In 2004, Green Day were in a bit of an existential crisis. It had been a decade since Dookie went Diamond in the US and platinum around the world and their appearance at Woodstock 94 helped propel them to one of the biggest bands of their generation. And while big hits and successful tours followed throughout the 90s, I can understand that it's hard to find things to rebel against when your rich and famous. Their 2000 album Warning didn't light the world on fire and then their next attempt at a new album was scuttled once the master tapes were stolen. It would have been easy for Green Day to call it day at that point. However, Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool decided to create a concept album that points out the lies and perils associated with chasing the American Dream against the backdrop of a neo-conservative government leading us into wars without justification. It follows the story of a young man from suburbia who wants out but finds that his dream of the big city is fraught with peril. And through all his trials and tribulations he manages to find love and the realization that maybe all wasn't so bad back in his hometown. But just because it's a concept album doesn't mean it's without radio friendly hits as it boasts chart toppers like Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and The Wolf's favorite - Holiday. They have prog-like nine minute epics with different pieces which would rival those of YES and incredibly brilliant lyrics from Billy Joe against some of the best riffs of the era. No matter your side of the political spectrum, American Idiot will grab you sonically and then pull you in with intelligent lyrics that reflected what America was becoming and warning about things we see coming to pass today. It's an amazing album from a time when rock bands weren't given much press but Green Day still managed to not only make their masterpiece but have it celebrated all over the world. Green Day were in Philadelphia on August 9th for a tour that's celebrating 30 years of 'Dookie' and 20 years of 'American Idiot.' They played both of those albums in their entirety, plus a ton of hits and a few new songs, too (36 in all!).  Backstage at Citizens Bank Park, in an extended conversation with Pierre Robert, Tré Cool talks about Green Day's place in pop culture, from their link to Deadpool & Wolverine to working alongside Mark Hamill in new video for "Corvette Summer." He shares stories of drumming alongside not one, but two Beatles, plus the time he jammed with Willie Nelson: "Willie's asking you to play drums; who cares how high you are?!" Tré also reflected on the way that Green Day's audience has grown up with them, and how the band are feeling better - and closer - than ever before. And it's clear that they love coming back to Philly, as they've been doing faithfully since '93. Take it from Tré: "It's nice to be on America's finest, curated-by-hand rock and roll radio station: WMMR!" By the time the new millennium arrived, Green Day were thriving as one of the world's biggest rock bands. The ‘90s had been good to the band. After years of building a following as an independent act, in 1994 the trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt signed to a major label and released their third album, Dookie.  To just about everyone's surprise, Dookie became a cultural phenomenon, bringing punk rock back to life in the mainstream, winning the band's first Grammy Award, allowing them to steal the show at Woodstock ‘94, and go on to sell 20 million copies.  It is credited as an influence on everyone from Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy, to Sum 41 and even Billie Eilish, who has said “growing up, there was no band more important to me.” But, after fulfilling all of their commitments in 2002, Green Day were at a standstill. The band met up and questioned whether they wanted to even keep going anymore. While their personal lives were in shambles, the band's existence was on the verge of crumbling. One idea Green Day decided to pursue was a radical one, based on a dream Armstrong had of writing a punk rock “‘Bohemian Rhapsody' of the future.” That song would eventually become “Jesus of Suburbia,” which helped shake up the foundations of the band and push them into a brave new world.  From that point on, Green Day had begun writing a full-on rock opera. Even better: the first ever PUNK ROCK opera. Green Day announced that their seventh album would be called American Idiot. Released as the album's first single, “American Idiot” wasted no time declaring Green Day's mission: to address their sociopolitical concerns and kick-off their new punk rock opera opus with three minutes of politically-charged fire. North Star Journey
When 'Chocolate Rain' ruled the internet: Anti-racism song captured Minneapolis and beyond

North Star Journey

It was 2007. MySpace was the largest social media platform. Netscape's Navigator was one of the most popular web browsers. And Adam Nyerere Bahner, a 25-year-old, biracial Minneapolis man captivated the growing audience of a new app called YouTube.YouTube was just two years old. And “Chocolate Rain,” the name of Bahner's musical composition about racism against Black Americans, was also a de facto beta test for the new app's capabilities.Bahner, who was studying at the University of Minnesota at the time, chose a stage name from a Google search — one with zero hits that was also easy to spell. The newly minted Tay Zonday was overwhelmed by sudden fame from the new platform.“There wasn't a playbook to use for what to do when your viral video leads to mainstream attention being covered by John Mayer and Tre Cool [drummer in Green Day] and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel and all of these other things that happened very quickly in succession,” said Bahner who responded to a series of written questions. While Minnesota did gain a bit more musical fame because of “Chocolate Rain,” it's not Bahner's home and he doesn't think it's appropriate to be mentioned in the same breath as local legends like Prince.“Chocolate Rain,” he says, was not inspired by “Purple Rain.”“While I do have family in Minneapolis and I did visit as a child, I mainly lived there 2004 through 2008, then lived in Los Angeles for 12-and-a-half years and have since been in Seattle for more than two years.”The music and lyrics of “Chocolate Rain” are what stood out the most to Jill Sondergaard. These days, Sondergaard is a part-time gospel vocalist and owner of JMS Consulting. She says the rhythm and lyrics appealed to her musical sensibilities.“As the daughter of a drummer, I was just like, ‘Wow, this is so unique.' All the time he would say ‘Chocolate Rain' and the lyrics were following.”Sondergaard said her first thought was, ‘Is this a parody?' And then she listened more closely to the lyrics. Chocolate rain / Raised your neighborhood insurance ratesChocolate rain / Makes us happy ‘livin in a gateChocolate rain / Made me cross the street the other dayChocolate rain / Made you turn your head the other way “It's so relevant and poignant and it just gets everything in there,” she said. “He's really dipping into a lot of things in life and it's related to systemic and institutional racism.”Those kinds of reactions helped ‘Chocolate Rain' rack up 136 million views; get ranked as the hottest video in the summer of 2007 and win the 2008 YouTube Award in its music category. Bahner doesn't take his success too seriously. And he says it's OK and probably advisable that people turn off social media from time to time. He says YouTube used to be about novelty. Now, Bahner says, it's about attracting a loyal audience that will watch as much as possible.  “And, that's not necessarily healthy for society,” he said. “It locks us inside individual bias confirmation bubbles instead of connecting us through common reality.”Bahner is now 41 and over the last several years has lent his rich baritone to voiceover acting and commercial narration. According to his ‘Tay Zonday' IMDB site, Bahner has had roles in dozens of productions, including voicing the character Masked Fishy in “Baby Shark's Big Show!” an animated kid's show on Noggin.Bahner has not lived in the Twin Cities for more than a decade. However, he has fond recollections of the 2000's-era art scene in Minneapolis. Bahner said, for example, the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater and the Fringe Festival helped foster a sense of community he hadn't experienced in other places. “There are ways in which the cultural space of independent art in the Twin Cities is supportive of the zany and the marginalized and maybe that had an impact on me,” he said. “I'm not sure I had an impact on it.” "Chocolate Rain" Original Song by Tay Zonday

Tracks are drawn from Dookie through to Revolution Radio and it was a fun listen and review throughout.   As a result, there is a fairly nice Joel's Revenge - or is it? What the Riff?!?

Although Dookie is the third studio album by Green Day, it is their first release on a major label.  This may explain some of their seemingly overnight stardom.  The trio consisted of Billie Joe Armstrong on vocals and lead, Mike Dirnt on bass and backing vocals, and Tre Cool on percussion, and they had been in the underground scene in the San Francisco Bay area since before 1988 (Tre Cool replaced original drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990).  The band changed their original name from Sweet Baby to Green Day, a slang phrase for spending the day smoking cannabis.  Dookie was recorded in three weeks, and was a major commercial success, helped along by extensive airplay of the band's videos on MTV. It was also a critical success, and the group won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 1995.  Dookie remains Green Day's best selling album. The music is considered punk revivalist or "power punk", and you can see the influence of early punk groups like the Ramones and the Clash.  However, the band has also cited bands like the Who and Cheap Trick as influences as well.  Green Day is considered one of the groups that made punk go mainstream in the 1990's.  Billie Joe Armstrong wrote most of the tracks on the album, following themes from his personal history including anxiety, sex, and even boredom.  Consistent with the punk genre, most songs are quite short and very fast. LongviewThe first single off the album is about boredom and lack of motivation.  It is about a day spent sitting around the house, doing nothing of importance.  "I sit around and watch the tube, but nothing's on."SheA deeper cut, this track was released as the fifth and final single.  The song is about Armstrong's former girlfriend who showed him a feminist poem with an identical title.  Armstrong then wrote the lyrics of "She" and showed them to her, though she dumped him later on.  The song is notorious for a concert where Armstrong performed the song nude.Welcome to ParadiseThe song was originally on their second album, but re-recorded for this album.  The song is about a runaway who is living on the streets.  Armstrong temporarily moved into a rat-infested warehouse in a bad neighborhood, but the rent was a low $50 per month.  Much of his experience in that dump was the inspiration for this track. When I Come AroundThis was the fourth and biggest-selling single from the album, though more mellow than most.  It is about Armstrong knowing a girlfriend is mad and wants to break up, and Armstrong deciding to just staying away from the drama until it blows over.  He would go on to marry her in real life. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:All For Love by Bryan Adams, featuring Sting and Rod Stewart (from the motion picture "The Three Musketeers")Three musical stars team up to provide this theme for the motion picture "The Three Musketeers." STAFF PICKS:Spinning Around Over You by Lenny KravitzRob starts us with a groovy staff pick from Lenny Kravitz' third studio album.  Kravitz was born in New York City to a TV producer dad and actress mom.  His home was a mixture of black and white, Christian and Jewish.  The family moved to L.A. when his Roxie Roker (his mom) landed a role in "The Jeffersons" Rock 'N' Roll Dreams Come Through by Meat LoafBruce's staff pick is the third single from the album "Bat Out of Hell II:  Back Into Hell."  Jim Steinman wrote it and released it on his album "Bad for Good" in 1981.  Both the Steinman version and the Meat Loaf version were top 40-hits, with Steinman's version going to number 32 and the Meat Loaf version going to number 13.  It is a rock anthem about how rock and roll gets you through tough times.Having a Party by Rod StewartBrian brings us an unplugged cover from Sam Cook.  Ronnie Wood (the Rolling Stones, Faces, the Jeff Beck group) is playing guitar on this track.  Stewart sticks quite faithfully to the original, and he would continue to focus on a crooner style in his later days.Laid by JamesWayne finishes us off with the Manchester sound.  The song is about a ruinous relationship that the guy just can't give up.  "My therapist said not to see you no more.  She said you're like a disease without any cure.  She said I'm so obsessed that I'm becoming a bore, oh no!" INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sabrosa by Beastie BoysWe finish off with a tasty, jazzy instrumental from the Beastie Boys.  "Sabrosa" means "tasty" in Spanish.

We're talking Green Day's massive album, American Idiot. Is it a concept album? Does labelling an album a concept album automatically make it better than if it was not a concept album? We're joined by our friend Tom to figure out if Green Day actually took that much of a political risk with this album and if cramming two songs on one track when they don't flow together at all is a smart move. I've tried to write this as a neutral but I've never understood Green Day. Tre Cool is one of my least favourite musicians, but hey, Tom and Benjii liked 'em so let's hear them out. I was never sentient to Dookie. My first interaction with a Green Day CD ended in heartbreak so maybe I'm biased. Is it me who is wrong, no, it's the kids.
