Bill has covered baseball for four decades, including as a Dodgers and Angels beat reporter for a number of outlets. Currently he covers the Dodgers for the Southern California News Group. Plunkett's book chronicles Ohtani's first season in Los Angeles, a whirlwind beginning with his free agency, to South Korea, to fraud and gambling debt by his longtime friend and former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani overcame that, even in a season in which he did not pitch, he won his third MVP award with the first 50-homer, 50-steal campaign in baseball history, and helped the Dodgers to a World Series championship in his very first taste of the postseason. When Vin Scully passed away in 2022, the city of Los Angeles lost its soundtrack. If you were able to deliver a eulogy for him, what might it include? What impact did he have on you? What do you carry forward from his legacy? Sixty-seven essayists—one representing each season of his career calling games for the Los Angeles Dodgers, from 1950 through 2016—reflect on the ways his professional and private life influenced them. The contributions include a range of stories and remembrances from those who knew and followed him. The consensus of the contributions is that Scully's actions spoke louder than his well-recognized words. This collection includes fellow broadcasters as well as historians, players, journalists, celebrities, and others connected to the game of baseball, with each piece introduced by sports journalist Tom Hoffarth. Readers can consider Scully's life through common themes: his sincerity, his humility, his professionalism, his passion for his faith, his devotion to his family, his insistence on remembering and giving context to important moments in the history of not just the game but the world in general, all wrapped up in a gift for weaving storytelling with accurate reporting, fellowship with performance art, humor, and connection. Tom Hoffarth is an Associated Press award-winning journalist with more than forty years of experience reporting in Southern California, focusing on sports and the media. He has written for the Southern California News Group, the Los Angeles Times, Hollywood Reporter, Angelus News, National Catholic Reporte, Los Angeles Business Journal, and Sports Business Journal. He is a coauthor (with Tom Kelly) of Tales from the USC Trojans Sideline: A Collection of the Greatest Trojans Stories Ever Told. Ron Rapoport worked as a sports columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times for more than twenty years and is the author of Let's Play Two: The Legend of Mr. Cub, the Life of Ernie Banks and the editor of The Lost Journalism of Ring Lardner (Nebraska, 2017). One of the issues that we have become fascinated with over the last couple of years is power: power availability, power costs, power reliability, growth in demand for power, and the overall complexity of our power systems. We've also become extremely interested in how these power issues are meaningfully affecting states, countries and industries. With all of that in mind, we read with particular interest recent publications from today's COBT guest, Susan Shelley, Columnist and Member of the Editorial Board for the Southern California News Group. Susan covers local, state and national issues across eleven daily papers including the Los Angeles Daily News, the Orange County Register, the Riverside Press-Enterprise and the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Much of the energy transition discussion is around decarbonization and economic justice, extremely important and complicated topics. What is often missing is an examination of the costs of various decarbonization alternatives and the ways in which those choices could be hitting different segments of society. On today's COBT, we greatly enjoyed discussing with Susan California's power choices and talking about their costs and their debatable benefits. As we talked to Susan, one thing we reflected on is that everyone loves California. It's beautiful, it's creative, it's a huge part of the US economy and has been a historical driver of innovation from Hollywood to Silicon Valley. In our discussion, we touch on one of Susan's recent articles entitled "Why California's Electricity Is So Expensive" (linked here), the disconnect between the perceived benefits of green energy policies and the reality of high energy costs for Californians, and how Californians are reacting to rising energy costs, with some leaving the state due to affordability issues. We discuss California's political landscape and recent legislation, the solar energy market and how fixed charges for electricity may disincentivize solar investment among residents, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), leaders in the environmental community, utility and infrastructure management, and advocacy for transparency regarding the costs of climate policies. With California planning to outlaw sales of new combustion engine cars by 2035 and to be fully powered by renewable energy by 2045, we reflected on whether California is "leading or lagging" when it comes to power choices. We also took a minute to ask Susan for her outlook for California in ten years. Overall, we are hopeful that California will find a better balance between hitting climate goals and providing affordable and reliable energy and power for their residents and their industry. The current path doesn't feel sustainable. To kick us off, Mike Bradley noted this coming week would be notably lighter on economic stats versus last week which saw hotter than expected CPI & PPI prints. On the broader equity market front, he flagged that trading this week would be dominated by quarterly results from Nvidia (NVDA), which likely set the tone for broader markets, the tech sector, and AI levered equities. He highlighted that WTI price increased to the upper end of its 3-month trading range and that DOE inventory stats in the coming weeks likely show continued large crude oil builds on historically low refining runs but will likely then reverse. He noted prompt price has declined to ~$1.55/M and the 12-month strip to ~$2.40/M and further noted that most natural gas E&Ps break-even price is above the current strip, and as such, have lowered their 2024 capex guidance. This coming week will be a heavy Q4 reporting week for E&Ps and Oil Service, and investors will be closely monitoring 2024 capex plans. He wrapped by highlighting Intuiti

On Tuesday January 23, 2024, one of the 100-plus reporters who was laid off via Webinar from the Los Angeles Times, stated it was “like a drive-by,” as it was clear that very few at this iconic 142-year-old newspaper had any idea, that in a matter of minutes, they were told that more than 20% of their staff was to be let go. And when events like this take place within a unionized newsroom, the workforce looks towards their guild leadership for help and support. Those tasks fell quickly on the shoulders of Matt Pearce, an 11-year veteran reporter at the Times and for past 4-years President of the Media Guild of the West, a chapter of the NewsGuild-CWA, representing over one-thousand journalists at the Los Angeles Times along with the Dallas Morning News, Arizona Republic, Southern California News Group, Austin American-Statesman, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Phoenix New Times and Desert Sun and other properties. It was only five years ago when the news team cheered when they were introduced to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the American transplant surgeon, billionaire, businessman and bio scientist who returned the paper to local ownership after 18 years, when he purchased for $500-million dollars, the Times, along with the San Diego Union-Tribune, from Chicago-based tronc. 2018 reporting directly after the deal was announced, stated that Shiong had “grand plans to restore the Times to greatness, stating: ‘The legacy of this paper is important to save, so what price is that worth?” Shiong announced the hiring of well-respected executive editor, former Wall Street Journal and Time Inc. Exec Norman Pearlstine along 80 new staffers, that including New York Times columnist Sewell Chan and former Slate editor in chief Julia Turner. It was later reported in The Wall Street Journal hat Shiong by investing strongly in news assets would easily achieve profitably by massively growing their digital subscriber base. In 2019 Shiong proclaimed: “I have made a decision to invest what it will take to make sure that the Los Angeles Times remains a viable business for at least another 100 years. When we get to five million ultimately, that will make that possible.” In July of 2023, the digital subscriber base was reported at slightly over 500-thousand, when the Times announced the launching of De Los, a new brand focused on identity and culture targeted to English-speaking Gen Z and millennial Latinos in the U.S. However, on January 23, 2023, it looks like this new venture will cease, since the union's negotiated “first in, first out” departure strategy reportedly resulted in that a large portion of those layoffs, included newly hired diverse staffers. In this episode of “E&P Reports,” we finally get an inside look at the newsroom of the LA Times, just a week after the surprising firing of over 20% of their unionized workforce from News Media West Guild president, Matt Pearce. We learn about how the firing process took place via Webinar, how the Union reacted to the unexpected downsizing, and what they are doing now in retaliation.

Syndicated columnist, author, and lecturer, Helen Dennis specializes in aging and the new retirement. Her more than 1,000 “Successful Aging” columns for the Southern California News Group reach 1.2 million readers weekly.  About Helen Helen Dennis is a nationally recognized leader on issues of aging and the new retirement with academic, corporate and nonprofit experience. She has received numerous awards for her university teaching at the University of Southern California's Davis School of Gerontology and for her contributions to the field of aging, the community, and literary arts. As one of the nation's leading experts on preparing for the non-economic aspects of retirement, she has worked with over 25,000 employees at corporations, universities, and religious institutions to do just that.  Editor of two books, author of over 100 additional articles and frequent speaker, Helen is co-founder of Renewment®: and co-author of the Los Angeles Times bestseller, "Project Renewment: The First Retirement Model for Career Women" (Scribner).  She has been recognized by PBS Next Avenue as one of the 50 influencers in aging. In her volunteer life she has been president of five nonprofit organizations and has been recognized with awards for her leadership.  Key Takeaways Ageism is the dominant theme in Dennis' Successful Aging column. Other key themes include loss—of loved ones, physical ability, and jobs—caregiving, and cognitive health. There is a shortage of geriatricians in the U.S.—approximately 7,500 board-certified geriatricians for nearly 56 million people 65 and over in the U.S.  Workplace and retirement are big issues for older adults—finding a new identity and sense of purpose as overarching themes. Dennis recommends taking a breath and thinking about what brings pleasure and joy. Aging is a hard sell. We need to figure out how to make it palatable and aspirational. Aging needs to be framed in both realistic and positive terms with a focus on opportunities.

Earlier this month, amid a sharp rise in book bans across the country, Governor Gavin Newsom called on educators to preserve students' access to books, including those that “reflect the diverse experiences and perspectives of Californians.” Individual book bans in U.S. classrooms and school libraries increased by 28 percent during the first half of this school year compared to the prior six months, according to a report by the free speech group PEN America. The increase is partly due to newly-enacted state laws, and the bans “continue to target stories by and about people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals,” according to PEN. While rare in California, book battles are percolating in Temecula and Huntington Beach.
