When planning to immigrate to Canada, we often spend a considerable amount of time learning about schools, where to find a house, the cost of groceries, the best cities to find a job, rental costs, and more. We rarely bother trying to understand how the Canadian financial system works. It doesn't help that once you land and walk into a bank to open an account, the banks stuff a credit card into your palms and ask you to review dozens of forms and sign. So it's not surprising that when we ignore the one thing that underpins most of the factors mentioned above, we experience a significant drop in financial confidence as we battle with our settling-in checklist. Check out Interac Corp's survey on newcomer's financial confidence.I was no different. And if I could go back in time, the one biggest thing I would have done differently is to buy the book, Seventeen to a Millionaire by Douglas Price. Yes, it was written for a seventeen-year-old in Canada. But I dare say as a newcomer to Canada, we are all like 17yos when it comes to understanding the nuts and bolts of the Canadian financial system.I had the honor of chatting with Douglas Price on The Newcomers Podcast about his book and why it's a MUST-READ for newcomers. We also talked about:* The golden rules of making money in Canada* How to approach the world of credit* Why he thinks the TFSA is one of the best tools for saving and investing money* The money truths he's learned while working on the book* And the backstory of how the book came to lifeEnjoy. P.S. Seventeen to Millionaire is currently #1 on Amazon's Personal Financial Planning book list and was chosen by Moneysense contributors, influencers, and money experts as one of the top 25 timeless personal finance books. In this episode, we sit down with Christine Traynor, from Victoria, BC, a seasoned real estate professional who has navigated the industry from multiple angles. She started as a paralegal in mortgage enforcement/foreclosures, became an appraiser in 2002, worked in for a high end real estate developer then buying a real estate appraisal firm, buying two more with creative financing and in 2024, sold those businesses for a seven figure exit. What's now keeping Christine busy is her current ventures as an Edmonton, Alberta real estate developer, multifamily investor, Christine shares a wealth of knowledge and insights that are sure to inspire. For those looking to raise capital, specifically registered funds like RRSP's and TFSA's, Christine is involved with a Mutual Fund Trust as part of a 94 unit build so you'll want to hear about that. Christine shares how and why she chose not to invest in local, tenant friendly, unaffordable Victoria, BC for landlord friendly Edmonton which is something pretty much every BC, Ontario, Quebec investor from a tenant friendly jurisdiction is considering. Christine is an advocate for empowering women around investing and finances, and is the host of She Builds Wealth, a (free) online community where she leads women in conversation around real estate investing, business, money and mindset. She is also the creator of She Builds Wealth: A Foundational Course for Women on Building Wealth in Real Estate. On today's episode we have another Canadian guest, Kyle Prevost, who achieved financial independence at an early age (he was able to pull it off in his 30s). He's also done hundreds of financial talks and interviews over the years with both regular Canadians, and some of the most highly respected financial experts in both Canada and the US. In this episode, we discuss what he's learned from these hundreds of discussions that he's had, especially when it comes to best practices and financial tactics that we can apply to our own lives. He also shares advice on how he personally minimizes and thinks about fees in his own investment portfolio, and we also discuss his findings on CPP and OAS in Canada, which in case you're not familiar, are the two main income sources from the government that Canadians rely on in their retirement. Kyle has done a bunch of research and interviews on how viable the CPP and OAS is long-term, and if we can continue to expect to receive them in our older age, even if we're nowhere near that traditional retirement age of 65 yet. We cover all this and more in the interview. Also, free tickets to the Canadian Financial Summit: Kyle and I have run the Canadian Financial Summit together for years in the past, this year I'm attending it as one of the speakers, and I have free tickets for you which you can get at buildwealthcanada.ca/summit. In case you're new to the Summit, it's a fully online event for Canadians where you can stream all the educational talks. I'll be speaking at it again this year, this time about RRSPs, and I'll be there with 36 other Canadian personal finance and investing experts who will be sharing their expertise and best practices when it comes to investing, retirement, financial planning, ETFs, pensions, cash flow management once you hit your financial independence number, and much more. It's happening really soon this month, October 23-26. I hope to see you there, and again you can get free tickets to the event by going to buildwealthcanada.ca/summit I hope to see you there! Kornel

Which account should you choose, a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) or a Tax-free savings account (TFSA)? This is one of the most common decisions that Canadians must make when it comes to investing, but it will also elicit some of the most passionate responses. RRSPs especially get a lot of undue skepticism, with some even labelling it as a scam. Today we take a deep dive into both of these savings accounts, exploring the downsides and benefits of each, and how to decide which account is right for you based on your savings goals. With the help of Conquest Planning, a specialized, in-depth modelling tool, we look at a range of scenarios incorporating different variables, like income and family size, and break down our analysis regarding the RRSP vs. TFSA decision for each scenario. We discuss key factors to consider, including the basic personal amount tax credit, which allows RRSPs to act as a tax flow-through, and the guaranteed income supplement (GIS), which can impact retirement planning. Our conversation also examines how to approach family size and longevity, as RRSPs become more advantageous with longer lifespans. Join us today to learn about the benefits and flexibility of each of these accounts, the surprising ways RRSPs often outperform TFSAs, and find out which one is right for you! In today's episode Warren Ingram answers your questions about retirement annuities (RA) or a tax-free savings accounts (TFSA). Warren discusses the benefits of a TFSA including tax-free growth, RA offers a tax deduction on contributions, how Regulation 28 governs the maximums in retirement funds, and that decisions should consider both time horizon and psychological tolerance for risk and offshore allocations.TakeawaysConsider both time horizon and psychological tolerance for risk when deciding between a retirement annuity and a tax-free savings account.Regulation 28 governs the maximums in retirement funds, but a balanced portfolio with a high allocation to shares is generally recommended.Retirement funds now offer more flexibility and offshore allocation, making them attractive investments.Tax-free savings accounts offer tax-free growth, but contributions are not tax-deductible.For more valuable insights from the 10x team, click here.Have a question for Warren?
