Many Americans just assume vets always vote for the candidate who talks toughest about national defense, or offers strong positions on policies related to terrorism. While in some cases that may be true, the biggest question this year is still quite simple- Do vets favor Trump or Harris? A recent survey of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) members, offers an interesting glimpse at where this group stands, just days before the election.IAVA, CEO, and Army veteran Allison Jaslow reveals the survey results and shares how the survey breaks across categories like gender. The survey also tells a unique story about IAVA members, who are younger than other veteran groups, and after their service in Iraq/Afghanistan have often done the heaviest lifting during the Global War on Terrorism.More from IAVA here:https://iava.org/Check out Connecting Vets for more military news and veteran stories:https://www.audacy.com/connectingvetsConnect with CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggsphil@connectingvets.comFollow:@philbriggsVet@connectingvets See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Independent Political Strategist Bill Hillsman has masterminded some of the most effective and innovative election campaigns in the modern era. Hillsman first rocked the political world when he helped elect the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone in 1990 in one of the biggest political upsets in decades. In 1993, Hillsman took over a floundering Minneapolis mayoral campaign four weeks before election day, resulting in Sharon Sayles-Belton's election as the first African-American and the first woman mayor of Minneapolis, a city comprised of 85 percent white voters. He later shocked the world by helping Jesse “The Body” Ventura become Governor of Minnesota in 1998. When he joined independent candidate Ralph Nader during the 2000 election, his inventive campaign, created on a tiny budget, had the whole country talking and rethinking how we sell our politicians. He worked on independent campaigns for Arianna Huffington for Governor of California in 2003 and Kinky Friedman for Governor in Texas in 2006. And he created the groundbreaking and award-winning “Not There” television ad for Operation Truth (later Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) featuring Iraq veteran and amputee, Robert Acosta. Bill's innovative creative work has brought him a host of awards, including a Grand EFFIE for the Wellstone campaign. Both USA Today and Business Week named his Wellstone commercials the best political ads of 1990 and his Ventura commercials were honored with five POLLIE Awards from the American Association of Political Consultants. A master of effective TV Ads, marketing and branding, Bill is CEO of North Woods Advertising and has been working in independent politics for a generation–and understands independents better than anyone in America.  And for decades, Bill has been a man on a mission to change our political system. His book Run The Other Way is an eye-opening look at the political landscape with a cast of characters that includes Colin Powell, Ross Perot, Donald Trump, Kinky Friedman and Warren Beatty. And with independents in the driver's seat to determine the 2024 Presidential election (and the future of our country) Bill is a wise and experienced leader we all need to hear from.  He joins our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) in this latest episode to share what can be learned from Ventura's campaign 25 years later, how he defines an independent voter, how he sees them defining themselves, and gives an assessment of the entire independent movement landscape ranging from No Labels and Forward to Robert F Kennedy Jr and Cornel West. And Paul asks Bill who he thinks will win the election—and they talk a little baseball and more. No other show is digging into all things independent politics like we are.  Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by author, activist and social entrepreneur Paul Rieckhoff is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It has been 38 days since the terrible attacks in Israel by Hamas occurred. 38 days of horror. 38 days of pain and suffering. On all sides. The attacks on October 7th will be with us forever. And as Israel comes to grasp what that means, we could all use some perspective. For most Americans this conflict is just another in a string of never ending wars. A blip on a phone screen. Just another Tweet. It's easy to lose perspective.  But none of us can afford to lose perspective. Not when there are innocent children caught in the middle of all of it. And there's no better way to get perspective than to talk to somebody that's there. On the ground. In the thick of it. And so we are joined today by Eli Elefant. Eli Elefant, CEO of the Israeli firm Property & Building Corp.'s U.S. division. Born and raised in Israel, Elefant, served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from 1996 until 2002, most recently as a Special Forces officer. He fought in southern Lebanon in the late 1990s and during the second Palestinian intifada of 2000 and along the way, became an American citizen, philanthropist and advocate for veterans of all backgrounds. And while living in New York with his family, he has long served on the Board of Directors for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). He's been in the fight and he knows the terrain. Veterans Day has been a federal holiday, recognized each November 11, since 1938, but it means little for most Americans beyond a day off from work.  Attendance at Veterans Day events is regrettably low—and declining rapidly. And so is the veterans' population in America. The unfortunate reality that veterans understand is that the overall power and importance of Veterans Day is fading fast. Simultaneously, America continues to struggle to draw citizens to the polls to vote. Compared to most progressive democracies in the world, our turnout is shamefully low.  Your host, Army veteran and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) has a plan to change that—and help fix our broken election system at the same time. It makes a lot of sense, so as you get ready to head into your Veterans Day weekend (yes, it's Saturday) here's a little bonus episode with some patriotic and independent food for thought.  Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by author, activist and social entrepreneur Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. The Department of Veteran Affairs' report last year showing a staggering decline in suicides among military veterans seemed to bring encouraging news — still, that figure was disputed by advocates, who say the undercounting of suicides painted a rosier picture than reality offers. Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, joins Chuck to detail the state of veterans' mental health as the nation nears Memorial Day.

Fall is here. And it's crazier by the day. Trump drama, Ukraine war news, natural disasters, political dysfunction, election campaign warfare. It's something new and terrible every day. But there's one important issue you're not seeing in the news. Important enough that it has dedicated citizens sleeping outside the US Capitol in Washington tonight. It's called the “firewatch”.  And Matt Zeller (@MattCZeller) is leading it. Matt has been a regular on this show. He's an activist, an author and a conscience for America. He is one of the leading advocates for veterans, for Afghan allies, and for America. A combat veteran and Army Major that made it out of Afghanistan alive only because of the courage of his Afghan interpreter, Matt's been paying it forward ever since. He's the courageous Co-Founder of No One Left Behind, a Truman National Security Fellow, the author of Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan, and a top leader on the powerhouse team at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Matt first joined us to predict the collapse of Afghanistan after the US pullout for Episode 127 in August, 2021. Then again for Episode 138 in October, 2021. He came back a year later in August for Episode 182 in August, 2022 to update us on how bad it's gotten in Afghanistan. And to take us inside the historic PACT Act fight with Jon Stewart. And to preview the action that needed to be taken for our Afghan allies.  Now, that action is underway. Last week, along with leaders from the Afghan American, humanitarian and veterans community, Matt started a new firewatch. That means he started a campaign of activists sleeping 24/7 outside the capital until the Afghan Adjustment Act is passed.  This is democracy at work. This is democracy evolving. This is good trouble. This is the opposite of January 6th. If you were disgusted by that. You'll be inspired by this. This is hope. And as we say all the time, hope is the oxygen of democracy. And it's time for a big dose of it. Sometimes, the good guys and gals win. Sometimes, the bad guys lose. This is one of those times. The historic SFC Heath Robinson PACT Act for veterans passed the Senate by a vote of 86-11.  But it was wild, it was emotional, it was dramatic, it was infuriating, and it was inspiring. It showed what is still possible in America if a group of concerned citizens are united, focused and motivated. And in this episode, we'll take you inside one of the most dramatic and important political dramas in years.  Our guest in this episode was a key leader in making that victory happen. When, Senator Pat Toomey and the other Republican Senators that stood in the way of the PACT Act, he united the troops, stood alongside Jon Stewart, helped to rally an unstoppable force of veterans, and ultimately emerged triumphant. He's a true leader and one we're proud to call a friend of the show. He's a humanitarian, an activist, and a badass superhero: Matt Zeller (@MattCZeller). Matt is one of the leading advocates for veterans, for Afghan allies, and for America. Matt is the courageous Co-Founder of No One Left Behind, aTruman National Security Fellow, the author of Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan, and the newest member of the powerhouse team at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Matt joined us on this show for Episode 138 and Episode 127 to sound the alarm about the imminent collapse of Afghanistan and the chaos that would follow. And now he's back to break down the fight for the PACT Act–and update us all on the terrible state of Afghanistan one year after the disasterous American withdrawl. Matt was part of the veterans “Fire Watch”, a group of advocates camped out on the Senate steps pressuring the hold-out senators to pass the PACT Act. They served as America's conscience–and inspired people worldwide. Matt has been on countless TV and radio shows, inside the chamber for the pivotal vote, and he's somehow, still standing. First and foremost, I would like to give my thanks to the veterans who have served and to the families of veterans who have served on this Memorial Day. There are links in the episode notes for those of you who might be struggling to find your way back home from your service. Remember, there is no weakness in seeking help–there is only strength in the recognition that we accomplish the most as a species when we work together. So, if you need help; reach out for it. It is there for you. Now, as for the podcast information: there is not going to be a full episode this week. I have been away for a few days at a family member's wedding. I just couldn't get the editing finished for the episode, and I didn't want to rush it. This next episode is going to be epic–as the kids like to say. It focuses on a book by clinical psychologist Dr. John Rosegrant and his reading of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Honestly, it's a fascinating conversation. I enjoyed it very much and I'm looking forward to bringing it to you all next week. So, hit the subscribe/follow button and turn on notifications so you can be in the know for when it goes live next week. Until then, try to keep one foot firmly planted on neutral ground, and have a great day. “We can't help everybody…but just knowing that you were able to be part of somebody's future and helping them escape. Who knows, that person could be the person that cures cancer.” - Quan Nguyen Quan Nguyen is a leader of action. And a true helper. And when the war in Ukraine started, the American combat veteran left his family in Utah, got on a flight, and linked up with a friend in Lviv to do what he could to help. He's put down his rifle, risked his life, and is now helping children who are refugees from war like he once was long ago. He's founded a new non-profit, called Task Force 824, named in honor of Ukraine's Independence Day (8/24). Led by Quan, Task Force 824 is a non-profit of non-sanctioned individuals working together to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainian citizens affected by the recent Russian invasion. They are transporting refugees to safety and delivering supplies to safe houses in Ukraine.  Quan Nguyen has had an amazing life journey. As a young boy, he fled Vietnam and lived in a refugee camp for over a year. He and his family would find refuge in America. And Quan would grow up and go on to serve in the Marine Corps as an infantryman with combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After returning home from combat, he built his own small business and worked in technology for two decades. And he continued his life of service. He supported his fellow veterans as a Deputy Director for the Western Region for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and with other nonprofits. When IAVA kicked off a groundbreaking national tour to combat suicide with legendary rock band Linkin Park, it was Quan that led the way. For an entire national tour with Mike Shinoda and the late Chester Bennington and the band, in dozens of cities, he worked with the crew to promote awareness, host veterans, share mental health resources, and save lives.  Quan is an old friend and colleague of our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), and joins us for a session just recorded from inside Kyiv-–as the city continues to await an imminent Russian assault. Quan spoke to us as artillery rounds fired off behind him, and air raid sirens and the threat of missile attacks swirled all around. An unknown number of American veterans have heard the call and boldly volunteered to join the fight in Ukraine. Matt Gallagher (@MattGallagher0) is one of them. Utilizing what he learned as a US Army Scout Platoon Leader in Iraq, Matt spent the last few weeks training Ukrainian civilians in how to fight and survive in Lviv. But Matt is not just any veteran. He is the internationally-recognized author of the novels Empire City and Youngblood, the class Iraq war memoir Kaboom, and a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. His work has appeared in Esquire, ESPN, The New York Times, The Paris Review and Wired. He's also co-editor of the short fiction collection Fire & Forget: Short Stories from the Long War. He's a popular, funny and insightful voice—including on Twitter–on everything from politics and war to his beloved Cleveland Browns.  Matt just left Ukraine, and joined our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) for an exclusive interview via Zoom from just across the border in Poland. Matt is an old friend of Paul's, a former Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) colleague, and one of his favorite voices in the public square. This is Matt's first extended media interview after his harrowing experience and brief appearance on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 with fellow American vets Adrian Bonenberger and Ben Busch. He shares what it was like to train brave local students, lawyers and police officers from ages 16 to 60 to kill Russians–using antiquated weapons and no body armor. Matt is part of the first wave of American veterans that have entered Ukraine and could have a profound impact on the way America and the world views the war.  Why did he go? What did he see? Who were the people he was training to use AK-47's and kill enemy tanks? What do the Ukraine forces he trained need? What's Matt's message for Biden? And for you? History is unfolding all around us and Matt will be a voice to help us understand it. He'll also share ways that you can take action–by supporting Razom–a support non-profit in Ukraine.  Matt was featured in Vanity Fair as one of the voices of a new generation of American war literature. In 2017, Senator Warren read Matt's Boston Globe op-ed “Trump Rejects the Muslims Who Helped Us” on the Senate Floor.  A graduate of Wake Forest and Columbia, Matt is a 2021-23 fellow with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, based in Oklahoma. He lives with his wife and sons in Tulsa and works as a writing instructor for NYU's Words After War program– devoted to bringing vets and civilians together to study conflict literature.  Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. Sebastian Junger is an American journalist, author, and filmmaker. He is well noted for his 1997 book, The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea, and with the success of this non-fiction book, Junger was touted as a new Hemingway. His work stimulated renewed interest in adventure non-fiction. The book received a large pre-publication deal for movie rights, was on the New York Times bestseller list for a year in the hardback edition, and for two years in paperback. Alongside British photographer Tim Hetherington, Junger created The Other War: Afghanistan, produced with ABC News and Vanity Fair. It was shown on Nightline in September 2008 and the two men shared the DuPont-Columbia Award for broadcast journalism for the work. His book, War revolves around a platoon of the US Army173rd Airborne stationed in Afghanistan. Junger, along with Hetherington, used material gathered in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan for the book and to create a related documentary feature, Restrepo. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won the Grand Jury Prize for a domestic documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. On April 27, 2011, Junger was presented with the "Leadership in Entertainment Award" by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) for his work on Restrepo. Junger's book, Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, was published in May 2016. Tribe studies war veterans from an anthropological perspective and asks, "How do you make veterans feel that they are returning to a cohesive society that was worth fighting for in the first place?" Junger's premise is that "Soldiers ignore differences of race, religion, and politics within their platoon..." and upon return to America, find a fractious society splintered into various competing factions, often hostile to one another. In Junger's latest book, Freedom, he uses personal experience gathered while on an expedition along the east coast railroad lines along with history to examine human nature as it searches for the balance between community and freedom. This week, U.S. Army veteran and original FourBlock alumnus Andy Roberts reflects on his recent experience in the healthcare industry transitioning from his role in human resources, mergers and acquisitions to working on the ground and rapidly standing up testing sites in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Andy joins FourBlock Founder Mike Abrams to discuss his role in the healthcare space, share advice for how to successfully merge organizational cultures, and recount how his experience in the Army has informed his work in the civilian world. Andy Roberts is currently a Senior Advisor in HR Emergency Management for Northwell Health in Lake Success, NY. At the time of this recording, Andy was serving as the Director of Human Resources, Mergers & Acquisitions for Northwell Health, the largest provider of healthcare in New York and one of the largest in the United States. In this role, Andy is responsible for leading the post-deal integration of hospitals and large practices that join Northwell, which includes the alignment of culture, processes, structure, policy and technology. During the pandemic outbreak of 2020, he was tasked with standing up COVID-19 testing sites for Northwell Health and helped manage the rollout of antibody testing, which enabled 45,000 team members to be tested in about two weeks' time. He is now standing up a new department at Northwell dedicated to emergency management within human resources operations. Andy previously served as the Director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services for Northwell Health, during which time he oversaw a variety of programs that cared for military veterans and their families. Prior to working for Northwell, he served as the Deputy Director of the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs and as the Membership Associate for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Andy is a graduate of West Point and former Army Officer who deployed to Iraq from 2003-2004. In Iraq, he served with the 4th Infantry Division as a battery commander of about 90 soldiers. He is the recipient of numerous military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Badge.     ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace.
