Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)

I adore ladies' lunches. The energy, chit-chat, and camaraderie are totally gleeful. So much fun to be with an interesting group of women who like to share their insights about entertaining at home. I didn't know who was coming -a friend asked me to host her friends who were on a visit to Charleston. She gave me some guidance on the menu (three courses, preferably fish and no lactose) and the rest up to me. The conversation was about Susan Spungen's book What's a Hostess to Do? and all the anecdotes and disasters that can happen at home with guests. How do you handle gate crashers? What do you do when someone is overserved? How do you deal with last-minute invitations? How do you pass all these traditions and knowledge to the next generation? Which rules can be broken? It was interesting and enlightening to know that everyone who entertains has the same issues! The table is set with greenery; there is so much color that I thought all green would be calming and charming. I added a combination of my white and green Portuguese ceramics from Bordallo Pinheiro and a tablecloth from D'ascoli. The red and white napkins are from Zara Home, which I have monogrammed with a deep brown thread. THE MENUTrout Caviar with Potato Chips & Sour CreamAsparagus GazpachoShrimp with Garlic & LemonChickpeas with PestoRoasted Vegetable Tumbet Roasted Plums & Peaches with Honey Everybody wanted the recipes that I am so thrilled to share here. Recipes: Asparagus Gazpacho Serves 6 I have made it with and without the hard-boiled egg with excellent results. The egg makes it thicker and creamier, more like the texture of vichyssoise. Without the egg, it is closer to a regular tomato gazpacho. I have also added canned artichokes to this gazpacho; it is delicious with and without them. (The ice cubes help with the amalgamation of the olive oil)* 1 lb jarred with asparagus (with their liquid)* 2-inch piece of cucumber, peeled* 1 hard-boiled egg * 1 clove of garlic* 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar* 4 tablespoons olive oil* Handful of ice cubes* 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper or more to tastePlace all the ingredients in a blender and pure until very smooth. Transfer to a container and chill until ready to serve.Roasted Vegetable TumbetServes 8 as a side dish.A mixture between ratatouille and pisto, Mallorcan Tumbet is made with summer vegetables: eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini. The addition of potatoes elevates the dish to main course status; serving it with fried or hard-boiled eggs makes it part of a classic summer dinner. In Mallorca, it is made by frying the vegetables separately, and then, once layered in an earthenware cazuela, they are baked until the sauce bubbles and all the vegetables are soft and cooked through.I am changing it by baking the vegetables (except the potatoes) to make the dish less caloric (and less laborious). The flavor, texture, and color remain the same.* 1/2 cup olive oil* 1 lb Yukon gold potatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds* 2 medium eggplants sliced into 1/4-inch rounds* 2 medium zucchini, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds* 2 red peppers, sliced into long strips* 2 green peppers, sliced into long strips* 1 lb ripe red tomatoes* 6 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped* A bunch of fresh basil, sliced into sliversPreheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a frying pan with 1/4 cup of olive oil over medium heat, fry the potato slices until soft and golden—season with salt and set aside. On paper-lined oven trays, arrange the eggplant, zucchini, and pepper slices in one layer. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes or until just soft. Set aside. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees.Using a large grater, grate the tomatoes to make a fresh sauce. Add the garlic and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.Assemble the Tumbet:In an oven-to-table round or rectangular tray, arrange the potatoes in one layer. Spoon a few tablespoons of the tomato-garlic mixture on top. Add the eggplant, a few more tablespoons of tomato, the peppers, more tomato mixture, and the zucchini. Finish with the rest of the tomato and garlic mixture.Bake in the oven until cooked through and the edges bubble, about 20-25 minutes.Serve hot or at room temperature, garnished with slivers of basil. One last thing: I need to share one anecdote: I roasted the peaches and plums with honey, something I have done a million times. However, I didn't quite look at the jar I used. It was Spicy Peach Honey from Red Clay. Needless to say, the dessert was spicy rather than sweet. When everyone commented on the cayenne flavor of the peaches….. Oh well!” Just another tip…. “Read the labels!” And just so you know, I pretended that it was intentional.- God forbid I would admit such an error! But I must say it was delicious! Hilarity ensued. And with this, I leave you.Sincerely,The Serial Hostess Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.

Sid talks to a couple of guys from Alabama who are founding members of one of the hottest young bands in the country—the Red Clay Strays. Brandon Coleman, the charismatic lead singer, spent his youth running around with siblings and cousins on a family compound outside of Turnerville, just north of Mobile. Meanwhile, Drew Nix, who plays guitar and writes a lot of the songs, grew up further north, in Birmingham. The two met through a mutual friend and eventually formed a country rock group that's made quite a name for itself, especially after their 2022 single, “Wondering Why.” Now the band is out with a new album called Made By These Moments, and they also have a song on the soundtrack for Twisters, one of the biggest movies of the past summer. Sid talks to the old friends and bandmates about their songwriting process, Brandon's recent Alabama wedding, plus the role of faith in their lives and their music. In 2016, they officially formed as the Strays, adding a couple players to round out the five-person outfit. After a few years gigging around the state and some festival slots, the band hit it big in 2023 when their song “Wondering Why” went viral on TikTok. It climbed up the Billboard charts and landed the band a deal with RCA Records. That led to their Dave Cobb-produced second studio LP, Made by These Moments, which was released on July 26.In September, the band made their debut at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on tour behind the record, and guitarists Drew Nix and Zach Rishel brought a beautiful stable of American-made 6-strings for the occasion. They gave PG's John Bohlinger a tour of the goods.Shop The Red Clay Strays Gear:Gibson ES-339 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/dOKMK2Gibson Les Paul Classic - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/yqgXgGFender Twin Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/DK1nGjPedaltrain Metro 24 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/YRDMDrErnie Ball VP JR - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/da9AdQPeterson Strobostomp - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjJHS Morning Glory - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/7aevm5Xotic EP BoosterStrymon El Capistan - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/0ZLNRPStrymon Flint - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/QyAKk9Fender Super Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/ZQD0bqTC Electronic Polytune - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/k0oEQVMXR Custom Badass Modified OD - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LKaMP0TC Electronic Hall of Fame - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/MmMANnKeeley Dark Side - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/55avb1Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/the-red-clay-straysSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Molly Tuttle & D'Adarrio0:15 - John Bohlinger Intro0:38 - Drew Nix's Guitars6:47 - Drew Nix's Fender Twin Reverb7:57 - Drew Nix's Pedalboard13:56 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario14:27 - Zachary Rishel's Guitars18:08 - Zachary Rishel's 1968 Fender Super Reverb19:10 - Zachary Rishel's Pedalboard24:04 - D'Addario Strings[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024#guitar #rigrundown #guitarist #guitarplayer #guitargear #redclaystrays #music #countrymusic

Geoff Tice! Comedian! Podcaster! Actor! Artist! Delight! Geoff has a new standup comedy album out called Jokes with a G, and here is some information about it straight from the Geoff's mouth: “It's a lighthearted and silly look at the world through the eyes of someone who doesn't take themselves – or anything really – too seriously.” He said. Jokes with a G is a collection of self-deprecating stories about being a new parent, second weddings, and his dad's drunk late-night calls. The album was recorded at The Comedy Fort in Fort Collins (a wondeful club, I'll add from my own [Myq Kaplan's] mouth)! And here's some more information about Geoff: Geoff Tice is a Denver-based comedian, writer, podcaster, actor, and artist. Geoff got into comedy while working full-time in graphic design 12 years ago. He went to an open mic and bombed but he never looked back. He has since become a staple of the Denver scene. He is a regular at the world-famous Comedy Works and has toured his energetic stand-up comedy across the country. Geoff hosted Comedy Central's South Park 25th Anniversary Tailgate two-day event at Red Rocks and performed at SF Sketchfest, High Plains Comedy Festival, Red Clay and Limestone, and other festivals. Geoff has also contributed to The Nosebleed's on UFC Fight Pass and appeared on Adult Swim. We have a wonderful chat and YOU can have a wonderful listen! The Untold Story of John Ridge: A Real Cherokee Hero with Author Leslie K Simmons

Online For Authors Podcast

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leslie K Simmons, author of the book Red Clay, Running Waters.  Leslie K. Simmons writes about extraordinary people at the center of crucial turning points in American history. She is particularly fascinated by outliers and the lesser known (but no less incredible) stories that slip through history's cracks. After decades of research, she followed a path marked by serendipities to the true story of John and Sarah Ridge and her debut novel, Red Clay, Running Waters. In my book review, I stated Red Clay, Running Waters is a masterful account of John Ridge, a Cherokee statesman and his wife, Sarah Northrop. Simmons' research is phenomenal and gives readers a glimpse into what it was like as Georgia tried to force the Cherokee from its borders. Quite honestly, I had trouble reading and could only take the novel in small doses. Not because of the writing - which was flawless - but because of what I learned about how my government treated the Cherokee - lying, slandering, stealing, and killing. In addition to the heartless treatment of a great People, the book also looks at love. The relationship between Sarah and John is beautiful, though in no way perfect. Despite having continual trials, this couple found a way to keep moving forward. It certainly gave me hope. This is not a book for the faint of heart, but one that should be on everyone's TBR list. Episode #154: John Dokes

Improv Exchange Podcast

With inspiration from his stylistic ancestors Nat King Cole and Joe Williams, John Dokes brings new life to the deep-souled world of baritone jazz vocals on his elegant new album, Our Day on his Swing Theory Entertainment imprint. In delivering a distinctive post-pandemic outing of classic songs embodied with hopeful passion, Dokes—also promises that his new endeavor is “an album that will make you move.” Our Day features songs associated with Cole (such as the smooth low-toned “Almost Like Being in Love,” the delightful Rodgers and Hart gem, “This Can't Be Love,” the Latin-vibed “L.O.V.E.” that elicits dancing), two vocalese numbers (Jon Hendricks' take on one-time Jazz Messenger composer Bobby Timmons' “Moanin',” Mark Murphy's swinging run through Freddie Hubbard's “Red Clay”), the full-energy pop vibe on Billy Ocean's hit “Suddenly,” the calming Michel Legrand tune “I Will Wait for You” made famous from the Frank Sinatra songbook. “I grew up dancing hip-hop, I made a transition to something that I could do for a longer time in my life,” says Dokes. “I switched to Lindy Hop also known as swing dancing. I came to singing later in my life, but I gravitated to the music I was most passionate about—the eras of the ‘40s, ‘50s, early ‘60s. I started picking songs that really moved me. Dokes' last two albums were quintet affairs. For Our Day, he convened a nonet that includes members of the New York-based George Gee Swing Orchestra where he launched his career as a vocalist. (He documented that with his debut album, John Dokes Sings, George Gee Swings.) Key to the album's success is the arranging of Gee's musical director trombonist David Gibson. “Dave is a great arranger,” Dokes says. “He provides layers for the nonet where everyone has a chance to shine on solos as he fills up the space with his lines.” Now, with his fourth album, Dokes has fully arrived. There's not a dull moment on Our Day. He opens with “Our Day Will Come.” “It's a love song,” Dokes says. but it's also an opening from the past. Now is our time. Now is our day. It's really a song about us as a band coming back together.” Originally, Dokes was in the midst of fashioning a trilogy of quintet recordings (2017's Forever Reasons and 2019's True Love on Ian Hendrickson-Smith's Rondette Jazz label). While the third album is still in the works, a couple of events intervened. “I got derailed,” says Dokes. “First, my drummer Lawrence Leathers died after True Love came out. I moved to Chicago with my wife and two children. Then there was the pandemic that changed how I was looking at the future. I had to restart my brain. I decided to work on some of my material that had never been recorded. I contacted George Gee and he was working on his nonet's Christmas album in May 2023, so we combined that with David arranging my album. It was a back-to-back operation of small big bands.” The nonet comprises saxophonists Anthony Nelson Jr. and Michael Hashim, multi-reeds player Patience Higgins, trumpeters Freddie Hendrix and Andy Gravish, Gibson on trombone. pianist Steve Einerson, bassist Malik McLaurine and drummer Chris Latona. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas who grew up living in Oakland, California, Dokes never dreamed of becoming a professional singer even though he was fascinated by black-and-white reruns of Nat Coles' short-lived 15-minute network television show that ran on NBC in 1956. “I watched them nonstop before I ever thought about singing,“ Dokes says. “But there was his elegance, his smoothness, his ease. That resonated with me. And it informed how I approach my singing today. I don't dive into a lot of vocal acrobatics - but like some of my favorite acrobatic and non-acrobatic singers I like to lean in and tell the story to connect with my audience.” His father was steeped in music while Dokes was growing up. He played Nat King Cole albums in the house, and he was in an r&b band in the Bay Area in the ‘70s that often opened for soul/r&b stars of the day like The Whispers and The Stylistics. He moved to New York and became a regular at swing dance shows including dates by the George Gee Swing Orchestra. One of his dance partners was the legendary Lindy Hopper, cabaret star, alto sax player Dawn Hampton, the cousin of jazz hero Lionel Hampton and sister of legendary trombonist and composer Slide Hampton. She told him that she really liked his voice when he was dancing. “If Dawn likes my voice, I'm going to surprise her one night and sing a couple of songs with George's band. George only knew me as a dancer. He saw my potential and asked me to join the band. That built my confidence and gave me the path to get better.”

GEORGIA RADIO - Grammy winner John McEuen will released his new album, TheNewsman, on March 22nd viaCompass Records. And he joined us to talk about it, plus his incredible music career to date.In an unprecedented move for McEuen, the album is 11 spoken word tracks, all mini movies with his unique style ofmusic behind each one. From the opening title track, which is a true storyabout a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the youngmusician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by JulesVerne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased youngwife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire andperhaps bring a tear to your eye.The different tracks on the album rage from “Killed at theFord,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as heand friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford. Although no trouble is expected, a shot isfired from the woods and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellowdoesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's familyat home.“The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poemswritten by Robert Service, was published in 1907. It is told from theperspective of the man who cremates the prospector who froze to death in theYukon while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill”was published in 1925. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released it on their album“Stars & Striped Forever” in 1974.“Fly Trouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and oneof “talking blues” numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the pastyears.“Old Rivers” was written by Cliff Crofford andreleased by Walter Brennan in 1963, while Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den”while he was in Vietnam in 1968. More recent writings are “Pineapple John” byJohn Carter Cash, Hans Olson's “I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” andThaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.”“I have been around the world playing music and collectingstories for… a long time,” McEuen acknowledges. “As a teenager, well beforeNitty Gritty Dirt Band, I loved Meredith Wilson's The Music Man.Before I started playing I must have recited “Ya Got Trouble”2,000times! Later, when performing became part of the life I picked, every now andthen I would do one of these ‘stories' (often a Hank Williams talking blues) onstage, always happy about how well they went over.“I did The Mountain Whippoorwill for many years with theearly Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Then, another story would come along, be learned, and ‘filed away' for a future date. ‘The stories' soon tired of waiting to ‘getdone'.“So, I did them.”McEuen credits work he has done on film scores as a majorinfluence on this album. He especially credits Tommy Lee Jones, who along with SissySpacek starred in “Good Ole Boys,” for which he did the soundtrack.“At this point of my career, film score work (14 cool scores)gave me the experience of putting background music with words and picture, without getting ‘in the way' with music,” McEuen says. “I learned from TommyLee Jones, while I was doing a score for him, that when someone says ‘Hey,that's a great score going on there,' the music person has failed to supportthe picture. You can't let the music dominate, it has to support what'shappening.' So it sometimes is with spoken word. This album is a soundtrack forfilms not yet made.”McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of theWorld made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having toread the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', thetitle cut, was about that type of fellow in a way, and hisstory had tobe told.“I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this albumcomes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it hasrun its course, it's time for The Newsman!“I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, andthrowing a few of these stories in along the way.”McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio.“It is my suggestion that programmers add one of these cuts in between othermusic they are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are eachdifferent. Listening to The Newsman from top to bottom is a lot to askof anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.”QUICK LINK: https://store.compassrecords.com/products/the-newsman-a-man-of-recordAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

From the opening title track, a true story about a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the young musician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by Julies Verne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased young wife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire and perhaps bring a tear to your eye. The different tracks on the album range from “Killed at the Ford,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as he and friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford,  not expecting trouble. A shot is fired from the woods, and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow doesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's family at home. “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poems written by Robert Service, was published in 1907, told from the perspective of the man who cremates the prospector who died in the Yukon, while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill” (published in 1925). “FlyTrouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and one of “talking blues”numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the past years.“OldRivers” was released by Walter Brennann1963,  Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den” while he was in Vietnam in 1968.More recent writings are “Pineapple John” by John Carter Cash, Hans Olson's“I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” and Thaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.” This album is a soundtrack for films not yet made.” McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of the World made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having to read the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', the title cut, was about that type of fellow, in a way, and his story had to be told.I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this album comes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it has run its course, it's time for The Newsman. I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50 years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, and throwing a few of these stories in along the way.” McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio. “It is my suggestion to add one of these cuts in between other music you are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are each different. Listening to from top to bottom is a lot to ask of anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.” #nittygrittydirtband #spokenword #newalbum #newmusic #stevemartin #music #poetry #poems #tommyleejones #sissyspacek

Has “organic” lost its sheen? Based on Nielsen IQ data presented by Whipstitch Capital's Nick McCoy, it would appear so. A veteran food and beverage investment banker, McCoy spoke at a recent event in Vail, Colorado hosted by private equity firm Manna Tree. As part of a presentation on deal flow and trends in the natural products industry, he revealed a shift of the most important product attributes for consumers of natural brands, and how Gen Z and Alpha's current spending patterns can inform brands about where to invest their resources. The Manna Tree event also featured fireside chats with General Mills M&A director Andrew Petz and Holly Adrien, who leads natural and organic strategy for Kroger and is the retailer's innovation manager, each of whom shared insights about their respective roles amid an evolving landscape for natural products. Ray attended the event and shared takeaways in this episode, which also includes the hosts' assessment of Nutrabolt's investment in supplement brand Bloom Nutrition and the acquisition of plant-based creamer brand nutpods. The hosts also riffed on a handful of new products, including Heath-Ade's new soda brand Sunsip. Show notes: 0:35: When In Vail, Vest Up. Time To Invest In Sustainable Packaging? A Good Match. Jacqui's Peas. – The hosts commented on Ray's unusual outfit and lack of ski plans before he gave a summary of business presentations from Manna Tree's Leadership Summit, held earlier in the week. Amid the synopsis, they chatted about why a high-profile cereal company was struggling to find an acquirer, best practices for connecting with retailer buyers and a few expectations for Expo West. Ray shared his take on Health-Ade's latest attempt at soda, while John and Mike spiced things up with new hot sauces and chili crisps and Jacqui shared her passion for peas. Brands in this episode: Gotham Greens, Heath-Ade, The New Primal, Good Culture, Verde Farms, C4, Bloom Nutrition, nutpods, Sunsip, Red Clay, Truff, Muci, Bhuja, Magic Spoon

Episode 179: Red Clay WarfareFor close to six decades, the American Church has presented an exterior of polish. It has looked really inviting to step into the American Brand of God's Kingdom. Wealth, health, triumphalism, prosperity, power, luxury and beauty…we have been told that these things are what make up the Kingdom. The negative impact of this lopsided messaging is clearly seen today. While God is committed to blessing and prospering each Christian as He wisely chooses, there are some other things PROMISED to each Christian that few wish to discuss. Today's podcast takes us out of the place of polish and into the red-clay trenches of warfare.

It's 1885, in Richmond, Virginia. The body of a young, pregnant woman is found floating in the city's old reservoir. At first, the coroner thinks she died by suicide. That is, until he spots bruises on her face and a tear in her dress. He hands the case over to Charles H. Epps, captain of the Richmond Police Force, who begins investigating her murder. With no way of identifying her, and no witnesses, it starts to feel like one of those cases that will remain unsolved. And then, at the reservoir, he finds a clue among the weeds. But, will it be enough to help him track down the suspected murderer? In early February of 2022, law enforcement officials in Boone, North Carolina made national headlines when they announced that a 50-year-old unsolved triple homicide case had been closed - with the help of none other than former “Dixie Mafia” member Billy Wayne Davis. The 1972 murders of Bryce, Virginia and 18-year-old Bobby Durham was one of the most notorious cases in the state's history, one surrounded by numerous theories and conspiracies. Davis' admission that he was present on the night of the murders is only part of the story of what really happened.  IN THE RED CLAY – DURHAM is a brand new 6-episode second season of the award-winning series detailing the case of the Durham family murders from 1972 to present day and features interviews with enforcement officials, investigators, and family members of the victims and the killers.
