Our guest today is Janice Engel, the director of an amazing documentary film Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins. Who is Molly Ivins, some of you may ask? Molly Ivins (1944-2007) was a famous Texan journalist and libertarian, who changed the space of journalism in the US. Using her witty persona and writing, she was challenging corruption and injustice wherever she saw them. But she was also an amazing cook and her recipes even ended up in a book! Raise Hell premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, won the Audience Award at SXSW and numerous other festival awards. You can watch it on Hulu, stream it through Magnolia Pictures, or Modern Films if you are in the UK. In this episode Janice Engel and I talk about who the current Molly Ivins might be, why Texas is the blueprint for America, and how our society has become polarized to this extent. Janice is also a passionate foodie herself and I can't wait to taste her famous spicy fig jam! "We have a shared humanity that we need to start embracing. We have one planet. And if you all want to go to Venus, have fun with it." - Janice Engel Time Stamps: 00:50 - Who our guest is, and who Molly Ivins was. 2:28 - The trailer for Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins. 4:40 - Showcasing Texas Real Food website. 9:00 - Janice Engel deputizes me. 11:32 - Is there a current Molly Ivins? 17:00 - Why Texas is the blueprint for America. 22:44 - How Janice experiences the divide in America. 27:50 - How America looked like post WWII and the roots of today's divisions. 34:30 - The root of conspiracy theories in inequity. 39:00 - Education and massive middle class as a precondition for a healthy democracy. 44:20 - How eugenics started in America and not in Germany. 48:00 - Where food trucks in Austin disappeared and how much food businesses were affected by the pandemic. 52:32 - How America never experienced the horrors of wars on its territory. 55:00 - Janice's passion for food and her favourite food places in Austin. 58:05 - What Janice's last meal would be. 1:03:50 - Regenerative farming vs. factory farming. 1:09:35 - How Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins was received and the awards it won. 1:10:34 - How Molly was an amazing cook. 1:16:40 - Janice's famous spicy fig jam. 1:17:55 - Where people can see the Molly Ivins movie. Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins tells the story of media firebrand Molly Ivins, six feet of Texas trouble who took on the Good Old Boy corruption wherever she found it. She knew the Bill of Rights was in peril, and said "polarizing people is a good way to win an election and a good way to wreck a country." Molly's words have proved prescient. This week's episode features a conversation with Janice Engel and Carlisle Vandervoort, director and producer of the award-winning documentary ‘Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins” being released in the UK just in time for the upcoming US elections. Molly Ivins, a columnist, was dubbed “six feet of Texas trouble”. She took on the ‘Good Old Boy' corruption wherever she found it—most notably through her razor sharp attacks against President Bush, father and son. Her wit left both left-wing and right-wing laughing, and wanting more of her writing. Molly knew the Bill of Rights was in danger, and she said at the time: "Polarizing people is a good way to win an election and a good way to wreck a country." Her words could not ring more true today.Janice and Carlisle share the story behind making their documentary about Molly, from knowing instantly this was the subject to go forward with to trying to raise funds to make a movie about a progressive journalist in the pre-Trump era. They talk about the passion needed to bring such a project to fruition, and share the lessons they've drawn from Molly's wisdom and life journey.—————Visit:TBIF: thebrandisfemale.comTD Women Entrepreneurs: td.com/ca/en/businessbanking/small-business/women-in-business/Follow us on Instagram: instagram.com/thebrandisfemale

Documentary filmmaker Janice Engel is the director and producer of “Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins.” She’s a really cool woman who made a movie about a really cool woman, and Christy was so happy to chat with her for the latest A La Carte. Janice talks about growing up in Massapequa on Long Island, New York, where her father fostered her early love of classic movies; how curiosity was a driving force from a young age; studying film at USC, then marrying her interests in journalism and filmmaking by directing and editing music documentaries; her fascination with subcultures, including the Miss America pageant and bodybuilders; and how humbling it is when people let her into their lives to tell their stories. She also discusses her work as a showrunner on the TV series “Addicted,” and, of course, the Molly Ivins doc, which is available through streaming. Janice has had so many fascinating experiences and she shares great insights. Listen and enjoy.

The documentary cinematographer is a special kind of cinematographer. Whereas in narrative, the role is more defined, DP’s of the more truthful persuasion may find themselves piling on more hats than their fiction bound counterparts. Take it from David Paul Jacobson of Ask Dr. Ruth and Kristy Tully of Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins, two Sundance caliber cinematographers who join us on today’s show. Both of their projects revolve around strong women. Ask Dr. Ruth chronicles the incredible life of Dr. Ruth Wertheimer, a Holocaust survivor, former soldier, immigrant and two-time divorcee who became the world’s most influential sex therapist. Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins memorializes the former journalist who made a name for herself as rough talkin’ six foot Texan who was quick to expose corruption wherever she found it. Together in this roundtable we talk about how to grab the most effective b-roll, the perfect kits for the job, and not overstepping boundaries with directors and editors as you must also direct and edit yourself.
