Interview by Kris PetersGrinding Eyes craft a uniquely dark sonic landscape, fusing psychedelic shoegaze, drone rock, and ambient garage punk. The Sydney band released their third studio album, Out of Focus, last Friday, further capitalizing on the momentum built through their 2018 self-titled album and 2021's Taste the Monochrome.Known for their relentless touring, Grinding Eyes have shared stages with The Jesus and Mary Chain, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Swervedriver, Graveyard, Moon Duo, Dinosaur Jr., Monkey Wrench, Superchunk, New Candys and Mudhoney, as well as Australian bands, Amyl and the Sniffers, Cosmic Psychos, Spiderbait, The Drones, Straight Arrows, DMA's, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Tropical Fuck Storm. The band's line up also boasts members from past and present bands The Mess Hall, Treatment, The Laurels, Bliss and Kimono Drag Queens, further cementing their deep roots in Australia's underground music scene. But Grinding Eyes are more than just the sum of their past bands. They are a sonic extension into another realm of musical experimentation held back without boundaries or expectations.Vocalist Matt Wicks joined HEAVY to tell us more."With this album, I suppose we sort of concentrated a little bit more on the sounds where previously we've pretty much done everything live," he measured. "We would dive straight in, start recording, do a lot of long sessions and sort of see what comes out. On this one we tried to refine it a little bit more, do most of the songwriting and we actually played most of these songs live for a couple of months. So they became a life of their own. We wanted to really harness more of a tighter sound where we could mess with it more in the studio than just having the sort of raw organic rock and roll feel of it."In the full interview, HEAVY spoke with Matt about the release of Out Of Focus following a year of delays. Matt expressed his relief regarding the album's completion and highlighted the band's creative evolution, mentioning that they have already started writing new material. The album features a mix of musical styles, reflecting their organic songwriting process.During their forthcoming Australian tour, the band intends to perform a substantial portion of the new album alongside some older tracks. Furthermore, they will support Pig's Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs on their European tour later this year.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In true DJ form, Snakes brings four rare/abstract vinyl singles to Electric Kitsch for a conversation about the DIY punk scene of his adolescence, the intersection of skateboarding and hip-hop, dusty independent soul holy grail 45s, proto-drumless rap from Wu's G.O.A.T. Today we present a fun and rollicking chat with Gareth Liddiard, frontman of Tropical Fuck Storm and the Drones and master anecdotalist. Gareth joins me to bring some sunshine to a brilliant and under-appreciated record by Spencer P Jones, the legendary guitarist and singer/songwriter originally from NZ who made Australia his home for most of his career. The twist is that Gareth played lead guitar on this record, Spencer P Jones and the Nothing Butts and has the inside story on the album's creation, how the songs came into being and the one of a kind mind of Spencer P Jones. From standing in the crowd in Perth while his sister throws a beer bottle that narrowly misses Spencer to meeting him at an early Drones gig in Melbourne to become friends, frequent tour mates and collaborators in the studio, Gareth opens up about his relationship with Spencer and shares some hilarious stories about one rock'n'roll's true eccentrics, involving earthquakes, scorpions, blood spattered amps, Nelson Mandela and Joe Satriani.
Gareth Liddiard is the singer, songwriter and guitarist for The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm, and Springtime. He is about to go on tour in honour of his 2010 solo album Strange Tourist, which has been reissued on vinyl. For tickets and records, go to tropicalfuckstormrecords.com.

For the full experience, watch the DIY "mini documentary": https://youtu.be/WvNgCQBU5z4 --- Being a label which has built a strong community around physical vinyl subscriptions over the last decade+, we were put in a rather difficult predicament when facing 2022 – a time when it takes anywhere from 7-14 months to create a traditional vinyl record... Do we fold to the pressures of post-covid life, or do we come up with some other way to keep this community together. The way we see it, this vinyl clog consists of at least five dimensions of supply chain disruption: 1. Bigger bands who couldn't tour in 2020 had delayed their album release are now submitting their mammoth volume orders only as quarantine started to ease up. 2. A bunch of smaller independent artists whose income had been dependent on touring up to that point ALSO stayed home and made new albums. This segment includes virtually every working band on the planet, not to mention a bumper crop of new artists who'd leveraged quarantine time to write and produce their debuts. 3. The professional bands from this segment who needed to find a way to replace touring income—most of them—felt additional pressure to put these albums out on vinyl. 4. A random video of a guy skateboarding to work on TikTok catalyzed the re-entry of dinosaur legacy IP conglomerates into the vinyl space constipating the entire global infrastructure of record manufacturing with millions of copies of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, and a bunch of other records that are already so abundant in the bins at record stores and thrift shops all across the world that you could wallpaper your house with them without being disrespectful to history. 5. All of these records hit the presses simultaneously at a moment when pandemic protocols in place at the factories were already slowing down production and—because vinyl manufacturing is actually more of an art than you would think—no skilled workers or machinists who were in a position to resolve or correct this failure of supply could be found. So, we were faced with a dilemma. And the only idea we had was to rely on our in-house 1940's era lathe-cutting machine to fill the gap. We've got Gareth Liddiard from Tropical Fuck Storm on the pod today! TFS could very much be considered one of Australia's greatest supergroups, bringing together members of The Drones, High Tension and Palm Springs. They're releasing their brilliant third record Deep States today, and about to hit the road in support! In today's episode, we're talking with Gaz about anarchy within popular music, being unable to write during the pandemic, the recording of Deep States, and whether he's been called out on his lyrics. You can listen to Deep States here. You can buy the record here. You can find tour dates here.Tropical Fuck Storm Instagram: @tfsbandTropical Fuck Storm FB: @tfsbandThanks again to Gareth Liddiard for his time. While most of us have lived througha veritable Tropical Fuck Storm in recent times, Melbourne Post-punk, Psychedelic rock, Noise rock, Art punk, Experimental rock, Punk blues, Blues rock, Alternative/Indie outfit (yes, they cover ALL of those genres) have named themselves after what all of us think and set about revitalizing the world through music – one song at a time. With their latest album Deep States out on August 20, TFS have vowed to bring joy to the world with a (hopefully) accompanying tour this August and September.Founding member Gareth Liddiard sat down with HEAVY during the week to discuss the new album."We did it all between lockdowns and stuff,” he explained. “We were mainly just trying to finish it, you know what I mean? We didn't have the luxury of thinking about it that much. our general modus operandi is just doing stuff in a weird and heavy way and not do everything we've done in the past. We've been doing it for a while and you kinda get sick of the same old shit. We're just messing around."In the full interview Gareth runs us through the album in greater detail, talks musical experimentation and how it is used to effect on Deep States, the genres mish mash and how TFS make it work, finding the balance between genres, whether TFS are a political band or not, the upcoming tour and more.

(give a fuck fatigue)", rimado primer adelanto. Years & Years muestran una versión reinventada del clásico icónico de Lady Gaga. Devendra Banhart y Noah Georgeson anuncian Refuge, disco colaborativo de ambient orgánico y estrenan "into the clouds" e "in a cistern", reflexivo doble avance. Wye Oak -que actuarán online la semana que viene- estrenan "it's way with me" melancólico y polirrítmico nuevo adelanto.

Lizzie Killian (FIFTYcc, chiptune rock band The Glowing Stars, formerly of Zynga, Humble Bundle, GamesRadar & more) joins this Weez-tastic episode of CrossFade! Something about “Pinkerton” caught Lizzie’s ear in high school. Maybe it was the rough production, disarmingly vulnerable lyrics, or just the solid solos – whatever it was, it quickly became one of her favorite albums ever. She even named her own band, The Glowing Stars, after a lyric from the track “Falling For You.” Matt’s pick, “A Laughing Death in Meatspace” by Australian psych rock band Tropical Fuck Storm, engages with the modern world in a way that doesn’t feel cheesy. It touches on politics, imperialism, class divide, human obsolescence, and more on top of unique, beautifully crunchy synth-and-overdrive textures. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: All terrestrial segments were recorded live on September 11th (Day 255 of 2020), and all podcast segments were recorded live on September 14th (Day 258 of 2020) Part 1 of 3 of the Podcast only content – The Brownsy Opening Day loss by the Browns is one of the only predictably normal things to happen in this pandemic to date, and so begins, assuredly, another long season of losing. (And check out Greg Miller's breakdown of the Week 1 game against the Ravens by clicking here) Today's NFL is different than the one back in 2016 when Kaepernick first began protesting police brutality and racial injustice, gone are the days where Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady are "the face of the NFL", in 2020 the face of the League are all black QBs. Harvard released the findings of a 4 year in depth study of the Massachusetts criminal system and what they found out should shock no one who's been paying attention lately, they found out our entire criminal system is racist against blacks and African-Americans. Hooray, USA is... 28th! (and dropping) Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content – A true story about how you can do everything right, follow all the guidelines and precautions, and still end up catching Covid-19. (begins around the 1:29:00 mark) Lachlan MacKinnon’s ‘Best of Edition’ Let Me Tell You A Story: “Pumpkin Head” (begins around the 1:48:00 mark) USA beach volleyball great Kerry Walsh Jennings is the latest athlete to reveal they shouldn't be listened to at all when it comes to anything other than beach volleyball. And also asking why should we listen to someone who's been entirely complicit with the sexual exploitation within her sport, in the first place. Buying whiskey in the middle of the afternoon, in the middle of the week, in the middle of a pandemic. #DontBeHatin Part 3 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Mollie’s Weekly Reports: "Bleeding Brown", turns out kissing has a lot more going on with it between potential partners than you know, and a new kind of protest in sports we're hoping becomes popular worldwide. (begins around the 2:47:00 mark) Colin Kaepernick is the #1 free agent available... In Madden 2020 that is. Meanwhile, in the real world, he and Eric Reid are still being blackballed by the NFL. Your Weekly Cleveland Baseball Team Playoff Probabilities! What you need to be rooting for this season in the Central Division playoff race if you have any hope of Cleveland making the World Series. Nothing is better than the NBA Bubble Playoffs right now. Mollie’s Weekly Reports, terrestrial edition! – Goddamn dumb gender reveal parties, and a karaoke fan hobo holds a pro-karaoke rally in Canada. Thank yous to 91.1-FM WRUW Cleveland for being home to the show, and to the city that inspires us, Cleveland, Ohio. Your recommended listening for the week is the Tropical Fuck Storm debut full length from 2018, 'A Laughing Death In Meatspace' The intro and outro to Lachlan’s segment is the song “My Summer In Traction” by the band Ohio Civil War , and it’s used with permission.
No, this isn't about the Dinosaur, Jr. album with the same name. It's weirder than that. In the decades since Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and dozens of psychedelic bands topped the charts, experimental music has been pushed to the side; ghettoized. But it has always been there and continues to evolve like a kaleidoscope. Steve takes Keith on a journey down the rabbit hole, deep underground to discuss the first psychedelic band, an Australian punk band, a pair of eccentric sisters, and a Brazilian group that has been dubbed psychedelic witches. Tune in as they delve into the lairs of the 13th Floor Elevators, Tropical Fuck Storm, CocoRosie, and RAKTA. As Keith mentioned in the episode, each of these bands benefit from a deeper listen than a random song or two, nonetheless here are a few possible entry points to the bands we discussed this week:13th Floor Elevators have three albums, but it's the first two (The Psychedelic Sounds of... and Easter Everywhere) that feature the classic line-up. Some of our favorites are "Step Inside This House," "Roller Coaster," "She Lives in a Time of Her Own," and "Levitation." Their most famous song and title of the Roky Erickson biopic is "You're Gonna Miss Me."Tropical Fuck Storm have only been around a few years and have released two proper albums and a series of singles with b-sides. "You Let My Tyres Down," "Two Afternoons," "Suburbiopia," and "Maria 63" may be a good way in.Trying to navigate CocoRosie is a bit more difficult. They have been around over 15 years and have released seven albums. Their songs vary in style from freak folk to hip hop to something that might be played by a baroque music box. They surely have a handful of songs that you will like, it just comes down to finding the ones that suit your taste. "Lucky Clover," "Terrible Angels," "Werewolf," "Restless" and the whole Grey Oceans album are all good entry points. Or you could start with their most recent album, Put the Shine On, released in March of 2020.It will probably only take you a few minutes to know whether you want to hear more RAKTA. You could start with "Falha Comum," "Fin do Mundo," "Raiz Forte," or "Atrativos Da Mentira." Support the show (https://teespring.com/stores/the-new-dad-rock)

The Sprung Squad were meant to catch up with the Aussie art punk ensemble Tropical Fuck Storm at the end of a Spanish tour taking in some of the country's finest underground venues. But they never called.
Seja talks to her guest Gareth Liddiard (The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm) about some of his experiences growing up in Port Hedland, Western Australia and London, how free jazz cassettes opened his mind to weird music and how he got started on the saxophone, bass and guitar. Gareth tells Seja about playing in his punk/hardcore band at surfie parties, the comradery he gained through music and how he got his job as a roadie. They chat about what a great musical family The Drones dropped into on arrival in Melbourne, the differences between playing in all boy/all girl bands, respect (or lack of respect) for other people’s equipment, and Gareth’s writing process. Also a touch of World War 2 talk. Gareth’s strange show experience is illustrated by Conrad Greenleaf (Richard in Your Mind, Stressless). All illustrations can be viewed on instagram @hearsejpodcast or on the HearSej Facebook page

Last week, the boys encountered a recording issue! This week, the boys reiterate some highlights from those lost recordings! Including, but not limited to, Goodfellas, IT part 2, Barry, Amon Amarth, and Bo's pee belly. Ian had a birthday! Scott saw Cake! Together, they join hands to discuss the latest album from Tropical Fuck Storm, Braindrops (27:13).
Gareth Liddiard is an icon. He is enigmatic, prolific, never adheres to trends and has a voice that is completely his own. With The Drones he paved the way for countless other Australian acts and his new band Tropical Fuck Storm is just as fresh and innovative. We sat down to talk about meat space, Gareth’s musicological obsessions, why Eric Clapton is a shitty guitar player and lots more. All music on the podcast by Joshua Moriarty & All The Colours. You Let My Tyres Down by Tropical Fuck Storm (this song really makes me feel stuff!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYWHjfVtoSM Mighty Sparrow (a big influence on Gareth musically): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZkiwdxbJBk A live version of Shark Fin Blues by The Drones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRu7yh7IQZk

Special guest PJ Sykes joins us to dissect one of the most raucous, and maybe most essential, releases of 2019. It's Christmas! so, this time, we're irking the Daily Mail readers by actually not doing much to do with Christmas at all (Let's call it a Winterval special just to annoy them even more!). It's our end of the year best of 2018 spectacular! We'll be counting down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus discussing our favourite gigs of the year and also music we've discovered this year which didn't come out in 2018.To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). Colin's wife then added all the points up and we didn't find out the order until we were recording, so all the reactions you'll hear are genuine. Now admittedly, we are a little bit brutal to some of the songs on the list, but please remember that to be in the episode they have to have been in one of our top tens of the year!Bands featured in this episode include Anaal Nathrakh, АИГЕЛ, The Atlas Moth, Author & Punisher, Big Russian Boss, Brooke Bentham, Church Of The Cosmic Skull, Clever Girl, The Common Cold, Corrosion Of Conformity, Dresden Dolls, Eels, Brian Eno/Kevin Shields, Epic45, Failure, Forest Swords, Four Stroke Baron, Gene, Ghost, Grouper, Half Man Half Biscuit, Ho99o9, Khruangbin, Laibach, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Metric, Malcolm Middleton, Mogwai, Neurosis, Pale Waves, Peaness, Josh T. Post-Trash Live returns for episode two. Careful to avoid the sophomore slump, hosts Nick Dooley and Dan Goldin discuss the idea of record label identities while sharing more of this year’s highlights. From “poptimism” to that one commercially acceptable noise rock band of the year, all is discussed together with new music from Tropical Fuck Storm, Irk, Mister Goblin, Miranda Winters, Renata Zeiguer, and LandownerIntro by Disco Doom
using a silly McDonald's prank as our starting point, the hacks ensemble goes off on a lot of freewheeling tangents concerning the somehow-still-running "culture jamming" outlet Adbusters, the alt-right, incels, what it means to try to effect change on the internet or IRL, and how mad can simon get at the west coast?? the song at the end is Tropical Fuck Storm, "The Happiest Guy Around"

This is InTune. A music appreciation podcast. For this episode Aidan, Jagan, and Andrew spent some time delving into their personal histories and their very own journeys with music. The idea is simple: InTune wants to celebrate new album releases. Each host must choose a new album from within a 30-31 day window to delve deep into, and we will discuss/critique it for the podcast. There are no genre restrictions. Just music that has captured our attention. For the first episode, we decided to ease into the podcast and each chose an album that stuck out to us from the summer. Here are the choices, with links. Andrew - A Laughing Death in Meatspace by Tropical Fuck Storm 20:55 - 39:40 A look into the Kasparov v. Deep Blue chess match. Aidan - Stranger Fruit by Zeal and Ardor 39:41 - 61:30 Someone Who Isn't Me Podcast Episode here Jagan - Negro Swan by Blood Orange 61:31 - 86:20 Pitchfork Interview with Dev Hynes
Some of the world's most engaging and unaccountable couplings from Robert Fripp and Toya Wilcox to the band formerly known as The Engaged Couples - ABBA. Our Album of the Week - A Laughing Death in Meatspace by Tropical F**k Storm. Beware the Shellfish Toxin.
Tropical Fuck Storm. TFS is what some would consider an Australian supergroup, consisting of Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin (The Drones), Lauren Hammel (High Tension) and Erica Dunn (Harmony/Palm Springs). The band made their live debut across the US in late 2017 supporting Band Of Horses and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. With only a trio of singles released since then, TFS are poised to release their debut album in mid 2018. Recorded at the PBS FM Studio’s in Melbourne on the 8th of February 2018. Engineered by Alicia Saye and Paul Marbury. Cable Ties: Cable Ties are vocalist and guitarist Jenny McKechnie (also of Wet Lips), bassist Nick Brown, and drummer Shauna Boyle. They take the 3 minute punk burner and stretch it past breaking point. Their first show was in 2015, playing a backyard in Melbourne as part of the inaugural Wetfest, an annual gig that showcases some of the best emerging women-led and gender non-conforming acts from the Melbourne music scene. Since then they have given us a handful of 7 inches before signing with Poison City Records and releasing their debut self titled long player in 2017. They have since followed up with another 7” through Poison City titled Tell Them Where To Go/Choking To Choose in early 2018 as well as touring hard across the country. Recorded at the PBS FM Studio’s in Melbourne on the 6th of February 2018. Engineered by Alicia Saye and Paul Marbury.
One of Australia's most celebrated contemporary writers - medium regardless - Gareth Liddiard has told stories to divided but uniformly attentive audiences for over 20 years at this point. He penned a song voted by his peers to be the greatest Australian song of all time. He has a bevvy of acclaimed, modern-classic LPs under his belt through both The Drones and his time as a solo artist. And the most terrifying thing of all? He sound like he's only getting started, thanks to a new life at the helm of supergroup Tropical Fuck Storm. Ahead of their debut album release, Gaz fulfilled a Bar Bands pipe dream and came on the podcast to talk about his incredible career thus far. Tropical Fuck Storm's debut album, A Laughing Death In Meatspace, is out April 26 via TFS Records/Mistletone.
