K.J. Aiello is a Canadian who describes herself as a mentally ill writer. It is, she says, who she is. K.J. discusses her fabulous new book, "The Monster and The Mirror." It's a unique blend of memoir, research, and cultural criticism in which K.J. tries to understand her own mental illness using "The Lord of the Rings," "Game of Thrones," and other stories as guides to heroism and agency as well as cautionary tales of how mental illness is easily stereotyped as bad and violent. K.J. and her work can be accessed at https://www.kjaiello.ca/ The views and opinions of the guests on this podcast are theirs and theirs alone and do not necessarily represent those of the host, Westwords Consulting or the Kenosha County Substance Abuse Coalition. We're always interested in hearing from individuals or organizations who are working in substance use disorder treatment or prevention, mental health care and other spaces that lift up communities. This includes people living those experiences. If you or someone you know has a story to share or an interesting approach to care, contact us today! Follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Anzi, voglio fare "come mi pare"».

Putting together an IPO is no easy feat. Just getting your finances in order can be a herculean effort. Add in the laundry list of compliance requirements, and it simply becomes too much for most firms to handle on their own. That's especially true for young companies in emerging industries like biotech or AI, where corporate governance may have taken a backseat to product development. Enter, Mike Aiello. He's the CEO and managing partner at Centri Business Consulting, one of the country's fastest growing accounting and advisory firms. Mike founded Centri in 2011 with a focus on capital markets, transactions and emerging growth organizations. It has since grown from its Philadelphia, mid-Atlantic roots to eight offices nationwide, with around 250 staff providing support to more than a thousand companies. Mike walks us through the massive undertaking that is IPO preparation, and how Centri guides their clients through that process. He also shares his thoughts on the current state of IPOs and SPACs, and explains why he feels optimistic for the future of capital markets.Highlights:Mike's path to founding Centri (3:14)Centri's menu of services (6:26)The state of the IPO market (8:34)SPACs (12:09) Getting ready for an IPO (13:56)Working with AI companies (15:39)Recruiting talent from 'The Big 4' (18:05)Importance of corporate culture (19:22)Priorities for growth (21:57)Upcoming 'Capital Markets Conference' (25:28)Links:Centri LinkedInCentri TwitterCentri WebsiteICR LinkedInICR TwitterICR WebsiteFeedback:If you have questions about the show, or have a topic in mind you'd like discussed in future episodes, email our producer, marion@lowerstreet.co.

Decades of research prove that highways tear apart the physical fabric of our cities, segregating neighborhoods by race and income and making it harder for anyone outside a car to access the jobs, services and communities they rely on — at least if those things happen to be located on the other side of a dangerous road. But what impact do highways have on the invisible social fabric of our places — and does the internet provide a bridge between these disconnected communities, or only a digital mirror of the sharp divides that highways draw between our neighborhoods? Today on the Brake, we're talking to data science researcher Luca Maria Aiello from IT University of Copenhagen, who found a fascinating way to quantify exactly how much downtown highways disconnect our social networks, in addition to our sidewalk, bike lane and transit networks. And along the way, we discuss what those divisions cost us in social mobility, democratic cohesion, and real dollars and cents.

Research is suggesting the action and inaction of services can cause trauma to parents and caregivers. Systems generated trauma is an emerging term in academia but we suspect many parent carers and practitioners will understand what it means - be able to describe a time they have experienced or witnessed it. In a world where trauma informed practice is heralded as the right way to work, systems and organisations need to also be aware that their own policies, procedures, actions and inactions may in fact be the very source and cause of trauma for parent carers. The Skies We're Under podcast is delighted to welcome expert Dr Ana Aiello. A researcher and academic who specialises in parent carer blame and is also a sibling. She walks us gently through; institutionalised parent carer blame its impact it has on Fabricated Induced Illness (FII) guidance emerging research on systems generated trauma We hear some stark truths which Lucy and Rachel discuss alongside a general rant about the potential for someone to do a poo just as you are rushing out the door (husband/toddler - delete as appropriate) If you want to dig deeper into Dr Aiello and Dr Clements work: 2021 Parent Carer Blame report https://cerebra.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Final-Parent-Blame-Report-20-July-21-02.pdf 2021 BBC news item on the Parent Carer Blame research https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-57915086> 2023 Fabricated Induced Illness report https://cerebra.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/FII-Final-report-2023-Nov-01.pdf 2023 Channel 5 News programme on the FII research https://x.com/5_News/status/1724851237194023080 A press release about our implementation work on FII - namely, the negative reply of the RCPCH to our request that they amend their FII guidance https://www.lukeclements.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Press-Release.pdf 2024 Systems Generated Trauma Conference: leaflet (attached); webpage with all the resources for this event (including weblinks to some of the presentations on the day) https://cerebra.org.uk/research/building-practical-solutions-for-traumatised-families/ Thanks to the lovely folk at Rose Speech Therapy for sponsoring this week's episode. Today we're falling head first into the mind-bending chaos of quantum biology, piercing the veil between the microscopic world and the bizarre playground of quantum mechanics. Dr. Clarice Aiello of the newly founded Quantum Biology Institute, formerly of UCLA, guides us through the magnetic highways of nature, where cryptochromes and electron spins become the rogue navigators of life's hidden machinery. The discussion is a madcap chase after how these quantum phenomena might drive not only the migration of birds but the very basis of human cells—bordering on sci-fi insanity, but with hard evidence in tow. By the end, it's clear we're standing on the edge of a revolution, where biology and quantum physics collide in a way that will reshape our understanding of life and its untapped potential—but only if we can accept the scale of the challenge. A three-tier showstopper cake may have beautiful pipework and neatly done icing, but if it's overbaked and dry on the inside, it's not a good cake. The same is true for marketing. If it has no message but it's beautiful, it's not good marketing. Focusing on substance over style is one of the many lessons we're taking from The Great British Baking Show in this episode.Together with the help of our special guest, VP of Corporate Marketing at Trellix, Sara Aiello, we talk about being brand classy, going for substance over style, and trusting your gut.About our guest, Sara AielloSara drives impactful brand and communication initiatives that inspire, inform, and elevate global businesses. At Trellix, she led the brand launch of Trellix from FireEye and McAfee Enterprise. Previously, as Head of Growth & Engagement for Amazon's large item business, she accelerated business growth and customer engagement. At BlackBerry, as Vice President of Field Marketing, Sara led global marketing and sales enablement teams, enhancing the company's technology recognition. During her tenure at Cisco, she spearheaded the security customer experience practice, significantly advancing customer adoption. She also led the successful marketing strategy for a billion-dollar service rebrand. As Director of the Executive Briefing Center for Cybersecurity at The Boeing Company, Sara's expertise in customer experience played a pivotal role in securing critical contracts.Sara holds a Master of International Business from Seattle University and a Bachelor of Science from Clarkson University. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Great British Baking Show:Be brand classy. Create content that has integrity and stands proudly for your brand. Think about making something that's evergreen instead of trendy or reactive. Sara says, “You can never go wrong with being brand classy. Something that lives on, endures. Sometimes you'll want to take a quick hit at a competitor or something like that, but that's not going to age well. And so always be kind of brand classy in what you do.”Go for substance over style. Every so often in The Great British Baking Show, a contestant will create a beautiful confection that doesn't taste as good as it looks. That's when Paul Hollywood says, “Style over substance.” In content, you want to make something that has meaning while also being visually attractive. So always think about your message first before focusing on the beauty of it. Sara says, “You have to actually know what you want to say first before you start thinking about how beautiful or whimsical you want it to look.”Trust your gut. Tune in to what feels right and rings true to your brand. In The Great British Baking Show, contestants have to navigate the technical challenge often based on their gut alone, having to make a cake based on directions like, “Make a genoise sponge.” You may not always have all the information in marketing either, but Sara says, “Be comfortable with not having all your information.” Trust that your gut will lead you in the right direction.Quotes*”One thing we haven't hit on is the storytelling aspect. You really identify and make memories with the bakers and the way that the show tells their backstory. And so you feel really connected. And I think that marketers should remember the power of storytelling. A lot of times, we want to go into stats and figures, but that's really not going to engage our emotional side of our brain, which is what we need to be persuaded.”*”ROI, marketers love to talk about this. I think it really comes down to setting clear goals. A lot of times, especially when it comes on the brand side as opposed to the demand side of marketing, it isn't super easy to see and have metrics, so it's really important to set clear goals from the start. So then you can see if you're succeeding or not.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Sara Aiello, VP of Corporate Marketing at Trellix[1:00] B2B Marketing Lessons from The Great British Baking Show[5:10] Behind the Scenes of The Great British Baking Show[11:11] Relating The Great British Baking Show to Marketing[17:52] The Importance of Visuals and Positivity in Marketing[23:24] The Human Element in B2B Marketing[25:46] The Power of Storytelling in Marketing[34:25] Building the Trellix Brand[38:04] Engaging Content Strategies[46:35] Final Thoughts and Advice for Marketing LeadersLinksConnect with Sara on LinkedInLearn more about TrellixAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. How can districts reverse chronic absenteeism and gain a deeper understanding of why students don't come to school? Can we measure how “connected” students are to their schools? How do we impact the level of connection they feel with potential mentors in their lives? I invited Jen Perry to episode 172 of the De Facto Leaders podcast to discuss this topic and explore ways schools can assess student engagement and put meaningful programs in place to increase it. Jen Perry is Senior Manager of Learning Design and Whole Learner at Edmentum. Jen has worked over 30+ years with youth in educational and community settings. As a teacher, administrator, and trainer, her passion has been to help educators develop an understanding of the importance of social emotional learning and build trauma-informed responses and systems. This work has included supporting youth, administrators, and schools in understanding behavior and implementing transformational change through strength-based approaches. In this conversation, we discussed:✅Using positive youth development models to support youth involved with the legal system.✅Changing our assumptions about kids who have “risk factors” and resources. ✅Helping youth build developmental assets through community navigation and academic support.✅Research on the effectiveness of high-impact tutoring in increasing attendance and student engagement.✅How do we help kids connect academic work to meaningful life goals? ✅Giving students the language they need for self-advocacy and self-awareness.In this episode, we mentioned the following resources:“The Poverty Problem: How Education Can Promote Resilience and Counter Poverty's Impact on Brain Development and Functioning” by Horacio Sanchez Link here: https://www.amazon.com/Poverty-Problem-Resilience-Development-Functioning/dp/1071842927Maguillie, L, Perry, J., Aiello, J. Welcome, Steph Aiello! In this inspiring episode of Pushing Forward with Alycia | A Disability Podcast, Alycia Anderson sits down with Steph Aiello, a disability advocate and a trailblazing quadriplegic makeup artist, content creator with brands like Ulta, Maybelline, and Fenty. Steph's journey from a life-altering car accident on the eve of her cosmetology school dreams to becoming a celebrated beauty influencer is nothing short of extraordinary. Steph shares how her occupational therapist reignited her passion for makeup during her darkest moments, teaching her to adapt and use her body in new ways. Her story is a powerful testament to resilience, showcasing how makeup became more than a beauty tool—it became her therapy and a symbol of her identity. Key Takeaways:
Aiello del Friuli is a village in northern Italy, about 75 miles from Venice. It's home to about 2200 residents and more than a hundred sundials — so many that it's known as the “village of sundials.” It hosts a sundial festival every year, in late May. The village began earning the nickname in 1994. A resident created a sundial and hung it on the side of his house. It was more than just a pointer and some numbers, though — it was a work of art. So others in the village asked him to make sundials for their homes. He obliged. And before long, other artists got into the act. Today, the sundials are spread all across town. There are more than 20 in a plaza next to a museum, but they're in all the neighborhoods as well. Like the original, many of the sundials are mostly two-dimensional and are displayed on building walls. But some are more three-dimensional — globes, bowls, and other shapes mounted on their own. The sundials follow many artistic themes. Some have religious or historic significance. Others depict nature or agriculture, or have a more abstract quality. And the bounty keeps on growing. The annual festival includes a contest for the best sundial created during the previous year. All of the sundials also do a job: They track the time as the Sun crosses the daytime sky in the “village of sundials.” Tomorrow: the head of the serpent wriggles into the evening sky. Discussing race in America is never easy, and it was even harder in 1989 when Spike Lee released "Do The Right Thing," a film filled with ambiguity, tension and Rosie Perez dancing. This supersized episode, commissioned by listener Grant Leisure, compelled the Shat Crew to take a hard look at police brutality, gentrification, reverse racism and freedom of expression. Valdosta State University history professor (and Episode 244 guest) Tom Aiello ("Dixieball: Race and Professional Basketball in the Deep South") returns after a two-year absence - for an enlightening look at the curious cultural history of the city of Atlanta's awkward relationship with professional hockey. In his new book "White Ice: Race and the Making of Atlanta Hockey," Aiello interestingly juxtaposes the National Hockey League's aggressive expansion in the late 1960s/early 1970s (including a new WHA-hastened Flames franchise in 1972), against the city's de facto status as the "capital of the Deep South" - and its population's rapidly changing racial and socio-economic contours. To wit: For its own part, Atlanta had been watching as White residents left the city for the suburbs over the course of the 1960s. As the turn of the decade approached, city leadership was searching for ways to mitigate white flight and bring residents of the surrounding suburbs back to the city center. So when a stereotypically White sport came to the Deep South in 1971 in the form of the Flames, ownership saw a new opportunity to appeal to White audiences. But the challenge would be selling a game that was foreign to most of Atlanta's longtime sports fans. Against that backdrop, of course, the Flames (1972-80) lasted but only eight seasons - and its NHL successor Atlanta Thrashers (1999-2011) did not fare much better in the face of similar and arguably even more pronounced circumstances. And yet, the "dream" of another franchise lives on. Might Atlanta get a third chance to finally make pro hockey stick? What's changed (and hasn't) in the region's demographic landscape and economic calculus?
