NOTHIN' COMES EASY: The Life of Rodney Dangerfield (April 29, 2025) is the first biography of the "bug-eyed, sweaty, herky-jerky, tie-pulling comedian with the doleful countenance." Dangerfield's indelible beat-down image was played for laughs, but there were sad truths behind his sad-sack persona. TV writer Michael Seth Starr has crafted an immensely entertaining bio of the comedian's slog up the show business ladder. Ten years as a C-level stand-up comedian, he quit the business to sell aluminum siding and paint to keep the lights on. Then he went back to the clubs under an entirely new name, from Jack Roy to Rodney Dangerfield. A career-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show at the ripe age of forty-five would be the lucky break, opening doors to television, movies, and comic fame at last. His catch phrase, "I don't get no respect," underscored his circuitous rise to the top after years of setbacks and grit. "What stood out for me, in authoring this book," writes Starr, '"was Dangerfield's perseverance in the face of such overwhelming odds. I was impressed at how he launched a second comedy career as a man already in his forties and out of the game for a decade. He never abandoned his undeniable urge to get back in the game and to share his seemingly unending reservoir of magical one-liners." At the beginning of his comeback, he began writing jokes for comedians like Jackie Mason and Joey Bishop, in the days before the "no respect" persona was solidified. He worked agentless, making his own deals. And it took him a solid five years to clinch his now celebrated debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. It took another few years of hustling on the circuit before he landed on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, which opened a wealth of doors in Hollywood. Dangerfield's comedy style - a self-mocking angst, the comedy of the perpetual loser - was endearing and universal. He was the schlubby Everyman snubbed by life, finally making it big. Soon Dangerfield would be leaving his mark in films, most famously in Caddyshack and Back to School. He was rebuffed in later years by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - which refused him membership. But Dangerfield had already cemented his place in comedy history as a writer and performer. When he died in 2004, his death made international headlines. Among his pallbearers were George Carlin, Roseanne Barr, Chris Rock, Larry David, Andrew Dice Clay, Jon Lovitz, and Carl Reiner. The book closes with a highly engaging chapter, "Riffs on Rodney," with remembrances of the comic from his peers including Jay Leno, Rita Rudney, Bob Nelson, Robert Wuhl, and Pauly Shore. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

'Caddyshack', it turns out, is kind of a miracle of last-minute producer-led stitching together and salvaging, resulting in one of the more quotable films in comedy history.   Hard to believe that at the time, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield were not yet the massive film stars they'd become as a result of this movie.   This episode delves into the coke-fueled nonstop party that was this film's production, a production that would contribute to the untimely death of co-writer Doug Kenney on a cliff in Hawaii where he'd gone to dry out.  Doug's death was one of the first casualties of this scene due to drugs, soon followed by John Belushi's.

Dana and Tom with returning guest, Joe Boukhari (Instagram - I'll Get to It When I Get to It; Letterboxd Film Commentator - @bagodonuts) revisit Caddyshack (1980): written and directed by Harold Ramis with Douglas Kenney and Brian Doyle Murray, music by Johnny Mandel, cinematography by Stevan Larner, starring Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray.Plot Summary: Bushwood Country Club: an opulent haven for the wealthy, where life revolves around pristine greens, exclusivity, and egos so inflated they could double as golf carts. But underneath the facade of luxury lies a clash of worlds—working-class caddies and eccentric groundskeepers versus snobby elites—and it's about to get hilariously out of control.Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe), a young caddy striving to secure his future, finds himself entangled in the club's tangled hierarchy, navigating manipulative judges, raucous millionaires, and life lessons from Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), a laid-back golfer with pearls of wisdom that sound like they came from a Zen koan written by Groucho Marx. Meanwhile, Carl Spackler (Bill Murray), the quirky groundskeeper, engages in an escalating war with a gopher so cunning it could win a philosophy debate.Add in Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield), whose outlandish behavior becomes a catalyst for chaos, and Bushwood transforms into the backdrop for a wild satire of class division, absurd ambition, and the universal search for meaning—through golf, naturally. The result? A comedy that skewers pretense and celebrates the unpredictability of life, all while leaving the audience wondering how a gopher became the most unstoppable force in the universe.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome Back, Joe Boukhari02:42 Cast and Background for Caddyshack06:19 Relationship(s) with Caddyshack09:12 What is Caddyshack About?13:54 Status of Comedy in Film24:48 Plot Summary for Caddyshack26:36 Did You Know?28:29 First Break29:26 What's Up with Joe Boukhari?32:02 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy45:03 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance50:33 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty57:52 Second Break58:33 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:04:54 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:09:27 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:11:28 Remaining Questions for Caddyshack01:14:44 Thank You to Joe Boukhari and Remaining Thoughts01:18:17 CreditsGuest:Joe BoukhariInstagram - I'll Get to It When I Get to ItLetterboxd Film Commentator - @bagodonutsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the original episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/caddyshack-1980For more on the episode, go to:

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

OK, with golf season fully underway, it's time to salute Caddyshack, one of the classic 1980s comedy that featured the directorial debut of Harold Ramis, the big screen breakthrough for Rodney Dangerfield, some arrogant Ted Knight, some crazed Bill Murray and a lineage that drew heavily from both Saturday Night Live and the National Lampoon. Don't worry too much about the plot -- it's merely a launchpad for comedy bits galore. Whether you're a hacker, a duffer, or a scratch golfer, Caddyshack has something for you. And if you are a real big fan, you can watch it wearing your "William Murray" golf gear and finish with a pint at the "Murray Brothers Caddyshack Restaurant" (yes it's real). As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Caddyshack? Bill Murray has had far larger roles over time, but he makes the most of his Caddyshack persona Carl Spackler, a groundskeeper who is just a little, shall we say, disturbed. https://youtu.be/X48G7Y0VWW4?si=QGiCSvUEMJQYbGRo Chevy Chase has never been better than as Ty Webb, a pro-level golfer who smirks his way through life. Here are some of Chevy's best bits. https://youtu.be/Al3Yt5gxExY?si=CwIlxkEJFpXJIbTG Rodney Dangerfield was the perfect choice to play Al Czervik, a loud, crass, and hilarious "slob" dropped in the middle of a bunch of country club "snobs". Here Al tries to goad the arrogant Judge Smalls (a brilliant Ted Knight) into a slice. https://youtu.be/RrOhjHC28PQ?si=MFzVjclP0mKa6fxi

Before C-Lo's sports update (starting with his own Top 5), they discussed the Knicks' loss in Detroit (starters rested) and Wally Szczerbiak's post-game comments (featuring Al's "Boring" drops). C-Lo then covered the Masters' first day, including Gary Player's new girlfriend (he's 90) and amateur Jose Luis's creek incident. The hour ended with Gio noticing Jerry looking at Arizona real estate and a discussion about the time commitment of kids' athletics. Hour 2 Playoff Knicks opponents were discussed. The Mets and Yankees had recent afternoon games, making it feel like a long break. A caller questioned if the show is more relaxed without Boomer; Gio noted he sometimes avoids topics Boomer dislikes. They pondered how well the show members know each other (like a "Newlywed" game). C-Lo returned for his update, finding they don't know his kids' names. Kenny Albert reported on a Knicks-Pistons scuffle. At the Masters, Justin Thomas cursed after a bad shot, and Al questioned the free Masters app's extensive live coverage. The afternoon show went to the Islanders game where the Rangers scored 9 goals. The hour ended with Gio saying he'd be golfer Ludvig Aberg if he could wake up as any athlete. Hour 3 Gio debates drafting QB Jalen Milroe. He suggests drafting LB Abdul Carter for immediate impact, then Milroe later, emphasizing the Giants need wins and a QB plan for Daboll/Schoen to stay. Jerry prefers Sanders for his media handling skills and expects better Giants QB play than the Jets (despite no Jets QB draft talk). Before C-Lo's update, they discussed their guest bartending for the Boomer Esiason Foundation. C-Lo's update included the Knicks' physical loss to the Pistons, Masters day one, and Augusta's female members. The hour ended with the Browns signing Joe Flacco to their QB room with Kenny Pickett. Hour 4 Gio hosted a "Newlywed Game" between Al & Eddie to test their 17-year camaraderie. Before C-Lo's final update (following a discussion about the afternoon show requesting, not being invited to, the Islanders game), they recapped the Knicks' Detroit loss (featuring Kenny Albert's call) and Jim Nantz's story of acquiring Scottie Scheffler's old Yukon. In 1978, after Harold Ramis wrapped "Animal House", the director teamed up with pals Brian Doyle-Murray and Douglas Kenney, along with Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Ted Knight, and the one and only, Rodney Dangerfield, to bring similar frathouse shenanigans to the clubhouse. Featuring legendary performances (many of which were completely improvised) plus an equally memorable soundtrack, this 80s flick came barreling into theaters the summer of 1980, and went on to become one of the most cherished comedies of all time. Widely considered to be one of the all-time funniest comedies ever assembled, the film about a young golf caddy (Michael O'Keefe) desperate to win a scholarship and turn his life around has been listed #71 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs and #7 on AFI's Top 10 Sports Films. So grab your golf clubs, watch out for gopher holes, and remember to be the ball as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Nicolas Pepin and Chris McMichen discuss “Caddyshack” from 1980 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:Cindy Morgan revealed that the oil massage scene with Chevy Chase was entirely improvised. When Lacy exclaims, "You're crazy!" that was Morgan's authentic reaction to Chase dousing her with oil, which was also the case with Chase's reply, "That's what they said about the Son Of Sam.”Writer and producer Douglas Kenney died after the film was released. He fell off a cliff while vacationing in Hawaii. Kenney had experienced deep depression after the film's post-production, as much of the original story had been significantly altered in the editing room, and he was strongly opposed to the final addition of the gopher to the film.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/56693/15-things-you-might-not-know-about-caddyshackhttps://screenrant.com/caddyshack-movie-behind-scenes-making-of-trivia/Some sections were composed or edited by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! Enough about LIV and distance rules and slow play. It's time for golf's real burning questions: Why did Happy Gilmore qualify for the Tour after winning an 18-hole local in Waterbury? How did Roy McAvoy backspin a 3-wood off the green into the water? And is Caddyshack really the greatest golf movie of all time? We sit down with author Kyle Bandujo to discuss his book Movies with Balls, in which he and artist Rick Bryson apply true-life sports analysis to fictional sports stories, ranking the best accounts of the games we love. Why is golf so richly depicted in literature yet so rarely captured well on film? Kyle and host Tom Coyne go deep on golf movies and wander into controversial territory (Tom's take: Tin Cup is overrated) as they debate which golf films get it right, and which leave us wishing we'd watched Interstellar again instead.TGJ Podcast is presented by TitleistThe Golfer's Journal is proudly reader-supported since 2017. Of all the Saturday Night Live TV actors who have gone on to the movies, Bill Murray has had possibly the most fascinating, long lasting, unpredictable run.  Murray is complex, known equally for great performances, hilarious in-real life stunts, endless restlessness, and difficult personal behavior. Yet, very few actors have built up the reservoir of good will Murray has with his fans and the movie community due to his clear love of cinema. From early comedy hits like Caddyshack and Stripes to mid-period masterpieces like Groundhog Day to career reinvention with Rushmore, Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers, Bill Murray has always been pulled by a spiritually seeking restless voice to always keep it fresh and unpredictable. In this podcast, Secret Movie Club programmer Craig Hammill takes a look at  Bill Murray's career from his Second City & SNL start through his near 50 year career.

Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where each week we pull some movies off the shelf and recommend a few you might want to watch. This week's theme is sports comedies, specifically some great ones from the '80s that still hold up. If you're in the mood for underdogs, quirky characters, and a lot of laughs, these films should hit the spot. The Best of Times (1986)This one often flies under the radar, but it shouldn't. Starring Robin Williams and Kurt Russell, it's a heartfelt comedy about reliving past mistakes and trying to rewrite history on a small-town football field. Williams plays a guy still hung up on a dropped pass from years ago, and Russell is the former star quarterback who gets roped into a plan to replay the game. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, the movie balances humor with some surprisingly emotional moments. Major League (1989)A classic baseball comedy about a ragtag Cleveland Indians team that's supposed to fail but manages to surprise everyone. Charlie Sheen stars as “Wild Thing” Rick Vaughn, a pitcher with a blazing fastball and no control, alongside a great ensemble cast including Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes, and Rene Russo. Directed by David S. Ward, the film has a sharp sense of humor but also doesn't shy away from celebrating the game itself. The film was so beloved it sparked two sequels, though neither quite captured the charm of the original.Caddyshack (1980)What's a sports comedy list without Caddyshack? Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie redefined the genre with its irreverent humor and unforgettable cast, including Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray. Set at a country club golf course, it's less about the game and more about the absurd characters and their crazy antics. One of my favorite characters, the gopher puppet, was added late in production and ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the film. If you haven't seen it or haven't watched it in a while, it's always worth revisiting.Wildcats (1986)Goldie Hawn leads this football comedy as Molly McGrath, a high school track coach who takes on the challenge of coaching a boys' varsity football team in a rough neighborhood. The film has a lot of charm, mostly thanks to Hawn's performance, which balances humor with just enough seriousness to make you root for her and the team. It's also an early film for Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who both went on to major careers. This was a great cable TV comedy and I watched it dozen of time on HBO and still bought in on VHS.That's the lineup for this week: The Best of Times, Major League, Caddyshack, and Wildcats. Each one brings something a little different to the table, but they all share a love for sports and comedy. Let me know what you think, and if there's a movie you'd like me us recommend, leave us a comment. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Send us a textMy generation was one of the first to grow up in front of a TV Screen. I guess that's not necessarily a thing to brag about, but it was true. Saturday morning cartoons were a big deal for me. I would get up early and grab a big bowl of overly sugared breakfast cereal and settle down in front of the massive console TV in our basement for about 4 hours of formative brainwashing. That means my comedy sense tends to come from Loony Tunes.Or at least it started with Loony Tunes. Bugs Bunny make that wrong turn at Albuquerque always left me in stitches. As I grew up my comedic sense grew as well and the next bit of comedy gold that became my favorite was The Monkees. Mixing music with laughs was right up my alley. Follow that with my all time favorite, the Muppet Show (which I own on Blue-Ray by the way) and you can get a fair idea of my formative years. In my teens I started to watch all of those comedies I wasn't supposed to watch. Comedies like Our Man Flint, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Caddyshack, and of course Porky's. And of course once I reached that milestone of adult hood I became enamored with the darker comedies like Raising Arizona and The Big Labowski. Finally lets not forget that my generation was the one that really started the Big Comedy Concerts. Richard Pryor: Live and Smoking, Eddie Murphy's Raw, and George Carlin's You are All Diseased. They were all funny irreverent, and outlandish. What does this have to do with roleplaying you might ask?In every group I have ever roleplayed with, Comedy has been important. Whether it's just a player breaking up a tense scene, or specifically including outlandish and slapstick situations for fun. Comedy plays a roll.In this episode Christina and I are going to talk about the Comedy Genre. About it's important elements and how it can add to your roleplaying games.Christina, you've heard about the comedy that entertained me growing up, What about you?[Kick to Christina]

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, The Buffalo Bills and Sabres had separate social media posts commemorating events that fans absolutely tore into inside the comments, and Patrick Moran reads many of them off, some hilariously funny and others downright mean. Terry and Kim Pegula just past the 10 year mark as owners of the Bills, while Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams celebrated his 50th birthday. Both were acknowledged via posts by their respective social media departments. Predictably, annoyed/angry fans got at them, spewing comments that range from comical to borderline cringe. Patrick decided today was a good day to something different and essentially dedicate an entire episode reading off several of the comments. Among them on the Pegula side is fans urging him/them to sell the team, accusing him of ruining Josh Allen's team, funding a stadium on the state's dime, being an absentee owner and a really good reference from the movie Caddyshack. That's nothing compared to Adams, who had people saying they hoped his birthday sucked, wondering if he had a party with the millions of cap space the Sabres still have, wanting him Robert Saleh'd, accused of having his thumb up his butt and someone who simply used a middle finger emoticon instead of saying Happy Birthday. All that and more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices. Here's Julie's list of favorite sports movies. A League of Their Own This is a Satellite Sister Solid Gold choice. This movie has everything: sisters, baseball, Geena Davis, Rosie O”Donnell, Madonna in center field, and Tom Hanks telling the players,” there's no crying in baseball”. Bend It Like Beckham A wonderful coming of age/cultural assimilation/girl power story about Jess Bijam who wants to play soccer like her idol, David Beckham but struggles to respect her traditional Indian family values. And, hello, Keira Knightley plays Jess's friend and David Beckham makes a cute cameo. Bull Durham It's hard to pick my favorite baseball movie but the kitchen scene with Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner makes Bull Durham my top pick. The movie is about baseball in a very deep way but also has breezy romantic comedy.  Rocky I loved the original Rocky. It's the ultimate underdog movie and has one of the best theme songs ever. Also, Talia Shire shines in the film.  Hoop Dreams An excellent documentary following two young Chicago basketball prospects trying to use their athletic talents to get to a better life. The two stars face racism, poverty, injury and other roadblocks trying to make their dreams come true. The film left me in tears.  Friday Night Lights Watch the original movie with clear eyes and a full heart. Before there was Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor, there was Billy Bob Thornton and Tim McGraw in a film that follows the coach and players of a high school football team in Odessa, Texas. As a transplant, I am beginning to appreciate what Friday night football means to Texas communities. The film is as much about Texas culture as it is about football.  Bad News Bears Haven't we all been on a team for work or play where you feel like a group of misfits or outcasts? This is a movie about kids who never expect to care about competing or winning. Tatum O'Neal is the 11-year old star pitcher. Walter Matthau as an alcoholic ex-baseball pitcher turned coach is perfect. The ending involves a championship game and a big celebration for the Bears.   Liz's sport movie faves include Robert Redford in Downhill Racer and Bill Murray in Caddyshack! Plus Without Limits, a great T&F movie with Billy Crudup as Steve Prefontaine and Donald Sutherland as Coach Bill Bowerman Lian names the great cycling flick Breaking Away and The Cutting Edge, a skating rom-com that does the sport proud.
