Rosen and Roarke dig into the Conference Finals. They highlight Edmonton's defensive growth, Stuart Skinner's bounce-back performances, and how the Stars are feeling the pressure. The duo also break down what's holding the Hurricanes back and why it has nothing to do with Rod Brind'Amour. They explore Carolina's style of play and what key piece might still be missing. To wrap up, they discuss Jeff Blashill's hiring in Chicago and whether patience is truly the best path for a second time NHL head coach.

I don't think that Fantasy Island was a show that was meant for the entire family, but with my family's liberal bedtime and television policy, it became a hit with my sisters and I. Half the time, I didn't really understand what was going on, but the show was mysterious and exciting. So every week I looked forward to watching it, and when I discovered it was shown in re-runs, I would check it out there as well. Then one day, my sister asked a great questions, “What is Mr. Roarke?” It was a simple questions, but would have an effect on how I consumed media moving forward. I start the podcast talking about how that questions came up before moving onto the show itself, where I do find an answer to it. Maybe its not an official answer, but its pretty close. Then I talk about the show's development, production, cast, broadcast, and much more. The idea behind Fantasy Island is strong. Strong enough that they have attempted to re-use the idea multiple times. Which is why I don't understand how the full run of the show isn't on physical media. It is a show that's future I worry about, and I hope it gets a few of you to check it out and/or revisit it.
In this episode of Podcast in Death, We dive into another "We Review the Reviews" session. This time taking on Apprentice in Death and wow, do the one-star reviewers have thoughts. Is Roarke just a billionaire Mary Sue with too much access to NYPSD investigations? Is a laser rifle supposed to have recoil? And most importantly… is outrage over Nora calling a fictional school “Hillary Clinton High” the hill to die on?We also make a big announcement: for the next three months, we're taking a detour into Nora Roberts' Chronicles of the One series! We've teased it before, but now we're finally doing it—and yes, Tara will actually finish the series this time. (Fingers crossed.)Highlights of this episode include:Rants about how Nora's fictional science doesn't match up with some people's view of Real Science. So many people really pissed about Roarke's 10-minute miracle app that would be impossible for anyone to do, except now it can be done with ChatGPT.A laser-focused (pun intended) takedown of angry reviewers who just… really need to stop reading if they hate the books this much.A moment of appreciation for Susan Ericksen, aka Saint Susan of Ericksen, and her flawless narration.

In this episode we review "Apprentice in Death," where Willow Mackie is one of the absolute worst characters on the planet.AJ had a theory about the theme that might sound a little random at first, but hear her out: the theme of this book is cold. And she has the receipts. There are literal mentions of “cold blood” everywhere and Feeney even says, “You can't teach cold blood, Dallas.” But also, randomly, there's a subplot about Eve owning the most elite ice cream shop in NYC (Because Roarke), and yes, the killers went there for caramel sundaes after murdering people. Feeney's reaction? “Fucking cold. And I ain't talking ice cream.”We love the scene where Eve consults with Lowenbaum at "The Dallas Palace," but we are sad when Lowenbaum later faces some really hard truths. This is the book where Willow Mackie decides to execute a mass "Pew, Pew"-ing, and it just so happens to be at Madison Square Garden where Mavis is playing and Summerset took Roarke's tickets to go see her. Eve and Roarke are both panicked as they speed down to the scene. Many people are dead or injured but all of Eve and Roarke's people are fine and they are relieved. Eve is so relieved that she asks Summerset to make sure Dickie Berenski is okay. Is EVE okay??This is also the book where we first meet Jake!! Nadine warns him Eve won't recognize him. She doesn't. He's already calling her “Lois.” We love him. After a very emotional and exhausting night, Eve and Roarke fight over whether or not Eve should question Summerset at that very moment. Roarke says no, Eve says yes. We have to say, we are siding with Eve on this one. We understand that Roarke loves his people and worries about them, but Eve and Summerset need to work things out on their own. Also, this was a really interesting book to read right after reading "Bonded," as Summerset talks about having an "Urban Wars" flashback.
Jean-Francois Chaumont joins Dan and Shawn to talk all thing Montreal Canadiens. Chaumont goes into how the team has been able to achieve winning mentality along with giving us deeper insight in Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and goalie Samuel Montembeault. In addition to chatting with Chaumont, Rosen and Roarke discuss Alex Ovechkin setting the NHL all-time goals record by scoring his 895th on Sunday. They discuss the most disappointing team of this season, and they breakdown the race for the NHL scoring title this season between Nikita Kucherov and Nathan MacKinnon.
Dan and Shawn are first joined by Kim Weiss, video coach for the AHL's Colorado Eagles, to discuss her trailblazing coaching journey, including becoming the first female coach of a North American junior team and now a video coach in the AHL. Later, Kori Cheverie, head coach of the PWHL's Montreal Victoire and assistant coach with Team Canada, talks about her coaching roles, learning from Mike Sullivan and Sidney Crosby, and the growing opportunities for women in hockey. Rosen and Roarke close the show with a look at Alex Ovechkin's chase of Wayne Gretzky's goal record, how injuries to McDavid and Draisaitl impact the Oilers, and a debate on a potential Capitals-Jets playoff matchup.
This week, we roast some of the dumbest Goodreads reviews of Bonded in Death—complete with ChatGPT-generated comebacks and code names for cranky reviewers. We rant about trigger warnings, explain (again) what a police procedural is, and wonder why people keep reading books they clearly hate. Also: Summerset's a badass, Roarke's still rich, and we're still annoyed.

This week, we give you Part 2 of our review of "Bonded in Death." In this part, the plan comes together and after a few mishaps (where Eve gets shot AT, not shot), the NYPSD finally captures Conrad Potter.Speaking of Conrad Potter, he is going to go down in "Podcast in Death" history as one of our least favorite villains. Among other things, he's a bigoted wanker, and a privileged fuck, and we really hate him. Some great moments here, including Eve and Roarke dismantling a bomb, and the whole crew (and Roarke) breaking into Conrad Potter's home to save a child he had kidnapped (Potter is the absolute worst). Potter calling Eve the "C" word, and earning a kidney punch from Roarke. The book is aptly named because we see how Summerset and the rest of "The Twelve" had formed such a tight bond. BUT...is this the book where Eve and Summerset finally bond??

Look, we know that most...if not all...billionaires today are horrible humans. And right now in the world of fiction, and most specifically Romance fiction, people are starting to call for the end of the "Billionaire Hero" trope. We are here to make the case that Roarke is a different kind of billionaire. One that, while he occasionally does things that we're not happy about, he's the kind of person that real life billionaires should strive to be like. So, in this episode, we talk about all of the ways that Roarke uses his billions to help people and make the world a better place.
Dan and Shawn are joined by Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly (20:18) and talked about playing at Ohio State, where he has seen many a college football game as a Buckeyes fan growing up in Dublin, Ohio. He discussed the importance of the game to the fans in Columbus, how it's an opportunity for them to showcase their passion for the game and the Blue Jackets, who will be playing in their first NHL outdoor game. Finally, Kuraly appeared to get emotional discussing the lasting impact Johnny Gaudreau has on the Blue Jackets. Prior to the interview with Kuraly, Rosen and Roarke talked about Alex Ovechkin's chase for Wayne Gretzky's goal record and the lasting impact of the 4 Nations Face-Off. They wrapped up the episode talking about the Trade Deadline and what teams such as the Red Wings, Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks and more could do come next week.

This is a topic that was suggested by listener and Facebook Group member Betsy. She suggested we talk about "All the ways that Roarke is old-fashioned."It's actually one of the things I think we all love about him. From his love of actual books and artwork to his love of Irish culture, language and family, to his love of classic videos and games. He's a traditional kind of guy.We go off topic a lot in this one, especially when we talk about Summerset, who we are sure has a difficult time being discreet in a house where Eve and Roarke pretty much have sex anywhere they decide to.
Ugh, what's worse than an entitled, bored, narcissistic rich boy? TWO entitled, rich, narcissistic boys. Eve has her hands full in this one with two killers, but thankfully she has the team (including Roarke behind her)! Listen as we try to contain our feminine rage as we discuss Seduction in Death (2001).

**WE HAVE A NEW MERCH STORE! Now until the end of February, get 10% off all our merch!! http://podcast-in-death-merch.printify.me/ "Brotherhood in Death" is at it's core, a book about change. And we all know how much Eve hates change. But, unfortunately for her, Roarke wants her to change her office, and that sparks an argument. The main case is really a hard read, but it's probably not a stretch to say that everyone involved in those crimes, the perpetrators and victims were profoundly changed due to the crimes that were committed. Trueheart changes from an officer to a detective. So lots of change here. This is such a great read, and a lot of that is because we love Dennis Mira and this book contains a lot of really great Dennis Mira moments. Most specifically his moments with Eve, all of which are so sweet, even when Eve is questioning him about his cousin's murder. There's also plenty of really great funny moments here, most specifically the creepy doll room, and Eve telling Peabody to "Put the dicks in the box with the asses" and Peabody answering, "You know what's going to happen with a penis and two asses in the same box, right?" Overall, a great book, and one of our favorites.
In this 2024 Holiday Episode, we imagine a year where, Eve and Roarke are so busy with their jobs or with that they did not have time to plan their annual Christmas Party. This is unacceptable to Mavis, so Mavis decides to plan a surprise Christmas party for Eve and Roarke (which Roarke would love and Eve would hate). But Eve and Roarke realize they don’t have gifts for anyone at the party, so they rush to their gift room to find gifts for everyone. So, given this scenario, we found 30 luxury gifts that they might find in the gift room, one gift for each person at the party. We will say a character name randomly, and then we will both decide what gift Eve and Roarke would give each of their friends. It’s a really fun episode! We hope you enjoy the episode and Happy Holidays!
We are excited to be back with Eve and Roarke! We are loving seeing their relationship (both personal and professional) grow. But, uh oh, Peabody and McNab are NOT okay. And have we mentioned the gruesome murders that need to be solved? Listen in as we discuss Betrayal In Death (2001).
Nick Cotsonika joins the podcast (18:11) to discuss the Blue Jackets playoff hopes, Zach Werenski's Hart Trophy candidacy, and Kirill Marchenko's breakout season. He also shares thoughts on the Red Wings' strong start under Todd McLellan and whether it's sustainable. Rosen and Roarke open the episode with trade deadline chatter surrounding the Rangers and Bruins and preview the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, including Canada's goalie decisions and the Finland-Sweden rivalry.
This book is the last one of the novellas, and we hate to say that we're relieved. Tara stated that she liked this book as much as she liked "Chaos," and that is to say she didn't really like it much at all. AJ just finds this book a bit silly, not to mention the fact that twice "talking to the dead" is mentioned and Eve rolls her eyes when EVE LITERALLY TALKED TO THE DEAD IN "POSSESSION IN DEATH!!" That being said, there are some funny moments in the book, so it is still an okay book from that standpoint. We both love when Roarke says the "didn't come down in the last shower of rain," and the end where Eve and Peabody are both under the influence after taking down the bad guy. Also, for some reason, Eve is a bit judgmental over the fact that one of the victims had "over a dozen bras," which to us seems a normal amount (and we're sure that Eve has WAY more bras/support tanks in her closet).

Season 5, Episode 1 2025 Indiana General Assembly This week we meet the newest staff member at the ICC, Roarke LaCourisere! Alexander and Roarke also discuss the top priorities for the ICC in the upcoming 2025 session, which begins on January 8.
In this episode, we Review the Reviews of "Devoted in Death." We knew they were going to be bad (for the most part). But we're always surprised at how many people continue to read and review these books who clearly don't like the characters, the writing, and essentially the series itself. We've decided it's a kink...they get off on reading books they don't like and then writing reviews talking about how the author needs to stop writing the books you hate. Makes no sense. But anyway...Among those are the people who said:"S&M and torture? Thanks but no thanks.""I don't pay for sloppy work. At all.""Hate romance novels disguised as thriller.""..this series really needs to end.""...it seems like it's always Christmas, about to be Christmas or just after Christmas.""...extreme foul language used by Eve"Not to mention the review in all caps that said: "MORE OF THIS IRRITATING TREND OF TRYING TO MAKE EVE FUNNY - I JUST KNOW IT WAS VERY NOTICEABLE TO ME. AND, I DON'T LIKE IT..."Among the good reviews, we have:"I listened on Audio and as usual Susan Ericksen does a fab job!""Pulpy fun, routine formula but well written...""...the sizzling speed and urgency of the investigation keep the reader turning pages quickly."Plus, we talk about a LOL moment that we missed on the last episode, Roarke metaphorically marks his territory with Eve, and we're really upset to realize that we were hoping to read "Brotherhood in Death" next, but it's actually the last novella of the series: "Wonderment in Death." BOO!

We are back with In Death, and there is trouble in paradise! Eve has a mess on all sides in Judgment in Death (2000). Cops are dying, cops are dirty, cops (*cough* Webster *cough*) are hiding in her bushes, and Roarke isn't speaking to her! You don't want to miss this one!
Dan and Shawn were joined by Clayton Keller (20:40) and Nathan MacKinnon (44:03). Keller discussed getting started with the Utah Hockey Club, the journey from Arizona, the uniforms, experience so far and what the team could do this season. Before the interview with Keller, Rosen talks about his on-the-ground experience in Prague covering the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils in the 2024 NHL Global Series. They also went in depth on the Swayman contract stalemate. MacKinnon talked about trying to build on last season, his focus and determination to try to win the Stanley Cup, and more things like having a personal chef and the benefits of that. The episode finishes with Rosen and Roarke debating the topic of preseason games versus regular season games, and if the League should play fewer preseason games and more regular season games.
Dan and Shawn are joined by Jack Hughes (15:33) and Jon Carlson (36:40). Rosen and Roarke open the show discussing the Buffalo Sabres and their European adventure. They talked about Rasmus Dahlin being named the Sabres new captain and Buffalo's chances of ending what is now a 13-year playoff drought. Auston Matthews' chances of one day owning the NHL goal record, the Capitals chances of making the playoffs, the excitement around Philadelphia Flyers rookie forward Matvei Michkov and the impact the Utah Hockey Club is already making in Salt Lake were also topics discussed.
Is this an In Death or Agatha Christie?? Witness In Death (2000) is scaling down the In Death universe to a more intimate mystery. It's a real whodunit and we loved it! Also, Eve and Roarke are super cute in this one. (Swoon.)
Dan and Shawn are joined by NHL.com's own draft guru, Mike Morreale (16:18), who is the NHL.com Senior Draft Writer and co-host of the "NHL Draft Class" podcast. Morreale answers questions about Celebrini, the projected No. 1 pick to the San Jose Sharks. He discusses what makes him special, his rehab from shoulder surgery he had five months before beginning this season as a freshman at Boston University, and why we should expect to see him in the NHL with the Sharks as soon as a few months from now. In addition, Morreale talks about the other players in the draft, reasons why he thinks defenseman Artyom Levshunov from Michigan State University should be the No. 2 pick to the Chicago Blackhawks. He also touches on forward Tij Iginla from Kelowna in the Western Hockey League potentially being the player who steals the draft if he's selected by the Calgary Flames. Prior to chatting with Morreale, Rosen and Roarke breakdown the Panthers winning the Stanley Cup, how Game 7 played out, the viewership and the impact of that 2-1 win. They also talk about the future of the Panthers, who have 11 pending unrestricted free agents and what will come of the Edmonton Oilers now that they need a new general manager and should be trying to sign forward Leon Draisaitl to a contract extension. Following the interview with Morreale, Rosen and Roarke dive into some of the bigger names that could make it to the free-agent market Monday, including Steven Stamkos, Jake Guentzel, Jonthan Marchessault and Patrick Kane. They close with their thoughts on the Hockey Hall of Fame's Class of 2024, with some differences of opinion on if Jeremy Roenick and Shea Weber should be included in the class.
Daren is joined by Dan Rosen and Shawn Roarke of NHL.com and the NHL @TheRink podcast (3:36) to put a bow on the 2023-24 NHL Season and look ahead to what will happen during free agency. The guys try to describe the importance of what this season has been to the NHL and why the League is seemingly in a great place. Plus, they discuss the possibilities surrounding Steven Stamkos, Sam Reinhart, Jake Guentzel & Jonathan Marchessault. They chat about the potential for the Utah Hockey Club to make a big splash in free-agency and try to predict who the favorite will be to win the Stanley Cup next season. Daren starts the episode looking back at an amazing Stanley Cup Final and the reasons for its incredible success across North America.
In this emergency episode of Podcast in Death, we delve into the Myers-Briggs personality test for the Roarke. Hey, Everyone! On this episode of “Podcast in Death,” we are reviewing the reviews of “Calculated in Death.” To no-one’s surprise, there are tons of “ghostwriter” accusations, and so many people complaining about how boring this book was. We go off on a little rant when an “author” who gave Nora a 1-Star review a few books ago comes back to give another 1-Star review. Among other bad reviews, we have: Weak, trite writing. Ridiculous amount of swearing. Even more vacuous than usual. This book is like overcooked oatmeal…bland, sort of mushy and hard to swallow. …one of the worst books in the series, it was sloppy and lazy. On the other hand, we have a lot of good reviews too: I enjoy Roarke’s playful, flirty, platonic banter with Peabody …as always, a fun one. Susan Ericksen again narrated this so well. Loved how she does the voice of Peabody. It really was a day at the beach read. A warm fuzzy on a cold day. Time spent with people you love.
In this episode of “Podcast in Death,” we review “Calculated in Death.” This is a book that is, according to Tara, a nice “palette cleanser” after the intensity of “Delusion in Death.” While Tara really enjoyed this book, AJ felt this one was kind of “meh,” where the case is concerned. But we all agree that there are so many really good moments in this book, including: The really dumb Candida and her white panther cub and her fancy water harvested from the snowmelt in the Andes Galahad getting pissed at Eve because he smelled the white panther cub on her The suspect throwing a baby at Eve, and Eve making that really excellent catch Baxter telling Eve that Trueheart is ready for his Detective exam, and she agrees The mother they question who’s son is refusing to take a nap, and Eve tells him it’s either a nap or jail saying, “There’s no ice cream in jail, no toys in jail, no cartoons on screen in jail. There’s just jail.” Peabody’s undercover operation as “Dolly” who works as an exotic dancer at the “Kitty Kat.” All these scenes and more make this book a really great read!
This week, we are reviewing the reviews of “Delusion in Death,” and there were so many bad reviews of this one, especially three 1-Star reviews all from men. The first one is especially bad when this man says: “One of THE MOST PAINFUL BOOKS in all of eternity…The story – depressing. The character – disgusting. The author – revolting.” The next 1-Star review says: “Everyone that exists in this book are smug pricks,” and the one after that says: “cannot survive outside the readership of a police community, far less outside the United States of America.” (Who’s going to tell him that this book was a best seller not only in the U.S., but all around the world.) There was also one reviewer who didn’t like this book because they thought the plot was too close to the James Bond movie: “A View to a Kill.” Spoiler Alert: It’s not. At ALL. Other comments include: “just tired of hearing about them ad nauseum. If I were Roarke, I think I’d check out.” “I couldn’t get past the second chapter.” “The futuristic setting is nothing but a gimmick: ‘Links and Blinks and Rinky-Dinks…” “What I am finding distasteful is that she is more and more adding God’s name in vain and the F bomb.” “It started going downhill when you switched to hardcover” “Adult comic book – – bad” By contrast, there were some very thoughtful good reviews on this book too. “I suddenly started shipping Nadine & Kyung. I don’t know why, I just did.” “Spending time with Eve and Roarke always puts my in my happy place!” “Even if you don’t want to be seen with a romance, I swear pick it up on Kindle or Audible and try one! You’ll be hooked!” “I would recommend the series and plan to keep reading it for now. It is still entertaining which is what really counts.” “A Must Read!” “I am lovin’ it !!!” “Damn good story!”
Dan and Shawn are joined by Turner Sports analyst and former NHL goalie Darren Pang (15:00). Pang explains why losing goalie Thatcher Demko to an undisclosed injury will be an issue for the Canucks and discusses how the Avalanche have re-gained control of their series against the Jets largely because they have found a way to score 10 goals in two games against Hellebuyck. Pang also gives a full two-minute breakdown of Sergei Bobrovsky's incredible save on Matt Dumba in the Panthers OT win against the Lightning and calls that save the best he's seen in the NHL this season. He also talks about the Lightning and answers the question from Rosen on if we're seeing the end of an era of Tampa Bay hockey. In addition, Rosen and Roarke discuss the Islanders and Capitals chances of getting back in their respective series. The Islanders are down 2-0 to the Hurricanes and the Capitals are down 2-0 to the New York Rangers. They breakdown Carter Verhaeghe's ability to be clutch, why the Maple Leafs need to be forthright about what is going on with forward William Nylander, the impact of Mark Stone's return to the Vegas Golden Knights and more. Off the ice, Rosen and Roarke talk about the hiring of Lindy Ruff as the Sabres new coach and the firing of David Quinn.

I don't know what any of that symbolizes. If you could make your own statue of liberty, would you change anything?1:02:40 Charisma has helped me in business but I fear this ability. How is it different from social metaphysics? Is it just a matter of purpose ie. reality/productive focus vs non-productive social focus? Eg. Jobs vs Obama charisma1:04:20 Have you ever been inside the Statue of Liberty?1:05:26 you're competing with an ARI and an ARCUK stream! (hope to see more of this in the future!)1:05:56 Why would anyone waste their time asking Iran to stand down? That just gives them recognition they don't deserve. Is Iran even open to persuasion?1:06:40 Why did ARI put out a video subtly implying it was somehow Maria & Milei's fault for an interview format that ARI ultimately agreed to?1:10:32 Until recently i could neverer understand how holocaust could happen Now i totally get it. Also do you think Israel willl exist in 30 years or so??1:12:29 Do you think Brook Derangement Syndrome exists? 1:14:23 It surprises me that people like Charlie Kirk & Candace Owens praise Winston Churchill but if they were alive in WW2 they would call him a warmongerer1:15:49 Is there any justification for private citizens taking foreign policy into their own hands or is that illegal?1:16:31 OutroShow is Sponsored by The Ayn Rand Institute https://www.aynrand.org/starthereEnergy Talking Points, featuring AlexAI, by Alex Epstein alexepstein.substack.comExpress VPN https://www.expressvpn.com/yaronJoin this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/@YaronBrook/joinLike what you hear? In this episode, we will be reviewing “Delusion in Death,” which is a book that all three of us haven’t read for years, probably because it’s such a hard read. But, it’s such a good book! First, we talk about theme. Deciding on the theme for this book was difficult, because it could be so many things, but we finally setting on the theme of “Choices.” So much of what happens in this book happen because of the choices that the characters have made. You can see this theme when Eve had her nightmare where she inserted Dr. Mira into the dream, and at the end of it, “dream” Dr. Mira tells Eve: “Out of terrible times, perhaps more than ordinary ones, heroes and villains spring. Sometimes there's little difference between them but a choice, and the choice made defines them. Look at the choices.” There is a lot of growth in this book for Eve, one of the indicators of this is the dream, and how, after the dream was over, instead of feeling scared/sad/vulnerable, she felt happy and energized. And horny. This is also the book where Eve finally tells Peabody about what happened in Dallas (“New York to Dallas”). It’s a really amazing scene between Eve and Peabody, probably one of the best Eve/Peabody scenes in the entire series. There’s also a bit of growth from both Eve and Roarke when they’re forced to accept an HSO agent into the group investigating this crime, and they both not only come to terms with that, but make their peace with it and the HSO agent, Teasdale, is actually a good person and a valuable part of the team. There’s also a really great scene where Eve takes Roarke with her to interview a few of the witnesses, and Eve tells Roarke that she wants him to be “Scary Roarke Lite.” Roarke is thrilled with this role that Eve has given him and just really kills it. Again, another one of the best scenes in the series. Overall, as we said, it’s a really great book, and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.
Dan and Shawn are joined by NHL.com columnist Nick Cotsonika from South Florida to recap the GM Meetings. The guys talk about the reasons why the GMs decided to leave well enough alone with the 3-on-3 overtime format and rules, citing the fact that an NHL-record 70 percent of games that go to overtime are ending in overtime this season. They discuss the additions to the coach's challenge rule for penalties on delay of game for shooting the puck over the glass and on certain high sticking minors. They also talk about the future of the Arizona Coyotes. In addition, they talk about the struggles of the Detroit Red Wings and the success of the Nashville Predators. After Cotsonika departs, Rosen and Roarke discuss why they think the Colorado Avalanche right now are the best team in the Western Conference and arguably the entire NHL, and if the Tampa Bay Lightning can be as dangerous in the playoffs as they look right now. The Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils also enter the conversation on the podcast.
Dan and Shawn are joined by Paul Maurice (19:11). He talked about the Florida Panthers' leadership, improvements they still need to make, the importance of their identity and culture, and why nothing will come as a surprise to them this season with the way last season played out. The guys discussed the fallout from the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, in particular offering opinions on the Pittsburgh Penguins decision to trade Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes and the return they got. They agreed that the New York Rangers and Hurricanes as contenders in the Eastern Conference with the Panthers, and talked about the wide-open Western Conference, in particular the kind of impact Tomas Hertl might be able to have on the Vegas Golden Knights. Rosen and Roarke also discussed the Golden Knights' ability to add Hertl and the salary cap ramifications for both them and the San Jose Sharks. They also talked about the New Jersey Devils goaltending situation, the additions of Jake Allen and Kaapo Kahkonen on Friday, how it resets their depth at the position and still sets them up to look for a No. 1 goalie like Jacob Markstrom in the offseason.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the latest J.D. Robb Title: “Random in Death.” So, if you haven’t read the book yet, you might want to skip this episode so you don’t get spoiled. We’ve decided that for this book, the theme is: Dreams! Not necessarily the dreams you have when you’re asleep, but your dreams and aspirations of what you truly want for yourself. This is a really hard book to read because the victims are all young and still have so many dreams for themselves and their future. But also because the killer himself is a garbage human and the method is really horrible. When Eve has to do any of the notifications, the parent’s reactions are just heartbreaking. Roarke is very active in this case, and while Eve is cool with that, Tara really disliked how much Roarke is involved this time. AJ doesn’t have a problem with Roarke being very involved in most aspects of this case, but she does have a problem with Roarke being so involved that he gives his private number to a teenaged girl. We spend a lot of time talking about all the Future Slang that Nora has put into this book, we assume because all of the victims and most of the witnesses are teenagers, and why wouldn’t they have a ton of their own slang phrases that they use? There’s also a really nice scene with Eve and Roarke stopping by “The Great House Project” and spending the evening with their circle of friends. We get an update on the building that Eve had Roarke buy for her, the building where Teeg the Dick lived and had his club. Now that Teeg has been kicked out, and the renovations have begun, Roarke asks Eve to think about a new name for the new club that they will be putting in there. After contemplating the name “Teeg is an Asshole,” Eve settles on “Off Duty.” This book also rehashes the money argument from an earlier book. This time, Eve gives Roarke more of an explanation in that because she no longer has to keep meticulous track of all her money now, she has found that she forgets to get cash when she needs it. That in turn makes her feel dumb, and when Roarke gives her money because she forgot, she feels even more dumb. They compromise, and we hope that’s the end of that argument. This is a long episode, but we had a lot to say about this book, and we hope you enjoy it!
