In this Meaningful Money Q&A episode, Pete Matthew and Roger Weeks answer six listener questions on UK personal finance - from gifting money to children using the 'normal expenditure out of income' rules to whether ISA withdrawals can support one-off big spends. They also cover pension consolidation and FSCS protection, investing while living abroad, how DB pension accrual affects SIPP annual allowance, and how to bridge the gap to State Pension without over-relying on AVCs. Finally, they tackle the practical steps to opening a Stocks and Shares ISA - and how to get started with confidence. Practical, jargon-free guidance for UK savers and investors navigating pensions, ISAs, tax and retirement planning. Shownotes: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/QA53 02:35 Question 1 Hi Pete and Roger, I have followed meaningful money for around 6 years now and it has been an invaluable source of sensible advice which I have followed. This has left my wife and I in a very good situation for retirement as you will see below. You deserve an MBE at least!. Love the double act with Roger as well. I am 62 and my wife is 60 years young. Our total pensions will be around 35K a year which is all we need for our basic living cost and general going out etc. We have a house worth £750K with no mortgage and no debts. I have a DC pension around £920K and my wife around £650K and our two boys have just moved out of our house and so we are now retiring and relearning life B.C. (Before Children). I have begun looking into gifting them money out of excess income. I like the idea of giving with warm hands - and strangely so do my boys! Putting our scenario into google gemini, using UFPLS with regular drawdowns and keeping within the current 20% tax band we could each have around 50K income after tax over the next 30 years. Really cannot see us spending more than 40K/year travelling and this will certainly reduce in time as we get older and so will give the increasing excess to our kids. To keep HMRC documentation simple (hmm) we plan to use our joint account to give gifts to the boys but I am guessing that we will need to prove to HMRC that we have equal income to do this? So my wife will take 8.5K less from her DC pension than I from mine. I hope this all makes sense. I presume if our incomes were not balanced we would have to pay out from our individual accounts and document both for HMRC purposes? In addition I have 200K and my wife around £150K in ISAs and savings . I know we can each gift 3000/year from the ISA as well as using excess income from our pension. Again, I asked google gemini about this and apparently I can use the ISA for certain capital payments. Eg a) to buy a new car b) redo bathroom/bedroom c) a large holiday Not sure what would be the position if we said our largest holiday each year is paid from an ISA and any other holidays are from our pension income and we still gift excess to the kids? - seems a very grey area. I am sure in time HMRC will look closer into this area. So I think it will be sensible to still use the ISA in the next few years and not take everything from the pension and possibly change to funds from accumulation to income as well? One last thought as all this is based on the current tax rates. The IHT rate NRB has not changed since 2009 and would be worth around £530K today and I am presuming there will be increasing pressure to raise this given house price growth and especially after 2027 when pensions are included in the estate for IHT? Best Regards, Bill 09:37 Question 2 Dear Pete and Roger, I can't thank you enough for the excellent free content you put out into the world. I recently got diagnosed with a degenerative condition which will affect me and my family down the line. Your podcast has inspired me to take control of my finances including putting the right protections (insurances) in place and using investing to help navigate a more uncertain future - THANK YOU! The information is accessible and you guys make me chuckle as I go about my day! My question... I am keen to make my life easy when it comes to managing my finances but I have hit a wrinkle in my plan. My preference would be to consolidate my pension into as few pension accounts and underlying funds as possible. To me the levels of protection available through the FSCS seem too low to be compatible with keeping a pension all with one provider. Am I missing something? How do you think about balancing this risk, without ending up with lots of pension accounts with different providers? Additionally, I have been selecting the same low cost All-World tracker ETF across my family's ISAs and SIPPs, is this inherently risky too and should I aim to use different fund providers (perhaps that aim to achieve the same investment objective). Anyway, I may be being overcautious here or be misunderstanding the level risk but any reassurance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again Andy 18:24 Question 3 Hi Roger and Pete, I'm 32 and I've been listening the podcast for a few years and the advice (particularly about investing) has helped me immensely. I have a question about investment portfolios when moving abroad. I moved away from the UK 2.5 years ago, at which point I stopped investing into Vanguard and moved to Interactive Brokers. I still have a decent amount invested in Vanguard, but I'm not sure whether it makes sense to consolidate everything into one platform or keep it split over two. I don't have any immediate plans to return to the UK, although I imagine I will eventually. Do you think it makes any difference in how the investments are split, or am I worrying about nothing? Thanks for sharing any of your *thoughts* and perhaps clearing this up for me. Keep up the amazing podcast, Michael (originally from Cornwall!) 21:23 Question 4 Hi Pete and Roger I recently discovered your podcast and am working my way though the back catalogue! I am finding it extremely informative and it is helping me demystify a subject I have found confusing for a long time, so thank you. My question is how do I calculate the amount I can contribute annually to my SIPP whilst also contributing to a DB pension and AVCs (£200/month)? My annual gross salary is £25744. I opened the SIPP to give me flexibility to retire earlier than 67 when I intend to access my DB pensions (as well as my current local government DB pension I have a deferred University DB pension from previous employment), ideally between 60-62, and access the SIPP along with my S&S ISA to bridge the gap. Thanks, Melanie 27:28 Question 5 Hello Pete & Roger, I'm a long time listener and as a result in far better financial shape than I was for many years, thank you. In work I am often akin to the Shawshank Redemption character Andy Dufresne as I find myself offering financial or pension scheme advice to colleagues. This advice ends with recommending your good selves and the knowledge repository that is the Meaningful Money archive and books! I am 56 and just over 4 years from my planned early retirement at 61, when I will have 36 years contributing into a company DB pension. I plan on taking this in a stepped format (with PCLS) to offer a higher initial payment until my state pension starts 6 years later at 67. To maintain basic rate income tax, I am paying my maximum matched pension contributions plus AVC's through salary sacrifice (until 2029) to keep just under the 40% tax limits. My wife will be solely reliant on her (full) State Pension having not contributed to a personal pension, she will receive this when I am 64, meaning our combined funding danger zone will be around 3 years during which we may need funds to top up our income either from the PCLS pot or ISA savings to this final combined total, "our figure". So my question: You repeatedly talk about retiring with options such as having pensions, ISA's and savings etc. but I am concerned my pension and AVC fund will be totally concentrated with little else. After maximising the pension and AVC contributions it looks likely I will not contribute enough to fund a savings pot that could comfortably cover the 3 year danger zone. Will this pension / AVC concentration matter? Should I continue paying the AVC's to avoid higher rate tax on my income and recovering tax rebate into the AVC pot? To me this makes sense, but would funding a savings pot give us flexibility to fund our pension gap somehow that I am missing, and do I need to target an ISA or other savings pot in my remaining working years. This prospect would feel like not living for today, but retirement is in touching distance so might it be worthwhile? Many thanks & best regards, Tim 34:52 Question 6 To the Bruce Springsteen and Little Steven of the financial world! Hi guys my name is Cam, I'd just like to say you guys are absolutely fantastic at what you do, the knowledge you provide is genuinely incredible and immensely helpful. I think I speak for all your listeners when I say without your podcast there would be a lot of people struggling with personal finance! Keep up the good work Pete and Rog! I am 27 years old, 17 months ago I quit my 9-5 and started my own dog walking business, I have since trained to become a dog trainer too. My business has gone from strength to strength and I'm very proud. However the change from going from a wage structure to a varied income per month has been a tough adjustment especially when saving and wanting to invest and so on. I contribute to my pension each month, I pay into a LISA each month (for a first time home) the only thing I don't do is pay into a stocks and shares ISA. Firstly how do I open one? I have listened to your podcast for well over 2 years now and have listened to the majority of the back catalogue, I feel like I know what to do but it's a genuine fear that's stopping me from opening one. I don't know how to explain it - it's almost like my head is telling me 'don't open one you'll mess it up.' Is it literally as simple as sign up to a provider, open an account, add money in each month? I feel stupid saying I'm fearful of opening one but I genuinely am! The last part of my question is simply is there anything else I should be doing that I'm currently not? Insurance wise I have income protection and the necessary insurances for my business. Thanks once again you absolute legends! Cam Boring Money ISA Comparison: https://www.boringmoney.co.uk/compare/stocks-and-shares-isas/

This episode of Prison Breaking With Sarah And Paul is sponsored by Hulu. Stream Prison Break on Hulu (U.S.) and Disney+ (Internationally) Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein welcome this episode's co-writer, Seth Hoffman. Prison Break was Seth's first Hollywood job and he was one of the first people hired onto the show by Matt Olmstead as the Writer's Assistant. He shares his unusually quick rise from writer's assistant to staff writer and now showruns WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY. He describes how he was hired at the start of season one, promoted unusually quickly, and why the room was uniquely functional and generous, offering assistant education through episode cut viewings and editorial notes. They explore season three's tonal shift to a darker, less-controlled world for Michael, shaped in part by looming Writer's Guild strike uncertainty and network concerns about bleakness. Hoffman shares casting memories (notably William Fichtner as Mahone), the use of fake audition sides to avoid spoilers, limited writer-on-set practices, and lessons from producer Karen Usher. He also pitches a later “season five” concept set in Hell and answers a “Sona escape partner” question with Andy Dufresne. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay realize hope is a dangerous thing while sitting down to watch the highest rated movie on IMDb, 'The Shawshank Redemption.' Bombay starts off the episode by remembering an insane Valentine's Weekend bender that ended with watching this movie, and promptly realizing that was the wrong call. Then the guys discuss whether this is the most overrated movie of all-time. After a ridiculous run on cable that saw 'Shawshank' play practically around the clock for 12 years it may just be the most watched movie of all-time. There's a toothlessness to the prison portrayed, which has the boys sharing stories about the bids their dad did behind bars. Ultimately, Bombay and Andy decide while the movie is severely overrated there's still enough good qualities to have you tuning in for more, the foremost being Morgan Freeman incredible voiceover work. The episode ends with them breaking down the impossibility of Andy Dufresne's escape, and wondering if he and Red got down carnally when they reconnected in Mexico.
What if the key to reinventing your career isn't a dramatic leap—but a quiet, stubborn plan built one small step at a time? In this warm, deeply honest episode of Legendary Leaders, host Cathleen O'Sullivan is joined by Lorraine Whale, qualified genealogist, house historian, and founder of Time Flies Ancestry—who spent over 25 years in HR and leadership roles before following a passion she'd been nurturing for decades. Their conversation spans career reinvention, the emotional cost of falling out of love with a profession, the underrated power of a good plan, and what it really means to lead yourself forward when nobody else is handing you a roadmap. Lorraine opens with something that will resonate with many—she doesn't see herself as a leader at all. But as the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear that her definition of leadership, building trust, giving others confidence, showing up with tenacity—is exactly what she has been doing all along, in boardrooms, in genealogy archives, and at home as a single mum raising a son she is quietly and fiercely proud of. She shares how she mapped her escape from HR with an Excel spreadsheet worthy of Andy Dufresne, why redundancy felt like liberation, and how a squiggly career can be the most intentional one of all. They also get into the human side of HR—why it too often becomes a ticketing system rather than a true business partner, what real people functions should look like, and the question that changed everything for Lorraine: Do you want to retire working in this? And for anyone wondering whether it's too late to start over, Lorraine's answer is simple: find the thing that lights you up, make a plan, and don't just do nothing. This is a conversation that will meet you with grace wherever you are in your career—and quietly nudge you to take that first step. Episode Timeline: 00:03:54 "I've never seen myself as a leader" 00:06:38 From admin to HR to genealogy — finding her place 00:16:39 Solitude, community, and the AGRA network 00:18:38 Falling out of love with a profession 00:21:19 What great HR actually looks like 00:29:02 The Andy Dufresne escape plan 00:34:02 Squiggly careers and waiting for what's next 00:40:13 The first small step 00:43:32 Loving the problem-solving of genealogy 00:49:43 The village it takes to raise a child 00:56:13 Self-care when there's no time for it 00:58:26 Find the thing that lights you up 00:59:13 How to find Lorraine and Time Flies Ancestry Key Takeaway: Reinvention Isn't a Leap — It's a Long Game: Changing direction doesn't mean scrapping everything overnight. Lorraine spent years qualifying, downsizing, and planning while still in her HR role. The most meaningful career shifts are built slowly, deliberately, and with a very clear goal in sight. Your Whole Career Is the Foundation, Not the Obstacle: A squiggly path isn't a weakness — it's a toolkit. Every function, every stakeholder, every challenge you've navigated gives you a perspective that a linear career never could. Don't discount it. Build on it. Ask Yourself the Uncomfortable Question: Lorraine's turning point came from one honest question — would I want to retire doing this? Sitting with that discomfort is where real clarity begins. If the answer is no, that's not a crisis. That's a starting point. If You Have a Goal, Make It Visible: Good intentions don't create change — a plan does. Whether it's an Excel spreadsheet, a timeline, or a milestone tracker, seeing your progress move is what keeps you going when the goal still feels far away. Are we back? YES! Do we know what we're doing? NO! But damn it feels good to be back. Not only are we back, but we are no longer shackled to Joe Rogan. This is how Andy Dufresne must have felt escaping Shawshank Prison. In the next couple weeks we'll need as much feedback as possible from you, the loyal listeners! Let us know what works, what doesn't, that sort of thing. We hope you all had a lovely December and we hope the new year is treating you well! Enjoy!
There are a lot of sayings related to living and dying. One of my favorites is from the Stephen King book and movie Shawshank Redemption, where Andy Dufresne says, “Get busy living or get busy dying.” Mark Twain said, “The fear …
Near the end of "The Shawshank Redemption," escaped prisoner Andy Dufresne writes to his friend Red: "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." But earlier, Red had warned Andy differently: "Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane." Two perspectives on hope. One life-giving, one destructive. Which is right? The post SILY 679- Hope in the Unseen appeared first on Golden Spiral Media- Entertainment Podcasts, Technology Podcasts & More.
"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies." Andy Dufresne wrote those words to his friend Red once he had crawled through a river of, well, you know how the movie goes. Buckle up, Husker fans, we're in the river where we don't want to be. Instead of winning our second consecutive road game for the first time since 2006, the Huskers did next to nothing Friday night in Minneapolis, falling to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 24-6. Nebraska never got its offense off the ground, and what little yardage it could muster was negated by nine sacks for 63 yards. Even taking away the penalties (6/65 compared to 3/30 for Minnesota), the Huskers were simply outplayed. And you hate to see it. Maybe you hated seeing the all-white uniforms. Maybe the pink accents instead of the traditional red caused a visual anomaly for the Huskers. This game was lost on the offensive line. And the maddening part is that it provides a blueprint for the remaining Husker opponents on how to beat us. We were thinking "10-2, 11-1, a bubble CFP team." Now we face a repeat of 2024 when we started 5-1 and became bowl eligible in the second-to-last game. So about that hope? Where'd that go? Here's the thing…if you didn't have hope, you wouldn't watch the game. If you didn't have hope, you wouldn't watch this show. We are all here because we hope things will get better. No one is cashing out. No one should be throwing in the towel on a 5-2 team that is still steeped in capability. So it wasn't their night on Friday. Saturday's game against Northwestern is a new day. All we can do is HOPE that this coaching staff will have these players ready to go then. Go Big Red. Even in the face of Armageddon.
Miszónak is száz a vége, hallgassátok!

Join us for an engaging episode of Parsha & Prose with Rabbi Shlomo Gemara as we explore the Torah portion of Bamidbar through the lens of the iconic 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption, directed by Frank Darabont and adapted from Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. In Bamidbar, God instructs Moses to conduct a census of the Jewish people, assessing their numbers and strength as they prepare to enter Canaan. Rabbi Gemara masterfully connects this parsha to The Shawshank Redemption, drawing parallels between the structured organization of the Israelite camp and the enduring hope of the film's protagonist, Andy Dufresne, who clings to hope in the face of an oppressive prison environment. Through lively discussions, heartfelt stories, and moments of laughter and reflection, Rabbi Gemara and I (Avrum) uncover the profound themes of hope and purpose that resonate in both the parsha and the film. Tune in for an inspiring and thought-provoking conversation! Am Yisrael Chai.

In this episode of the Cheers to Freedom podcast, hosts Josh Taylor and Levi McClendon discuss their recent trip to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and its significance to Levi, inspired by the movie Shawshank Redemption. They explore themes of personal growth, perseverance, and the importance of community, drawing lessons from the film's characters, particularly Andy Dufresne and Red. The conversation emphasizes the power of small actions, trusting the process, and the impact of bettering oneself while uplifting others. Ultimately, they encourage listeners to choose freedom and actively write their own stories in life.
In the 1994, critically acclaimed movie, The Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman's character, “Red,” sits with his friend and fellow inmate, “Andy Dufresne,” brilliantly portrayed by Tim Robbins, in the courtyard of Shawshank Prison. “Hope can be a dangerous thing,” Red says, as Dufresne stares blankly into space. It certainly can be…. Or, it can be what keeps a man alive under extraordinary circumstances. For today's episode, I take you, the listeners of The Missing Chapter Podcast, to my home town; the small hamlet of Altamont, NY, some 30 mins. outside of New York State's capital of Albany for a truly remarkable, inspirational story of determination and survival. Like a Hollywood movie script, when our nation called upon the “greatest generation” to defend freedom from tyranny and fascism, men, women… families… responded like never before. Their stories – this story – from the nestling hills of the Hudson Valley to your ears on an episode that truly “hits home” for this host. Vintage Sand listeners this month will get something of a twofer, a BOGO episode. Since we really have not had the chance to do a full necrology since July, Michael takes the time to relate the accomplishments of some very bright lights in the film business that have gone out over the past four months. These include artists who leave behind a great legacy and holes that can never really be filled, including people like Dame Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones and Alain Delon. Before we get to that point, though, we begin with a very different kind of eulogy: our reflections on Francis Ford Coppola's summa, the egregious "Megalopolis". We felt, as we did for Scorsese in our episodes on both "The Irishman" and "Killers of the Flower Moon", that a sprawling work by one of our greatest filmmakers, in this case a film that had a gestation period of nearly fifty years, deserved to be examined both in its own right as a work of art and in context as part of its creator's career. In hindsight, it's risible to think that at the end of the 70's, film fans were heatedly debating who among the heroes of the American New Wave would end up with the greater career: Scorsese or Coppola? (Let's not even talk about some of the others around the periphery of that conversation at the time, like De Palma, Bogdanovich, Friedkin, Rafelson, Cimino, Lucas and yes, perhaps even Spielberg—although, surprisingly, Paul Schrader has been coming up with a few late-period masterpieces). Megalopolis ends that debate, and stands, as I referred to "Eyes Wide Shut" relative to Kubrick's career in our episode devoted to that film, as a cardboard tombstone to the career of a gifted filmmaker. While the members of Team Vintage Sand, whose bottomless intrepidity was confirmed by each of us successfully wading through (a la Andy Dufresne) the 2 ½ hours of dreck that is "Megalopolis", did find the occasional positive to light on, for the most part it was an example of a work of incredible consistency, in that just about every choice Coppola makes as writer and director was the wrong one. Perhaps the comparison with Scorsese is unfair, and certainly nothing could ever erase the impact of Coppola's four films of the 1970's, or even the smaller delights of his later work (Mike's a fan of "The Cotton Club", and I've always thought that "Tucker" was a much better film than its reputation dictates). But for us, the truth is that between the gratuitous literary and high culture references, the sophomoric philosophizing that would make any actual 10th grader cringe, the derivative film tributes sprinkled throughout (including, unbelievably, a moment where the film appears to physically burn up in the projector—a brilliant idea had Bergman not done it 60 years ago in "Persona"), and a script that even good actors like Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito can't save, "Megalopolis" was, quite unintentionally, the funniest film of the year—and given how much we love and admire its creator, the most painful. Once can only hope that this is not Coppola's final statement, and that in future efforts he will trust his audience, not try so hard to impress us with his erudition, and remember what made him so great in the first place

What is this strange feeling? It feels strange but also really good. I think it's what some people call “hope”??? Yes, as a fanbase, we haven't dared have hope for many years. Not to relive the past decade but everytime we had enough enthusiasm to ‘hope', we were taken out with a sledge hammer at the ankles, (å la Stephen King's Misery) crippling all further dreams of the Huskers ever being good again. Huskers are 5-1, the Hoosiers are 6-0, and both teams are coming off a bye week. Saturday will be the showdown in Bloomington Indiana at 11 am central. Nebraska is the “underdog” this week with Indiana being a -6.5 favorite. The Cornhuskers are very familiar with being the underdogs, especially the veterans on the team who came back for another year to prove that this team that began a rebuild last season is a WINNER. Indiana, on the other hand, is in the first year of their rebuild. Curt Cignetti is a good head coach whose record at his previous schools shows he knows how to win. However, this is the Big Ten, and winning here ain't that easy (just ask Scott Frost). This season, Indiana has defeated UCLA and Northwestern, both in the Big Ten BUT both are in major overhaul mode after losing their head coaches (UCLA this season, NW last season). As Husker fans, we have been here before, it's hard to drink that ‘Rhule-ade' after so many disappointments but tonight we will echo the sentiments that Andy Dufresne wrote in Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption; “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies” Go Big Red!
It's a classic ep this week, as we combine TWO episodes -- Ep 214 and Ep 218, both from March 2016 -- with special guests Clay Shaver and Jeremy Burgess Both episodes run through our (then) all time top 10 movies, as we were finishing up a series giving our top 100... Here are the original show notes! Finally... it's here! Dave, Mikey & Pinky have entered the Top Ten in our year long series of our Top 100 favorite films... and because it's so monumental, the Deucecast Movie Show gang had to bring in two of their favorite dozen or so guests -- Local Birmingham filmmaker Jeremy Burgess and host of the Remodeling Clay podcast Clay Shaver -- to give senseless... er, senseful films. But first, a rousing game of Chronology, with great categories like "The Mitten"... "Bale-Out"... "Mikey Likey"... and of course, the always loved "Potent Potables". Starting with a reminder of how each of the participants came up with their own Top Ten. Jeremy offers up a John Carpenter masterpiece, talks about his favorite horror films and the movie that "is underrated for being overrated" and possible "date rapey". Pinky falls in love with Anna Kendrick and cancer, talks about a movie fetish and lists the best Rings film... Clay discusses a Vietnam classic, his best Kevin Smith and a quintessential buddy cop film... Dave has more Anna Kendrick meets airport stories, celebrates a sinking ship and an Elton John song... and Mikey feels some heat, feels some Breakfast and has some romance. Some True Romance. Also, Kate Hudson may or may not come on our show, ever... Next, how lowly ranked should "Pulp Fiction" actually be? And... coming soon, a new reality show called... "The Burgeler"? AND THEN It's been a year in the making, but here it is... five films from Mikey, from Dave, and from Pinky, along with special guests Remodeling Clay Shaver and local filmmaker Jeremy Burgess, who give their five of all time. Jumping right in, with Mikey's #5, the discussions flow on where Diehard 2 stands in the original trilogy... two Gregory Peck films... the delight of "In Bruge"... a double dose of Andy Dufresne... Harrison Ford makes a big splash... when "Pulp Fiction" is too low... a film that millennials should discover... Dave's previous favorite film ever until this one... Thoughts on "Blade Runner 2"... Pinky's weird party going habits... the generation gap between Bale's & Keaton's Batman... how to get ripped off after being paid $4 billion... and who does Jeremy think is kidding when they talk about their favorite film? Plus, tips on creating your own Top 100...

Would you say Shawshank Redemption is "a movie with a happy ending"? Years ago as a young husband, that's what Brian picked to watch when his wife made a request for just such a film with a happy ending. (Spoiler: Shawshank Redemption was not the kind of movie she had meant.) For this momentous 145th episode, and the first ever LAMPC pick WITH CLIPS FROM THE MOVIE INCLUDED IN THE EPISODE (go watch it on Canon+, people), the guys discuss a movie this film that was a box-office failure upon release, and has since climbed into the upper echelons of film conversations. Brian asks Nate about its popular appeal. Nate surmises why it flopped upon release, and makes suggestions for improving that release (if given a time machine). Brian fails at describing Andy Dufresne's character flaw. Nate avoids talking about Stephen King, who wrote the original story. They discuss how Christians interpret movies wrong (Andy giving the 12 prisoners beer on the roof is the Last Supper) and how atheists do the same thing (Zihuatanejo is a Nietzschean paradise beyond guilt and innocence!). How can small changes lead to big results? In this episode of Flow Over Fear, Adam Hill shares how seemingly small changes can lead to significant transformations over time as well as insights on cultivating daily habits and breaking big goals down into manageable steps. Massive results start with tiny tweaks - so don't underestimate the impact of your next small step today! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The creative benefits of daily pun practice Using small actions like gratitude journals to increase life happiness Shawshank Redemption demonstrates the power of persistence over decades Incremental improvements led Adam to complete an Ironman Small tweaks can transform a company's growth and sustainability Episode Highlights: [03:22] Posting puns on social media to boost positivity Simply changing your daily social media habit from posting angry political rants to instead sharing lighthearted jokes and puns opens your mind to more positivity. It trains your brain toward creativity rather than negativity. [09:35] Lessons on persistence from Shawshank Redemption The movie Shawshank Redemption provides a powerful example of the impact of small, consistent actions. Andy Dufresne's character patiently chips away at his cell wall with a small rock hammer for decades, escaping in the end. This shows that persistence, with even seemingly minor improvements over long periods, can lead to truly transformative results [12:39] Major transformation is going to start with those small tweaks Significant life changes cannot be achieved through huge leaps alone, but rather must begin with incremental improvements in our daily habits and routines. By consistently making small adjustments, we can eventually transform our circumstances and ourselves in powerful ways. [21:59] Daily tweaks lead to transformation If you're not making little changes throughout the day, you can get stuck in your habits or your behaviors. Then transformation is less likely to happen because there's nothing prompting that transformation. [23:05] Creativity sparks new ideas By practicing creativity regularly, even in small ways, Adam found it helped develop his ability to think more divergently and consider new potential solutions. This mental flexibility aids transformation by making one more receptive to fresh perspectives. The prison so nice, they names it Eastern. Well, actually, it's not nice at all. It's terrifying. Even Al Capone found this place to be immensely scary. and now we all get to learn about just what made it scary as Hell to even him. And maybe be a little freaked out ourselves with everything that could possibly happen to a person stuck in forever solitary confinement.Listen to Davis get incredibly scared about the possibility of being completely alone in a cell for doing very little. Listen to Jake as he tells us about some of the scariest encounters that people have experienced even while on film. And listen to Lisa give us some of the most gruesome "reform" techniques taken by a prison up to this point.Don't get locked in. And if you do, don't forget your Rita Hayworth poster and your best friend, Andy Dufresne. That's the only way you're getting out of this prison. But audibly, you will be stuck here with the rest of us for the 127th episode of The Possibly Paranormal Podcast. TPPP 127: Eastern State Penitentiary.Support the show

No Manny this week and there's a few close calls. We talk Griner, Tesla and a Worthless of The Week.
This is a special episode for us, in part because we both love this movie. But ... it's also a bit of a send-off for us. We're taking an indefinite hiatus - more on that in the episode. We've loved making this podcast and hope to be back soon, but need a little time off. In this episode, we discuss estate tax issues, whether Andy Dufresne was awful at tax law or maybe a secret genius, and talk about what it feels like to break free of the obligation to work. You don't want to miss this one! IMPORTANT NOTE: We discuss in the episode that inheritances are tax-free to the beneficiary. Caveat we forgot to include: we were talking about federal law. Some states do impose an inheritance tax. If you inherit money, talk to a pro to make sure you pay any appropriate taxes. If you'll miss this podcast, please let us know! Then we talk with Jordan about the games he's created, including the popular Don't Get Stabbed! Don't Get Stabbed! is a party game where you get to kill your family and friends! ... for pretend of course. It's inspired by horror movies like Friday The 13th, Halloween, and Scream, but is light-hearted enough for everyone to enjoy. #035: "I guess it comes down to a simple choice...really: Get busy living or get busy dying." - Andy Dufresne, Tim Robbins in Shawshank Redemption Folks, do you feel your life is just busy? Busy with work, busy with running your business, busy with kids, busy preparing for the holidays around the corner? Have you ever took a second to pause and just ask yourself, what am I busy doing? Am I busy living or busy dying?Quote: “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” - Dalai Lama XIVFolks, I wholeheartedly agree that love and compassion is a necessity. It's not just compassion towards others, but compassion towards self that's an important first step. You've heard me mentioned the 3 C's in Episode 33. However, the main question for today is, what's the key to happiness in life? In today's episode, I'm going to share how combining self-compassion and this mystery key are both necessary pieces in igniting your inner happiness, creating your life purpose, and living a fulfilled life. What is this mystery key? In today's episode, I will share:The Chinese character of 'busy'Fire cannot burn without oxygenSelf-compassion and mystery key to happinessBusiness vs BusynessI'll share action steps that will help you create more self-compassion for the remainder of 2022!Join our Boom Vision family and hit subscribe! Ryan and David are thinking about House of the Dragon spoilers as they check out the jam-packed catalog for the November 3 - 6 Propstore Entertainment Live Auction in London. From Roy Batty's Blade Runner trenchcoat to Andy Dufresne's Shawshank Redemption bible, from something from Star Wars to something else from Star Wars, the boys are checking out Day 1 of the auction—all under the incredibly creepy eye of a Christopher Reeve Superman mannequin.
The BTS team discusses the enigmatic character design of Andy Dufresne, the film's vignette story structure, and the devastating one-two punch of Red's narration and Thomas Newman's score.
This week's Stephen King discussion intersects with our love of true crime. And because our special guest, Kate Jenkins, happens to be a lawyer, we wasted no opportunity to discuss one of our favorite novellas and movies in the realm of an actual murder case. Would Andy Dufresne have actually been convicted of the double murder that sent him to Shawshank State Prison? Could he have ever had his conviction overturned on appeal? Not only that, but we also use this amazing novella and film to discuss how it forces us to reflect on aspects of criminal justice, prisoner rehabilitation and institutionalization, compassion, and what it says about the Judeo-Christian values that shape our society.Okay, also we pick which of our celebrity crushes would be on the poster that covers the tunnel we'd be digging out of our prison cells. Really, we run the full gamut here.Additional Information:Chris's Podcast, 80s High: https://the80shigh.podbean.com/Ear Hustle Podcast -- Stories of prison life: https://www.earhustlesq.com/Shawshank Redemption Movie Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shawshank_RedemptionRita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption Novella Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rita_Hayworth_and_Shawshank_RedemptionShow Credits:Artwork: Nathaniel Dickson http://ndickson.comMusic: Spencer Morelock
