Here's what passes for science at a major U.S. university. Experiments on menopause involving animals who don't naturally experience menopause, and all intended to find treatments for menopause in humans. You don't need to be a scientist to think that doesn't make sense. And neither does the $4 million the National Institutes of Health gave a researcher at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst to do the research. PETA has filed a suit to get video and documents to expose and put a stop to the experiments. In the meantime, the wasteful experiments continue. Why do they happen? This is the way grant-funded science works in America. PETA is trying to change that with among other things the Research Modernization Deal. Emil talks about the UMASS case to Katherine Roe, Chief of PETA's Science Advancement and Outreach group. Go to PETA.org to learn more. Jim Mason, a co-author with philosopher Peter Singer on "Animal Factories," has come out with a new edition of his 1993 classic, "An Unnatural Order--Roots of Our Destruction of Nature." The book is a history of the evolution of mankind's treatment of animals and how the agrarian culture changed our relationship with animals. Instead of being among the animals, we were in control and had dominion over animals. Mason connects that thinking with racism, colonialism, and white supremacy in this conversation with Emil Guillermo. Go to PETA.org for more. Dan Paden, PETA VP of Evidence Analysis talks to Emil Guillermo about how the case evolved from the state to the federal level, ultimately freeing the dogs and shutting down Envigo. The fate of 3,000 beagles bred for experimentation is in doubt as this podcast reaches the public. Envigo, a multi-million dollar supplier of dogs for lab experimentation worldwide, is accused of violations under the Animal Welfare Act after a PETA undercover investigation exposed horrible conditions at Envigo's Virginia facility. The Department of Justice has sought to close down the facility. But Envigo wants to sell off its remaining 3,000 dogs to labs for experimentation first. Daphna Nachminovich, PETA Sr. VP for Animal Cruelty explains why that's unacceptable. She wants animal lovers to join PETA in forcing Envigo to give up all the dogs to safe and caring homes. The Research Modernization Deal, RMD, is a new deal for scientists and animals developed by the scientists at PETA. Intended to change the paradigm on the use of animals in experimentation, RMD is a common-sense strategy necessitated by the 90 percent failure rate of research involving animals to produce anything of value for humans. PETA's Dr.Emily Trunnell with the Laboratory Investigations Department is working with the team trying to make RMD a reality. She tells Emil Guillermo the program is as simple as stopping everything that doesn't work or produce real results and shifting money and emphasis to non-animal experiments that would have a better chance at success. When laboratories transport monkeys into the U.S. and throughout the country, every movement must be documented by a veterinary inspection. PETA found it's not being done in dozens of cases involving nearly 2,000 monkeys. These illegal shipments represent a public health risk as monkeys can pass such diseases as tuberculosis, West Nile virus, and Herpes B to humans. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA scientist, talks to Emil Guillermo about how PETA is asking the USDA to suspend and fine research facilities for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act.  Dr. Jones-Engel talks about how awareness was raised after a van carrying monkeys crashed in Danville, Pennsylvania in January this year. And she says how this wouldn't be an issue if researchers simply stopped wasteful, useless and cruel experimentation on animals. Go to PETA.org for more on the illegal shipments of monkeys. The PETA Podcast PETA, the world's largest animal rights organization, is 6.5 million strong and growing. This is the place to find out why. Hear from insiders, thought leaders, activists, investigators, politicians, and others why animals need more than kindness—they have the right not to be abused or exploited in any way.
