(Genesis 47:1-12) Shepards, abominations, callbacks, and foreshadowing. This chapter has it all.
Most of us are familiar with the Christmas nativity story. Mary and Joseph crouched over a hay filled manger. Shepards, various farm animals, and three men on camel back looking on from the outside. We know these characters but do we really know what they symbolize? Pastor Tim would like to take this season to dive down deep into a few "Christmas Figures" from the Christmas Story.
Who were those shepherds in Luke 2? Why did the Angel and Heavenly Chorus herald the birth of Christ to those Shepherds outside Bethlehem? And what can we learn from this event? Luke 2:8-20 (CSB)The story of the shepherds highlights the gospel's appeal to everyone. The shepherds, an unlikely group viewed as outcasts, untrustworthy often labeled as criminals had no influence or power. Yet, this is the group God selected to reach out to in the fields in a spectacular way. We see them being obedient by immediately going to see the newborn King and spreading the good news which made them first missionaries of the gospel! God calls everyone regardless of affiliation, past or societal standing. The gospel is for everyone.

During Jesus’s birth it would be easy to guess that He is without power. But his ordinary presentation is NOT a display of His actual power. We look at these verses to see two things: Jesus' Ordinary Birth, and how it highlights His Extraordinary Proclamation. Ordinary Birth - Jesus’s birth happens where it happens because of a normal mundane circumstance: a census. Even getting there is a 3-4 day (for healthy people) travel for Bethlehem. But Mary is pregnant. But God is moving heaven and earth and government to get Mary and Joseph where they need to be for this prophecy to be fulfilled. And he was born in a manger - a stinking, cramped box for feeding animals. God is drawing our attention to the circumstances of his Birth, it’s ordinary and humble. Jesus didn’t come to earth born in a beautiful comfortable palace; instead, He was born in a manger. God is telling us that He was born for everyone. Ordinary and regular folk. Extraordinary proclamation - the angels visit the Shepards at night, and they show up shining bright! The ordinary men have the type of reaction that ordinary men do. They were filled with great fear. In this moment, they get to see the angels, and they recognize that they are in the presence of Godly power. Our smallness becomes very real to us, because of who we are in the presence of. So, we are afraid. But in every case, they say “Don’t be afraid.” This is because in order to save us, our savior has arrived. And how do they find Him? In an ordinary context. In a manger. In swaddling cloths. Not fine linen or palaces. When you receive this good news, what do you do? What did the Shepards do? They moved - they went to go see. To move closer to this child! They moved closer to Jesus. They come to see, singing praises to God. And when they leave, they go and tell others what they have seen!

In this study we will take a look at the miracles that Yahweh performed on the Egyptians, when Israel was held in bondage, during this period in Exodus. We will see that those miracles were against the Egyptian deities or gods that they worshippedThe story of Moses is not just the story of the freedom of a group of slaves from Egypt in the second millennium BCE. It is the blueprint of the Plan of Salvation of the world as seen from the structure laid down in the Bible Moses was the prototype of the Messiah. More importantly, the nation of Israel saw Moses as a prototype and the Bible record illustrates that point Let's continue our study in Exodus Chapter 3 Verses 18-22. I also read from The Legends of the Old Testament and Book of The Gods18 the Yahweh Elohim of the Hebrews = as distinct from the gods of the Egyptianand now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wilderness = the wilderness of Sinai and Arabia, and to Mount Horeb in it20 And I will stretch out my hand = “shâlach” “shaw-lakh'” “shin-lamed-chet” “Aleph-Tav”Shin =(two front teeth) sharp, press, eat twoLamed = lamed – (shepherd staff), teach, yoke, to bindChet = (tent wall) outside, divide halfAleph = (ox) strength, strong, power, leaderTav = (Cross) sign, covenant seal, mark and crossBy Elohim stretching forth His hand with that Shepards staff, we see the sharpness of His power, dividing the bondage of the Egyptians and His people Elohim is always in controlSmite = “nâkâh” “naw-kaw'” “nun-kaph-hey) (Aleph-Tav)Nun = (seed) continue, heir, sonKaph = (open palm) bend, open, allow, tamehey = (man with arms raised) behold, reveal, window, breathAleph = (ox) strength, strong, power, leaderTav = (Cross) sign, covenant seal, mark and crossThe Hebrew letter ‘nun' is a picture of a seed, whereas ‘kaph' is a picture of the palm of the hand. Combined these mean "seed in the palm". Seeds of certain plants were placed in the palm and rubbed with the thumb to a powdery spice. Therefore we have Elohim destroying the seed of Egypt21 People = “‛am” “am” “ayin-mem” “aleph-tav”Ayin = (eye) watch, know, shade (this letter is basically silent) Mem = (water) chaos, blood, mightyAleph = (ox) strength, strong, power, leaderTav = (Cross) sign, covenant seal, mark and crossThe letter ‘ayin' is a picture of the eye, the letter ‘mem' is a picture of the sea representing mass. Combined these mean "see a mass". A large group of people in one location. When you look at the several meaning of these Hebrew letters, what I find unique here is that Elohim uses chaos against the Egyptian gods, the Passover blood and the fact that He leads His people through the Nile River22 Every woman shall borrow = This is certainly not a very correct translation: the original word ‘shaal' signifies simply to ask, request, demand, require, inquire, etc.;Ye shall spoil the Egyptians = The verb ‘natsal' signifies, not only to spoil, snatch away, but also to get away, to escape, to deliver, to regain, or recover. Spoil signifies what is taken by violence; but this cannot be the meaning of the original word here, as the Israelites only asked, and the Egyptians without fear, terror, or constraint, freely gave “nun-tsade-lamed” “Aleph-tav”Nun = (seed) continue, heir, sonTsade = (trail) journey, chase, hunt, man on his sideLamed = lamed – (shepherd staff), teach, yoke, to bindAleph = (ox) strength, strong, power, leaderTav = (Cross) sign, covenant seal, mark and crossOnly by the power of Elohim, were the Israelites able to do thisHave any questions? Dennis and Judy Shepard's gay son Matthew Shepard was murdered in October 1998. The 21-year-old University of Wyoming student's death remains one of America's most high-profile cases of hate crime against an LGBTQI+ person. The grieving Shepards created a foundation in his name, and led the fight to pass the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Act, to help the federal government track and prosecute LGBTQI+ hate crimes. Dennis and Judy have been visiting New Zealand speaking at a range of events, including with NZ Police, to highlight LGBTQI+ security concerns and share their story.

This episode is part of a series called Replenish: Tasting God's Enough (Psalm 23) Matt is a husband, father, and friend. He's also a speaker, coach, pastor, leader, and teacher. He has been involved in leadership and pastoral ministry for three decades and trying to figure out what it means to be a human being for a bit longer. He is the Founder and Principal of THRIVE – a speaking, teaching, and coaching initiative that focuses on engaging men and women to be fully alive to the glory of God in every arena of their life, journey, and culture. Some of the seeds of the vision for THRIVE were planted years ago when Matt studied at L'Abri in Huémoz, Switzerland with Francis Schaeffer, who introduced him to the writings of the late Hans Rookmaaker, an art historian known for proclaiming, “Jesus didn't come to make us Christian; Jesus came to make us fully human.”

Welcome to Day 2116 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Becoming A Radical Disciple 3 – Maturity and Creation Care – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 08/15/2021 Becoming A Radical Disciple – Maturity and Creation Care My purpose in this series is to consider eight character traits of Christian discipleship that are often neglected and deserve to be taken seriously. In the past two weeks, we have explored Nonconformity and Christlikeness. Today our focus will be on Maturity and Creation Care. Maturity What would be your answer if I were to ask you to summarize the Christian scene in the world today? While it is somewhat difficult to know with certainty, I would sum it up in just three words, namely ‘growth without depth.' There is no doubt of the church's phenomenal growth in many parts of the world, including the western cultures. The statistics of church growth are tremendous. Unfortunately, the news media, even many Christian ministries, focus on the negative aspects. ‘Explosion' is not too dramatic a word to describe it. It is an exciting time to be alive as a citizen of God's kingdom. For example, the church in China and India has grown at least one hundredfold since the middle of the twentieth century. More Christian believers now worship God every Sunday in China than in all the churches of Western Europe. Many churches have been forced underground, but persecution has grown and strengthened God's kingdom throughout the ages. Bible.com and Biblegateway.com have experienced tremendous growth as more people are connected online. Never before have there been so many Biblical resources available today, especially on the internet, where many are either free or very inexpensive. For many years, the top category for podcasts worldwide has been Religion and Spirituality, with Christianity being the majority. A 2021 American Bible Society survey showed that 71% of Americans read the Bible regularly. To make a long story short, the kingdom of God is expanding rapidly, and when Christ returns a second time, it will be to establish His kingdom in a worldwide Eden. With all the negative news out today, this is the Good News that we can rally behind. While this is good news, we have to keep in perspective this is not an indication that many of these people desire to become radical disciples, for it is numeric growth without depth. Therefore, the third character trait of a radical disciple is Maturity. A lack of maturity is an issue in western culture and the church worldwide. Church leaders throughout the world indicate that this is an issue. There are superficial disciples everywhere; as we see, there is a massive problem with a lack of godliness and integrity. The church universal lacks a solid biblical or theological foundation of its own. This rapid growth results in an increasing number of immature disciples because few mature, knowledgeable Shepards are available to train the sheep. This fact is one of our calls to radical discipleship. The lack of radical discipleship is not new; the church's rapid growth fuels it. We can say this because the apostles whose letters we find in the New Testament rebuke their readers for their immaturity and urge them to grow up. Consider, for example, Paul's critique of the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn't talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this...

Once upon a time, Thor made a journey into jǫtunheimr without his magic hammer. Or at least, that's one version of the story. So along the way he had to make due with other weapons. But do these other weapons preserve a more ancient memory of the thunder god's arsenal? And by the way, has Mjǫllnir always been a hammer? Let's dig in together.
