The bestselling author delves into the twisted crimes of Wayne Adam Ford.“This kind of frightening and fascinating glimpse into a killer's mind is rare.” —Ron Franscell, New York Times–bestselling author On a chilly November afternoon in 1998, a tearful 36-year-old man walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department in Eureka, California, and confessed to something horrible. “I hurt some people,” he said. Inside his pocket was the ghastly proof of his statement. But there was more to Wayne Adam Ford than the trail of mangled victims he left behind. More, even, than the twisted predator inside, which drove him to increasingly perverse sexual appetites. Pulitzer Prize–nominated author Caitlin Rother draws on previously sealed testimony, interviews with the key players in the case, and the killer's shocking confession to explore the demons that drove a damaged man to his unspeakable crimes. Her book is a harrowing psychological portrait and a haunting, unforgettable true-life thriller. Includes dramatic photos “Page-turning excitement and blood-curdling terror . . . You don't need to review them.Life insurance is an investment (nope, it's insurance with an investment component)You can be your own banker.Indexed Universal Life policies are a ‘scam'.Fee based products (no-load policies) are always better options than commission based products.Luke Rother, CLU, CEPA is a life insurance specialist that has a passion for collaborating with trusted advisors to develop and implement risk protection related strategies to enhance the value that advisors bring their clients.  He entered financial services after working in the nonprofit sector following in the footsteps of his father, Randy, who has been a life insurance specialist for over 40 years. Ghost Forests: A Silent Warning from North Carolina's Coast

Send us a textRising seas. Dredged rivers. Dying forests. In this episode of Shoresides, we investigate one of North Carolina's most subtle yet devastating climate threats: ghost forests. These vast expanses of standing dead trees are creeping inland, driven by rising sea levels and relentless dredging of the Cape Fear River.UNCW scientists Monica Rother and Andrea Hawks join us to explain how their research—combining tree ring data and microscopic marine organisms—paints a stark picture of environmental change. They discuss why ghost forests are spreading, how they disrupt ecosystems, and what it means for communities, flooding, and environmental justice across the region.Rother and Hawks are at the forefront of research on North Carolina's ghost forests, using innovative methods to track the impact of climate change and human activity on coastal ecosystems. Rother, a forest ecologist and tree ring scientist, analyzes tree growth patterns to understand long-term environmental changes, revealing how rising salinity levels stress and ultimately kill freshwater trees. Hawks, a micropaleontologist, studies tiny marine organisms preserved in sediment to reconstruct past sea level changes and pinpoint when saltwater intrusion began affecting these landscapes. Together, their interdisciplinary work provides a clearer picture of how dredging and rising seas accelerate the spread of ghost forests, offering crucial insights into the future of coastal resilience and community health.Learn more...1. Ghost forests are dead tree stands caused by rising salinity. These eerie landscapes form when saltwater intrusion—driven by rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and human activities like dredging—kills freshwater-dependent trees, leaving behind lifeless trunks.2. They are a visible sign of climate change. Ghost forests are one of the most striking indicators of global warming, as they mark areas where land is transitioning from forest to marsh due to sea-level rise and increasing storm surges.3. The Cape Fear River dredging accelerates ghost forest formation. In Wilmington, NC, repeated deepening of the Cape Fear River has allowed tides to push saltwater farther inland, increasing salinity in freshwater wetlands and rapidly killing off bald cypress and other trees.4. They disrupt ecosystems and increase flooding risks. The loss of forested wetlands means less natural flood protection, leading to higher flood risks for nearby communities. 5. Ghost forests are expanding along the East and Gulf Coasts. While they are particularly noticeable in North Carolina, ghost forests are appearing from the Mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Coast.Useful articles...1. Bernhardt, E. “[This] is one of the great crime mysteries of modern times. It took an author of Caitlin Rother's caliber to bring it into sharp focus. A riveting read.”—Gregg Olsen, #1 New York Times bestselling author“I got a girl, hung herself in the guest house.”The call came on the morning of July 13, 2011, from the historic Spreckels Mansion, a lavish beachfront property in Coronado, California, owned by pharmaceutical tycoon and multimillionaire Jonah Shacknai. When authorities arrived, they found the naked body of Jonah's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, gagged, her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her. Jonah's brother, Adam, claimed to have found Rebecca hanging by a rope from the second-floor balcony. On a bedroom door in black paint were the cryptic words:SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER.Was this scrawled message a suicide note or a killer's taunt? Rebecca's death came two days after Jonah's six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca's care. Authorities deemed Rebecca's death a suicide resulting from her guilt. But who would stage either a suicide ora murder in such a bizarre, elaborate way?Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother weaves stunning new details into a personal yet objective examination of the sensational case. She explores its many layers—including the civil suit in which a jury found Adam Shacknai responsible for Rebecca's death, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department bombshell decision to reconfirm its original findings. As compelling as it is troubling, this controversial real-life mystery is a classic American tragedy that evokes the same haunting fascination as the JonBenet Ramsey and O.J. Simpson cases.“Rother's meticulous journalism shines through in this authoritative account of the Rebecca Zahau death incident. If you think you know this case, think again. And read this book.”—Katherine Ramsland, professor of forensic psychology and author of The Psychology of Death InvestigationsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

One might suppose this became a run-of-the mill murder case. Au contraire, mon frere! Returning Murder Most Foul guest author, Caitlin Rother, found that writing her book, THEN NO ONE CAN HAVE HER about the investigation and trial was truly a challenge. In the forward to her book Ms. Rother writes: the ethical allegations flying in every direction, the voice in the vent, the insurance money transfers, the judge with the brain tumor and the judge from the “sweat lodge” case, the Docugate scandal and the bombshell e-mail that got thrown out on this roller coaster ride to justice, suffice it to say I came to empathize with the attorneys in this case because there was so much information it became a challenge to decide what to include and what to leave out.   Join me today as we try to untangle this mess with our guide author Caitlin Rother.

Full Text of ReadingsSeventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 110The Saint of the day is Blessed Stanley RotherBlessed Stanley Rother’s Story On May 25, 1963, Stanley Francis Rother, a farmer’s son from Okarche, Oklahoma, was ordained for his home diocese of Oklahoma City-Tulsa. Having flunked out of the area seminary due to his difficulty with Latin, Fr. Rother finally accepted an invitation to attend Mount St. Mary Seminary in Maryland, where he finished his studies and was approved for ordination. After serving in his local diocese for five years, Fr. Rother joined five priests, three religious sisters, and three laypersons to staff a Guatemalan mission in Santiago Atitlán serving the Tz’utujil people. The Oklahoma City diocese heard the call of Pope John XXIII to send missionaries to foreign lands, especially Central America. These twelve individuals felt the call, and with their bishop's approval, left the comforts of the United States to live and work in Guatemala. By 1975, Fr. Rother was alone at his parish in Santiago Atitlán, the others having returned home for various reasons. He served the Tz’utujil people for 13 years and won their hearts and souls. Ever the farmer, and always unpretentious and mild mannered, Fr. Rother experimented with various crops as well as fulfilling his heavy pastoral duties which included as many as five Masses in four different locations on a given Sunday and as many as 1,000 baptisms a year. Guatemala's civil war reached the highlands and Lake Atitlán by 1980. Government troops camped on the parish farm and Fr. Rother witnessed the assassination of a number of his parishioners, including the parish deacon. Warned of imminent danger, Fr. Rother returned to the United States for three months early in 1981, to visit with his family and friends. Against the advice of his family and the local bishop, Fr. Rother returned to Atitlán to be with his people. He remembered a Sisters’ community who had fled the country and later tried to return but the people asked, “Where were you when we needed you?” On the evening of July 28, three masked men entered the rectory and shot Fr. Rother to death. His beloved parishioners mourned him repeatedly crying, “They have killed our priest.” Pope Francis declared Stanley Rother a martyr on December 2, 2016. He was beatified in Oklahoma City on September 23, 2017. Reflection The declaration of a blessed or saint is always a celebration of the Church as the people of God. To single out an individual for his or her holiness and service builds up the entire community of faith. But this is doubly true for the Church in the United States and in Oklahoma, as one of our own is both declared a martyr for the faith and enrolled in the ranks of those declared Blessed by the Church. May the dedication, faith, and service of Blessed Stanley Rother be a source of strength for all in this country. Learn more about Blessed Stanley Rother!
