Natalie Voss looked into the possibility that the drug bisphosphonate was a factor. Jeff Goertzen of the Southern California News Group wrote a good article explaining horse racing fatalities at Santa Anita (published in the Mercury News June 30. 2019) Talk to an Expert Natalie Voss has been a journalist in the equine industry for years. she is the features editor for the Paulick Report and also has bylines in Chronicle of the Horse, The Horse magazine, The Blood-Horse, Quarter Horse News, American Racehorse among others. She has won journalism awards for her writing in the racehorse industry. When I requested an interview, she was quick to respond. She speaks clearly in a language laypeople can understand. We take a look at the Wednesday Keeneland card and welcome in Ray Paulick of the Paulick Report to talk about the news of the day, Santa Anita, the Paulick Report, and much more!
Both growing up on a farm in rural Illinois and his early work as a ghostwriter for Jimmy the Greek helped inform Ray Paulick's career path. Horse racing would eventually take him around the world as a journalist, and his most important contribution to the sport, the Paulick Report, has become an industry must-read for those wanting breaking news, features, and investigative pieces about the sport and business of racing. By covering stories that others won't touch, Ray has ruffled his share of feathers but the website's work has led to change in the industry. In this edition of Around the Track, Ray shares stories from the good old days and what it takes behind the scenes to get the goods for some of those investigative pieces (hint: there's a car chase involved).
