Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Barcelona has not had historical success against Inter or against any Italian clubs for that matter, but they've got to find a way to win today at the San Siro to advance to the Champions League final. After the 3-3 draw last week in Spain, Barca could get Robert Lewandowski back on the bench while Inter might see Benjamin Pavard and Lautaro Martinez back in their group.  With only 5 wins all-time in 24 matches in Italy in European competition, and only 1 win in 6 games against Inter in Milan, the odds are stacked against Barcelona today. Simone Inzaghi said he will add to those stacked odds by doubling on Lamine Yamal. Dani Olmo said that Yamal has handled that well and it will lead to Barcelona having a free man so stay tuned.  Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Round of 32 starts tonight with 16 MLS teams entering the tournament. Yes, we want all of them in the tournament again and we want the roster rules to be expanded to make that a comfortable process. Please get it done for next year. Interesting matchups tonight include DC hosting Charleston in the Coffee Pot Cup (DC players smashed coffee pots in the locker room in Charleston when they were knocked out of the tournament in 1999), Chattanooga Red Wolves travel to Nashville, while Charlotte travels to Cary to face North Carolina FC. Reportedly, an agreement for Carlo Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid has been reached. Brazil says that they want to name their new coach by next week at the latest, while Madrid wants to see if they can get Xabi Alonso in place before the Club World Cup. You know, your usual telenovela continues in Spain. Also, Madrid wants to get Trent Alexander-Arnold in place before the Club World Cup and might be willing to pay Liverpool to get his transfer done ahead of the tournament rather than when his contract ends in June.  Still waiting on news as of press time about the CAS ruling on Club Leon and the Club World Cup spot, that should be announced today so we will know who will face Chelsea on June 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  Upset last night in the Georgia high school playoffs as previously unbeaten Brookwood were knocked out in the girls quarterfinals by Buford 2-1. Johnson of Gainesville had to go back to Calhoun to finish their Round of 16 boys match that was suspended Friday night due to weather, they lost their lead but came back to win 2-1. Now after a 3.5 hour trip back and forth from Gainesville, they have to play against tonight in the quarterfinals. We'll update everything from around the state tonight after the Dalton-St. Pius match.  Atlanta Soccer Tonight is live at 11pm on 92.9 The Game and the Audacy app. No Espresso tomorrow morning, we'll be back live on Thursday.

September is Attendance Awareness Month! Regular, on-time attendance is essential to students' education. Too many absences - excused or unexcused - can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. Did you know that missing just two days of school per month means a student loses 10% of their instruction for the school year? Learn more about the importance of attendance, download an attendance tracker, and see support strategies on our website. Of course, attendance does not take priority over your health! If you are ill, please follow the too sick for school guidelines and stay home until you are feeling better. Our featured student is Harvey P. from Brookwood! Each summer, Unitus Community Credit Union and the Hillsboro Hops team up to honor “Barley's Buddies.” Buddies are students in grades K-6 who show determination, perseverance, and grit. Buddies receive a one-of-a-kind day at a Hillsboro Hops game that includes a stadium tour, gift bag with jersey, team interaction, club seats for all family members as well as the staff member who nominated them, and more. Ten students were selected this summer, including Harvey. He attended the Hops game on Wednesday, July 17th, along with his family and teacher, Michele Powers. “Harvey threw out the first pitch of the game - he was so nervous,” Powers explains. “I had the privilege of helping him and his family learn the rules of baseball and watching their eyes fill with joy over the first crack of the bat!” Many thanks to Unitus, the Hillsboro Hops, and Ms. Powers for providing this amazing experience; and way to go, Harvey! You make us Proud to be HSD! The first day of school for students in grades 1-6, 7, and 9 is Wednesday, September 4th. Students in grades K, 8, and 10-12 will join them on Thursday, September 5th. Today is Wednesday, July 10th and Happy heavenly Birthday to tennis player Arthur Ashe. ***07.10.24 –BIRTHDAY – ARTHUR ASHE***   I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Gwinnett preparing to open Eastern Regional Greenway Trail Brookwood student who battled childhood cancer now running strong A Duluth Man Drowned In South Carolina Last Week Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on cooking fish. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Gwinnett preparing to open Eastern Regional Greenway Trail Residents of eastern Gwinnett County are anticipating the opening of the Eastern Regional Greenway Trail, part of a larger infrastructure project. Scheduled for a July 22 ceremony, the initial 5.25-mile segment will stretch from the Harbins Road trailhead under State Route 316. The remainder of the trail, still under construction, will open later this summer. Designed to enhance the Rowen "knowledge community" development, the trail will feature boardwalks, bridges, and a paved path, with amenities like a pavilion, play area, and parking. Costing $19 million, the project is a collaboration between Gwinnett County's Community Services and Water Resources departments, funded by special purpose local option sales tax revenue. STORY 2: Brookwood student who battles childhood cancer now running strong Jackson Fenchak, a rising junior at Brookwood High School, achieved a significant milestone by winning his age group at the Lauren's Run 5K, completing the race in 23 minutes and 45 seconds. This victory holds special meaning as Jackson battled Stage IV neuroblastoma as an infant and later overcame congenital vertical talus. Supported by CURE Childhood Cancer throughout his journey, Jackson's family now gives back by raising funds and participating in events. Despite challenges, including multiple surgeries, Jackson excels in cross country, track, and wrestling. He approaches each day with gratitude, seeing every opportunity to compete as a gift. STORY 3: A Duluth Man Drowned in South Carolina Last Week Last week, 61-year-old Duluth resident Kemal Alic tragically drowned in the Atlantic Ocean near Myrtle Beach, according to reports from South Carolina. The Horry County Coroner's Office determined Alic's death was due to drowning, with asphyxiation cited just before 1 p.m. on July 3. Alic, a Bosnian war veteran who had resettled in the U.S., leaves behind a wife and three children. A GoFundMe campaign started by his friend, Hardit Singh, aims to support Alic's family during this difficult time, highlighting Alic's dedication as a hard worker and his pursuit of opportunities in America. The campaign has raised $1,721 of its $10,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Snellville tag office closing temporarily for repairs The Snellville Tag Office in Gwinnett County will close temporarily from July 24 to July 29 due to repairs from a water main break. Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell announced residents can use other tag offices in Lawrenceville, North Gwinnett, Norcross, and Peachtree Corners during this period. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Tag renewal services are also available at 12 kiosks throughout the county, including one at Publix in Snellville, with fees applicable and card payments accepted. For assistance, residents can contact the Tax Commissioner's Office DMV Customer Service Line or email tag@gwinnettcounty.com. STORY 5: With Animal Welfare Center Reaching Capacity, Gwinnett Offering Free Adoptions   Gwinnett County's Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center faces critical capacity, prompting a special adoption initiative called "12 Strays of Christmas in July." Until July 20, the county is offering free adoptions along with holiday pet care packages while supplies last. The packages include vaccinations, microchips, and spaying/neutering services. Katrina Amaro, Director of Animal Welfare and Enforcement, emphasized the need to find homes for larger dogs, who are typically harder to place. Temporary fostering options are also available, providing food, vet care, and supplies at no cost. For more details on adoption and fostering, visit GwinnettAnimalWelfare.com or follow @GwinnettAnimalShelter on Facebook. The center is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  INGLES  4   And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath on cooking fish.   ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: INGLES 5 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Professor David Hemenway, the author of “Private Guns, Public Health” joins us to explain how we can reduce gun deaths if we treat the problem more like a public health issue, just like Ralph proved when dealing with the auto industry. Plus, Ralph weighs in on the repeal of the child tax credit, and Francesco DeSantis reports news items that tend to get ignored in the corporate media in our segment “In Case You Haven't Heard.”David Hemenway is an economist, Professor of Health Policy at Harvard University, and director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center and the Harvard Youth Violence Prevention Center. He is a former Nader's Raider, and he is the author of Private Guns, Public Health,  and While We Were Sleeping: Success Stories in Injury and Violence Prevention.Just by making it harder for criminals to get those guns, we have fewer criminals using those guns. That's a fundamental law of economics and of psychology— if you don't want people to do something, make it harder. If you want them to do it more, make it easier.David HemenwayThe key about public health is: what we're trying to do is prevent. Prevent. Prevent. Prevent. And too often, in the United States, what we try to do is blame. And often, blaming, all it does is say “Oh I don't have to do anything. It's somebody else's fault.”David Hemenway[Reinstituting the Child Tax Credit] is something so simple, it's something that helps so many families, it increases consumer demand because most of this money is spent on the necessities of life… and the Republicans are blocking it in Congress and not paying a political price. And that's the story of the Democratic Party— they don't make the Republicans, who are as cruel as any Republicans in history, pay a price.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. A Princeton University study, published at the end of August, traces the effects of unconditional cash transfers on homelessness. Focusing on Vancouver, Canada, researchers gave homeless people $7,500 Canadian. Conforming to the results of previous studies, the subjects used this money to get into housing – yet, what was remarkable about this study is it showed this program actually saved taxpayers money overall by relieving $8,277 per subject by removing them from the shelter system.2. From Axios: 15 Senators have penned a letter to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken urging him to stop the planned admission of Israel into the Visa Waiver program. This program allows a country's citizens to travel within the United States for 90 days without a visa. Built into this program is a provision demanding US citizens in a given country are treated equally – which is not the case for Palestinian Americans living in the West Bank. Israel claims that they are working to achieve compliance with this section of the law; however, this group of Senators argue that “There is no provision in law that provides that a visa waiver country can discriminate against certain groups of U.S. citizens for the first seven months of the program simply because a country claims they will treat all U.S. citizens equally for the last five months."3. California Democrat Ro Khanna is making his pitch that President Biden should campaign on reelection on an anti-corruption platform, per the Huffington Post. Khanna, who previously chaired the Bernie Sanders campaign in California, has authored a five-point plan, consisting of “banning candidates for federal office from receiving donations from lobbyists or political action committees of any kind, banning members of Congress from trading stocks, limiting Supreme Court appointees to 18-year terms, imposing 12-year term limits on members of Congress, and requiring federal judges and Supreme Court justices to adhere to a new and more robust code of ethics.” Beyond the hard policy though, is a political point – Khanna argues “What we cannot allow to happen is for a former president ― twice impeached and four times indicted ― to position himself as the outsider in the race.”4. On September 7th, General Motors submitted a proposal to the United Autoworkers in a near last ditch attempt to stave off a strike from the newly re-energized union. In response, UAW president Shawn Fain released the following statement, “After refusing to bargain in good faith for the past six weeks, only after having federal labor board charges filed against them, GM has come to the table with an insulting proposal that doesn't come close to an equitable agreement for America's autoworkers. GM either doesn't care or isn't listening when we say we need economic justice at GM by 11:59pm on September 14th. The clock is ticking. Stop wasting our members' time. Tick tock.”5. On September 10th, Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to the Chair of the Federal Election Commission urging her to crackdown on “telemarketing calls and online scams that prey on [Americans'] goodwill and civic engagement,” noting that a recent charity scam defrauded consumers of over $150 million dollars, while a recent “network of scam…(PACs) took in $140 million.” Many speculate that Senator Blumenthal was spurred to act on this issue following the release of a documentary series on telemarketing scams focusing on the Civic Development Group, which raised vast sums for charities, which only received between 10 and 15% of that money. The Civic Development Group has itself been shut down by the FTC.         6. Labor journalist Michael Sainato reports that last week, the NLRB ruled in favor of the United Mine Workers of America, blocking Warrior Met Coal's attempt to stage a decertification election at their Brookwood, Alabama facility. UMWA President Cecil E. Roberts is quoted saying the NLRB “based [its] decision on a ruling…that determined Warrior Met Coal...violated the law before the strike began, continue to violate the law today, and intend to keep violating it in the future.” The UMWA strike against Warrior Met is the longest coal strike in Alabama history.7. The Intercept reports Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican of Tennessee has introduced a new amendment to the NDAA which would bar the Pentagon from providing assistance to Pakistan amid the “ongoing crackdown by the military establishment and its civilian allies.” Pakistan has been experiencing political turmoil since the ouster of popular president Imran Khan on dubious legal grounds. Pakistan is a major recipient of US military assistance and the Biden administration has resisted attempts to reign in the ruling regime since Khan was deposed.8. A new piece in Insider covers the clash of conservative and liberal populist Senators JD Vance of Ohio and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. The two have been collaborating on rail safety legislation following the East Palestine derailment, and we have covered the degeneration of this legislation on the show before. Now, Vance is turning his attention to banning mask mandates, which Fetterman calls  “silly performance art” which is taking time and attention away from the stalled rail safety bill.9. Finally, a cover story in the Nation chronicles the “Confessions of a McKinsey Whistleblower.” The author was assigned to the McKinsey teams advising ICE and the Rikers Island prison, and he lays out how he tried and failed to resist the brutal and insidious nature of these institutions from inside the firm. The story is worth reading in its entirety to see behind the curtain of a firm which tries to wrap itself in platitudes like “Change the world. Improve lives.” Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Their IQ scores, added together, totaled just 81. Following prevailing eugenic beliefs of the times, Skeels and his colleague Marie Skodak assumed that the girls had inherited their parents' low intelligence and were therefore unfit for adoption. The girls were sent to an institution for the “feebleminded” to be cared for by “moron” women. To Skeels and Skodak's astonishment, under the women's care, the children's IQ scores became normal.
