Adam invites back guest Allan Vo (CRT Reefs), to dig deeper into his new adaptation of the reef feeding method known as ‘the concoction'. They discuss Alan's reasoning behind it and new adaptations he has applied to it, as well as deriving inspiration from a recent trip he made to Vietnam. They discuss tips for troubleshooting coral issues and developing your reefing intuition or ‘sixth sense'. From a young age, Allan was raised in a home with reef tanks around and has been learning and obsessing over corals and fish since he was a kid. Allan works hand and hand on tanks with his father, Hung Vo. Be sure to check out Alan's ongoing thread on Reef2Reef, as well as his feeding concoction video to keep up with his progress and methodology.CRT Reef Links:https://www.instagram.com/crt_reefs/https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/some-of-my-acro-collection.173621/https://youtu.be/zlwpWqekkjw?si=YFv8o9M_q2THyHiqhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKuLskvBVl0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq-jGBQy8EUhttps://youtu.be/LwpZc9S4rxI?si=2TMxY-fQXlrGX_rnProducts Discussed:https://www.korallen-zucht.dehttps://www.faunamarin.de/en/8143/https://www.faunamarincorals.de/en/VIB-X-Marine/14282-VHFrag Garage Links:https://www.patreon.com/BeyondTheReefPodcasthttps://fraggarage.ca/https://www.instagram.com/fraggarage/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLkiAJNqvoIRDRTFs34e6Twhttps://www.facebook.com/fraggarage Hosted on Acast. Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Sunny Harajly.Sunny has been reefing for 25+ years. His systems have always favored carbon dosing and the leveraging of bacteria for coral growth. He started experimenting with carbon dosing back in 2004 and around 2007 he helped it gain some traction in the hobby. He was also featured in CORAL Magazine at the time as well as many other online and physical publications due to his success with carbon dosing. The systems he has setup have been featured as TOTM on all of the big sites (ReefCentral, Reef2Reef, etc). For a time, he had a coral company up and running, Pro Corals, which released some classic corals such as the PC Rainbow. You may also recall seeing Sunny's very well-known rimless reef tank. Today Sunny chronicles his reef keeping journey via the website Reefsite.com.

Sent by Blake Dufrene https://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter118 Profiles: Dustin Haas: Has been in the aquarium hobby for almost 15 years now. Started out in freshwater with convict cichlids which quickly started breeding, which led to more and more tanks. He also kept African cichlids and many other tropical fish for about 2 years until he got hooked into the salty side of the hobby. Started with a 10g and a mantis shrimp that someone local was throwing away. Corals and fish were right behind and has been keeping only saltwater aquariums for about 10 years now. He currently has a 40g breeder, 32g biocube, 20g waterbox cube, and a 75g build in process. He loves LPS corals, high end mushrooms and zoas, eels, clownfish and anemones, and really everything this hobby has to offer. There is so much, there will always be something new. He really wants to thank my amazing wife for helping him take care of the animals, and putting up with all my spilled water over the years, she really loves the hobby too, which can be a blessing. Kevin DaCorte: Has kept freshwater aquariums throughout his childhood and has been reefing for about 4 years. His main display is a 40-gallon breeder mixed reef and keeps a variety of corals in the tank but recently has been getting into more zoas and euphyllia. He recently bought an Apex controller and being a front-end developer by trade, has loved playing around and trying out new ways to code things into it. His favorite show he goes to every year is his and our local frag swap Frag Farmers Market. He funds his tank passion as a Graphic Designer and Front-End Developer for a bev/alc. marketing company during the day. Main Topic: Whether just starting out, upgrading or working with a tight budget you can have a baller system without breaking the bank! Some industry leaders and reefers may look down on the budget reefer at least in jest (I think we have all looked for a more affordable option at least a few times..). We think that there is a ton of resourcefulness and brilliance that can be born of working within the confines of a tight budget. The key is not just getting stuff on the cheap but finding options that work well and last. To be continued.... Researchers at Australia's Southern Cross University are now preparing to put the latest into action, with millions of turbo-charged coral babies being readied to take root in the reef's most degraded areas. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy90 Peter- The relationship between bacteria and Corals has recently become a hot topic on Reef2Reef as a result of a research paper recently published in the Nature journal. The study estimates that about 1/3 of all corals worldwide are infected with this newly discovered bacterium which researchers named, Candidatus Aquarickettsia rohweri. The bacterium can be found in a number of corals that we commonly keep in our aquariums including, Acropora, Goniopora, Montipora, Seriatopora and Stylophora species. Additionally, it can also be found in anemones. Researches also discovered the bacterium can be transmitted through coral eating parasitic snails and transported through seawater whereby it can potentially infect corals when tissue damage is present. http://bit.ly/RNNnewsPeter90 Main Topic: ORA, ORA, ORA.... These are the teeth that are responsible for all the beautiful white sandy beaches out there. Parrotfish eat coral and grind up the skeleton and excrete sand. How is this possible? A team of scientists subjected parrotfish beaks to a Berkeley X-ray machine known as the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS can image organic crystals at a microscopic level. And the analysis revealed a unique woven structure in the crystals in a parrotfish's mouth that could open new frontiers for materials science, the researchers said. - http://bit.ly/2RGa3xT Peter: More evidence of sunscreen causing damage to coral. - http://bit.ly/2HrsBxl Listener Calls: Greg from Arizona with a question about water changes and his new sump. Scientists believe this 18-foot Greenland Shark to be 512 years old and the oldest living vertebrate in the world. With the help of a mathematical model analyzing the lens and the cornea that linked size with age, researchers found a way to predict age. The method to discover the age of the animal was determined last year. - http://bit.ly/2Fwo5LW Peter: 7 Habits of a Responsible Reefer. - http://bit.ly/2FtWqLW Tip of the Week: It's getting to be one of those times of year where storms are a raging and power outages can happen. Have a contingency plan! A generator or battery backup can be a real lifesaver. Blankets or some type of insulation to wrap around your tank can help to keep temp up a bit. Temperature and gas exchange are the most important things to keep stable during an outage, your tank can survive without lighting for 3-4 days without too much stress. On that note make sure to lower your lighting intensity for a day or two after a prolonged dark period, allowing your inhabitants to re-acclimate.
