Sometimes, a creative transformation occurs after a painful experience in our lives. This certainly happened for our guest today, Bishop Briggs, who lost her sister at a young age in 2021. After a period of intense grieving, and struggling with depression, her son was born in 2022, and she went on to win The Masked Singer in 2023. Find the full episode on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/bishop-briggs We spoke with Bishop about how her creative process evolved during these life-changing events, as well as how she approaches creating with consistency, connects with her audience, and the surprising results of her experiments with generative AI. Also, a quick note for anyone who might be sensitive about the topics of depression and suicidal thoughts, Bishop does discuss these topics during the course of our interview, most notably around the 10 minute mark of the episode. Bio Bishop Briggs, born in London to Scottish parents, discovered her passion for music early, performing for the first time at a Tokyo karaoke bar at age four after her family relocated there. Immersed in Tokyo's karaoke culture and influenced by Motown and The Beatles at home, she began writing songs at seven. After moving to Hong Kong at 10, where she lived until 18, she pursued her dream of a music career by relocating to Los Angeles to attend the Musician's Institute. In Los Angeles, Bishop released her debut single, "Wild Horses," in 2015 and rose to prominence with her 2018 debut album, Church of Scars, and her 2019 follow-up, Champion. Her music has since reflected her personal journey, including profound loss, motherhood, and resilience. In 2023, she won The Masked Singer as "Medusa" and released her EP When Everything Went Dark. Her latest album, Tell My Therapist I'm Fine, debuted in October 2024, and she is currently on tour through Spring 2025. *** This is a premium episode on Design Better. Picture this: autumn leaves crunching beneath your feet, the distant cheers from a football stadium, and the crack of a baseball bat signaling playoff season. That's the backdrop for our latest musical escapade, filled with the sounds of Dayglow's motivational "What People Really Do" and Samara Joy's nostalgic "Autumn Nocturne." Matt and Samer, with their usual mix of humor and insight, kick things off by celebrating the eclectic mix of new tunes we've curated for October. From indie rock with a country twist to the jazz-infused echoes of the past, this episode is a celebration of the season's vibrant sounds, despite the unfortunate scorecards of the New York Jets and Giants. We also journey through the cinematic undertones of Gigi Perez's "Sailor Song," appreciating her singer-songwriter vibe, followed by a nod to Lady Gaga's vocal experimentation in the new Joker movie soundtrack. Samer and I dive into heartfelt discussions around the introspective anthems of Bishop Briggs, touching on the music industry's paradox of success. We make sure to end on a high note with Coldplay's latest, discussing how their consistent sound continues to resonate despite mixed reviews. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/new-music-october-24/pl.u-zDD5tGxoYJ1. Singer/songwriter Bishop Briggs lost her sister, her best friend, her roommate, and her manager all on one day in January 2021. They were all the same person. After Kate's death, swiftly following her diagnosis of ovarian cancer, Bishop plunged into a dark place, not eating, not really engaging with the world, and being increasingly haunted by thoughts of suicide. Ultimately, she found a path toward a better place with the assistance of a shockingly blunt pronouncement by her partner, the birth of her baby, and an openness to medication.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Sudden Hearing Loss Can't Stop Multiplatinum Rapper K.Flay

One day last fall, multiplatinum recording artist K.Flay woke up deaf in her right ear — hearing loss that she later learned was permanent. Suddenly losing half your hearing is traumatic for anyone, but what if you make your living as a musician? The only thing our guest, K.Flay, could think to do was head to the studio and start making music, which was difficult with all the sensory changes she was experiencing. However, in a story of resilience and internal fortitude, K.Flay pressed onward. Listen as she shares her emotions and story and how that led to her latest album, MONO. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our Guest is based in LA and originally from Illinois. Welcome multiplatinum artist K.Flay, born Kristine Flaherty, started rapping and writing songs on a lark while attending Stanford University and soon began releasing her self-produced mixtapes. In 2017, she released her major label debut album “Every Where Is Some Where,” earning two GRAMMY Award nominations for the album's iconic smash single “Blood in the Cut'' and sending her to arenas around the world with her kinetic live set. As a songwriter, musician, and producer, she's lent her talents to numerous collaborations, working with Fitz and the Tantrums, Bishop Briggs, Tom Morello, Louis the Child, Kaskade, Walk the Moon, Imagine Dragons, grandson, The Regrettes, Two Feet, MisterWives, and more. Whether working on her music or with others, K.Flay's output remains rooted in her undeniable lyrical skills, an element she attributes to her innate love of language and its infinite possibilities. This spring, she announced her fifth studio album MONO — due out September 15th. The LP is her first for Giant Music and is her first since going suddenly and completely deaf in her right ear at the end of last summer. Although K.Flay's hearing loss deeply informed her songwriting on MONO, the album marks the start of a new era for the artist who explores an entire spectrum of existential questions and complex matters of the heart and mind on the LP. Additionally, K.Flay wrote an original song “T-Rex” for Neflix's groundbreaking new animated film “Nimona” which was released last month. A relentlessly boundary-pushing artist with more than 1 BILLION streams and 100K+ tickets sold, K.Flay continues to commit herself to constant growth by holding herself to higher and more rigorous standards in every aspect of her artistry. David Archuleta is arguably one of the most memorable top contenders from American Idol. After he walked away from the 2008 season as 1st runner up, he met with immediate professional success. His first single, “Crush,” sold more than 2 million digital copies to become double platinum. Three months later, his self-titled album, David Archuleta, sold more than 900,000 copies worldwide. With a faithful social media following (3.5 million Facebook followers, 1.1 million on Twitter, and almost 1 million followers on Tik Tok), David has toured all over the U.S., Canada, Asia and even in the Middle East. Through all that, David was dealing with a huge internal conflict between his spiritual identity and his sexual orientation. In 2021, David came out as queer to the LGBTQ community and continues to navigate his identity. During this time, he also had vocal cord surgery, which left him unable to speak much for 3 months, resulting in a period of self-reflection. In the fall of 2022, David revealed to Good Morning America that he was experiencing a faith crisis and stepping away from the Church of Latter Day Saints, having been a Mormon his whole life. That was then, this is now... 2023, the year of Archuleta. He just completed a run on The Masked Singer, again hitting the covetted !st Runner Up spot. But even though Bishop Briggs won the top spot, David walked away with the most love. The normally quippy and non-serious judge Ken Jeong was brought to tears when David's identity was revealed. After David  shared of his journey, the rest of the audience was in tears as well.  Today we talk to David and play his new single UP, "a song about finding the strength you didn't know you had in you. In this episode, singer-songwriter Brooke Simpson, who just made her Broadway debut in the revival of 1776, shares the impact her culture as an Indigenous woman has had on her creativity. From her early days dressing and dancing for her tribe's “pow wow” ceremonies, she learned “to bleed creativity” into the foundation of who she is today.   She has been a finalist for both The Voice and America's Got Talent, and she also represents Nike's N7 campaign for Indigenous youth, supporting their mental health by promoting movement.  Brooke sees her style of movement as being on stage singing, and her message in the campaign is “When you hear me, you hear us.” She loves shining her light as an example for other Indigenous people, to see someone who looks like themselves successfully performing. Topics covered in this interview: –Brooke “camouflaging” herself as one of five people of color growing up to fit in, while in school. –The power of her culture and community –from the trauma many moved through that is still “in the bones”–to their strength, resilience, passion and heart that manifests in her life in a different way today. –Her regret at not trying out to be “princess” in her tribe. –When performance anxiety shows up, Brooke remembers that she is a model for the next generation to look up to, so they know there is a space for them to succeed as well. –Representing the Nike N7 campaign and changing the slogan for the song she sings. She got introduced to Nike from Taboo of The Black Eyed Peas, who is also Indigenous. –Getting the part portraying Sir Roger Sherman in the revival of the Broadway musical 1776, which was like moving from “black and white to color, opening a whole new world of possibilities for creative sparkle.”   –A poignant moment when she shares the piece of clothing she wears in the musical that belonged to her father, and was created by a cousin at age 12. –The excitement, fun, and power of being part of a racially diverse cast. About Brooke SimpsonSinger-songwriter, actor, creative, dancer and actor From recording her first song at the age of two years old to charting Top 10 in the iTunes and Billboard charts, Brooke Simpson is no stranger to music. Rachel Krantz is the author of Open: An Uncensored Memoir of Love, Liberation, and Non-Monogamy. She is also one of the founding co-editors of Bustle, and a recipeint of the Peabody Award. Rachel and I discuss the complicated and overwhelming process of finding safety and authenticity within the world of unconventional relationships. While being careful not to dismiss non-monogamy outright, we do our best to lend some much needed nuance to the topic. We discuss power dynamics, discernment, abuse, safety, trust and intuition, among many other things. Rachel's book is incredibly courageous, vulnerable and nuanced, and I was honored to discuss it with her in this conversation.
