Released in early 2018, their debut single “Sexy Whale Beach Party”, produced by Aidan Hogg (WAAX, Landings) and mixed by Miro Mackie (Cold War Kids, St. Vincent, Bishop Briggs), received much love from community radio and is the perfect introduction into the Whalehouse world. Tropical Fuck Storm. TFS is what some would consider an Australian supergroup, consisting of Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin (The Drones), Lauren Hammel (High Tension) and Erica Dunn (Harmony/Palm Springs). The band made their live debut across the US in late 2017 supporting Band Of Horses and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. They take the 3 minute punk burner and stretch it past breaking point. Their first show was in 2015, playing a backyard in Melbourne as part of the inaugural Wetfest, an annual gig that showcases some of the best emerging women-led and gender non-conforming acts from the Melbourne music scene. Since then they have given us a handful of 7 inches before signing with Poison City Records and releasing their debut self titled long player in 2017. They have since followed up with another 7” through Poison City titled Tell Them Where To Go/Choking To Choose in early 2018 as well as touring hard across the country. Durban Poison is a finger in the face of conformity.“Amongst the iconic South African Cities, Durban is the ugly sister, less beautiful than Cape Town and poorer than Johannesburg, but this edgy industrial city, near the beach and by the country, is in its own way beautiful amongst the sisters, she’s the keeper.”Poison City is a lifestyle brand built around Durban and its surfing lifestyle.Poison City: Holger talks to Graeme "Surfing" Bird from Poison City Brewing about what makes Durban famous: Is it the harbour, Johnny’s Chip & Cheese Roti's, no it's Surfing and the Rebel Lifestyle.Graeme wants to creating a brand that makes Durban proud.Poison City brewed their first beer, The Bird Lager, with Sean and Paul at That Brewing Company, the second beer, The Punk Rocker, an English Pale Ale with Jason at Toti Brewing Company, then The Kiff, a Belgian Wit with Shaun Standeaven and then The Other Bird, a Czech Dark Lager, which was developed by Czech brewing veteran Ladislav Vesely. Next up is the Wedge, an American style, Imperial Pale Ale, and then when the time is right, Graeme is planning to launch a mass market beer, called Durban Poison.Lessons from Kevin Hedderwick, from Famous Brands, etcPoison City beers are available in over 100 outlets in Kzn and over 200 nationally, e.g. Tops at Spar, Beerhouse, Republik, Bananjam, etcTo catch Graeme’s story subscribe to my podcast subscribe on Android or on iTunes
A dislocated shoulder and a few happy accidents lead a punk part-timer into the role of the lifetime - the driving force of The Smith Street Band, who have evolved into one of the country's most respected and beloved contemporary rock bands. Chris Cowburn might not be up-front - either literally or figuratively - but he's been a part of the band since its formation, and has also moved into various managerial roles as well as founding his own label, Jackknife Music. At the top of another national tour, Chris shared his tales of unexpected European shenanigans, finding a home in Poison City and taking the world on one sweaty club show at a time. The Smith Street Band have just released a new single, "I Scare Myself Sometimes," featuring the vocals of Lucy Wilson of The Sugarcanes. The 7-inch can be purchased via Poison City Records here: http://poisoncityestore.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-smith-street-band-i-scare-myself-sometimes-7 The band end their national tour with a show tonight in Byron Bay and two sets at the Yours & Owls Festival in Wollongong on the 3rd and the 4th.
