Monkey laundering? It's what happens when U.S. labs will pay premiums for monkeys even if they're on the endangered species list. PETA's effort to stop the practice got a boost when the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cracked down on an alleged monkey smuggling ring based in Cambodia this month that was responsible for bringing in thousands of monkeys to labs in the U.S. An arrest in New York resulted in the unsealing of an indictment listing 8 Asian nationals, including top Cambodian government officials, and principals of a major primate supplier. If convicted the indicted could face up to 20 years in prison and be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars. PETA began exposing the dark side of monkey importation and laundering in the summer. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA primate expert, talked to podcast host Emil Guillermo in July about how the long-tailed macaque has become endangered by being the prime focus of the monkey smugglers. Jones-Engel describes how they are cruelly treated and how their lives are being wasted in labs in the U.S. See how you can stop the illegal importation of endangered monkeys. By fighting the Navy on its use of sheep in decompression illness testing, a young animal rights activist has found her calling. Emil Guillermo talks to Shriya Swaminathan, PETA Science Policy Advisor for International Lab Methods about the Navy's cruel decompression sickness testing on sheep. For Swaminathan, leaving her science doctoral program to work for PETA full-time has been the way to put her animal rights beliefs to work. After a six-year fight, PETA already forced the shutdown of a cruel dog lab at Texas A&M, but the school wouldn't release the remaining dogs. All that changed last week (Nov. 4) when PETA got assurances from Texas A&M that nine Golden Retrievers--the last remnants of that cruel canine muscular dystrophy lab--will be freed by the end of the year. Dr.Alka Chandna, PETA VP for Laboratory Investigations talks with Emil Guillermo about how the case was won, and what the victory means in the fight to end animal experimentation. The hoopleheads return to the camp for what is likely a final reconnoiter as they revisit the premiere of the series what done brought em to this here place to begin it: Deadwood (2004). It's a thrill being back in The Black Hills with our dear friends, many of whom are looking younger and less deceased than last we met: Tim Driscoll, Ned Mason, the family of the fivehead, that horse thief who gave us our signature sign-off... For a far more exhaustive discussion of this brilliant hour of television, go back and listen to our original podcast, recorded 987 days prior when Matt, Mel, and Carol didn't know a sluice from a rocker box. But first, in a surprise installment of Readers Theatre, Russell briefs us on camp business, including an alarm of fire and the suicide of Prospect Marquette by arsenic. (18:58-1:27:53) ... Then, we travel even further back in time to Rome (2005). Someone has purloined Julius Caesar's battle standard in Gaul, and reluctant bros Vorenus and Pullo of the 13th Legion are tasked with its recovery. Along their mission they encounter snot-nosed Kid Exposition, who helpfully explains Roman politics to Host Matt, whose attention wandered during the scene in which the white guys in robes were talking. (So, all the scenes.) This episode of the podcast is sponsored by 23andme. Send them your spit in a tube, and unlock the secrets of your DNA. You might be a secret Ubian! (1:27:54-2:35:22) ... Released Nov 2012 This mix is a collection of newly released Tech House songs that I have discovered this past month and arranged in what I feel is a super smooth deep house experience. I hope you enjoy it. This is probably a set that I would play if I were still spinning at an after hours club. No top 40 hits here, just straight Tech House baby. The intro is an uplifting speech by Charlie Chaplin from the 1940's classic "The Great Dictator". It seemed appropriate to me, fitting my theme for the end of days. "More than cleverness we need kindness..." Music Is Love.
