Welcome to B The Way Forward Interludes - a series of conversations that don't necessarily fit in our regular season, but are just too good to not share. This week, a very special episode for Women's History Month.  Telle Whitney was already a trailblazing woman in the field of semiconductors when she moved to  Silicon Valley in the 1980s. Anita Borg had already made a name for herself in systems. The two met at a party and became fast friends. Among all the things they bonded over was, of course, their shared experiences as women in tech. And the ways they both tried to deal with the glaring disparity between men and women in the industry. But Anita and Telle weren't content to just commiserate. They were determined to do something about it. Out of that determination and that friendship, the Grace Hopper Celebration and the Institute for Women and Technology - which became AnitaB.org - were born. Anita Borg and Tell Whitney saw a need and decided  to do something about it - and the tech space would never be the same.  Telle - Co-Founder of AnitaB.org and Brenda's predecessor as President and CEO - pulls back the curtain on the early days of AnitaB.org, the secret origin of Anita's pioneering networking group Systers, and what it was like at the very first GHC in 1994. Plus, Telle helps us get to know who Anita Borg was in the ways only a close friend can. For from of Telle and her work check her out... Today is Tuesday, September 24th and Happy heavenly Birthday to Jim Henson. ***09.24.24 – BIRTHDAY – JIM HENSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Marietta to Consider Lifting Pit Bull, Rottweiler Ban Red Cross says Blood Donors Needed Now to Help Combat Critical Need GHC to Add bachelor's in digital media in Fall 2025 All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA (06.26.24 CU OF GA FREE CHECKING_REV_FINAL) STORY 1:  Marietta to Consider Lifting Pit Bull, Rottweiler Ban The Marietta City Council is considering lifting the ban on pit bulls and Rottweilers in off-leash dog parks. Currently, these breeds are prohibited, unlike in nearby areas where restrictions focus on aggressive behavior rather than specific breeds. Councilmember Cheryl Richardson, a Rottweiler owner, advocates for this change, arguing that aggression is not breed-specific. Some residents, like Corinne Shanahan, agree, noting that issues often arise from owner behavior rather than breed. However, concerns remain about enforcement and safety, with some council members, including Chairman Johnny Walker, opposing the change due to safety concerns. The council will vote on the proposal in an upcoming meeting. STORY 2:     Red Cross: Blood Donors Needed Now to Help Combat Critical Need The American Red Cross is urging blood and platelet donations to stabilize the critical blood supply, especially from type O donors and first-time donors. Only 3% of Americans donate, yet donations are vital for patients needing transfusions. Donors by September 30 receive a $15 e-gift card, and those donating in October can get a $10 Amazon gift card and a chance to win a $5,000 gift card. Numerous local blood drives are scheduled, including at the Cobb Blood Donation Center and various community locations. Visit RedCrossBlood.org for more details and to make an appointment. STORY 3:  GHC to Add Bachelor's in Digital Media in Fall 2025 Georgia Highlands College will introduce a Bachelor of Science in Digital Media and Communication in fall 2025, marking its 10th baccalaureate degree. This program, part of the School of Humanities, is designed to prepare students for careers in the digital media and communication fields, focusing on skills like production, market research, branding, and social media analytics. Graduates can pursue roles in media, public relations, event planning, and more, with opportunities for entrepreneurship. The program offers flexible learning options, including online and hybrid courses, and students can start classes as early as this spring. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Cobb County) STORY 4:  Cobb Schools to Fund 150 More Graduate Degrees for Educators The Cobb County School District will expand its Georgia's BEST Program by adding 150 more educators next year, funding their graduate degrees at no cost. Launched in February 2023, the program has already invested over $1.15 million and accepted 750 staff members. In partnership with the University of West Georgia, it is open to full-time, certified district employees. The program aims to enhance educator retention, improve educational quality, and offer higher salary opportunities. The new cohort will begin in January 2025. For more details, visit CobbK12.org. STORY 5:  Cobb Eyes New Roadkill Pickup Program Commissioner Keli Gambrill proposes a new roadkill pickup incentive program for Cobb's Animal Services, allocating $100,000 from her contingency fund. The program would pay animal services employees bonuses for pickups outside regular hours, saving costs compared to contractors. Employees would earn $20 per non-deer and $25 per deer pickup. This initiative aims to improve response times and reduce reliance on less reliable contractors. The program addresses increasing roadkill reports, especially in rural areas like west Cobb. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will discuss this proposal in their upcoming meeting. We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 9 (Ingles Markets (What To Add To Diets) 9 STORY 6:  14-Year-Old in Custody After South Cobb High Shooting A 14-year-old is in custody for a shooting at South Cobb High School during a community event on Saturday night. The suspect faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury and is expected to recover. The incident occurred during a football game, though it was not a district-sponsored event. Cobb County School Board member Leroy Tre' Hutchins advocates for enhanced safety measures at all school events. The firearm has been recovered, but details on how the suspect obtained it remain undisclosed. The investigation is ongoing. STORY 7:    Flower Show at North Georgia State Fair The North Georgia State Fair has kicked off with its first annual flower show, featuring over 386 horticultural displays in Building B, alongside Arts & Crafts and Baked Goods competitions. Ribbons for the largest pumpkin and other categories were awarded on September 18. The shows are organized by the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Marietta Garden Council, judged by National Garden Club judges. Holly Walquist and Dorothy Dowell lead the event, supported by volunteers. Williams was speeding at 67 mph in a 35 mph zone on Humphries Hill Road in Austell when he lost control of his vehicle, colliding with a Toyota 4Runner. Eunice Gyasi, a passenger in the 4Runner who was nine months pregnant, gave birth to a baby girl, Evangela Gyasi, who died 28 minutes later due to injuries from the crash. Williams, with a blood alcohol content of 0.156, was booked into Cobb County Jail without bond. STORY 2: Georgia appellate court sets October hearing in Trump's bid to disqualify DA Willis The Georgia Court of Appeals will not hear former President Donald Trump's appeal regarding Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis's role in his election interference case until October. This delay ensures the trial will occur post the November 5 election. Trump's legal team sought Willis's removal due to her past romantic relationship with attorney Nathan Wade, who led the prosecution. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ruled Willis could stay if Wade resigned, which he did. Trump, indicted last August with 18 others, faces multiple charges across federal and state levels, including a recent New York conviction for falsifying business records. STORY 3: New Agreement Between UWG and GHC for Health Students The University of West Georgia (UWG) and Georgia Highlands College (GHC) have partnered to offer health and wellness students an accelerated path to a Master of Science in Integrative Health and Wellness (MSIHW) degree. This program, approved by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), enables GHC students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health Science to take graduate-level courses at UWG during their final undergraduate semester. Successful students will gain automatic admission to the MSIHW program at UWG, preparing them for roles in healthcare teams or community-based programs. This initiative aims to address the growing need for healthcare professionals in the region.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The second, due to vandalism, released 4,100 gallons into a tributary of the Timber Ridge Branch on June 1. The third, caused by grease, spilled 660 gallons into the same tributary on June 2. Cleanup for all spills involved spreading lime. For further details, contact the Cobb County Water System's Maintenance Division at 770-419-6351. STORY 5: Developer Proposing 5-Story Student Housing Tower Near KSU Landmark Properties, an Athens-based developer, seeks approval to build a five-story, 191-unit apartment building for Kennesaw State University students at 112 Townpark Drive. The gated complex will feature a parking deck with 665 spaces, a rooftop pool, and an amenity area. The developer requests rezoning and a special land-use permit. However, the Bells Ferry Civic Association opposes the project, citing an existing surplus of off-campus housing and potential traffic issues. The Cobb Planning Commission will review the proposal on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta. We'll be back in a moment    Break: INGLES 9 STORY 6: Kim McCoy Named Director of Cobb Family Advocacy Center Kim McCoy has been appointed the first executive director of the new Cobb Family Advocacy Center, announced by Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. McCoy, formerly the director of the DA's Victim Witness Unit, proposed the center to serve victims of various forms of abuse. In conversation with Elsabe Boshoff, Samrawit Getaneh and Nastasia Thebaud-Bouillon-Njenga This is a podcast series brought to you by the HRDA Alumni Task Force on Climate Justice and Rights of Future Generations in Africa, hosted under the Africa Rights Talk – Centre for Human Rights podcast. The initial aim is to produce a limited series of six podcasts that form a coherent whole, introducing some of the main challenges related to climate change and human rights in Africa. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the financial support of the European Union through the Global Campus for Human Rights. In this podcast episode, the two speakers, Elsabe Boshoff and Samrawit Getaneh, discuss on how climate change disproportionately affects children in Africa, and the interlinkages between multiple systematic inequalities affecting girls and boys in their diversity. They also touch on the responsibilities of African states as duty bearers with regard to ensuring the whole range of children's human rights in the context of a changing climate. Samrawit elaborates on the negative impacts of climate change due to their physical and cognitive levels of development. She highlights how children bear the brunt of the impact of anthropogenic GHC emissions. Samrawit further stresses that girls are particularly impacted by the effects of climate change, given the gender norms that affect their roles, such as helping with household chores. Elsabe reflects on the urgency to tackle climate-related challenges in Africa based on the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) that has projected that around 125 million children could be subjected to the consequences of climate change by 2030, through displacement, water scarcity and malnutrition, which all impact on the health of the child. In addition, Elsabe points out the impacts of heatwaves on pregnant women and their fetuses, which include delayed brain development in unborn children, resulting in educational attainment and work outcomes later in life. Finally, both speakers zoom in on some recommendations such as children empowerment and more engagement from state members. Children can be empowered to share their views on climate-related issues that directly affect them. These are through child parliaments where children get the opportunity to debate on important issues on the national agenda. It is also important that African state parties engage more with the Working Group on Children's Rights and Climate Change under the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (African Committee). A long-awaited overhaul of the Defense Department's system for moving military members' household goods from place to place will be delayed yet again — and for a still-undetermined period of time, officials said Thursday. Unlike previous setbacks, the latest stumbling block isn't related to the numerous legal challenges that have faced the Global Household Goods contract (GHC), which is worth up to $17.9 billion over nine years. This time, IT integration problems are to blame. Officials at U.S. Transportation Command first noticed the issues during an initial round of IT testing in August, and they first believed the bulk of them would be resolved by the end of 2023. But integrating the government's systems with the new ones being built by HomeSafe, the winner of the new household goods contract, turned out to be even more complex than it first appeared. Developer 5th Street Capital Partners plans to transform the 327-unit motel into a 307-unit apartment complex. The motel, known for criminal activity, has been a frequent location for law enforcement calls. The developer aims to improve the property's curb appeal and reduce crime through renovations and enhanced security measures. The apartments will target young working singles and seniors, and rents will range from $1,200 to $1,400 per month. The commission also recommended that the developer create a program to assist displaced residents during the conversion process.     STORY 5: amazon   A former manager at Amazon's Smyrna warehouse, Kayricka Wortham, has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for defrauding the company of nearly $10 million. Wortham, along with her co-conspirators, submitted fictitious invoices for fake vendors, causing Amazon to pay out approximately $9.4 million. Wortham used her position of authority to approve these invoices and directed the fraudulent proceeds to bank accounts controlled by her and her associates. She pleaded guilty to fraud charges and was found guilty in November. The scheme involved multiple individuals, including Wortham's partner, Brittany Hudson. The responsibility of addressing unacceptable behavior by spectators now falls under game administration. Another change allows the use of a one-way communication device between a coach in the dugout and the team's catcher for calling pitches, while prohibiting communication with other players on defense or while batting. Additionally, the use of non-electronic wristbands and pitchers' cards with specific game information has been approved, with guidelines for their appearance.
