The fabric of the Edmonton community, impossible recreation, and top level quality. Michael Rault (Michael Rault, Pearl Charles) "The Edmonton-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter-producer began working on its songs in earnest after winding down the tour supporting his 2015 full-length Living Daylight, but getting to the point of having an album was a process. "Musically it came out of a period of dissatisfaction, creatively and personally, as I found myself pushing against the limitations of my abilities and approaches to making music." But those delays eventually paid off. As he was working on Tonight's songwriting, Rault kept entering the orbit of Wayne Gordon, the producer / head engineer at Brooklyn's legendary Daptone studio—first through opening stints for the late firebrand Charles Bradley, then while on tour with Aussie shredders King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Sending Gordon early sketches of some songs led to Rault heading to Daptone for what was initially going to be a two-week recording stint. Midway through that Gordon approached him about signing to the Daptone Records label's fledgling rock spinoff, Wick—and becoming the first Canadian member of the Daptone family. Signing with Wick also led to Rault finishing the record at Daptone and bringing Gordon on as co-producer." Cheap tuner pegs, digging deeper, and the return of the sausage breakfast sandwiches. Jimmy James (True Loves, Parlor Greens) "You could say that Parlor Greens are greater than the sum of their parts…however, the individual parts are simply stellar on their own. Tim Carman (GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Scone is perhaps the most tasteful living organist on planet Earth (and beyond) and to watch him play is to truly watch a master at work. He bends the organ to his will like a true mastercraftsman. He's a veteran of the soul revival scene, having played on many Daptone recording sessions since their inception, but also has learned from some of the legends of soul jazz: Melvin Sparks and The Turbanator himself Dr. Lonnie Smith. Jimmy James needs no introduction to many as he's been seen all over the world performing with instrumental groups The True Loves and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. Perhaps the most dangerous right hand in all of soul music, his signature funky approach can be identified by even the most novice of music fans, a feat most musicians could only dream of. Tim Carman. The backbone. The pocket. Having cut his teeth touring the world with blues group GA-20, Carman's expertise in the world of blues shuffles might make him an unlikely candidate to lay the foundation for the funky Parlor Greens, but this debut LP shows otherwise. Steady, heavy pockets and as funky as they come." Lee Fields is a funk and soul legend who has been recording for 55 years and performing for longer than that. From his roots in hardscrabble Wilson, North Carolina — where his parents ran a speakeasy on Saturday nights and took him to church on Sundays — through the funky 1970s, Fields honed an explosive live act frequently compared to James Brown. After a decade-long setback in the ‘80s, Lee signed with Desco Records (an early version of Daptone) and sparked a comeback that continues unabated to this day.

After six soulful albums and two EPs on Daptone Records, the New York collective The Budos Band are releasing their new EP Frontier's Edge via their own label, Diamond West. “It's just a natural growth,” said guitarist Tom Brenneck in a press release. “We're going further away from the sound of Daptone and into territory they probably wanted to stay away from.” That territory is still a psych-heavy instrumental one, inspired by old school R&B, as you can hear on today's Song of the Day. “Somehow, we wrote six songs in two days,” says drummer Brian Profilio. “Tom was able to take what we were doing and put it together in a cohesive manner.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After more than two decades, Lee Fields left the music industry and strongly considered opening a fish store. “What do you know about fish?” his wife asked. Very little, turns out. He did, however, know soul. In the late-60s, his performances had earned him the nickname “Little JB” – an homage to long-time hero, James Brown. Re-entering music in the 90s, Fields began experimenting with home recording, eventually attracting the attention of the Daptone scene. Last year, he and the label joined forces again, releasing Sentimental – a perfect showcase of the things that make him one of the remaining 60s soul greats. Hosted on Acast.

Soul is the most powerful expression of American music--a distinct combination of roots, migration, race, culture, and politics packaged together for your dancing pleasure. But if you thought the sounds of Motown or Stax Records died along with 8-tracks and macramé, you'd be wrong. For two decades, Daptone Records has churned out hard funk and such beautiful soul that these records sparked a musical revolution. Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Daptone's records--and those of the larger soul revival scene--pay homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever. It Ain't Retro: Daptone Records and the 21st-Century Soul Revolution (Jawbone, 2021) charts this revival's players, sounds, and tectonic shifts over the past twenty years, taking you from dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre's heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. This definitive tale of Daptone Records' soulful revolution chronicles the label's history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene's cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. The book also contains rare and unseen images of Daptone artists past and present, including Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, and more. Jessica Lipsky is a journalist and DJ from Brooklyn by way of the San Francisco Bay. She first encountered sweet soul music as a child by obsessively tuning her radio dial and has since extensively covered soul, funk, reggae, and alternative Latin music. Her work on the intersection of culture, music, and politics has appeared in NPR, Billboard, Grammy.com, Columbia Journalism Review, Vice, and LA Weekly. Jessica Lipsky on Twitter. After a small run of exalted singles and EPs, Polyswitch gravitates towards the full-length format with “PRAISE THE SUN“ a 13-track sonic testimonial showcasing his distinct sense of substantially blending a vibrant profusion of musical currents. Emanating from an expression of delight and adoration, “PRAISE THE SUN" can be used as a universal answer to questions like ‘What to do?' when there are no other solutions left. Reflecting the times, recorded during periods of duress and uncertainty, “PTS“ is a body of work conveying feelings of harmony, hope, love, and unity throughout 13 sublime musical works harkening back to the Jazz-funk fusion days with flavours of house, soul, hip-hop, and electronica mixed in. “PRAISE THE SUN" could very well be seen as a message of hope to a generation coming of age in a time of decay, collapse, institutional corruption, and societal change. Scheduled for release this month, Polyswitch shares a batch of his recent finds and go-to's that accompanied him navigating the process. ___ *00:00:00 – 02:00:00 / Polyswitch 1– Ahmad Jamal - Arabesque (Atlantic Jazz) 2– King Khan - Follow The Mantis (Ernest Jenning Record Co.) 3– Niko Tzoukmanis - Twinkle (Libreville Records) 4– Steve Bach - Rain Dance (Soundwings) 5– Cochemea - Al-Mu'tasim (Daptone) 6– Polyswitch - In Good Spirits (feat. Leon Michels grew up in New York, picking up the Saxophone while he was in high school. His teachers introduced him to early jazz from artists such as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. It was his encounter with the musicians that would go on to form "Budos Band" that introduced him to the world of deep funk and afrobeat, and from there Leon would go on to experiment with his own recordings, initially on a multitrack reel-to-reel recorder a friend had gifted him, and eventually to putting out his own music under the "El Michels Affair" moniker.Leon's career has also seen him work on projects for high profile artists such as "Lana Del Rey" and being sampled by producers working with "Beyonce".On this episode Jay and Jesse dive deeper into Leon's back catalogue as well as his approach and workflow to making music."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Daptone Records is a funk and soul indie record label based in Brooklyn, New York, most well known for their work with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley. The label was founded in 2001 by Bosco Mann and Neal Sugarman, who built their studio called Daptone's House of Soul in a converted two-family home in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. They decided not to use any digital programming and instead relied on old fashioned analog recording methods, including good old studio acoustics, which thus created the very distinctive sound of Daptone Records. The thunderous heart of Australia's greatest rock'n'roll band You Am I, drummer Rusty Hopkinson, dons his professor's cap and guides us through a potted history of garage rock and early psychedelia through the seminal Lenny Kaye compiled box set 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era' (1972). We talk about whether or not you need drugs to appreciate psychedelic rock, the ongoing musical conversation between Britain and the US, the influence of the record on some classic You Am I tracks, how this compilation helped birth punk rock and what is at the heart of all great rock'n'roll. Plus, Rusty recalls what it was like touring with the Replacements on their recent final shows, cutting the new YAI record at the Daptone studios in New York and why the band aren't purists.
