Top Stories for December 9th Publish Date: December 9th PRE-ROLL: DTL HOLIDAY From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, December 9th and Happy Birthday to John Malkovich I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Neighborhood Christmas Train Experience rolls into holidays to help benefit Norcross Co-op North Gwinnett Co-op in need of donations for annual Santa Shop Toy Drive Gwinnett's budget hearing draws few speakers, but feedback still accepted All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia - Villa Rica Wonderland Train STORY 1: Neighborhood Christmas Train Experience rolls into holidays to help benefit Norcross Co-op The fourth annual Neighborhood Christmas Train Experience isn’t just about trains—it’s about giving back. Held at 3135 Repps Miller Road in Norcross, this massive holiday display supports Neighborhood Cooperative Ministries, a nonprofit helping families in crisis. “Last year, we raised $11,000,” said organizer Jonathan Galucki. “This year, we’re aiming for $15,000—and we’ve got a matching grant lined up.” The event runs Dec. 13, 14, 20, and 21, with tickets starting at $8. Expect nearly a dozen trains, a LEGO Christmas City, and an interactive Engineer Training Center where kids can run their own trains. Live music, festive vibes, and even a Buffalo Bills watch party? It’s all here. Visit neighborhoodchristmastrain.com for details. STORY 2: North Gwinnett Co-op in need of donations for annual Santa Shop Toy Drive The North Gwinnett Co-Op pulled off a miracle earlier this year, keeping families fed during the food-stamp crisis caused by the federal shutdown. But that effort came at a cost—plans for their annual Kristen Mullen Santa Shop had to take a back seat. “We fed families twice in November and gave out over 600 holiday meals,” said Executive Director Kim Phillips in a heartfelt Facebook video. “But now, we’re behind on toys for the Santa Shop.” The shop, which lets parents choose gifts for their kids with dignity, needs unwrapped toys by Dec. 12—especially sensory toys and gifts for teens. Visit ngcoop.org to help. STORY 3: Gwinnett's budget hearing draws few speakers, but feedback still accepted The public hearing for Gwinnett County’s proposed $2.6 billion 2026 budget? Quiet. Not a single taxpayer showed up to speak. Instead, community leaders—library board, health board, Mosaic Georgia—took the mic to thank commissioners for their expected funding. But here’s the gist: the budget is $66 million leaner than 2025’s, with Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson applauding department heads for trimming costs. “They worked hard to find efficiencies,” she said. Where’s the money going? Public safety and public works dominate—new police HQ, fire station relocations, 911 upgrades, road repaving, and even drones for mall patrols. Want to weigh in? Submit comments online by Dec. 31. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets - Sugar Hill Holiday STORY 4: 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' coming to Red Clay Music Foundry Dec. 13 Even after all these years, Jeffrey Bützer still loves playing *A Charlie Brown Christmas*. Listening to the record? Not so much. “I don’t really enjoy listening to it anymore,” he admits. “But playing it? That’s different. It’s jazz—you don’t play it the same way twice. T.T. (Mahony) takes different solos every night, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. It keeps me on my toes, and people love it. It’s a tradition for so many, and honestly, I love that.” Bützer, Mahony, bassist Francisco Lora, and vocalists Kelly Winn and Audrey Gamez will bring the Peanuts magic to Eddie Owens Presents at Red Clay in Duluth on Dec. 13. Since the original album is only 35 minutes, the group adds some surprises—like songs from the *Phil Spector Christmas Album*—and even clips from the TV special. “We never announce it; we just do it,” Bützer says. “No one’s ever left early, so I guess it works.” And the fans? They keep coming back. “We’ve got ‘Snoopy Groupies,’” Bützer laughs. “One woman came every year, moved away, and now flies back for the show. It’s wild.” For tickets, visit eddieowenspresents.com. STORY 5: Primerica collects nearly 82,000 food items for Can-A-Thon Christmas is about giving, right? Helping those in need? Primerica hosted its annual canned food drive last week at its Duluth headquarters, collecting a jaw-dropping 81,846 cans for the Salvation Army’s Can-A-Thon. But this year, they ditched the Santa hats for bell-bottoms and tie-dye. The theme? “Can You Dig It.” Employees went all-in on the 60s and 70s vibe—think hippie costumes, peace signs, and even a nod to the Mystery Machine from *Scooby-Doo*. Groovy, right? We’ll be right back. Break 3: Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink STORY 6: Families of crime victims remember loved ones at annual vigil As the names of Gwinnett County crime victims appeared on the screen at last weeks Crime Victims Candlelight Vigil, Deborah Free leaned into Renee Haygood’s shoulder, her tears unstoppable. Deborah’s daughter, Rachel, was killed in a domestic violence murder-suicide just two months ago. This will be the family’s first Christmas without her. Held at 12Stone Church in Duluth, the vigil—organized by the Gwinnett DA’s Office—offered grieving families a space to honor their loved ones. Three Christmas trees stood adorned with ornaments for victims, while a bell rang for each name read aloud. For Venetia and Jeffrey Coleman, who lost their son Bradley to a carjacking three years ago, the vigil was a chance to share hope. For the Free family, it was their first vigil—but not their last. “We’ll be back every year,” said Rachel’s sister, Jenn. “Her story doesn’t end here.” STORY 7: Grayson LB Tyler Atkinson Named Gatorade Georgia Football Player of the Year Gwinnett County’s got another star in the books—Grayson senior linebacker Tyler Atkinson just snagged the Gatorade Georgia Football Player of the Year award for 2025-26. That makes him the fifth-ever winner from Gwinnett, and the first since Mill Creek’s Caleb Downs in 2022. Atkinson’s season? Unreal. The 6’3”, 221-pound Texas Longhorns commit racked up 96 tackles, 26 for loss, nine sacks, and 22 QB hurries, leading Grayson to the state quarterfinals. Oh, and he’s a five-star recruit ranked No. 14 nationally for 2026. Off the field? He’s hosting youth football clinics, mentoring at church, and rocking a 3.48 GPA. Atkinson’s also in the running for Gatorade’s National Player of the Year. Big things ahead. We’ll have closing comments after this Break 4: GCPS Hiring Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Rutile is a form of Titanium ore with Iron deposits and is used in pottery to create brown, orange and yellow colours in pottery glazes. Rutile is also used to create beautiful speckled effects in glazes. However, there are some issues with the global Rutile mining industry, such as high energy consumption and the displacement of people from land, in order to mine Rutile. If you didn't want to use Rutile in your pottery, there are alternatives to using Rutile in glazes! Plant ashes (particularly ash from fallen leaves), for example, often create rutile-looking pottery glazes. Here are 4 of my favourite eco-conscious Rutile-like pottery glaze recipes. I adore ladies' lunches. The energy, chit-chat, and camaraderie are totally gleeful. So much fun to be with an interesting group of women who like to share their insights about entertaining at home. I didn't know who was coming -a friend asked me to host her friends who were on a visit to Charleston. She gave me some guidance on the menu (three courses, preferably fish and no lactose) and the rest up to me. The conversation was about Susan Spungen's book What's a Hostess to Do? and all the anecdotes and disasters that can happen at home with guests. How do you handle gate crashers? What do you do when someone is overserved? How do you deal with last-minute invitations? How do you pass all these traditions and knowledge to the next generation? Which rules can be broken? It was interesting and enlightening to know that everyone who entertains has the same issues! The table is set with greenery; there is so much color that I thought all green would be calming and charming. I added a combination of my white and green Portuguese ceramics from Bordallo Pinheiro and a tablecloth from D'ascoli. The red and white napkins are from Zara Home, which I have monogrammed with a deep brown thread. THE MENUTrout Caviar with Potato Chips & Sour CreamAsparagus GazpachoShrimp with Garlic & LemonChickpeas with PestoRoasted Vegetable Tumbet Roasted Plums & Peaches with Honey Everybody wanted the recipes that I am so thrilled to share here. Recipes: Asparagus Gazpacho Serves 6 I have made it with and without the hard-boiled egg with excellent results. The egg makes it thicker and creamier, more like the texture of vichyssoise. Without the egg, it is closer to a regular tomato gazpacho. I have also added canned artichokes to this gazpacho; it is delicious with and without them. (The ice cubes help with the amalgamation of the olive oil)* 1 lb jarred with asparagus (with their liquid)* 2-inch piece of cucumber, peeled* 1 hard-boiled egg * 1 clove of garlic* 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar* 4 tablespoons olive oil* Handful of ice cubes* 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper or more to tastePlace all the ingredients in a blender and pure until very smooth. Transfer to a container and chill until ready to serve.Roasted Vegetable TumbetServes 8 as a side dish.A mixture between ratatouille and pisto, Mallorcan Tumbet is made with summer vegetables: eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini. The addition of potatoes elevates the dish to main course status; serving it with fried or hard-boiled eggs makes it part of a classic summer dinner. In Mallorca, it is made by frying the vegetables separately, and then, once layered in an earthenware cazuela, they are baked until the sauce bubbles and all the vegetables are soft and cooked through.I am changing it by baking the vegetables (except the potatoes) to make the dish less caloric (and less laborious). The flavor, texture, and color remain the same.* 1/2 cup olive oil* 1 lb Yukon gold potatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds* 2 medium eggplants sliced into 1/4-inch rounds* 2 medium zucchini, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds* 2 red peppers, sliced into long strips* 2 green peppers, sliced into long strips* 1 lb ripe red tomatoes* 6 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped* A bunch of fresh basil, sliced into sliversPreheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a frying pan with 1/4 cup of olive oil over medium heat, fry the potato slices until soft and golden—season with salt and set aside. On paper-lined oven trays, arrange the eggplant, zucchini, and pepper slices in one layer. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes or until just soft. Set aside. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees.Using a large grater, grate the tomatoes to make a fresh sauce. Add the garlic and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.Assemble the Tumbet:In an oven-to-table round or rectangular tray, arrange the potatoes in one layer. Spoon a few tablespoons of the tomato-garlic mixture on top. Add the eggplant, a few more tablespoons of tomato, the peppers, more tomato mixture, and the zucchini. Finish with the rest of the tomato and garlic mixture.Bake in the oven until cooked through and the edges bubble, about 20-25 minutes.Serve hot or at room temperature, garnished with slivers of basil. One last thing: I need to share one anecdote: I roasted the peaches and plums with honey, something I have done a million times. However, I didn't quite look at the jar I used. It was Spicy Peach Honey from Red Clay. Needless to say, the dessert was spicy rather than sweet. When everyone commented on the cayenne flavor of the peaches….. Oh well!” Just another tip…. “Read the labels!” And just so you know, I pretended that it was intentional.- God forbid I would admit such an error! But I must say it was delicious! Hilarity ensued. And with this, I leave you.Sincerely,The Serial Hostess Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.
Sid talks to a couple of guys from Alabama who are founding members of one of the hottest young bands in the country—the Red Clay Strays. Brandon Coleman, the charismatic lead singer, spent his youth running around with siblings and cousins on a family compound outside of Turnerville, just north of Mobile. Meanwhile, Drew Nix, who plays guitar and writes a lot of the songs, grew up further north, in Birmingham. The two met through a mutual friend and eventually formed a country rock group that's made quite a name for itself, especially after their 2022 single, “Wondering Why.” Now the band is out with a new album called Made By These Moments, and they also have a song on the soundtrack for Twisters, one of the biggest movies of the past summer. Sid talks to the old friends and bandmates about their songwriting process, Brandon's recent Alabama wedding, plus the role of faith in their lives and their music. In 2016, they officially formed as the Strays, adding a couple players to round out the five-person outfit. After a few years gigging around the state and some festival slots, the band hit it big in 2023 when their song “Wondering Why” went viral on TikTok. It climbed up the Billboard charts and landed the band a deal with RCA Records. That led to their Dave Cobb-produced second studio LP, Made by These Moments, which was released on July 26.In September, the band made their debut at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on tour behind the record, and guitarists Drew Nix and Zach Rishel brought a beautiful stable of American-made 6-strings for the occasion. Geoff Tice! Comedian! Podcaster! Actor! Artist! Delight! Geoff has a new standup comedy album out called Jokes with a G, and here is some information about it straight from the Geoff's mouth: “It's a lighthearted and silly look at the world through the eyes of someone who doesn't take themselves – or anything really – too seriously.” He said. Jokes with a G is a collection of self-deprecating stories about being a new parent, second weddings, and his dad's drunk late-night calls. The album was recorded at The Comedy Fort in Fort Collins (a wondeful club, I'll add from my own [Myq Kaplan's] mouth)! And here's some more information about Geoff: Geoff Tice is a Denver-based comedian, writer, podcaster, actor, and artist. Geoff got into comedy while working full-time in graphic design 12 years ago. He went to an open mic and bombed but he never looked back. He has since become a staple of the Denver scene. He is a regular at the world-famous Comedy Works and has toured his energetic stand-up comedy across the country. Geoff hosted Comedy Central's South Park 25th Anniversary Tailgate two-day event at Red Rocks and performed at SF Sketchfest, High Plains Comedy Festival, Red Clay and Limestone, and other festivals. Geoff has also contributed to The Nosebleed's on UFC Fight Pass and appeared on Adult Swim. We have a wonderful chat and YOU can have a wonderful listen!
