Addleshaw Goddard welcomes its first group of 'Legal Explorers' as Dublin school students participate in the international law firm's social mobility programme in Ireland. The Addleshaw Goddard Legal Explorer Programme provides school students who have an interest in law the opportunity to experience the legal industry first-hand. The year-long work experience programme designed for fifth-year students runs from October to August in line with the academic year and aims to empower each student, informing them of the different opportunities available to them in post-secondary education. The first cohort of students participating in the programme are Vivienne Majchrzak and Glory Ahamefule from Mercy Secondary School, Inchicore, Dublin 8, and Aimee Geene from CBS Westland Row, Dublin 2. To qualify for the programme, applicants must be attending a state-funded, non-fee-paying school or DEIS school within travelling distance of Addleshaw Goddard's Dublin-based office. As part of the programme, each student is given a laptop to keep, a bursary, workshops and a dedicated mentor to provide support throughout the experience. Throughout the academic year, participants are introduced to different career pathways into the legal sector and meet some of the firm's staff, gaining valuable insight into the lived experiences of those currently working in the sector. Speaking on the programme, Sean Twomey, Partner and Head of Real Estate team in Ireland at Addleshaw Goddard, said: "At Addleshaw Goddard, unlocking young potential is one of our core beliefs. The Legal Explorer Programme embodies this and has been a huge success in our UK offices for many years. We are delighted to welcome our first cohort of students in Dublin this year and are extremely proud of our colleagues providing these students with such a unique experience, inspiring them to pursue a legal career." Supporting the programme and this year's cohorts, Deputy James Geoghegan T.D. for Dublin Bay South and a qualified Barrister, said: "It is brilliant to see an international law firm like Addleshaw Goddard opening the door to the legal world and bringing new learning opportunities to students from all communities. The Legal Explorer Programme offers students a taste of what the Irish legal industry entails, an invaluable insight for all aspiring lawyers. I was delighted to meet the students and provide them with an overview of my career as a barrister and how I've brought my legal skills into politics. I was very impressed with the students' enthusiasm to learn and wish them the very best for the future, which looks very bright for them all." Acting as mentors to the Explorers are Alison Devine, Associate, Disputes, Dr James Meighan, Managing Associate, Regulatory & Disputes, and Siobhan Kenny, Legal Director, Construction & Engineering. Dr James Meighan said, "It is always refreshing to meet and work with driven individuals who, at such a young age, are already testing out what their future might look like. It is an absolute pleasure to work with this year's group of Legal Explorers, and I look forward to seeing how each of their futures pans out - I have no doubt we will cross paths again over the coming years." A new report shows how the growing OurKidsCode network of creative coding workshops and clubs for families is enabling parents in communities across Ireland to be more proactive in their children's use of technology, with mothers comprising 72% of the parents involved. The OurKidsCode project, based in the School of Computer Science and Statistics in Trinity College Dublin, has built an infrastructure and partnership network with county councils across Ireland, including for leveraging Ireland's rural grid of broadband connection point community centres, and Microsoft Dream Space, as well as with the National Parents Council. This network of relationships is successfully enabling OurKidsCode to deliver facilitator-led workshops and a 'Start a Club' programme that supports the establishment of parent-led creative coding clubs for families with primary-level children. The OurKidsCode programme builds parents' confidence and skills in technology alongside their children at informal, hands-on creative coding workshops. These take place outside of school hours in libraries, primary schools and rural broadband connection point community centres. Creative coding is the playful use of computer programming to make art, stories, or interactive projects, combining coding, crafting and making. OurKidsCode workshops are appealing to parents who are looking for ways to increase their children's active creation rather than passive consumption of technology. OurKidsCode has collaborated with Microsoft Dream Space since 2022 to support young people, families and educators in rural communities through inclusive STEM opportunities. Core to this collaboration are the opportunities given to rural clubs to come together to enter The Dream Space Showcase, a national STEM event that celebrates innovation and creativity found within rural clubs, schools and communities. OurKidsCode has established fiscal and operational partnerships with county councils across Ireland and has worked closely with an increasing number of county council broadband officers since 2021. In 2024, OurKidsCode began to expand its work with county councils to include partnerships with county libraries. Facilitated by county councils and through its broadband officers, OurKidsCode offers workshops and provides support to clubs at broadband connection points across the country, which are publicly accessible sites in rural and remote areas that have been provided with a high-speed broadband connection. Funded by Research Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development, OurKidsCode has reached 5,240 parents and children in 111 predominantly rural locations across Ireland. The report shows females (mothers and girls) comprised 55 per cent of participants, with males (fathers and boys) making up 43 per cent, busting the gender stereotype that females are not as interested in computing as males. OurKidsCode is committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths). By partnering with DEIS schools, local development agencies and NGOs, it strives to make workshops that are accessible to all families. Speaking at the recent launch of OurKidsCode's Impact Report, OurKidsCode project lead and assistant professor in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at TCD, Dr. Nina Bresnihan, said: "OurKidsCode is committed to increasing opportunities for parental involvement in children's computing education and contributing to greater diversity, inclusivity and equal access, with a particular focus on rural communities where access to such initiatives is often limited. Getting parents involved in their children's coding education can have powerful outcomes. Research in our new report shows how this boosts knowledge and confidence. It also sustains families engaging together in computing activities and promotes computing as a subject choice and future careers in STEAM-related fields. Furthermore, it challenges stereotypes b...

The Dáil has heard that a Clare town isn't getting the educational supports it needs due to an assessment mechanism that isn't fit for purpose. Meelick Fianna Fáíl TD Cathal Crowe is calling for a change in the way schools are given DEIS status, claiming the process doesn't currently take vital aspects of educational disadvantage into account. DEIS schools are schools that receive extra resources to assist students considered to be at risk of educational disadvantage and at present, a total of 18 primary and post-primary schools in Clare have this status. Deputy Crowe says Shannon is one area which it could be argued deserves a helping hand.

A recent survey highlights strong parental support for STEM education, with 80% of parents willing to back their child's participation in extracurricular STEM activities. In addition, over half (54%) of the surveyed parents actively encourage their children to pursue an interest in STEM subjects. These figures are part of a survey conducted by Red C Research and released by ESB to mark the start of ESB Science Blast 2025. The first showcase events are taking place in RDS Dublin from Monday 3rd to Thursday 6th March 2025. ESB Science Blast, an RDS led initiative, is a free educational programme which actively encourages child-led investigation and scientific discovery. This non-competitive initiative aims to address inequities in STEM education by ensuring equal access for all students, with a 50/50 gender participation and a core focus on DEIS schools and Gaelscoileanna participation. Parents attitudes to STEM In the survey, almost half (48%) of parents with primary school-aged children stated they are satisfied with the STEM learning opportunities in the classroom. A regional disparity does exist as 40% of parents based in Dublin feel their child's school offers adequate STEM support compared to 33% of parents outside of Dublin. Overall, STEM ranks third in importance among school subjects, underscoring the need for greater awareness and advocacy in this area. STEM Career Opportunities and Understanding of STEM The survey also sheds light on perceptions of STEM career opportunities. Three-quarters (74%) of adults believe that a career in STEM would offer good job prospects. Yet only 35% are familiar with the career opportunities associated with STEM. There is a gender divide in perceptions of equal career opportunities in STEM, with 53% of men and 44% of women agreeing that such opportunities exist regardless of gender. The survey also reveals a gap in understanding regarding the term 'STEM', with 58% of participants admitting they do not have a clear grasp of the term. Commitment to STEM Reaffirming their commitment to fostering STEM education, ESB and the RDS today announce a five-year extension to their partnership of ESB Science Blast. Since 2019, ESB Science Blast has engaged over 70,000 pupils from all 32 counties, inspiring primary school pupils to explore the world around them and develop skills for the future, such as communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and curiosity. Commenting on the survey results and sponsorship renewal, Marguerite Sayers, Deputy Chief Executive, ESB said: "ESB Science Blast has been a transformative experience for thousands of students across Ireland. Supporting ESB Science Blast is one way we help nurture a diverse talent pool and encourage children to see the endless possibilities a career in STEM can offer. We are proud to extend our partnership with the RDS and continue our mission to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders, "The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the students is truly inspiring. Every year, the vast array of projects highlights the curiosity of primary school children as they investigate the science behind simple but intriguing questions. We look forward to welcoming students and their teachers to ESB Science Blast 2025". The positive and significant impact of ESB Science Blast is evident in the positive feedback from both pupils and teachers in an external evaluation study conducted by RDS. An impressive 71% of pupils reported improved teamwork skills, while 86% of teachers noted enhanced presentation skills in the classroom. The programme has also sparked a greater interest in STEM careers, with 65% of pupils expressing a desire to pursue a future in the field. Commenting on the partnership, Niamh De Loughry, Deputy Chief Executive Foundation said: "ESB Science Blast exemplifies our unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and addressing critical societal needs. As a cornerstone of our Science and Technology programme, this initiati...

The DEIS would, among other things, give them wide latitude to drastically increase industrial scale logging, including in Mature and Old Growth forests. In part one of this series, we explored one most important, and also complex, aspects of the proposed changes - meaningful Tribal inclusion.  I highly recommend you listen to that episode if you haven't yet. The Northwest Forest Plan is one of the primary reasons that we have any forest left in the Northwest.  Without it, and other protections that are now also at risk because of the Trump administration, our public lands would look no different than the industrial clearcuts and monocrop tree plantations that surround me in the Coast Range. In December, the Forest Service released its planned amendment to the Northwest Forest Plan in what is called a ‘Draft Environmental Impact Statement', or DEIS, and we the public have until March 17th to submit comments on their proposal. We are going to release several episodes focusing on the good, the bad, and complexities of the Forest Service's proposed changes, and we'll provide as much guidance as possible for how to submit comments and get involved in other ways. You can find guides to submit comments in the notes of the podcast version of this episode, and we will also be sharing links to comment writing guides on our website and social media very soon! For now, I'm so excited to start this mini-series off with Ryan Reed.  Ryan is from the Karuk, Hupa and Yurok tribes in Northern California, an Indigenous Fire Practitioner, wildland firefighter, co-founder of the Fire Generation Collaborative, and a member of the Northwest Forest Plan Federal Advisory Committee, among many other things!  Ryan is a thoughtful, dynamic speaker, and I've wanted to have him on Coast Range Radio for a long time.Real quick before we get started, I love to get feedback, questions, show ideas or whatever else is on your mind.  My email is michael@coastrange.org.  If you appreciate what we do, please share this show with people in your community!Show Notes:https://www.firegencollab.org/https://fusee.org/Braiding Indigenous and Western Knowledge for Climate-Adapted Forests: https://depts.washington.edu/flame/mature_forests/pdfs/BraidingSweetgrassReport.pdfComment Writing Guides!Northwest Forest Plan DEIS Engagement toolkit: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MOAORP7b1YenBZsZj27qfBJiJU4b6oXAX6vXKtqdQ-w/edit?usp=sharingRecommendations for Tribal Sovereignty and Environmental Justice in the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment Draft Environmental Impact Statement: https://blogs.uoregon.edu/nwfpjustfutures/resource-guide-for-making-public-comment/Support the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!

Our last episode was a great discussion with a Forest Service scientist and a forest ecologist with the Nature Conservancy about the effects of various fire treatments on subsequent fire behavior.  While I appreciated their perspective and research, I wanted to bring in a different viewpoint on fire and forest ecology. It's important to remember that western forests have existed and thrived long before humans arrived in North America.  The impulse to “manage” the world around us is an ingrained human trait, and not even particularly unique to humans. However, while indigenous people throughout the Americas sustainably and vibrantly stewarded their lands for millennia, Western notions of forest management and stewardship have proven disastrous everywhere they have been forced upon landscapes and communities. So we as a society should be very cautious and humble about the idea that we can improve on nature, especially as we enter a deepening phase of the climate crisis.I promise that coast range radio is not becoming a wildfire policy podcast, but wildfire policy is the number one factor (after profits for the 1% of course) driving massive landscape management decisions across all ownership types. And it's especially relevant as the Forest service seems to be going all-in on aggressive ramped up logging in the name of wildfire management in its recently released draft environmental impact statement on its plan to amend the landmark Northwest Forest Plan.(In case you don't know, an environmental impact statement, or EIS, is a document produced by an agency as part of a mandatory process assessing environmental impacts for a given project or policy, and a draft EIS is the public's opportunity to weigh in on the agency's assessment.). Some call it genuine public engagement, and some call it a farce with a predetermined outcome.  We'll have a lot more to say about how you can engage meaningfully in the process and fight back regardless, as we'll begin a whole series on the northwest forest plan DEIS in January. So with all that in mind, I'm sharing a great talk that the Sierra Club's Stop Clearcutting California Team put on with conservationist George Wuerthner, as part of their Forest Protection Forum series.George Wuerthner is a well-known ecologist and author who has dedicated his career to studying and advocating for wilderness and wildlife conservation. He is the author of nearly 40 books on environmental issues and natural history, including co-authoring and editing “Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy” His talk was too good to edit into one episode, so I'm breaking it in two.  This is part one, and I will put out a full version in the podcast feed of coast range radio.I love to hear your thoughts on the show, email me at michael@coastrange.org anytime!Research Links/Show Notes:George's Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbWfIM5JA58Stop Clearcutting CA: https://www.sierraclub.org/grassroots-network/stop-clearcutting-ca/resources#fpfGeorge's book, Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest PolicySupport the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!

Breaking Barriers in STEM: Over 5,000 Students Benefit from Inclusion Initiative

Today, Maynooth University, in partnership with Microsoft Ireland, Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland and the Department of Education, has published the STEM Passport for Inclusion Impact Report, which reveals that over 5,000 students from disadvantaged backgrounds have participated in the initiative to date. Notably, 76% of these students are now considering a career in STEM. The All-Ireland STEM Passport for Inclusion programme is a joint initiative by Maynooth University, Microsoft Ireland, Research Ireland and the Department of Education that addresses inequalities with access to STEM careers among post-primary school students in socially disadvantaged communities. Initially developed as a pilot in 2021, the programme was expanded nationwide in December 2023. The programme's innovative approach, which combines a recognised qualification (Level 6 NFQ), education support, and mentoring from industry role models, provides a unique pathway for female students to progress to third-level education and achieve a STEM qualification. Since its launch, over 5,370 female students from DEIS schools in all four provinces have been engaged, with 50% of participants from rural areas. As part of the programme, 1,100 industry mentors have delivered 2,524 mentoring hours. The outcome has been that students from 117 DEIS schools have been empowered to graduate with a university accredited STEM qualification while still in post-primary school. A survey of programme participants revealed that STEM Passport for Inclusion has positively changed students' view of STEM with 79% now considering applying to study STEM at third level while 76% are considering a career in STEM. The programme has also increased students' knowledge of, and familiarity with, STEM. Only 45% of students reported knowing what STEM was before participating in the programme. This increased to 95% once students completed the programme. This has helped to reduce the STEM confidence gap between girls in DEIS and non-DEIS schools. Previously, only 3 in 10 girls from DEIS schools were confident they could study STEM in the future while close to 6 in 10 girls from non-DEIS were confident. Once girls took part in STEM Passport for Inclusion, the STEM confidence gap between girls in DEIS and non-DEIS schools was all but eliminated. While the report details the significant impact of the programme to date, it also includes several informed recommendations to further STEM engagement and the impact of the programme across Ireland. STEM Impact Recommendations Expand the Programme Across All DEIS Schools: Secure funding to implement the programme in every DEIS school in Ireland - ensure nationwide access to STEM education for disadvantaged students. Provide Necessary Resources to DEIS Schools: Many schools lacked the resources to fully participate in the programme. Supplying these institutions with loaned technology, mobile lab kits, and internet support would help bridge this resource gap. Introduce Funded STEM Work Experience Programmes: Partner with industry to provide work experiences to enhance real-world learning and skill development. This initiative would be particularly valuable for DEIS students, who often lack exposure to STEM career pathways. Fund Longitudinal Research on Programme Impact: Invest in further comprehensive research so stakeholders can gain insights into long-term outcomes, enabling data-driven improvements and enhancing the programme's sustainability. The National Skills Strategy identified a need to increase STEM participation to develop the talent and skills that are needed for the future of work. Despite female students accounting for more than half of third-level students, they only make up 35% of STEM students. Moreover, fewer than one in ten graduates in STEM fields are from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. STEM Passport for Inclusion seeks to address this by ensuring that every student, regardless of background, leaves school STEM-prepared. ...

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an t-aonú lá is fiche de mhí Mheán Fómhair. Is mise Sibéal Dempsey. Tharla an dara hiarracht ar Donald Trump a fheallmharú tráthnóna Dé Domhnaigh ar a chúrsa gailf in West Palm Beach. Bhí an t-amhrastach ag fanacht i dtoir an chúrsa gailf sula bhfaca Gníomhairí na Seirbhíse Rúnda é. Tá an t-amhrastach cúisithe as coireanna gunna cónaidhme agus d'fhéadfadh go mbeadh cúiseamh breise i gceist. Tá sé ina thacadóir glórach don Úcráin, tar éis dó a bheith faoi agallamh ag an BBC roimhe seo ar an ábhar agus ag rá go poiblí go raibh sé ag iarraidh saighdiúirí Afganastánacha a earcú chun bogadh go dtí an Úcráin. Tá leabhar ar an ábhar foilsithe aige ar Amazon freisin. Labhair Trump go poiblí an lá tar éis na hiarrachta feallmharaithe, ag moladh na Seirbhíse Rúnda as sár-jab a dhéanamh agus ag cur an mhilleáin faoin dá iarracht feallmharaithe ar “reitric” ó na Daonlathaigh a thug “baol don daonlathas”, dar le Trump. Bhí dhá bhabhta pléascanna sa Liobáin an tseachtain seo a bhain úsáid as gléasanna leictreonacha. Phléasc na mílte glaoirí agus siúlscéalaithe de chuid Hezbollah, maraíodh tríocha dó duine agus gortaíodh na mílte. Ní dhearna Iosrael trácht go sonrach ar na hionsaithe ach thug sé faoi deara níos luaithe an tseachtain seo go raibh sé ag dul isteach i “gcéim nua sa chogadh”, mar a bhog a chuid trúpaí ó thuaidh go dtí an teorainn idir Iosrael agus an Liobáin. Níl sé soiléir cé chomh díreach agus a phléasc na gléasanna, le roinnt ag éileamh go raibh insíothlú déanta ag Iosrael ar an gcóras déantúsaíochta chun pléascáin a phlandáil laistigh de na gléasanna sular shroich siad Hezbollah. Gheall Hezbollah, as a chuid féin, freagra a thabhairt. Cháin grúpa príomhoidí atá ag obair i mBaile Átha Cliath tuarascáil ón OECD a choimisiúnaigh an Roinn Oideachais chun feidhmíocht na hÉireann maidir le dul i ngleic le míbhuntáiste i scoileanna a mheas. Fuarthas amach sa tuarascáil go bhfuil difríochtaí fós i dtorthaí idir scoileanna DEIS agus scoileanna eile agus daltaí ó chúlraí faoi mhíbhuntáiste. Rud amháin a cháin na príomhoidí, áfach, ná go raibh an tuarascáil ag brath go príomha ar fhéintuairisciú na Roinne Oideachais, go raibh na moltaí gan samhlaíocht agus doiléir, agus nár tugadh cuairt ach ar shé scoil le linn tréimhse seachtaine sa bhliain fiche trí.
