This week, the boys head to the jungle for one of Amazon Studios' first films, James Gray's “The Lost City of Z”. That's pronounced “Zed” for you British purists. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle. We get drinking with a few mini-reviews at the top, and Jeff must have started early because he recorded with his microphone facing the wrong way. As the daily TV news leads warn us, violence is an ongoing part of our contemporary life, which makes the various examples of it perfect fodder for the movies. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Mary Pat Treuthart, and Nathan Weinbender discuss two movies that incorporate violence, or references to it, at their very core. The first is the aptly titled “The Smashing Machine,” in which Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The other is “Anemone,” a film starring Daniel Day-Lewis as a man tortured by memories of war.

On episode 310 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and Executive Editor Ryan McQuade to chat about the 63rd edition of the New York Film Festival and two below-the-line Oscar categories. First, the gang shares their overall experience at the festival before diving into quick reviews on the World Premieres of Anemone, Mr. Scorsese, and Is This Thing On? Then, they discuss the hype surrounding the electric Secret Screening of Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme. The film, starring Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Odessa A'zion, had a tremendous response at the festival, but what does that mean for Oscar season and the movie's upcoming Christmas release? Finally, Sophia, Erik, and Ryan take a look at two major technical categories, Film Editing and Cinematography. They discuss the upcoming Cinematography shortlist, the potential for history to be made, and the possible crossover between these two categories and Best Picture. Films mentioned include One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners, Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, F1: The Movie, Marty Supreme, and more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube, and more. This podcast runs 1h8m. Porter, a former congresswoman and accolade of Elizabeth Warren, lost her 2024 race for U.S. Senate. Now a new video has surfaced of her screaming and cursing at a staffer! Plus, who was a worse Batman—Porter (who dressed up as the Gotham superhero for Halloween) or Ben Affleck? "Anemone" is a psychological drama film directed by Ronan Day-Lewis in his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay he co-wrote with his father, three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who also stars in the lead role. It features the latter's return to acting for the first time since "Phantom Thread" in 2017, alongside Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival and received positive reviews for the performances, dark atmosphere, striking cinematography, and haunting music by Bobby Krlic. Day-Lewis (the son, not the father) was kind enough to spend time speaking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on October 3rd by Focus Features, and then expand a week later on October 10th. Thank you, and enjoy!
