A sundry talk from 2025. More information can be found here: https://first164.blogspot.com/
Tonight, on NJ Spotlight News…Should the state reconsider the multi-billion-dollar Turnpike expansion, now that data from the new midtown toll appears to be reducing highway congestion; Plus, firearm purchasing is on the rise, but are folks buying them for the right reasons? Also, the recent sinkholes are now sending ripple effects and fears into neighboring communities; And the democrats on defense, showing up in the state's predominantly red districts to fight back against the President's agenda.
This Day in Maine for Thursday, March 6, 2025.
A number of federal lawmakers have put their weight behind a bill that is designed to expand the number of truck parking spaces nationwide. Also, an Ohio Turnpike official lays out a plan to go after tolls left unpaid after the highway moved to open-road tolling for E-ZPass users. And Land Line Magazine's staff joins the show to discuss how 2025 is expected to be a pivotal year in the march toward autonomous trucks. 0:00 – Newscast 09:46 – Ohio Turnpike targets unpaid tolls 24:24 – The road ahead for autonomous trucks 39:23 – Truck parking effort back in Congress
Each service plaza along the Pennsylvania Turnpike now contains a mural depicting landscapes and attractions in their areas. The murals were created by local high school students under a program called Art Sparks, a joint effort of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Turnpike Commission. Mark Compton, CEO of the Turnpike Commission, says they want to make the service plazas more welcoming to visitors. “As we see it, about 550 ,000 travelers use this system every day and very few ever get off the system other than where their destination is. So, we wanted to make sure that some of the beautiful places around the Turnpike were able to be viewed from the service plaza, and that really was why we did what we did.” Jamie Dunlap of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts says this project had a huge impact on the students. “It's given them a chance to be a part of the creation of public art that is community driven and to work with a professional artist and to have that experience and to work with a client to then have amazing artwork produced at the end that is installed.” Dana Attivo is an art teacher on the very first mural project. The project took a few years, however, it brought the students together while creating the mural. “It's been quite a few years since we've done this, but we were super excited to participate, and one of the things that, speaking of the benefits that I noticed in my classroom is that group specifically, we had some small groups. We had a couple of friend groups that would come in and hang out with each other, and most of them were juniors that were working on the project. And by their senior year, it created such a different, tight -knit community in our classroom, because they all had to work together with each other. They weren't just coming in and doing their own thing. So we really loved the opportunity to put some work out into our community. We really loved the community that it created in our own classroom, and we loved the opportunity to work with a professional artist.” Katie Trainer and her students were the final group to create their murals. Trainers believe it forced her students to learn about local landscapes in their religion. “So getting them involved with the design, like what's important to you guys? You can't like at first all the students seem to be hesitant, like, oh, what do you mean Shippensburg is important? And it's like, well, no, it's what's like good. What's the value of your heritage or your town? What are some of the iconic buildings or what do you guys like to do? And so, getting them invested in the community aspect is always a very big deal. And from there, I can kind of find the common themes of what they've chosen to express and merge them together, figure out how it makes sense and then get painting.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She got a phone call about a pig that fell off of a slaughter truck on the Turnpike and Amy brought her to the ranch. She was very injured from falling off of the truck and Amy was worried that she wasn't going to make it. She just laid in the stall for 2 days and she slowly started to get better and is doing great now. She was checked out by the vet and was given medication for an infection. She built a space for her within a few days thanks to a friend and many donations. She has Maggie and Honey Bee in a nice area where they can see each other but not accidentally hurt each other. Amy had 6 pigs but recently had 2 adopted so now she has 4. Oogie and Boogie started acting up when they would smell Honey Bee go into heat. Amy knew that she needed to do something better for them so she started talking more about them to try to get them adopted. Out of nowhere the perfect family saw a video of her feeding them apples and the family decided that they wanted to adopt both boys. They got their property ready for Oogie and Boogie and then called Amy to tell them that they are ready to bring them home. So now Amy only has 4 pigs and has an open space for whatever is next to come. Amy is determined to make sure that her families are educated on their specific animal that they adopt from her so that they are set up for success and dont need to come back to the ranch. Amy has over 140 animals on her ranch that she has rescued. Amy tells us how she ended up with over 60 bunnies that needed to be rescued and how she cared for them and set a plan to get them adopted. Amy shares that everything is going well on the ranch but she will always need some form of help. The need for a rescue will always be there so she will always be busy on her ranch but she is very aware of what her limit is. She is always looking for volunteers to come help out at the ranch. New study shows fewer teachers are getting certified in Pennsylvania, and more are leaving the profession entirely. Fewer than half of U.S. adults fight medical bills or an insurance denial for their health care. The biggest reason why is because they don't know they have a right to do so - that's according to a new report by the Commonwealth Fund. In this episode of What Makes You Wonderful, we chat with the delightful Arietta DuPre. Executive Director of Operations for the Sweet Springs Turnpike, DuPre gives us all the details on the trails as well as the history behind them. There's a lot to learn in this episode! The Fincastle-Sweet Springs Turnpike was designed and completed by the renowned French civil engineer Claudius Crozet in the mid-1800s. It was the best-graded stagecoach turnpike in what was then VA and is still in excellent condition, never exceeding 5% (degrees). And now the portion traversing the Northeast side of Peter's Mountain is a user-friendly, multipurpose nature trail. From open pastures to dense forest, it's just over a mile long one way, boasting views of Sweet Springs Valley and the Andrew S. Rowan Memorial Farm, and seasonal foliage with a variety of tree species, raptors, and wildlife. It is a beginner-grade hiking and biking trail and is also open to electric mountain bikes and adaptive mountain bikes. You can find more information here: https://www.ssturnpiketrail.com/
