Today on the show, we highlight the 2024 Fidelity Retirement Report and its findings on how Canadians are viewing and preparing for retirement. Host Glen Davidson sits down with Peter Bowen, VP of Tax and Retirement Research and Michelle Munro Director of Tax and Retirement Research, as they break down the perspectives, challenges, and trends of pre-retirees and retirees. Peter notes the survey noted many pre-retirees are delaying retirement - delaying beyond 65 or in some cases not even considering retiring at all. In addition, Michelle points out women view retirement more negatively than men. Peter breaks down the impact of the recent capital gains inclusion rate changes saying it will affect those with second properties like vacation homes, but also those with incorporated businesses. Peter says be sure to connect with your financial planner to figure out the best course of action before the changes come into effect in June of this year. They also stress the importance of having a written financial plan that addresses each of your financial goals - 88 percent of Canadians surveyed say they feel financially prepared for retirement with a written plan compared to 56 percent without one who do not feel prepared. Today on the show, Peter Bowen, VP of Tax and Retirement Research at Fidelity Canada, breaks down the capital gains changes from the recently released 2024 Federal budget. He explains what the tax changes could mean for your clients and potentially their investment and retirement plans. Peter reviews what changed, including how the capital gains inclusion rate increased from one half to two thirds. He says most individuals won't be affected, but these tax changes could affect corporations and trusts plus those with second homes, vacation properties and cottages. Peter also breaks down possible steps and scenarios for those affected by the capital gains changes. Those being small and large business owners, even doctors on the small business side. Should you consider selling your investments within your private corporation, or sell your entire portfolio to trigger the capital gains? Peter says the decision depends on the time value of money and if you want to pay taxes early at a lower rate. Either way, he suggests, to sit down with your financial advisor and figure out a plan well before the June 25th deadline. On the program today is Fidelity's Vice President of Tax Research Peter Bowen and host Kelly Roberts, Vice President of National Accounts for a deep dive into how the Alternative Minimum Tax works and the changes you can expect. Earlier this year, the Federal 2023 budget announced significant changes to the Alternative Minimum Tax system. The changes apply to certain areas like inclusion rate on capital gains, and stock options. So how will this affect investors? And what should advisors keep in mind when informing their clients of these changes? Peter says changes to the Alternative Minimum Tax or AMT doesn't come into effect until next year. Some key highlights - the tax rate on newly calculated tax base (for AMT) is going up from 15% to 20.5%. This is federal rate, provincial rates are layered on top. Peter says the good news is the exemption is increasing from $40 000 to $173 000 – this is the deductible amount before calculating tax burden based on increased rate. He adds 80% of capital gains is included in calculation, next year will be 100%. In terms of advisor planning for the changes to the AMT, Peter says is less of providing tax advice but helping clients be aware of changes and suggesting the right strategies. Changes don't come into effect until next year, so if your client is looking to sell something with significant capital gains, could be done before year end. And they are planning on using capital loss this year, maybe delay that as in future years will only be able to use 50% of that. Recorded on September 14, 2023. On May 11, Fidelity Investments Canada hosted FOCUS2023, a daylong event for advisors featuring Fidelity's portfolio managers, subject matter experts and thought leaders. Sessions ran both on-stage in Vancouver to a live audience, and from our Toronto studio for a crowd of thousands more online. On today's podcast, our retirement and tax experts Peter Bowen and Michelle Munro discuss the new FHSA or First-Home Savings account - the main highlights of the new investment vehicle and how the FHSA could fit in your overall investment strategy. Buying a home can be a challenge for many first-time home buyers especially in today's environment, but this new registered account allows you to save up to 40-thousand dollars tax-free towards the purchase of your first home. Peter explains how the FHSA is a powerful investment tool that combines the benefits of an RRSP and TFSA. He says there is no tax on the withdrawal from a FHSA if it's going towards the first purchase of a home and there are other options like transferring FHSA funds into an RRSP or RRIF. And Michelle addresses common questions about the FHSA such as contribution room and criteria and eligibility of the investment account. Recorded on May 11, 2023. As President-elect Joe Biden transitions into the White House, there are certain U.S. tax rules that could cause Canadians living and working in the United Sates significant issues. Our tax and retirement expert Peter Bowen outlines the possible tax implications on Canadians and what it could mean for estate planning, foreign US assets, and many other tax issues. Main topics he covers in this podcast include: changes to personal tax rates, additional payroll taxes, targeting certain cohorts, itemized deductions, and expanding the Child & Dependent Care Tax Credit. Peter says it’s currently unclear as to the extent of these changes to tax policies because control of the Senate is still up in the air. But in the end whatever the outcome, there will be large implications on many tax issues such as tax credits and retirement contributions. Recorded on November 12, 2020.
Fidelity tax and regulatory experts Peter Bowen and Michelle Munro discuss the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on retirement planning and the key findings for investors in Fidelity’s 2020 retirement report. For 15 years now, Fidelity Investments Canada has delivered the Fidelity Retirement Survey Report, with the goal of helping financial advisors better understand the latest trends, so they can successfully guide their clients through their retirement journey. This year’s report features exclusive insights on the impact of COVID-19 on retirement planning, and also leverages 15 years of retirement data to directly compare the impact of COVID-19 on retirement against the impact of the 2008-2009 financial crisis. Many investors are worried about their financial situation, creating a swing in results that isn’t normally seen year-over-year. The biggest swing was seen among pre-retirees, with 40% saying they feel negatively about retirement. This was the highest percentage since the survey debuted in 2014. Many people have lost their jobs and are worried about their future finances. Michelle believes this drives home the importance of working with a financial advisor. Peter notes that people who have a plan tend to feel more prepared (financially, socially, emotionally and even physically), but only 22% of pre-retirees indicated that they have a written financial plan. What pressing issues are on the tax horizon in light of the COVID-19 crisis?
