How did a marketing campaign lead to one of the worst public health disasters in American history?  In this episode, I investigate the rise and fall of the Sackler family, the pharmaceutical empire they built, and the marketing tactics that got millions addicted to opioids. You'll learn: How reframing turned OxyContin from a last resort into a “safe” everyday drug. Why a vague letter (not a study) became the foundation for Purdue's 1% addiction claim. How the Sacklers used doctors, pain groups, and celebrities to exploit authority bias. Why repeating a false claim makes it more believable (feat. the mere exposure effect). How behavioural science helped sell a deadly drug—and what we can learn from it. --- Shatterproof non-profit: https://shatterproof.org/ Empire of Pain:  https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/612861/empire-of-pain-by-patrick-radden-keefe/ Sign up to my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew-22213187/ Watch Nudge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@nudgepodcast/ --- Sources: ABC News. The chief of the watchdog agency that protects federal workers and whistleblowers, Hampton Dellinger, was one of the first to be fired by President Trump. So were eighteen inspectors general and the chief of the board that protects federal workers. What is happening to independent watchdogs and why are they being dismantled? Correspondent Scott Pelley sits down with Dellinger and others to find out. Five years after it declared bankruptcy, Purdue Pharma and its wealthy owners, members of the Sackler family, have agreed to pay up to $7.4 billion in a proposed settlement that would deliver funds to victims of the opioid crisis. Correspondent Cecilia Vega investigates how this deal—potentially one of the largest opioid settlements ever—will affect the individuals and families who say Purdue's opioids harmed them. With the NCAA basketball tournament, famously known as “March Madness,” tipping off this month, the University of Connecticut men's team is aiming for a historic three-peat. Correspondent Jon Wertheim provides an inside look at coach Dan Hurley's preparations, his strategies for managing a changing roster, and his pre-season rituals.

It's dangerous to try to think like God. We can consult His Word, we can pray, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. We can also spend time around friends who are more spiritually mature than we are and we can do what we can to understand how God is working around us to build the kingdom. It's important for us to think about how God might view something, and increasingly so in relation to news events. What does God's Word say? Ephesians 5:15-2015 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.Leviticus 19:35-3635 “‘Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. 36 Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah[a] and an honest hin.[b] I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt.2 Timothy 1:77 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.1 Peter 5:33 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.Genesis 1:2626 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”1 Corinthians 12:26 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.Episode Links:AGENCY CAPTURE: Purdue at SCOTUS, George Watts v. Aneri is KFF Health News' award-winning senior correspondent. For the past two years, Aneri has been following the opioid settlement and the use of settlement funds. In June 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Sackler family could not claim immunity from lawsuits through the bankruptcy filing of their company, Purdue Pharma. This decision means the Sackler family is now vulnerable to civil suits and that the previous $4 billion settlement will likely be renegotiated. In this investigative non-fiction book, Patrick Radden Keefe reveals the role of the Sackler family in the prescription opioid epidemic that has decimated communities and families since the 1990s. Empire of Pain is an unflinching and horrifying account of how the Sacklers, aware of the drug's addictiveness, pushed Oxycontin through clever marketing to doctors, willful manipulation of the FDA approval process, lying about research, and demonizing those who became addicted. Linny and Nancy discuss the impact of the opioid crisis nationally and personally. Empire of Pain made the New York Times Readers' List of 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. During the 2023 New Yorker Festival, three legendary staff writers got together to discuss the craft of investigative journalism: digging for information like detectives, and then presenting it in a way to rival the best thrillers. For each of these writers, the “bad guy” —whose actions usually set the story in motion – needs to be presented in three dimensions; trusting the reader to grapple with that person's perspective is key to an engrossing story. “I look at these big, boring issues often, like economic inequality or corruption in politics,” Jane Mayer says. “You take a subject like campaign finance – the Citizens United decision and how it's corrupted politics. If you can find somebody like [Charles or David] Koch and explain there actually was a billionaire behind so much of this, and he has a story, and he has a family, and there are always screwed-up fathers and sons involved in these families. . . . It means that you're able to explain the ethical choices people make.” Mayer is best known for her book “Dark Money,” about the Koch brothers; David Grann wrote “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Wager,” both best-sellers; and Patrick Radden Keefe covered the Sackler family's opioid dynasty in “Empire of Pain,” and a murder during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in “Say Nothing.”  They were joined by their editor, The New Yorker's Daniel Zalewski.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in the first presidential debate tonight at 9 p.m. eastern time. They will be in Atlanta for the 90-minute event. The Supreme Court Thursday put the Environmental Protection Agency's “good neighbor” plan on hold while legal challenges continue. The air pollution regulation was aimed at reducing ozone emissions from upwind states. Three Republican-led states and the steel and fossil-fuel industries brought the lawsuit. The Supreme Court blocked Purdue Pharma's bankruptcy settlement, which would have shielded the Sackler family from lawsuits over their alleged role in the opioid epidemic. The Biden administration challenged the settlement, arguing it abused bankruptcy protections. The Supreme Court also decided that hospitals in Idaho can, for now, perform abortions in medical emergencies. The ruling came after the Biden administration sued Idaho's near-total abortion ban under the emergency medical treatment and labor act. The Pentagon announced it's investigating the effectiveness of the pier built by the U.S. military off the coast of Gaza. The pier has faced weather and security challenges since it was built in May, and has had to be re-anchored twice due to heavy seas. ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Hello Airheads! Up top we sort of diverted from a normal episode for a bit on account of CHO is down in his back and sorta got on one about pharmaceuticals and what not (this has reminded us that we REALLY need to cover the Sackler family... they got Boats that poop out other boats!) This also lead to a pretty candid discussion between Lord Trae and Professor CHO about Anxiety and Depression, but since they are who they are, they made it funny! Fret not, though, for we eventually got back to the heart of the show by discussing some old timey world records.. and a new one that, while impressive, is maybe not something MOST people would brag about lol Thank you for supporting our sponsors!
