Body Type - "Buoyancy" from the 2022 album Everything is Dangerous But Nothing's Surprising on Poison City Records. You never know when creative inspiration will strike, and for Australian quartet Body Type, it was over text. “'Buoyancy' started as a playful text message exchange between Annabel and me," bassist/vocalist Georgia Wilkinson Derums said of her bandmate, guitarist/vocalist Annabel Blackman. "In many ways, the song is about grappling with internal inconsistencies and moral ambiguities in an incoherent style. It's had a few iterations – when I brought it to the group it had more of a slow Big Star spirit. Soph and Annabel made it more angular, more tongue in cheek with the guitar, which further injects the song with distorted meaning. It's also a personal reminder that when certain things are rendered uncertain those you love are an eternal rudder.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Growing up in the concrete slabs of the Gold Coast, you can't always get what you want. It wasn't until Kate Cooper moved up north to Brisbane that she was truly able to get some degree of satisfaction. A mid-2000s stint at the helm of Iron On turned her into one of the country's cult indie darlings, which blossomed to a global scale with her next band, An Horse. Things were very very good for awhile there, but things also got very very real. Cooper doesn't hold anything back in discussing the highs and lows of her career at the tail-end of a national An Horse tour back in late February. Thanks to Sarah Thompson, Poison City Records, Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich, Damon Cox, the Factory Theatre and Paul McWhirter. Regurgitator: Brisbane’s own Regurgitator formed in 1994 originally as a side project for members Quan Yeomans (guitar, vocals), Ben Ely (bass, vocals) and Martin Lee (drums). Quickly signing to Warner, the band released 2 EP’s before their first full length Tu-Plang in 1996. Following up with Unit a year later, The ‘Gurge solidified themselves as Australia’s premier alternative rock band. A slew of ARIA’s, a new drummer (Front End Loaders’ Peter Kostic), a reality TV show, a best of and a whole heap of record sales followed. The band have released a total of 10 studio albums with their latest Headroxx released in August 2018 through Valve Records, a label run by longtime manager Paul Curtis. Recorded at The Tivoli on the 25th of August 2018. Recorded & mixed by Greg Jard. TV Haze: TV Haze are Dylan Stewart on guitar/bass/vocals, Andy Hayden on bass/guitar and Sarah Thompson on drums. Forming in 2015, the Melbournians have already released 3 albums over 18 months, the last of which, Circle The Sun, was released in April 2018 through Poison City Records. Their sound takes a soulful and nostalgic journey back into sepia-toned, hook filled indie rock. Recorded at Sonic Masala Fest on the 18th of August 2018. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic.
Horror My Friend: Recorded at the Woolly Mammoth Alehouse, 10th of January 2018. Recorded by Branko Cosic and mixed by Reuben Aptroot. Adelaide guitar heroes Horror My Friend summon the spirit of alternative rock and shoe gaze, whilst breaking new ground and embedding themselves firmly in the present. Consisting of Josh Battersby, Tom Gordon & Sam Kolesnik, the trio put out 2014’s A Million Hands EP before signing to Poison City Records and releasing their debut album Stay In / Do Nothing in 2016. During this time, Horror My Friend have supported likes of Die! Die! Die! (NZ), Pity Sex (USA), Violent Soho, The Cribs (UK) and Swervedriver (USA), as well as performing at Groovin’ The Moo, Yours & Owls Festival, Bigsound, Blurst of Times and Poison City Weekender. The band have followed up their debut with a string of critically acclaimed singles, all released through Poison City. Ultrafeedy: Recorded at the Triffid, 20th of July 2018. Recorded and mixed by Reuben Aptroot. Ultrafeedy are a 3 piece rock band hailing from Brisbane's northern suburbs. Since their self titled EP release in 2014, the band have been steadily honing their craft whilst putting on energetic live performances. 2017 saw the release of their first long player Aggressive Sincerity, paying homage to the 90’s socal punk and desert rock scenes.
Bench Press: Having burst onto the Melbourne scene in early 2016, Bench Press have earned a reputation for dynamic live performances. The quartet that consists of Lead vocalist Jack Stavrakis, guitarist Morgan Griffiths, bassist Lewis Waite and drummer Jordan Hicks released their self titled debut through Poison City Records in 2017. Since then they have played alongside label mates Clowns and Batpiss as well as Horace Bones, Turnpike and Moody Beaches. Recorded at the PBS FM Studio’s in Melbourne on the 8th of February 2018. Engineered by Alicia Saye and Paul Maybury. MOD CON: Originally playing as the alt-country band Palm Springs, MOD CON is the collaborative project of Erica Dunn, Sara Retallick and Raquel Solier. “Do It Right Margo” - The first single from this new incarnation was released in late 2017 via Poison City, and the band have been on the rise ever since, putting out their debut LP Modern Convenience in the first half of 2018. Recorded at PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 9th of February 2018. Engineered by Katie Harrington and Paul Maybury.
Tropical Fuck Storm. TFS is what some would consider an Australian supergroup, consisting of Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin (The Drones), Lauren Hammel (High Tension) and Erica Dunn (Harmony/Palm Springs). The band made their live debut across the US in late 2017 supporting Band Of Horses and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. With only a trio of singles released since then, TFS are poised to release their debut album in mid 2018. Recorded at the PBS FM Studio’s in Melbourne on the 8th of February 2018. Engineered by Alicia Saye and Paul Marbury. Cable Ties: Cable Ties are vocalist and guitarist Jenny McKechnie (also of Wet Lips), bassist Nick Brown, and drummer Shauna Boyle. They take the 3 minute punk burner and stretch it past breaking point. Their first show was in 2015, playing a backyard in Melbourne as part of the inaugural Wetfest, an annual gig that showcases some of the best emerging women-led and gender non-conforming acts from the Melbourne music scene. Since then they have given us a handful of 7 inches before signing with Poison City Records and releasing their debut self titled long player in 2017. They have since followed up with another 7” through Poison City titled Tell Them Where To Go/Choking To Choose in early 2018 as well as touring hard across the country. Recorded at the PBS FM Studio’s in Melbourne on the 6th of February 2018. Engineered by Alicia Saye and Paul Marbury.
It's amazing to have any time at all with Sarah Louise Thompson. Better known among friends as Thomo, the beanie-toting Melburnian divides her time between affairs of Poison City Records and bringing up the rear of the beloved Camp Cope. Still, miraculously, a window was found in which to share Thomo's story - which, prior to Camp Cope's formation in 2015, hadn't involved her playing music for over half a decade. From a Hole-obsessed kid in Kiama to Skinny's in Brisbane and everywhere in-between, it's time to hold onto your wool-hats and get out your air drums: Thomo's on the podcast. Cheers to Babymachine for their musical accompaniment (ie. soundcheck) during this episode. Camp Cope are performing at the Forum Theatre in Melbourne with Cash Savage and the Last Drinks and RVG. Clowns: Clowns have been on a steady rise since releasing their debut album “I’m Not Right” in 2013 via Poison City Records. The Melbourne 4-piece followed it up in 2015 with their second record “Bad Blood”. This took them to international stages across Europe as well as generating a bigger following back home, supporting the likes of Bodyjar, Frenzal Rhomb and Poison Idea. In 2017, Clowns released their third record “Lucid Again” to critical acclaim, with the addition of Brisbane's own Hanny-J on bass guitar and playing sold out dates across the country. Recorded at The Zoo in Brisbane on the 9th of June 2017. Recorded and Mixed by Reuben Aptroot. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 8th of October 2017. "I should warn you," prefaces Lincoln Le Fevre of Lincoln Le Fevre and the Insiders at the start of his third album, Come Undone: "I'm not built to last." Still, if his two decades and change of playing music prove anything, it's the complete opposite. Whether rousing a pub full of punks with his sing-alongs or playing hardcore punk in Outright, Le Fevre has constantly found new ways to keep his musical endeavours interesting and engaging. His journey takes him from the school hall to the bar and all the way across to the mainland, where the ex-pat Tasweigan now calls home. While playing Sydney with Outright for Damnation 2017, Le Fevre took some time in the park next to the Red Rattler to shoot the shit and give one of the most honest, interesting chats this podcast has ever seen. The Nation Blue: Born in Tasmania in 1996, The Nation Blue have spent the past two decades putting on the most intense live performances and writing about some of the bleakest subjects about living in Australia that most people are afraid to touch upon. The 2000’s were quite busy for the band, pumping out 4 albums and touring relentlessly around the country and overseas. The members took a break from the band in the early 2010’s to play in other projects such as Harmony, High Tension & King Cannons. After agreeing to get back together to record a song for the Tym Records 7” singles club in 2013, they started to slowly fill up a bag with songs and themes that they wanted to sing about. Over two sessions between 2015 to 2016, they escaped to a hall in Kyneton, Victoria with Mike Deslandes and recorded 30 songs, which turned into two albums that were released on the same day in October 2016 through Poison City Records, titled , Black and Blue. Recorded at Crowbar in Brisbane on the 15th of October, 2016. Reocrded by Reuben Aptroot & mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 2nd of April 2017. From the leisure coast to the inner west, Amy Wilson and Flyn Mckinnirey have come a long way - and we're not just talking Bulli Pass here. Through early individual projects like Ohana and Little a, the two musicians developed a taste for truly alternative music and have continued to pursue it further down the rabbit hole through their band Mere Women. Now, they are one of the single most impressive indie bands in the country, with an enviable live show and a powerful string of songs. Before a show at Black Wire Records, the two talked about their upbringing, being an up-and-comer in your 30s and why they're not as scary as their music might make you think they are. Mere Women's latest single, "Drive," is out now via Poison City Records. https://poisoncityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/drive-single The band's last show of the year will be at DARKER PARTY in Brisbane on December 16th. https://www.facebook.com/events/217050782050549/ This podcast is brought to you by Spit the Dummy Records. http://spitthedummyrecords.bigcartel.com Follow Mere Women on Twitter: @Mere_Women (@merewomen on Instagram) All My Friends Are in Bar Bands on Twitter: @BarBandsPod David on Twitter and Instagram: @DJYwrites
Infinite Void: Infinite Void's name might have you thinking black metal, but the Melbourne quartet are firmly planted in atmospheric punk and post-punk, taking cues as much from the members' past punk bands as from the smudged sonics of My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division and Pornography-era Cure. They released their debut self-titled album through Poison City Records in 2012 and had Steven Smith from Scul Hazzards manning the desk for the sessions, and since them have released some very rare split 7” records to keep the ball rolling. Recorded live at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on the 17th of February, 2016. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Screaming Females: Mixing equal parts Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater-Kinney, the Brunswick trio of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), Michael Abbate (bass), and Jarrett Dougherty (drums) strives to embody the spirit of indie rock in its purest form; Screaming Females book their own shows and self-released many of their own records to bring their guitar-driven rock to the people without compromise. In 2007 the band fired its opening shot, self-releasing its debut full-length, Baby Teeth. The band quickly followed up with its sophomore album, What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.?, which was self-released and later reissued by Don Giovanni Records, with whom the band has enjoyed a good relationship. Between 2010 and 2012, Screaming Females released their fourth album, Castle Talk, and followed up with their fifth album, the Steve Albini-engineered Ugly, in 2012. The band teamed up with producer Matt Bayles to record its 2015 studio effort, Rose Mountain and embarked on a tour that saw them travel to Australia for the first time, from which the set you’re about to hear derives from. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 8th of August 2016. Engineered by Jeremy Smith. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 6th of November 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
You may know Tom Lyngcoln for his years of service at the helm of The Nation Blue, one of the most high-octane and zero-bullshit rock bands this country has perhaps ever seen. You may know him from Harmony, the heaven-and-hell garage-blues monstrosity that simultaneously inspires and terrifies. In more recent years, you may have also seen him fronting Pale Heads with mates from The Drones and Batpiss. Hell, you just might know him as the guy that bled on you at a show once and then stuck his guitar in the ceiling. Whatever your experience with the man, you can't deny his presence or his vitality as a performer. With The Nation Blue back in action after years in the wilderness, Lyngcoln told some stories amidst the noise and madness of the final day of the Poison City Weekender. Listen in as Lyngcoln tells of hating Nick Hodgson, driving highways through the night at 170km/h and a gig he only remembers as "the blood show." The Nation Blue's two new albums, Black and Blue, are both available on October 14 via Poison City Records. The band are also touring this coming October and November. Gold Class: Starting in Melbourne in 2014, Gold Class have had a rapid rise to where they are today. In two years they have released a 7 inch, written, recorded and released their debut album ‘Its You’ via well known tastemaker label Spunk Records here in Australia, as well as scoring an international release through Felte Records for the US and Europe. Their sound has drawn comparisons to bands from the UK’s post-punk beginnings like Joy Division and The Cure. Recorded live at the PBS FM Melbourne Studios on 28th of December 2015. Recorded & mixed by Tom Strode. Pale Heads: Pale Heads are a punk rock super-power formed from several pieces of DNA from Melbourne’s underground scene including Tom Lyngcoln from The Nation Blue, Thomy Sloane from Batpiss, Rui Periera ex-The Drones, and Xiao Zhong ex-Bang! Bang! Aids!. They are fast, loud and straight to the point punk-rock, which has made it easy for them to slip into the roster of legendary Australian label Poison City Records for the release of their first album ‘Headless’ which was released in May 2015. Recorded live at the PBS FM Melbourne Studios on the 2nd of June 2015. Recorded & mixed by Alicia Saye. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 7th August 2016. Fear Like Us are a shining example of a Newcastle band: They're raw and passionate, the music is direct from the heart and they all now live in Melbourne. Although a band technically now for going on 12 years, it's taken the band a fair bit of their sweet-arse time to push beyond semi-activity. Before a ripper headlining show at Black Wire Records with friends of the show Run Squirrel, Canine and previous guests Burlap, we spoke with founding member Kim Wall and long-serving bassist Babor "Babs" Kaemmerling - each battling a classic Newie hangover - about where they come from, their driving forces and what it means to be an up-and-coming touring band in your 30s. Mere Women: Starting off in 2011, Mere Women create a dark, and dreamy style of tunes best described as post punk goth pop. Wasting no time in sharing their gloomy tunes with the world they have released two full albums with the legendary label Poison City Records, the latter of which was recorded in an ill lit moderately repurposed cold storage unit that helps truly capture the vibe they are dishing out. Recorded live at Brighton Up Bar in Sydney as part of the Volumes Festival on the 29th August 2015. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Blank Realm: Made up of three siblings and a spiritual brother, Blank Realm have been kicking around since 2008. Starting off as an improvised noise group, the band have truly refined their sound over their 8-year life span into a careful concoction of erratic noise and unforgettable hooks. Much like their albums, their live shows have a continually growing reputation for being utter chaos and strangely mesmerizing at the same time. Unafraid to throw in a curve ball and hit a few strange notes, Blank Realm will always keep you guessing. Recorded live at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney as part of the Volumes Festival on the 29th of August 2015. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 5th June 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
It's party time! Anty Horgan and Craig Selak have been raising hell since their school days, flying through puerile teenage bands and dreaming of the big time. They began the journey by borrowing the name of a pop superstar, but it's as The Bennies that they've carved their niche as one of the most exciting and fun-loving live bands this great southern land has to offer. With a half-hour between dinner and tearing Melbourne's Corner Hotel a new one, the band's bass-ing, singing and synth-ing half talked through a brief history of their love of music and a highlight reel of their remarkable rise over the past few years. The Bennies' new single, "Party Machine," is available now via Poison City Records: https://poisoncityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/party-machine-single The band's third studio album is due for release in the first quarter of 2016. A dislocated shoulder and a few happy accidents lead a punk part-timer into the role of the lifetime - the driving force of The Smith Street Band, who have evolved into one of the country's most respected and beloved contemporary rock bands. Chris Cowburn might not be up-front - either literally or figuratively - but he's been a part of the band since its formation, and has also moved into various managerial roles as well as founding his own label, Jackknife Music. At the top of another national tour, Chris shared his tales of unexpected European shenanigans, finding a home in Poison City and taking the world on one sweaty club show at a time. The Smith Street Band have just released a new single, "I Scare Myself Sometimes," featuring the vocals of Lucy Wilson of The Sugarcanes. The 7-inch can be purchased via Poison City Records here: http://poisoncityestore.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-smith-street-band-i-scare-myself-sometimes-7 The band end their national tour with a show tonight in Byron Bay and two sets at the Yours & Owls Festival in Wollongong on the 3rd and the 4th. He's the tall man with the tan. The high-five giver. The king that said "Don't fuck with our dreams." He's also one of the nicest guys in Australian music. Intrepid adventurer with The Bennies, punk rock veteran and expert high-five giver "King" Jules Rozenbergs has been doing things his way since day one.
