This week the Lakers will pass the quarter pole on the 2020-21 season, and things on the court are going well. The Lakers start the week 13-4, and on most nights find their biggest flaw to be a tendency to let teams eat into large leads they've built up, rather than continuing to roll that opponent out of the building.Of course, that means they have to build that lead to begin with, no easy feat in the NBA. First world problems, for sure. That the Lakers are good isn't surprising. That they're this good, despite clearly not putting forth 100 percent effort as a team? That's the first question we ask Kyle Goon, who covers the team for The Southern California News Group. Why have things clicked so quickly? Is it simply a matter of upgrading talent? We break down why the Lakers starting lineup, dominant last year, has been even more so this season. There is still some conversation around the starting lineup, and whether Dennis Schroder should be in it (especially as he suffers through a brutal January offensively), but what about the closing lineup? Against the Bucks last week, Frank Vogel finished with LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Alex Caruso and Schroder. Is this the lineup people should expect, all things being equal? From there, we turn to the other significant news of the week. Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others. It remains a profoundly difficult tragedy, particularly in Los Angeles and in NBA circles. It is, for a great many people, very difficult to talk about. But the Lakers still keep Kobe central to the season, not just as an organization but as a team. They still break huddles with "1-2-3 Mamba," for example. At the same time, interest in Kobe is real. Stories about him, remembrances of him, and so on. He continues to drive conversation, and generating content about him is undoubtedly an easy way to generate interest. So what's the line between responsible and respectful coverage of a legitimate news event and engaging in something more exploitative of his memory? Where the motivation shifts from serving the audience to serving the content creator? We talk with Kyle about that challenge. How he's handling it personally, and the ways in which trying to tell this story while hamstrung by COVID-based restrictions complicates things. His is still a complicated life to memorialize, as well. It's an interesting conversation for sure, one that gets into the nuts and bolts of how the work gets done. We wrap with a discussion about relative weaknesses... that may not be really that weak. How poorly is Wes Matthews actually playing, and how might it get fixed?

Leadership Strategies for the "New Normal" with Patti Cotton “Always be ready to serve people.” — Ursula Mentjes  During this pandemic, you probably have been wasting a lot of time worrying when, in fact, you could be out there selling and helping people. If you take the step today to break all your limiting beliefs and make things happen, you'll realize that you have so much to offer to the world. In this week's episode, Ursula Mentjes welcomes Patti Cotton as her special guest to talk about leadership strategies for the “new normal.” Patti Cotton, founder, and CEO of Cotton Group is a leader and strategist whose background includes more than 25 years of multicultural leadership experience around the globe in the worlds of diplomatic relations and corporate and non- profit arenas. Through her signature 360 ̊ Leadership brand, Patti works with key decision-makers and their executive teams to boost performance through developing exceptional leadership and aligning culture with strategic vision and direction.   Patti specializes in the following: talent development for emerging and experienced leadership; emotional intelligence skills for individuals and teams; high trust in teams; critical communications and conflict management; and culture alignment throughout the organization. She does this through providing consulting, 360° feedback for right fit and performance, executive leadership and group coaching, facilitation and training, and retreats. Her clients call her at key transitional points such as anticipating business expansion; negotiating or realigning culture due to a merger or acquisition; effective management of a multi-generational, multi-cultural workforce; developing talent for succession planning; and onboarding new leadership. A partial client roster can be found on her website: www.PattiCotton.com. Patti is a guest lecturer at universities for leadership and culture and advanced coaching methodologies. She is an author and a Fortune 500 speaker and is a contributor to the weekly business column, "Women, Money, and Mindset" for the Southern California News Group publications. She has been recognized by Inland Empire magazine as one of the most influential women in the region. She is a three-time recipient of The U.S. President's Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service. Part One of ‘Leadership Strategies for the "New Normal" with Patti Cotton’ Every one of you has this amazing pizza in your hands. And it is up to all of us to be out there offering. If people say no, it's okay because there's going to be some people who not only take a piece but come back for more. And we have to be ready to serve those people. When you're fully committed to serving others, your energy is going to draw people who need you, and at the same time, remembering that it's not about you, it's whether or not they want the help. “Your price should align with the level of your service.” — Ursula Mentjes  In case you're wondering if you should be selling even during the height of the recession, the answer is absolutely yes. You have to open the window. The money can't get to you if you don't open the window. However, if your pricing isn't in alignment with you, you're sending out an energy that feels off. It's not about selling to somebody. It's about helping them and being recognized so that you can continue to help other people.    Is there something that you're holding on to one of your gifts that if you get out there and offer, it will help somebody and change their life? If you could just put your stinking thinking aside, you'll find more opportunities to help and lead others where they're meant to go. This belief that nobody has any money right now or you don't want to take away from people who've lost jobs or who genuinely feel like they're struggling. It's not true. Many people are taking this time to invest in themselves. They're buying a lot of things. And they're still selling because they're coming from that place of service.  But until there's that financial exchange, you can't serve people. If it's not priced directly, then you're not serving them anyway because they're not going to be told there isn't enough skin in the game to make it worth their while to do so. Picture it like this. You're helping them to invest in a brighter future so that they can roll forward, survive, and lead to recovery.   Part Two of ‘Leadership Strategies for the "New Normal" with Patti Cotton’   What are the top two strategies Patti Cotton is using now to keep selling?    Number one, if you've got a strategic plan of any kind, or some sort of a year plan, whatever that is out the window right now, it's all about what you can do in the immediate. What's your 30, 60, or 90-day plan? Now, that's not new. But think of it this way. Think of the newness being that you're setting a direction and not a destination. You don't know where we're going to wind up.  Number two, if you wind up somewhere, it's going to shift again. So, think about setting a definite direction to help you. Maybe you pick a theme. Perhaps the theme is short term wins to fund the mortgage or maybe develop your thought leadership, but choose a theme and a direction and have a short-term plan. Because as you do this and you have things that you could do every day to work toward that, you're going to get there, and you're going to have a sense of control.   Here's the deal. Structure breeds predictability. Predictability lower stress. If you can help lower someone's stress, you're going to think not from the fight or flight part of your brain. You're going to come up here to the executive brain and do your best creative thinking, your reasoning, your analytical thinking, and your innovation. So, if you can get somewhere in the next 90 days, that helps you not only stay afloat but lead forward. Your inner agility has to rise up to the occasion in ways it never has before. How agile are you with change? When we get back to the way things were or once this is all over, forget it. There is no once this is all over. There are iterations going forward. It's as though you are the captain of a ship, and the waves come in different ways and so forth.  You're still heading toward that direction that you want to head toward. But you're going to have to roll with the waves. So, if you find that your language and your thinking reflect that you're just waiting until this is over, forget it. It's time for some action. No more time for paralysis. No more time for inaction. It's time to get going in. The way you're going to do that is with baby steps forward and use your plan. “We need human connection right now.” —  Ursula Mentjes (23:01-23:03)   Right now, what we need is a human connection. Contact your current clients, your former clients, your potential clients, and come with a spirit of service and ask them, what do you need right now? Get the pulse on what they need. Put aside the "Oh, I have these products and services right here!" even if that doesn't fit. You still have your products and services, but what can you shift to be able to team up with them? So many people get bombarded with emails and different offers. But sometimes, you just need to do such things without the intention of selling. Instead, do it with the purpose of helping. If you can do video calls, let them see you and look into their eyes. We need human connection right now. People are becoming very isolated, remote workers, even up to the President. They've figured out how to do the systems, but they haven't figured out how to get that connection. And you can be that for them. So, whenever possible, give them a call. It is not the new normal that's going to happen, or that is evolving. It is the next normal. In other words, change is here to stay. Human beings love safety, and they love security, but you will need to become very comfortable with continuous change. Our potential is limitless. We are being provided now with shifting landscapes that will allow us to grow our potential in ways that we could never have dreamed of before because people are going to have to adapt and shift.  Gone are the days when you had to write five emails, and maybe one or three out of ten will respond. This is time to get deep and connective because that's the one constant that people will seek in a world of change. For a few minutes there in the first half, Los Angeles Football Club was on its way to MLS Cup. A free kick strike from midfielder Eduard Atuesta in the 17th minute opened the scoring in the Western Conference Final against the Seattle Sounders and allowed the black and gold faithful to dream of hosting the championship game. However, it was not to be. LAFC allowed three unanswered goals to Seattle, losing the match to the Sounders 3-1. It was LAFC first ever loss to Seattle and the club's third loss at home in all competitions in 2019. Seattle's physical playing style frustrated LAFC enough to knock the team off of its path to glory. Instead of the Bradley Bowl, MLS Cup 2019 will feature Seattle vs Toronto III. An excellent match up, but not the one LAFC fans want or expected. How will LAFC's 2019 season be remembered now that the club has failed to lift MLS Cup? Ryan Wallerson of the Southern California News Group and Alex Dwyer of MLSsoccer.com weigh in on LAFC's performance against the Seattle, break down match play-by-play as told by Dweezy's game notes and discuss the season as a whole now that the playoff run is over.

Los Angeles Football Club beat the Galaxy, Los Angeles Football Club is two wins from history! It took six attempts, but the first playoff matchup between the Los Angeles rivals was LAFC's time to register its first win in the derby. It was without a doubt the biggest match up of the season thus far, and Los Angeles got up for it. Tickets to the match were hotter than the NBA season opener between the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers and there were over 300 media requests for the match. This was LAFC's biggest game ever, and perhaps the biggest league match for the Galaxy since winning its fifth championship in 2014. It was a massive moment, to say the least, and the game lived up to it. Eight goals tied the MLS playoff record, and while Zlatan had his expected moments of magic, a goal from Diego Rossi and braces from both Carlos Vela and the returning Adama Diomande gave LAFC all the offense in needed in a 5-3 victory that will stand as the team's biggest ever victory until... Tuesday night if LAFC can punch a ticket to MLS Cup with a win at home over the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Final. Ryan Wallerson of the Southern California News Group and Alex Dwyer of MLSsoccer.com break down LAFC's performance against the Galaxy, dig into the L.A. media's reaction to the match and preview Tuesday's conference final against Seattle.

Horse Racing Fatalities - A Candid Conversation with Journalist Natalie Voss If you listen to or watch the news, you have seen the stories about the horse racing fatalities at Santa Anita this year.  The number reached 30.  Some horses died on the practice track, while some of them died while racing.  They write the stories leading us to believe there has been a spike in horse racing fatalities this year.  The New York Times did a story pointing a finger at the new track owners.  The article examined if the owner coerced trainers into racing horses before they were ready. Earlier in the season as people looked for answers, an article in the Paulick Report, and racing magazine, journalist Natalie Voss looked into the possibility that the drug bisphosphonate was a factor. Jeff Goertzen of the Southern California News Group wrote a good article explaining horse racing fatalities at Santa Anita (published in the Mercury News June 30. 2019) Talk to an Expert Natalie Voss has been a journalist in the equine industry for years.  she is the features editor for the Paulick Report and also has bylines in Chronicle of the Horse, The Horse magazine, The Blood-Horse, Quarter Horse News, American Racehorse among others.  She has won journalism awards for her writing in the racehorse industry.  When I requested an interview, she was quick to respond.  She speaks clearly in a language laypeople can understand.  She has a love of horses and cares about her industry.  Her insights into the horse racing fatalities were invaluable to producing this episode. The Los Angeles Lakers are finally, officially in offseason mode, having essentially pieced together what will probably be their roster come opening night. As such, this offers a great opportunity to look back on what got them to this point and look forward on what might be coming. To do so, we welcomed Mark Medina of the Southern California News Group (and even let Harrison take part in the interview.) The conversation started with the relative success in this offseason compared to years past. The front office didn’t sign Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov to deals this year, so that right there is a great start. Lonzo Ball was almost inarguably this summer’s biggest addition not named “cap space,” so we looked back on the events that got him to Los Angeles. Finally, it’s impossible to talk about Lakers personnel without looking ahead to LeBron James (and maybe another superstar) eventually wearing purple and gold, so we tried to figure out how likely that might be: Learn more about your ad choices. Speaking of OTAs, Vinny has you covered on those as well.  Vinny also breaks down the new-look offensive line. How will it come together? Will Greg Robinson succeed at right tackle when he struggled so much at left tackle? Will he be replaced before the season is over? When it comes to the new receivers, how will their ability to run routes help quarterback Jared Goff succeed in this offense? Lastly, what is Goff doing to prepare for the new season? Is he taking accountability for last year and trying to improve? Only Vinny has the answers on this week's Turf Show Radio.
