Ritu Bhasin, recently found herself the target of online hatred after a pundit on Fox News featured her in one of her diatribes. President of bhasin consulting inc., an award-winning speaker, author, and expert in diversity and inclusion, Ritu joins me today to discuss her experience receiving hate for trying to teach loving principles. In RBC's She's the Boss this week, I speak with Tracey Klettl from Painted Warriors, an outdoor adventure company that reconnects people to the land through wilderness education, hands-on training, Indigenous traditions, and stories. Tracey shares the origin story of Painted Warriors and how it became a popular experience for many through the pandemic. Anne Brodie joins me with a preview of three powerful films including Benedict Cumberbatch who unleashes Phil, a psychotic rancher Montana's Wild West circa 1925 in The Power of the Dog, Michael Keaton who plays Dr. Samuel Finnix in Disney+ Dopesick about the true story behind Purdue Pharmaceuticals and their massively addictive drug oxycontin, and Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd star in Apple+TV The Shrink Next Door which takes a look at the weirdly co-dependent relationship between a psychiatrist and his patient that spanned almost 30 years until a journalist exposed the truth. My next guest is a teacher, social justice advocate, gender bending, hat wearing, running shoe fanatic who loves to use sarcasm, wit and a little intelligence to educate the masses on her wildly popular Tiktok account Unlearn16. Joanna Johnson is dedicated to having the hard conversations without the anger and rage that stops so much of our dialogue today and joins me to discuss how she's teaching healthy debate in the classroom, and on TikTok. As part of What She Said's continued partnership with New Roots Herbal we're taking a closer look at our mobility today. Despite what you may have heard, joint pain and stiffness does not have to be a fact of life. There is so much that you can do to prevent it and even reverse it so that you can stay active and get back to doing what you love to do. Dr. Kaitlyn Richardson joins me to share tips for prevention, maintenance and recovery. Finally, gift giving is top of mind for all of us right now as the holiday season draws nearer and finding a gift with meaning is always challenging. Tina Fanzo, founder and owner for Fight for Five Charity Bracelets has a solution. Rich The Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ lawsuit against Purdue Pharmaceuticals exemplifies a common narrative that lays a large part of the blame for the opioid epidemic at the feet of the manufacturer of prescription opioids for manipulating physicians into prescribing the drugs more liberally.  Is there merit to that story? To examine that question, we have as our guest Jacob James Rich, a policy analyst at Reason Foundation.  Mr. Rich holds master’s degrees in economics and mathematics from Eastern Michigan University.  Prior to joining Reason, he conducted research for the Cato Institute focused on opioids and the drug war. According to the CDC, between 1999 and 2017 over 218,000 Americans died due to overdoses from prescription opioids--more than 3 times the number of Americans killed in Vietnam. A current Massachusetts court case alleges that Purdue Pharmaceuticals, the multi-billion dollar company that makes Oxycontin, continued to “turbocharge” sales of the drug while downplaying its extreme danger--for more than a decade after pleading guilty in 2007 to misleading regulators, doctors, and patients about the drug’s risk of addiction and potential for abuse. And yet in 2017, when the National Institutes of Health held meetings to combat the crisis, they turned to…Purdue executives for advice. This would be darkly comic if so many lives were not at stake—and the practice was not so common. Building on the ideas in his popular TED talk “In Praise of Conflict,” Jonathan H. Marks examines the widespread practice of public-private partnerships in “The Perils of Partnership: Industry Influence, Institutional Integrity, and Public Health.” Join us on “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI for a conversation with Jonathan H. Marks about why this troubling practice needs to stop.

I talk about some strife with working on my capstone (and about what the capstone is), and it ends up getting really dark when I start telling a story about a really bad car accident with some people I know that gave one of my friends PTSD. This and the next episode are still using the low-quality recorder, sorry, I'll be getting back to using my normal one soon. Sorry these are coming out so late as well, but their absurd length hopefully makes up for that. A little note here, since I recorded this a couple of days ago and there have been some potential changes to my project: I'm working on arranging a time that I can essentially do that same project, like I was going to do at the engineering companies, but at Purdue Pharmaceuticals, to observe the pressure the lawsuits are putting on the company right now. I'm really hoping that will work, because that would be perfect for me. After all, I basically wrote a novel about the same kind of story.
