Tune in here to this Thursday edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking with USMC veteran, Commandant Tom Gordon from The Military Academy of South Carolina, better known as the Citadel, about people who get to sit in the emergency row on airline flights that get a little extra leg room and a lot more responsibility. They discuss flight 1549 that was struck by a bird, disabling one of the plane's engines, resulting in its emergency landing in New York's Hudson River. Commandant Gordon uses this story to discuss leadership and keeping calm under pressure. Coincidently, the man who found himself in the emergency row on this day was Citadel alumnus Mark Hood. This highlights the Citadels key goal of developing resilient and virtuous leaders to fill the gaps in modern society. For more wisdom from Commandant Gordon check out his book "Marine Maxims: Turning Principles into Practice." Listen here for all of this and more on The Brett Winterble Show! Reflecting on your time at The Citadel, how do you believe the institution's emphasis on discipline and honor has influenced your leadership style and decision-making throughout your military career? What were some of the key leadership challenges you encountered while commanding 1st Tank Battalion and how have these experiences shaped your leadership approach and growth as a military leader? As a graduate of The Citadel, how do you perceive the institution's role in shaping future leaders, particularly in instilling values such as discipline, integrity, and service? Don't want to restrict this to just the military – our young Alumni are in high demand and I have some theories why Considering our shared alma mater at The Citadel, how do you assess the institution's adaptation or consistency in upholding its values and training methods over the years, and how has this impacted the development of military leaders? I will focus my response on the character crisis in this country and how The Citadel develops character as the cure. Your Book: Marine Maxims: Turning Leadership Principles into Practice (Scarlet & Gold Professional Library) . Could you share what inspired you to publish a book and how did it come about? Your book has 50 lessons about turning principles into practice, any of those resonate within the Corps of cadets?

There are 50 wards in Chicago, but more than 65,000 people living within its limits lack a home of their own - a group activist Carla Johnson refers to as the “51st Ward.”Our intrepid reporters: Jesse Betend, Streetwise Editor Suzanne Hanney, and Streetwise vendor A. Allen set out to track down Tom Gordon, the so-called “Mayor of Uptown” in hopes of discovering what's causing a rise in homeless camps throughout the city. What they find is a community formed in the absence of adequate city services, existing in a legal limbo, and often in conflict with both local leaders and their housed neighbors. But also an unmistakable family. Just who is Tom Gordon? And who exactly made him the Mayor, anyway? Meanwhile, the forming of a new tent city in a nearby park hits close to home, prompting difficult questions about what, at the end of the day, communities owe each other.Welcome to the 51st Ward.

Today's episode offers a different perspective on the DoNotPay controversy – and ended up having an unexpected twist. Earlier this year, DoNotPay, which described itself as the world's first robot lawyer, and its founder Joshua Browder became the subject of harsh criticism after paralegal Kathryn Tewson tested several of DoNotPay's self-help legal apps and concluded they were little more than smoke and mirrors – in some cases getting the law wrong, in others failing even to deliver the promised output. In the wake of Tewson's allegations, this podcast recorded an exclusive interview with Browder, in which he called the criticism “a bit of a nothingburger.” I followed that Interview with one with Tewson, in which she described in detail how she tested the DoNotPay products and responded to Browder's dismissal of her critique. Following those events, our guests today, Maya Markovich, executive director and cofounder of the Justice Technology Association and executive in residence for Justice Tech at Village Capital, and Tom Gordon, executive director of Responsive Law, an organization that represents the consumers' voice in the legal system, co-authored an op-ed in which they argued that reforms in the regulation of the practice of law, such as those implemented in Utah, could have prevented the DoNotPay debacle, since DoNotPay would have had to have been licensed and regulated. They submitted their op-ed to the American Bar Association's Center for Innovation, which agreed to publish it in the Center's biannual innovation trends report, slated to be released Aug. 1. In anticipation of that publication, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi recorded the interview you're about to hear with Markovich and Gordon, in which they discussed their op-ed and their views more broadly on regulatory reform. The interview was scheduled to post Aug. 1, in conjunction with the op-ed's publication that day. But then the plan hit an unexpected twist. Instead of publishing the op-ed that day, the Center notified the authors that it had canceled the publication because of what it described as “political challenges” within the ABA, but that it had neglected to inform them of that. Because this interview was recorded before the ABA canceled the op-ed, you will hear references to the ABA's publication of the op-ed. But since that never happened, Markovich and Gordon allowed us to publish the op-ed on LawNext. Ambrogi has also written a blog post detailing the whole sordid story. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is a somewhat overlooked King book about a young girl who gets lost in the Maine wilderness and must survive the elements and maybe even a cruel minor deity in the form of a savage bear as she either stumbles upon rescue or dies trying. A dyed-in-the-wool Red Sox fan, our young protagonist starts imaging her idol, Red Sox's closer, Tom Gordon, is there with her giving her advice along her journey.

Have you ever been lost in the woods? Did you immediately ball up in the fetal position and scream for help? Stephen King's, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon follows the story of Tricia McFarland, a nine year old girl who is lost in the woods with very few supplies and little water. Her only contact with the outside world is through her Walkman which is tuned into the Boston Red Sox and her favorite player, Tom Gordon. In this episode the Roamers debate fiction vs non-fiction, foraging for food, how hallucinations help with survival, and what they would listen to if they were only accompanied by a Walkman. What's on your lost in the woods mixtape?

Featuring: Lita Kalfas is the CEO and Founder of MTNSTUFF. Growing up in Ohio, Lita dreamt of a life surrounded by mountains, trees, and trails of Colorado. She loved the terrain, the hiking, the skiing, the beauty. As a history major from the University of Michigan with a passion for entrepreneurship, Lita found herself in Southern California, in a brief life detour, working in the electrical distribution industry. With a little luck, a few glasses of wine, and an invitation to join the rep agency of her brother-in-law, Tom Gordon, she packed her bags and moved to Boulder, CO, in 1994. At that time, Tom and she were pioneering a few small, unknown brands: Osprey Packs, Chaco Footwear, and Atlas Snowshoes, which dominate the outdoor industry today. Over the years, Mtn Stuff has grown quite a bit, and with Tom's retirement, Lita found herself at the helm of an agency with a dynamic and experienced sales team. The life she found as a rep in the outdoor industry is beyond any profession she could have imagined. What struck her immediately when she started were the people. The people with whom she works with, her team, retailers, and vendors have all been nothing short of wonderful. It seems as though she picked this industry because it's what she loves and loves to do: play in the outdoors. Lita loves to find the activities that can be done with her team, retailers, and vendors because it brings them all together to experience nature and the outdoors in its proper place and away from computers, registers, boxes, and polybags. Show Highlights: Lita Kalfas, the CEO and Founder of MTNSTUFF joins the show to chat about the growth of the outdoor industry, retail stakeholders, vendor relationships, differentiation in a crowded market, and the evolution of relevancy between retailers and a vendor. Kristin and Lita also dive into trade shows, buying patterns, developing relationships in the industry, pandemic pivots, lengthening the buy-sell cycles, and more! The largest takeaway from the show relates to where retailers are currently at. Returning to the early pandemic days, outdoor recreators multiplied as the outdoors became a safe haven. Retailers, larger brands, and .coms saw large surges in the space. While 2020 and 2021 saw immense growth, then came supply chain issues that have resulted in canceled orders, extensions in cancel dates, and more. Lita is hearing that supply chain issues will last into at least 2024, and orders are RELATED LINKS Lita on LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/leta-kalfas-7947a14 MTNSTUFF Website - mtnstuff.com Outdoor Market Alliance - outdoormarketalliance.org
In the latest episode of Hospitality Hangout, Michael Schatzberg “The Restaurant Guy'' and Jimmy Frischling “The Finance Guy'' chat with Tom Gordon, President and CEO of Slim Chickens Restaurants, to discuss, launching a fast-casual chicken concept, robotics, and why technology is key to survival.Gordon talks about the early days of his career. He shares that after college, armed with a finance and real estate degree, he was on the stockbroker track, but he quickly learned that he loathed the path. He decided to leave the world of Wallstreet for the restaurant industry, where he started waiting on tables and bartending. Gordon tells the guys that in 2001, he and his business partner, Greg Smart, began conceptualizing Slim Chickens, a fast-casual chicken tender restaurant. He shares memories of developing recipes in Smart's garage, along with their friends, who provided feedback on everything from breading, sauces, and sides. Gordon says, “You know we really are still tracking with the majority of stuff we put together back then in the garage. From the garage, we found our first spot, and the rest is, you know, 19 years of history.” Gordon shares some growth metrics around Slim Chickens, which officially launched in 2003. He says the brand currently has 170 units, including 23 International locations, and has plans to scale to 600 units by 2026.Frischling asks Gordon about the company's early adoption of technology and why it is a key to survival. Gordon talks about recognizing the importance of technology early on and embracing it. He says, “We were early adopters of better POS systems, digital menu boards, and being able to change products and LTOs on a quick pace and a quick run.” He adds, “I think the most consequential investment we made, and the thing we did was, we invested in a really robust app and loyalty system about a year before Covid showed up.” He talks about technology being table stakes for the future and shares how tech helped the brand sell, maintain comps, and communicate with their guests through Covid. He admits that without the technology being implemented early on, Slim Chickens would have been in a much different position today. He adds “That embracing of technology, app-based ordering, online ordering, curbside delivery through the app and then all the ancillary parts and pieces, I mean made the year 2020 for us, and made sure 2021 stayed on track and here we are in 2022.”Schatzberg talks about tech and innovation and asks Gordon to share more about the reactions employees are having to the food-running robots popping up in some of the Slim Chickens locations. Gordon shares that some franchises are testing the food-running robots and that they have been very open to embracing this type of technology. He says that while it's been fun for everyone to see the new robots, there were concerns from some team members who worried about the robots making mistakes, such as delivering food to the wrong table. However, once they saw the robot in action, working successfully over and over again, they realized the usefulness of such technology. Gordon is quick to point out that while robots are helpful, they aren't currently a complete replacement for people. He says, “Hospitality is hospitality. You got to take care of the guests, you got to seat people, and look them in the eyes and make sure they're happy. But I think this is an adaptable technology with the right footprint in a restaurant.” He adds, “It's a useful piece of the puzzle.”To hear Gordon's thoughts on automation, robotics, and more from his chat with Schatzberg and Frischling, check out this episode of The Hospitality Hangout on iTunes! This syndicated content is brought to you by Branded Strategic Hospitality.

I was recently recommended a new podcast from a fellow veteran and business owner, From The Green Notebook, and the first episode I listened to did not disappoint. The podcast website states, “Our host Joe Byerly will extract valuable lessons from some amazing people from all walks of life. We will discuss the importance of habits, mentorship, life-long learning, mindfulness, and the effects of ego on a team.” The episode that I listened to featured Marine Colonel and Author, Tom Gordon, and covers leadership concepts that can be applied to everyday life. I think there are some great takeaways from the episode so I wanted to share a few with you. The full episode will be linked below and I highly recommend you take the time to listen. Takeaway #1 - Who are you? vs Who am I? This is a great exercise that Colonel Gordon used with his military students to allow them the time and space for introspection with regards to who they are to the outside world versus who they really are to themselves. In the world of social media, I think this can be a powerful exercise for leaders, educators, and for students to examine who we are and who we want to be. Listen to the full episode or my podcast break down on the episode to see how Tom facilitated this exercise…it is difficult to write out the practice. Takeaway #2 - “Do not let the urgent get in the way of the important.” I really liked this quote from Colonel Gordon when he was discussing how to bring intentionality and structure to your day. Often as educators and leaders, it is easy to feel like everything is a priority and feel that we never have enough time to get it all done. This quote and follow-on discussion are powerful in our fight against allowing urgent, and more importantly, urgent and unimportant, tasks to get in the way of completing the important. If you want to learn more about how to classify your task I recommend learning more about the Eisenhower Matrix to help. Takeaway #3 - Five tasks to be completed daily When I heard these 5 tasks and how Colonel Gordon used them to hold himself and his subordinates accountable, I knew I had to share them with you. I think these can easily be adjusted to meet our educational needs and to be used with students of all ages. The 5 daily tasks are: Find a problem and fix it. Find subordinates/students doing a good job and thank them. Teach somebody something. Learn something. Ask someone how you can help them. These five tasks look simple when written, but I challenge you to accomplish them each day for the rest of the week. Once you have them mastered I encourage you to share with others and adapt them to your students and see how they do. Let me know how it goes. I hope these takeaways were meaningful to you as they were to me. I challenge you to take at least one of them and put it into practice. It is easy to read an article but hard to take action. Let's do the hard things! Listen to the full podcast here on Apple Podcast
