If you live in an area where it snows regularly in the winter months, you know the key is preparation. Most families have a shovel or two, and these days, many have a snow blower. Plus, it's also essential to keep some ice melt handy. There are several varieties of sidewalk salt, but even though we often deal with icy sidewalks here in Middle Tennessee, it's usually hard to find. We make sure to pick up a bag when we visit family in Indiana. But there's one big problem. Since we don't get severe weather very often, the salt can last for long periods. And while that sounds like a good thing, it's not... Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two leading lights of modern psychedelic indie-rock, Melody Prochet and Lila Ramani. Prochet is the creative force behind Melody's Echo Chamber, whose evocative name is taken from a dream she once had. Her debut album under the name, which Prochet recorded with help from Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, was released in 2012. She has since released two more full-lengths while bouncing around the planet and raising children. The new one, Emotional Eternal, was partly inspired by Prochet's move from Paris to the idyllic quiet of the Swiss Alps. It features assists from members of the Swedish band Dungen, though it's more spare and stripped down than that might suggest—and more spare than her past work, too. There are bits of psych in there, along with echoes of bands like Stereolab. Lila Ramani of the New York band Crumb shares some of those influences, and Melody Prochet's music influenced what Ramani wanted to do in her band, too. Crumb got going while its members were still in college in 2016, but really picked up speed with their debut full length, Jinx, which came out in 2019. Crumb released a second album, Ice Melt, in 2021, further incorporating jazzy rhythms into their psychedelic stew. In this conversation, the mutual admirers talk about their personal lives, including Prochet's side gig as an art therapist as well as Ramani's childhood growing up near the Gowanus Canal. They chat about Coachella, “grinding vs floating,” and Prochet's favorite American city—which will almost certainly surprise you. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Melody Prochet and Lila Ramani for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please subscribe to Talkhouse on your favorite platform, and tell your friends that we're the best. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time! View the full transcript of this podcast here.

In this episode of Shaping The Future, I am speaking to climate scientist Professor James Renwick, about the scale of the risks posed by the melting of the East and West Antarctic ice sheets due to human emissions from our relentless burning of fossil fuels. Sea-level rise is the most obvious impact that will destroy cities around the world but there are also other less obvious impacts on agriculture and population displacement that can also lead to conflict if we choose to continue to do nothing. James is based at Victoria University in New Zealand specialising in large-scale climate variations and was awarded the Prime Ministers Science prize by Jacinda Ardern in 2018. Thanks for listening to Shaping The Future. AntiFreeze Ethylene Glycol Ethylene glycol is the primary active ingredient in antifreeze – the same product that prevents the water in your car’s radiator from freezing. Ethylene glycol is extremely toxic, and it has been implicated in the deaths of countless dogs and cats. Part of the problem with ethylene glycol is its sweet taste, which many animals find quite appealing. Ingestion of ethylene glycol (EG/antifreeze) is a true emergency, as it can result in acute kidney failure and death. Please seek emergency treatment if you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze. Ethylene glycol (EG) is a clear, odorless water soluble liquid used most typically in antifreeze solution. It is also used as an industrial solvent in the manufacture of detergents, paints and lacquers, polishes and other compounds. Most anti-freeze solutions contain upwards of 95% of Ethylene Glycol (EG). Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning include: Depression or confusion Walking strangely or staggering (Drunken behavior) Seizures Extreme thirstiness Frequent urination and vomiting Diarrhea Rapid heart beat Dangers of Ice Melt for Pets 1. Skin Irritation Many ice-melting products can irritate your dog’s skin. This is typically a problem that is caused by ice-melt products that contain salts, such as calcium chloride or magnesium chloride, but propylene glycol is also a very common skin irritant for people, and it may cause damage to your dog’s skin too. The irritation caused by ice melt products primarily occurs on the paws, as they typically experience the most direct contact with the ice However, any portion of your dog’s skin can become irritated after walking on salt-covered roads. In some cases, ice melt products can even irritate your dog’s mucous membranes, including the eyes and nose. The severity of the irritation caused by ice melt products varies from one circumstance to the next. Some ice-melt products are gentler on canine skin than others, some dogs are simply more sensitive to these products than others, and the amount of contact dogs have with the product will vary. In mild cases, pups with irritated paws will simply appear to walk a little gingerly and lick their paws more than usual. In severe cases, the skin and pads may become very red, or even crack and bleed. This may prevent your dog from walking much at all. 2. Ingestion Hazard Skin and paw irritation are certainly no fun for your pup, but cracked and chapped skin heals, and your vet can even prescribe medications to help reduce your dog’s discomfort and accelerate the healing process. On the other hand, dogs who ingest significant amounts of de-icing products may become very sick. Deaths aren’t very common in pups who eat ice-melting products (we were unable to find verifiable numbers regarding their frequency), but they are certainly a possibility. Even dogs who don’t die outright from eating these products may become seriously ill and require hospitalization. Thank you for listening in today! A recent study in the journal Nature says the Greenland ice sheet is now melting seven times faster than in the ‘90s. Why should we care? Faster melt means faster sea level rise, and that puts an extra 400 million people at flood risk by 2100, according to the same study. It was a hot topic among attendees at last month's American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco. Two of them, University of St. Thomas professor John Abraham and world-renowned climate scientist Kevin Trenberth sent Climate Cast an audio postcard with their thoughts.
